I’m sure someone else has a better answer, but

With «less» after you’ve opened the file:

G goes to the bottom of the file

^b goes up one page

? searches backwards.

As you said, you can open the file with +G and then use ? and ^b to scroll up. There are likely clever awk things you can do to achieve the same thing in a script.

use:

less +F /path/to/your/file

that’s less but starting from the bottom. Also, with +F, if the file is being written to while you are using less, that additional content gets output. This can be useful for logs.

Use the up arrow key to go backwards line by line or ctl+b to go page by page.

I’m surprised nobody brought this up before, but:

?pattern searches for pattern backwards.

N finds the previous match of the pattern (that is, searching backwards).

For reference, /pattern searches for pattern forward and n finds the next match of the pattern. That’s the way the search is commonly used.

Open the file straight to the end (+G) with less +G path/to/filename.

It will automatically start «calculating line numbers.» If the file is huge (ex: many GiB), press Ctrl + C to stop that, since it could take forever.

Now, here are some keys to navigate:

  1. Up Arrow = scroll one line up
  2. Down Arrow = scroll one line down
  3. u = scroll a half page up
  4. d = scroll a half page down
  5. PageUp = scroll a full page up
  6. PageDown = scroll a full page down
  7. Use / to search forwards, pressing n to go to the next match down, and Shift + n to go to the next match up.
  8. Use ? to search backwards, pressing n to go to the next match up, and Shift + n to go to the next match down.

Slurring your words usually carries a negative connotation and is typically caused by anxiety, being drunk, or having a neurological problem.[1]
While most people try to fix slurred speech, you may want to intentionally slur your words. Luckily, if you position your tongue and mouth the right way, adjust your speech, and practice, you can realistically slur your words.

  1. Image titled Get Rid of a Lisp Step 11

    1

Keep your lips as close together as you can when you speak. The less open your mouth is, the less you’ll be able to enunciate your words and the more you’ll slur. Speak while keeping your lips only partially open. This should add to the slurring of your speech.[2]

  2. Image titled Get Rid of a Lisp Step 4

    2

Push your tongue up to the roof of your mouth. Less room in your mouth can cause you to slur. Push the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth and try to speak. You’ll notice that if you don’t move your tongue, you’ll develop a slur.[3]

  3. Image titled Give a Speech in Front of Your Class Step 1

    3

Speak with a pen in your mouth. Put a pen in your mouth and speak while your tongue is under the pen. You’ll notice that you are slurring your words. Practice with a pen in your mouth, then try to replicate the position of your tongue after you take it out of your mouth.[4]

  4. Advertisement

  1. Image titled Read Lips Step 7

    1

Don’t use punctuation. Don’t leave a pause for periods and commas. Instead, just flow from statement to statement as if it were a run on sentence. This will make your words sound slurred and disjointed.[5]

    • Speaking on a lot of topics in succession while avoiding punctuation will make it seem like you’re slurring your sentences together.
  2. Image titled Speak Gibberish Step 5

    2

Alternate speaking quickly and slowly. Changing up the speed of your speech will also replicate a slur. Go from speaking fairly fast to slow within your sentences.[6]

  3. Image titled Be a Very Cold and Quiet Person Step 14

    3

Don’t say entire words. Cutting off the beginning or the ending of a word in a sentence will make it hard for people to understand you and will make it sound like you are slurring. Say only the middle portions of words instead of the entire word to make it sound like you’re slurring.

    • For example, if you want to say “Hey, over there,” you can instead say “Ey, ov ere” to make it sound like you’re slurring.
  4. Image titled Get Rid of a Lisp Step 8

    4

Repeat words that you’re saying incorrectly. One way to make a slur seem realistic is by repeating the same word that you’re saying incorrectly over and over. This will make it seem like you’re unable to get the word out and will increase the believability of your slur.[7]

    • You can say something like, «Tey te eh They we war were oin going,» instead of saying «They were going.»
  5. Image titled Speak Gibberish Step 4

    5

Alternate the pitch of your voice from high to low. Your pitch is the tone or key that you’re speaking in. Instead of keeping your pitch the same as you talk, speak in a high, then low voice and continue alternating between them.

