How do you create custom Word Search Puzzles?
It’s easy! Just provide your word list and the Word Search Maker will create a puzzle for you.
- Enter your words into the text box provided. Make sure to add no more than 30 words.
- Select the theme or topics of your word search.
- Words should only include letters from a-z – uppercase or lowercase. You can use space and dash but these will be omitted while searching for your word search.
- Make sure not to use any personal information if you want your puzzles added to our database.
- When you are ready, click on “Regenerate” and the word search will be generated for you.
- If you want to download and print your word search puzzle, just click on “Download PDF.” The word search will be downloaded as a PDF file which you can then print.
NOTE: These are randomly generated words so be sure to proofread carefully before using. You can also regenerate the puzzle with new array of words.

- Our word search generator uses a basic word filter to prevent the accidental, random creation of offensive words. When you create your puzzle, please check it over it carefully to be sure unintended words were not added by our random letter generator.

Below are two examples of beginner and intermediate Word Searches! The Word Search Maker creates the puzzle page as well as a solution page.
Free phonics games and activities to print: Word Search Puzzles
! Make your standard word search with text or use images as the text hints.
This generator lets you make a unique type of word search for phonics exercises or spelling practice. You can select images that you want to use and type in any text you’d like to be entered into the puzzle. So, you can choose from 400+ images to create printable games to supplements your current phonics resources or to support students working with the phonics workbooks from this site. It’s super simple, easy to use, fast, but very powerful.
Choose the type of puzzles you’d like to make and the word search maker will open in a new tab
What makes this word search different from others?
— Thanks for asking! This template doesn’t just have students look at a word and try to find it. Instead, you can use images and students have to think about how the word is spelled. They can write it below the image and then try to find it in the puzzle to verify they were correct. It makes the word search a ‘work’ sheet and not a simple time-filler.
— With the text only version, you can have different text than the puzzle. So, you can enter a question as your hint and it will work just like a crossword puzzle. Students will have to read the question, think about the answer and find it. Again, by doing this, you are making this activity a ‘work’ sheet, not just a printable game.
— You can enter the word as scrambled text for students to unscramble and then find.
It may be a good idea to go over each of the images with the students one time if they are not familiar with the content from Fun Fonix.
There is a print menu if you are on a PC, but if you are using a mobile device the menu may not appear. You will need to print the word search just like you would print any page off the Internet.
