Is the word special an adjective

There are many words in the English Language that have different grammatical functions and forms. Let explore this phenomenon a little further.

“Special” can be regarded as an adjective or noun depending on the context and also the way it is placed in a sentence.

Let us look a little more into this topic with the help of a few facts and examples.

When is “special” considered as adjective?

As mentioned before a word like “special” has a couple forms when it comes to grammar. Let us take a look at one of them.

“Special” is considered as an adjective when it is used before a noun. Since adjectives are also determiners of sorts, “special” must be used to determine the quality of a noun for it to be regarded as an adjective.

Let us take a look at a couple examples on this topic.

Examples Explanations
1. That girl is a special student as she has contributed in bettering her class. If when a word like ‘special’ is used in front of a noun, as is the case here, it is automatically considered as an adjective.
2. We ordered a special cake for him since he is such a good boss as well as friend. Since the word ‘special’ here as well is used before a noun and helps the reader in imbibing more information about said noun, it consequently functions as an adjective.
Examples of “special” as a adjective.

Is “special” a descriptive adjective?

There are many forms of adjectives in the English Language and “special” is one of them. Let us take a look.

“Special” is a descriptive adjective as it is primarily used to describe the nouns it is placed in front of. More specifically, it lends a description of positive quality to the noun that is used in front of.

Let us look at a few examples of “special” being used a descriptive adjective.

Examples Explanations
1. This delivery is special and I got it this morning. It is not always necessary to place adjectives before nouns in order to describe them. In this particular sentence, the descriptive adjective ‘special’ shows that adjectives are still thought of as words that seem to have a direct descriptive role in relation to a noun.
2. My school will always have a special place in my heart. In this situation too, the word ‘special’ functions as a descriptive adjective since it precedes a noun and helps the reader understand that noun better.
Examples of “special” as a descriptive adjective.

When is “special” a descriptive adjective?

“Special” is a descriptive adjective almost all of the time. Since this particular word expands on the quality of the noun it is used to describe, it functions only as a descriptive adjective. There are no exceptions to this case.

Let us look at a few more examples on this topic.

Examples Explanations
1. Holiday season is a special time for our entire family since it is the only time we get to spend together. The fact that the word ‘special’ provides a descriptive element to the noun it has been used in front of, giving further information about the state or circumstance of said noun, makes it clear that in this context, it serves as a descriptive adjective.
2. This recipe is special as I cooked it up when I was all cooped up at home. Nouns can be described without an adjective always coming before them.  Adjectives are still regarded as words that seem to have a direct descriptive role in relation to a noun, as evidenced by the use of the descriptive adjective ‘special’ in this specific sentence.
3. Our professor is special to all his students due to his out of the box teaching methods and lectures. The fact that the word ‘special’ provides a descriptive element to the noun it has been used in front of, giving further information about the state or circumstance of said noun, makes it clear that in this context, it serves as a descriptive adjective.
4. Our college took us to a special picnic this week as it is our last year as students in this institution. Here too, it is obvious that the word ‘special’ serves as a descriptive adjective in this case since it adds a descriptive aspect to the noun it has been used in front of, providing further information about the situation or state of said noun.
5. Today was special since we got so much good news from three different places. Nouns can be described without an adjective being used in front of them all the time. As seen by the use of the descriptive adjective ‘special’ in this particular sentence, adjectives are still thought to have a direct descriptive function in connection to a noun if used in the correct context
Examples of “special” as a descriptive adjective.

Apart from an adjective, the term “special” has one other grammatical form. Let us take a look into what that might be.

“Special” is a noun when used in a certain way and context. It is important for this word to be used as an object or subject of a sentence without being used in front of other nouns for it to be considered a noun itself.

Let us take a look at a couple examples on “special” being used as a noun.

Examples Explanations
1. Let us take a look at the specials on this menu before deciding what to order. As one can see over here the word ‘specials’ has been used in reference to certain food items, thus making it function as a noun and not an adjective. Such nouns do a double job of being a noun itself and also providing information about its own quality.
2. I spent most of my childhood watching after-school specials with my brother. Over here the word ‘specials’ has been used as a substitute for a television broadcast show. Here too, this particular noun serves as a noun as well as renders a meaning of quality, all in one word.
Examples of “special” as a noun.

