Today’s post will briefly review a website I recently came across which caught my eye right away. This website is www.just-the-word.com. Just-the-Word is a collocations dictionary, like www.ozdic.com, but it is slightly different. What makes it special is that you can type in a word and it will tell you not only the different possible combinations, but it will also give you an idea of the frequency with which those combinations occur. Let’s see an example with the word «awareness«:
In this example, which only shows «verb + awareness» collocations, we can see at first sight that «raise», «increase» and «develop» collocate extremely well with «awareness«, given the long green bar next to them. If this bar were red, it would mean that it is a bad combination. Also, although this picture shows only collocations of verbs with «awareness«, there are plenty more which I haven’t included: adjective+awareness, noun+awareness, awareness+preposition, etc. In order to visualise these, you can either scroll up/down, or choose them in the menu on the right, which looks like this:
By clicking on one of the combinations in the picture above, you will be taken directly to that particular section.
Another interesting option is that you can create a word cloud with these collocations. This is created through another useful website, www.wordle.com.
The nice thing about this is that it gives you a visual representation of the collocations, as the size of the phrases is in accordance with their frequency. This might be useful for a lesson, a blog or a social networking update. Besides, you can choose from a variety of options to visualise this word cloud.
So that’s it. Just-the-Word has other interesting features, but the ones in this post are the ones I believe are most useful for both English language teachers and learners. For more info, follow this link and let the creators convince you themselves.

Just The Word
Just the Word is a tool that can help you choose the right words and phrases in English. It can also help you correct your writing mistakes. It is a combination of dictionary and thesaurus, and is very useful for learning collocations. Collocations are pairings or groups of words that are commonly found together. To test out Just the Word, go to the search box on the home page and type in a word such as “life”. Then hit Return on your keyboard. Look through the results that come up. The clusters show words that are related in meaning. The unclustered words are not closely related to each other. Click on the links to review example sentences. On the right side of your screen, you will see the parts of speech related to your word or phrase. To use this part of the tool, you will need to learn the short forms used for different parts of speech (eg. ADJ for adjective). Just the Word also helps you understand how common a collocation is in English. Note: Some words that you type in may not bring up any results.

Если работа с корпусами текстов и подготовка заданий на их основе представляется сложной задачей и / или занимает у вас слишком много времени, но идея пользоваться данными о живом языке все же импонирует — good news everyone (с)! Существуют сайты, фокусирующие массивы данных из корпусов на одной или нескольких задачах. Интерфейс таких сайтов гораздо проще и более интуитивен, некоторые из них можно смело рекомендовать ученикам для самостоятельного использования.
Для обзора выбраны пять сайтов, пользовалась ими в разное время и для разных целей. Задача обзора — скорее рассказать о возможностях, нежели составить рейтинг. Как вы сможете заметить, сервисы разноплановые, их трудно сравнить по фиксированному набору критериев.
Just The Word
Ресурс основан на данных British National Corpus и позволяет найти быстро найти collocations для заданных слов. Краткие инструкции — в разделе Getting started.
Начальная часть выдачи для слова relief, например, выглядит так:
Collocations организованы по структурам (структуры представлены справа в виде формул), а внутри этих групп — по кластерам, в один кластер объединены синонимичные или близкие по смыслу сочетания (e.g. give / grant / offer/ provide relief). При выборе конкретного сочетания увидите примеры из корпуса:
В целом, достаточно простой и информативный сервис. Организован, в первую очередь, по структурному принципу, семантические особенности в большинстве случаев придется вычленять самостоятельно.
Visuwords
Ресурс позиционируется как «A modern dictionary for a modern world. Not your grandfather’s dictionary.» Основная функция — визуализация значения слова, а также его структурных и семантических связей в виде spidergrams.
Легенда слева помогает интерпретировать выдачу. В примере представлены в основном разные значения слова, при наведении курсора на одно из значений можно увидеть краткое толкование и пример. Для двух значений представлены гиперонимы (например, стрелка цвета turquoise показывает, что relief в значении «aid for aged, or indigent, or handicapped» является «a kind» of social welfare, public assistance). Для значения easing визуализирована слово производная связь с глаголом relieve, а также его синонимы (серая пунктирная линия).
С легендой, возможно, придется немного разобраться (сайт предлагает толкование ее формулировок), но оно того стоит. Для учеников высоких уровней такое наглядное представление словарной информации может быть очень полезным.
Неочевидная «фича» — диаграмму можно перестраивать на свой вкус, перетягивая круги курсором.
Lextutor (Compleat Lexical Tutor)
Первое впечатление от оформления сайта и его интерфейса — God, this is crowded!
Сайт разрабатывается канадским энтузиастом, позиционируется как предназначенный для Tutorial, Research, and Teachers. Полное описание функционала — в разделе Good Old Review. Если всмотреться и погрузиться в ресурс, можно найти много полезного, от инструмента для создания flashcards и подборки всевозможных тестов на измерение словарного запаса до сервиса по вычленению ключевых слов в любом тексте.
Из собственно corpus-informed функций может заинтересовать Concord writer, его функция — показывать примеры из корпуса для слов, вызывающих затруднения. Набирая текст в окне, можно в любой момент на этой же странице обратиться к корпусу, чтобы проверить написание, сочетаемость и т.п.:
Особенно рекомендую раздел Corpus Correct, в нем предлагается исправить ошибки в предложениях. При затруднениях можно обратиться к данным корпуса, нажав на ссылку CONC в третьем столбце, и увидеть соответствующие конкордансы.
Список возможных грамматических тем — в третьей строке, выделена серым. Отличное задание, чтобы познакомить ваших учеников с корпусом и его возможностями.
Sketchengine
В некотором смысле — противоположность предыдущему сайту. Платный ресурс (но есть 30-ти дневный free trial), разрабатывается группой специалистов, высококачественный дизайн, интуитивный интерфейс, впечатляющий набор функций. Все возможности представлены в коротком видео и кратком описании.
Мне очень нравится функция сравнения слов по нескольким параметрам. В примере — выдача для глаголов relieve и relive. Цветовое кодирование позволяет компактно и детально представить структурные и смысловые особенности каждого из глаголов.
Рекомендую попробовать, получите удовольствие от этого ресурса, и практическое, и эстетическое. Продлеваю бесплатную подписку уже в третий раз 🙂