    • You can say something like “You know, I like you.” Start with a high pitch for “You,” then quickly lower the pitch for the word “know.” Keep your pitch low for “I,” then raise it again for “like you.”
  6. Advertisement

  1. Image titled Be an Oddly Nice, Attractive, Sophisticated, Teenage Girl Step 17

    1

Practice slurring when you’re alone. Slur your words when you’re alone to perfect it. The more that you practice slurring, the easier it will be to start slurring on command.

  2. Image titled Become Instagram Famous Step 9

    2

Record yourself slurring. Use an audio recorder to record your slurring practice sessions. Often, what we hear in our head differs to what we sound like to other people. Record yourself and listen to the playback, then adjust how you’re speaking to improve your slur.[8]

  3. Image titled Get Rid of a Lisp Step 26

    3

Ask friends or family if your slur is believable. Practice your slur in front of people that you know and ask them if it sounds legitimate. They can help you evaluate the authenticity of your slur and clue you into things that you should adjust to sound more realistic.

You’re all set!

Rather than ask for your favorite, lets just list them off.

What are the more useful commands inside less?

Personally, I use:

  • / (search forward)
  • ? (search backwards)
  • F (enable tail -f like behvaior,
Ctrl-C to break out of it)
  • v (open file in $EDITOR for editing, defaults to vi/vim)

Others?

2

One can also use the mark feature to remember (and jump back to) specific positions in the file.

For example, type ma to mark a position with the label "a". To jump back to the position, simply type 'a. Labels can be any alphabet (case sensitive) thus allowing up to 52 possible marks ([a-zA-Z]) although I seldom use more than 2.

2

  • u — up half page
  • d — down half page
  • k — scroll single line up
  • j — scroll single line down
  • -i — case insensitive searching unless pattern contains capitals (as clo or in less)
  • / /pattern/ — search (used with n)
  • -p /pattern/ open file at /pattern/ (as clo)
  • & /pattern/ show lines containing /pattern/ (like grep)

3

-S (either at the command line or typing - and S while running less) chops long lines and is helpful when viewing e.g. log files. Type - and S again to switch back.

Other than the obvious, my two favorites:

  1. export LESS=-FX — if there is under one page, I don’t need to press q to quit
  2. Type /^HEADING to search for headings and /^ *-option to search for options
(especially useful in the bash man page, which in very large)

1

  • ^f — page down
  • ^b — page up
  • G — go to the end of buffer
  • gg — go to the beginning of the buffer

also — most of them are just vim-like functions for navigation.

2

This isn’t a function inside of less, but it is a useful feature.

I like man pages, and prefer less(1) as my pager. However, most GNU software keeps the manual in the info(1) (GNU Texinfo) format, and I’m not a fan of the info(1) interface. Just give me less.

So, I read info(1) pages using less instead. The following command will print out the info(1) pages, using the familiar interface of less!

info gpg |less

  • n — continue searching for your pattern in the same direction
  • N — continue searching for your pattern in the opposite direction

If you started searching for ‘foo’ and want to keep finding instances of it, you can hit / followed by return over and over, or you can just hit n (with no return) to keep on searching in the same direction.

  • -N — show line numbers
  • -I — ignore case in your search pattern (useful when looking for errors that might be spelled as ‘ERROR|Error|error’)
  • -G — turn off highlighting

You can type those while less is already viewing a file and they’ll take affect on whatever file you’re viewing. You can undo them by typing them again.

Although it took a question here to remind me how to do it, I always liked the -e or --quit-at-eof option of less.

This nominally causes any page down at the end of the file to quit out of less, but has the useful side effect that if you specified multiple files, it also causes a page down at the end of one file to take you on to the next. That can save loads of :n‘s if scanning through a bunch of files.

Other (for me) useful commands are J, K, that works as j, k, but do not stop scrolling at the begin or end of file: it is useful because I often use the terminal border as a visual marker.

As a note, they seem to be undocumented, afaik.

Next, I use less to pipe together zipped and not zipped file (it works thanks to lesspipe), as in less /var/log/dpkg.log* | less

Not much of a list, but nonetheless quite useful. Just search through man pages by jumping back and forth to matched (case-insensitive) expressions.

# use n or shift-n to cycle through the matches
man bash | less -Ip 'parameter expansion'

I like the adjustable horizontal scroll option, i.e. prepend the left/right arrow key with a number and less will scroll that number of columns from then on, works best with chop-lines option -S.

less reads command line switches from the $LESS variable on startup, here are my preferred switches:
