¿Se usa «to list» en este sentido en británico?

La verdad es que no sé :(.
‘It’s listed at XXX euros’ me suena bastante normal así que supongo que se usa el verbo ‘to list’ con frecuencia también.

This is one of the top searches that brings people to my blog for answers each day: “Is Love It or List It fake?”

Apparently there are a lot of people out there who 1) watch the popular show on HGTV but 2) aren’t buying that all the drama in the episodes is real.

Other common searches: “Are Hilary and David married in real life?” and “Why were David and Hilary replaced by new hosts?”

Today I’ve got the answers for you!

Let’s put it this way: these kinds of shows are entertainment. They are not documentaries.

And if you really believe that the same basic pattern plays out naturally in every episode (the homeowners don’t trust Hilary’s plan, they hate the first house David shows them, Hilary runs into a major construction/financial problem that requires eliminating one of the projects she promised the homeowners she’d do, and then David finds them their dream house),well, I have a bridge to sell you.

I’ve heard rumors that two endings are always filmed, with the homeowners saying both “We’re going to love it!” and “We’re going to list it!” Then the producers choose which one to air during the final edit.

So…if that’s true, then the outcome has nothing to do with what happened in real life. At least not all the time.

A reader named Jen wrote me about this, saying:

Many people that appear on the show have no intentions of actually moving, but signed up for the show so they could get their renovations done at a discount. I’m not sure what the actual discount is, perhaps lower labor costs, but it’s cheaper than if they had hired an independent contractor to do the work.

If she’s right, then it would make sense for the producers to choose how each episode ends. Otherwise most homeowners would end up loving their newly remodeled houses and staying put, and poor David would never get to “win.”

I heard from a reader who was on the show and he answered some of these questions here.

Another reader told me:

I live in the area and know a couple who were on the show. What we don’t see is that some of the houses the couple are looking at are not actually for sale.

As well, the “after” shots of the rooms are not actually finished sometimes. My friend’s room was only half finished as they ran into more problems during the renos, so they took the shot to look as though the rooms are complete. Actually, they even did not finish sewing some of the cushions for the couches and just wrapped the fabric and placed it just so to look as though it was.

I’ve heard similar stories from people who were on House Hunters and Designed to Sell.

I always assumed that the constantly complaining homeowners were being “encouraged” by producers to act up a bit. But the designer on the show Hilary Farr insisted in an interview that the tension is all real:

“The show is not at all scripted and the reactions of the homeowners to renovation realities and bad news is very real. We see a one-hour rendition of a three-week process. It’s a lot for the home owners to process and the anxiety is apparent.”

In the end I’m not sure how much it matters if the show’s drama is “faked” a bit for TV. We get to do a little house hunting with the couple (even if they’re not always serious about moving) and it’s fun seeing how the renovations turn out.

#2. Are Hilary and David married in real life?

Ummm…no. I’m not sure why so many people think they might be.

Maybe because they bicker like an old married couple on the show?

However, Hilary says of her relationship with her costar, whom she met after they were cast together for the show,

“There’s a genuine deep affection between us and a really good, genuine, healthy competition. What you see is what you get. We do bicker. We are exact opposites. We adore each other. We make each other laugh a lot.”

#3. Why were Hilary and David replaced by that young couple?

This month a new version of the show premiered in the States (it was already airing in Canada) called “Love It or List It Too.”

Designer Jillian Harris (remember her as The Bachelorette?) and real estate agent Todd Talbot are the hosts of this one, which takes place in Vancouver instead of Toronto.

This seems to have caused a lot of viewer confusion and angst. A lot of people think this means David and Hilary got the boot. Some have told me they’re boycotting the show until the original hosts return or are calling for petitions to get them back.

But HGTV’s general manager Kathleen Fince explains:

“One of our biggest hits is Love It or List It…so we’re adding a companion spin-off series and welcoming two new talents to the HGTV family with Love It or List It Too.”

In other words, the original is getting great ratings but there are only so many episodes of it they can air…so now they have a second team creating more original programming with the same concept.

Love It or List It is a home design TV show on HGTV, W Network, and OWN Canada. It is also the original show in the Love it or List It franchise.

The show has run for 18 seasons to date having premiered on September 8, 2008. The 18th season ran from October to December 2021.

In September 2014, the show began filming in North Carolina.[1]

Format[edit]

Every episode of Love It or List It follows the same format. A couple or family shows their current house to designer Hilary Farr and real estate agent David Visentin. Hilary redesigns parts of the home based on the desires of the homeowners and their budget and she oversees the renovations and construction. David finds real estate listings that meet the homeowners’ needs and budget to convince them to list their current house and buy a new one.[2]

Common challenges that Hilary faces include an inadequate budget to complete the entire request list from the homeowners, often due to discovery of unforeseen issues with the house that are uncovered during the renovation, such as lack of compliance with modern building codes.