When is “special” a noun?

“Special” is a noun when it is used as word to substitute ‘things’, ‘broadcasts’ or ‘products’ that need to be marketed in a particularly positive way.

Let us understand the concept of “special” as a noun with the help of a few more examples.

Examples Explanations
1. The television show will be shooting an episode which will be a holiday special and it will air before the end of the year. Here, the term “television broadcast show” has been replaced by “specials.” This particular noun also serves as a noun in this instance and also conveys a quality meaning in a single word.
2. I love this restaurant as the waiters usually narrate the specials from memory. As one can see, the word “specials” has been employed in this context to refer to specific meal items, making it a noun rather than an adjective. Such nouns serve a dual purpose by serving as both a noun and a source of information about their own characteristic.
3. We attended the shooting of the new year special that will be aired on the 31st. Here, the term “television broadcast show” has been replaced by ‘specials’.  This particular noun also serves as a noun in this instance and also conveys a quality meaning in a single word.
4. They got a huge discount on the back-to-school specials since they were the first ones to buy many of the products. In this sentence, the word ‘specials’ has been used as a substitute for back-to-school products. Wording certain terms in such flowery language causes a larger influx of customers to buy said product and that is the case here, since just the word ‘specials’ enough to provide information about availability as well as quality of said items.
5. This is a secret special that not many people know about and is only reserved for a few regular customers. Even though it is only one food item, the word ‘special’ has been employed to replace it in this instance. And once more, the noun informs the reader of its own quality at the same time.
Examples of “special” as a noun.

Conclusion

Therefore, it has been established that the word “special” can clearly be put to use as an adjective as well as a noun, provided that it be used in the correct context.

Which sentence is correct?

Origin of special

First recorded in 1175–1225; Middle English (adjective), from Latin speciālis “of a given species,” equivalent to speci(ēs) “form, kind, sort” + -ālis adjective suffix; see species, -al1, especial

synonym study for special

5. Special, particular, specific refer to something pointed out for attention and consideration. Special means given unusual treatment because of being uncommon: a special sense of a word. Particular implies something selected from the others of its kind and set off from them for attention: a particular variety of orchid. Specific implies plain and unambiguous indication of a particular instance, example, etc.: a specific instance of cowardice.

usage note for special

8. In the 20th century, special was used freely as a modifier describing services or accessibility resources for people with disabilities or disabled people’s functional needs, and sometimes as a euphemism for disabled to label the people themselves. Most euphemistic language for disabilities and people with disabilities is no longer preferred, and special used in this way may be considered offensive, especially when used to describe a person.
The phrase special needs is somewhat more accepted, but is less common than it used to be. Instead, when possible, make reference to the specific disability in question. However, the fixed expression special education is still an official designation in public education and continues to be used, even by speakers who otherwise avoid special and its compounds.

usage note for special

In American English the adjective special is overwhelmingly more common than especial in all senses: He will be of special help if you can’t understand the documentation. The reverse is true of the adverbs; here especially is by far the more common: He will be of great help, especially if you have trouble understanding the documentation. Only when the sense “specifically” is intended is specially more idiomatic: The machine was specially designed for use by a left-handed operator.

Grammarians of the past have explored the possible difference between special and especial. They found that there can be a little or possibly not much of a difference in the usage of the two words, special and especial. The two words, of course, have some difference in the method of their usage.

What does Special mean?

Special is an adjective. More specifically, special is a common adjective. Special has varied meanings such as ‘distinct way,’ ‘designed for a particular purpose’ and the like. According to the Oxford dictionary, the prominent meaning for special is ‘better, greater or otherwise different from what is usual.’ Specially is the adverbial form of the common adjective special. This adverbial form is not common though. Specially means ‘in a distinguished manner,’ ‘particularly’ and the like, whereas ‘especially’ means ‘exceptionally,’ particularly’ and the like.

An example for special is given in the following sentence.

They always made special dinner on the days he came home for vacation.