Collins Grammar Patterns
Это раздел сайта Collins dictionary, построенного на базе данных Collins Corpus (того же, что лежит в основе известных Collins COBUILS Dictionaries). Этот раздел — грамматический, организован по трем классам слов: Adjectives, Nouns, Verbs. Для каждого представлены десятки грамматических моделей, которые могут быть использованы в качестве примеров и / или материала для упражнений.

Детальная структурная категоризация моделей позволяет быстро найти нужный материал. Примеры из этого ресурса особенно хороши для подготовки подстановочных упражнений.

Moreover, Just The Word has yet to grow their social media reach, as it’s relatively low at the moment: 68 StumbleUpon views, 24 LinkedIn shares and 22 Twitter mentions. When we write, we search our knowledge of words in two ways. We choose between words that mean similar things. A thesaurus gives us access to this sort of knowledge. But our choice constrains and is constrained by the other words in the sentence. We know, or need to know, which word combinations sound natural. A dictionary gives us access to some of this sort of knowledge.
By analysing a huge amount of English text, we’ve built up a highly detailed knowledge base of the word combinations whose mastery is at the heart of fluent English.
Show combinations
Type a word into the box and hit return or Show Combinations. JustTheWord will give you a detailed description of the company which that word keeps in modern-day English. To help you find your way to the information you need, in the right-hand frame you’ll find the part(s)-of-speech and the types of relation that the word is found in. If you’re looking for the right adjective to modify a noun you’ve chosen, click on the ‘ADJ mod <word>’ link. If you want a verb with the noun as its object, follow the ‘V obj <word>’ link. Within many types of relation you’ll find the uses of the word clustered into groups with a similar meaning. The words that are not assigned to a cluster are grouped together at the end of the relation.
After each combination you’ll find its frequency in our corpus, about 80,000,000 words of the British National Corpus (BNC). The green bar by each combination gives a measure of how strong it is. Technically, the bar indicates the t-score. A larger t-score means that the combination occurs more often than you’d expect given the frequency of the parts. What you see is only those combinations whose frequency and t-score exceed certain thresholds. These vary dynamically as we try to show you something for every word, and not too much for the commoner words.
If you see an inflected form of a word in a combination (or a form preceded by ‘.’), this means that the combination includes this precise form. But if a word is in its dictionary form, it may need to be inflected. Nouns in their dictionary form might also need an article (and conversely, if an article is present, then the form of the noun will be as given). You can check the variability of a form, or any other properties of a combination, by clicking on the combination itself. This will show you some sentences from our corpus that have been analysed as …”