Common issues for David, meanwhile, depend on the homeowners’ desires; for instance, the couple has children enrolled in the neighborhood school and they do not desire to change, or the potential house is too distant from family members or a workplace. Frequently, David will offer a house significantly outside his given budget, and the homeowners will consider it, or homeowners will outright increase his target; Hilary meets with much more resistance to requests for even small increases in the renovation budget.

After Hilary’s renovation is complete, the homeowners are given a tour of their current home to see what she was able to accomplish.

After the tour, David meets with them and hands them an evaluation of the home’s current market value following the renovations. He will then remind the couple what they could have in one of the new homes they looked at and that they would not get that in their current home.

The homeowners then meet with Hilary and David, who pose a question to them: The homeowners must choose either to «Love It,» meaning that they will continue to live in their current home with the renovations, or to «List It,» meaning that they will buy one of the homes David showed them and sell their current home.

At this stage, all else being equal Hilary is at a theoretical disadvantage: Although Hilary’s renovations increase the attractiveness of her «Love It» option by improving the current home’s livability, they simultaneously increase the attractiveness of David’s «List It» option by increasing the current home’s resale value and thereby decreasing the net cost of acquiring any given new home that he proposes.

By contrast, David’s efforts to maximize the attractiveness of his «List It» option do not provide Hilary any offsetting benefit increasing the attractiveness of her «Love It» option.

After a moment to deliberate, the homeowners reveal their decision and explain their reasoning to Hilary and David. If the homeowners decide to «List It,» Hilary generally reacts with equanimity and expresses a desire for their best interest, whereas if they decide to «Love It,» David frequently reacts with feigned incredulity, questioning their reasoning and/or giving at least the impression of taking their decision personally.

The parties then bid each other farewell, with closing footage of Hilary and David continuing to react and occasionally continuing their bout of one-upmanship.

  • Hilary Farr – Hilary Farr is a home designer from Toronto, Ontario. She has lived in Australia, England, California, and New York City. Farr honed her skills on properties in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, New York and Toronto. When she first moved back to Toronto, she became the first designer to «stage» properties for sale. She continues to build and design homes in the downtown core where she herself owns properties.[3]
  • David Visentin – David Visentin is a real estate agent in Southern Ontario with Country Living Realty Limited. He has been practicing since 1987.[4]

Assistant Designer

  • Desta Ostapyk (Canadian episodes) – Desta is a Toronto-based designer who graduated in 2004 from the Toronto International Academy of Design and Technology in Interior Design, and has since focused on a career in the Television Industry. She first started working with Big Coat Productions during her last semester of school as an intern for HGTV’s hit series My Parents House. She soon became the Design Stylist for the show.[5]

  • Eric Eremita (North Carolina episodes) – General contractor and designer Eric Eremita was selected to be the one and only general contractor on HGTV’s Love It or List It U.S. version, after the network took notice of him when he competed in its Brother vs. Brother reality show.
  • Eddie Richardson (Canadian episodes) – Eddie Richardson was a contractor on Love It or List It who started his own family business. Richardson has also been a pro-beach volleyball player and professional bass fisherman.

Love It or List It has spawned five spinoffs.

The first,[6] known as Love It or List It Vancouver (or Love it or List it Too in the US), was launched in winter 2012 and is hosted by Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot.

The second spin-off, a British version known as Kirstie and Phil’s Love It or List It, debuted in 2015,[7] is hosted by Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer.

The third spin off, Love It or List It Vacation Homes[8] debuted in spring 2016 and is hosted by Dan Vickery and Elisa Goldhawke.

A fourth spin off, Vendre ou renover au Quebec, debuted in January 2017 and is hosted by Maika Desnoyers and Daniel Corbin.[9]

The fifth spin off, Love It Or List It Australia, debuted in September 2017 and is hosted by Andrew Winter and Neale Whittaker.[10]

Reception[edit]

On August 31, 2010, Love It or List It was nominated for two Gemini Awards: Best Reality Program or Series and Best Direction in a Reality Program or Series. When HGTV premiered the show on the network, the company stated that Love It or List It has been the highest-rated reality series since Candice Olson’s Candice Tells All.[12]

In 2012, New York Times’ columnist Gail Collins noted that it was US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s favorite TV show.[13][14] According to Collins, Clinton finds the show «very calming»[15] after being interviewed about her departure from politics.[16][17][18]

In a 2013 interview with Las Vegas Magazine, Vanna White from Wheel of Fortune said it was one of her favorite HGTV programs.[19] Actress Julianne Moore also gave similar praise for the show in an interview with Katie Couric.[20]

According to The Wall Street Journal, the show and its Vancouver spinoff is one of Canada’s beloved reality series.[21]

The show has also been referenced in various television sitcoms and films including ABC’s The Middle, CBS’s Mom and Rebel Wilson’s 2019 film Isn’t It Romantic.

Controversy[edit]

In April 2016, homeowners Deanna Murphy and Tim Sullivan who had participated in a 2015 Love It or List It episode filed suit against production company Big Coat TV, as well as the North Carolina contractor (Aaron Fitz Construction)[22] who had been hired by the show to do the renovations on their home. The couple alleges that the renovation funds that they provided were not properly disbursed, and that the work on their home was done to a substandard quality.[23] Moreover, the lawsuit states that the television personalities on the show do not play an active role in the renovation process, and that they were not shown homes on the market by any licensed North Carolina real estate agent. Big Coat TV has commented that they «do intend to vigorously defend what [they] consider to be false allegations.»[24]

The suit was settled in April 2017.[25] The plaintiffs had signed a confidentiality agreement; their lawyer would not comment on the settlement.[26] Big Coat had previously filed a countersuit for libel, slander and product disparagement; parts of that suit had been dismissed by the time of the settlement but that was under appeal by Big Coat. After the agreements had been concluded, both suits were dismissed.[22]

Scandal and reality television go hand in hand, and each show seems to come up with its own unique set of issues. HGTV’s home design program, Love It or List It, has been accused of manipulating footage and redesigning endings. The show’s reputation hinges on buying, selling, and remodeling on a budget, but is it all smoke and mirrors?

Stick to the formula

Reality show producers develop formulas to keep you watching. There’s always a crazy alcoholic on the Bachelor/Bachelorette, a cheating villain in Survivor, and that one person you swear to God will never shed those extra pounds on The Biggest Loser. Love It or List It is no exception to the script.

The show’s premise is this: unhappy homeowners work with both a designer and a realtor. The realtor shows them three houses for sale while the designer redecorates their home. At the end of the show, the homeowners decide if they’d like to stay or go.

Now, let’s talk about how this script really unfolds. The realtor’s first two houses are typically way out of the client’s price range, nowhere near the desired neighborhood, or just plain wrong. The third choice is always the «perfect» house, magically discovered by the agent at the eleventh hour. As for the remodeling phase, contractors always stumble into some sort of major complication that pulls on the client’s pursestrings. The snag often stems from a ridiculous request from the homeowners, who then get mad at the show’s designer for not meeting their demands. When the dust settles, all the nonsense suddenly makes sense and everybody lives happily ever after, at least in TV land.

Cutting corners

According to real contractors (people who do this for a living; not for entertainment value), the crew on Love It or List It gives clients unrealistic expectations about the amount of time and money it will take to complete a job. Renovating an entire house in under two weeks with a $50,000 budget is not real life. Sorry, frugal homeowners, but the truth may look more like this:

In April 2016, a couple in Raleigh, N.C. filed a lawsuit against Big Coat TV, the Canadian-based production company that makes Love It or List It, claiming that shoddy renovations left their home in complete disrepair. According to the Miami Herald, homeowners Deena Murphy and Tim Sullivan said «the floor in the home was ‘irreparably damaged,'» and «duct work left holes in the floor ‘through which vermin could enter the house.'» The homeowners also alleged breaches of contract and illegal practices regarding the licensing of realtors and contractors, but they had us at vermin. Big Coat TV, you might want to check yourself before you wreck yourself another house.

Alternate endings

According to the popular home decor blog, Hooked on Houses, rumors have circulated that the ending of Love It or List It is contrived. Allegedly, producers film two endings—one where the homeowners love the renovations and one where they list their home—and choose the ending they like best for each segment. Ew! If the clients are essentially actors, are the houses just fancy sets? We’re sorry we asked. Read on.

False advertising

According to show participants, and the neighbors of show participants, some of the houses shown by realtors weren’t actually for sale, and some of the redesigned homes slated for the market were never listed. «There’s one just down the street from me.» said a reader of the Hooked on Houses blog. «This show chooses families who want a professional renovation done on their home. There is NOTHING real about the ‘list it’ part.» This alleged falsehood hasn’t been confirmed by HGTV, but we wouldn’t put it past those ratings-hungry TV producers.

Unfinished business

The Hooked on Houses blog has also compiled complaints about the status of remodeled homes. Some say projects touted as «finished» at the end of the show aren’t always picture perfect. «My friend’s room was only half finished as they ran into more problems during the renos, so they took the shot to look as though the rooms are complete,» said one reader. «Actually, they even did not finish sewing some of the cushions for the couches and just wrapped the fabric and placed it just so to look as though it was.» In other words, the blemished rooms were allegedly made to look put together and attractive thanks to clever staging and talented videography, you know, like the way you look after filtering your Instagram selfies.