The word special here means that this dinner was different from the normal dinners they had.

An example of a sentence wherein the word specially can be used is,

The dress was specially made for colder seasons.

In this sentence, some distinctive purpose is intended in the making of the dress.

What does Especial mean?

Especial is also an adjective. However, when special is a common adjective, especial is an uncommon adjective. The word especial has varied meanings too such as ‘noteworthy,’ ‘exceptional’ and the like. According to the Oxford dictionary, especially mean ‘better or greater than usual; special’ or ‘for or belonging chiefly to one person or thing.’ Though special is known as a common adjective, you would find that the adverbial form especially is more often used these days.

Difference Between Special and Especial

An example of a sentence wherein the word especially can be used is,

Phillip did especially well in the university examinations.

Here, by the use of the adverb especially some noteworthy performance is expressed.

Now let us see how especial is used in a sentence.

Her sister’s death brought especial benefits to Mary.

The use of especial in this sentence means that the death brought especial benefits only for Mary.

What is the difference between Special and Especial?

It is interesting to note that these two words, special and especial are used synonymously often with no difference whatsoever. The strict grammarian would follow certain principles in the usage of these two words in the sense that he would use especial if he wants to emphasize the exceptional or the noteworthy quality of a thing or place. The grammarian would prefer the usage of the word special if he wants to lay emphasis on the distinctive purpose of something or some place for that matter.

Sometimes both the words can be used to convey the same sense as in the examples mentioned below to illustrate the use of specially and especially.

It was not specially hot, and

It was not especially hot

Here both the sentences have more or less the same sense. Nothing extra is suggested by the usage of words, specially and especially. It is interesting to note that some of the best of the grammarians opine that the adjective especial is rare. They would say that the usage of special would suffice in all cases. They say,

He took special interest in the project, is as good and connotative as saying,

He took especial interest in the project.

These grammarians feel there is of course some kind of difference when it comes to the usage of the adverbial forms, especially and specially. Especially follows a subject.

All my classmates are fond of the sport of football. Edwin especially does not miss a single football match in the club premises.

Specially is used to convey the sense of ‘for a special purpose.’

In the sentence,

These shoes were specially made for winter

you can find the special purpose that was meant in the sentence.

Summary:

Special vs Especial

• Special is a common adjective. Especial is an uncommon adjective.

• The adverbial form of special is specially and the adverbial form of especial is especially.

• Though special is a common adjective, it the adverbial form especial that is most commonly used.

• Grammarians consider using the adjective special for both special and especial is not a problem.

• However, the adverbs especially and specially are used very carefully according to the meaning intended. Especially follows a subject; specially is used to convey the sense ‘for a special purpose.’

For those interested in a little info about this site: it’s a side project that I developed while working on Describing Words and Related Words. Both of those projects are based around words, but have much grander goals. I had an idea for a website that simply explains the word types of the words that you search for — just like a dictionary, but focussed on the part of speech of the words. And since I already had a lot of the infrastructure in place from the other two sites, I figured it wouldn’t be too much more work to get this up and running.

The dictionary is based on the amazing Wiktionary project by wikimedia. I initially started with WordNet, but then realised that it was missing many types of words/lemma (determiners, pronouns, abbreviations, and many more). This caused me to investigate the 1913 edition of Websters Dictionary — which is now in the public domain. However, after a day’s work wrangling it into a database I realised that there were far too many errors (especially with the part-of-speech tagging) for it to be viable for Word Type.

Finally, I went back to Wiktionary — which I already knew about, but had been avoiding because it’s not properly structured for parsing. That’s when I stumbled across the UBY project — an amazing project which needs more recognition. The researchers have parsed the whole of Wiktionary and other sources, and compiled everything into a single unified resource. I simply extracted the Wiktionary entries and threw them into this interface! So it took a little more work than expected, but I’m happy I kept at it after the first couple of blunders.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: the UBY project (mentioned above), @mongodb and express.js.

Currently, this is based on a version of wiktionary which is a few years old. I plan to update it to a newer version soon and that update should bring in a bunch of new word senses for many words (or more accurately, lemma).
