Is the word couple plural

At first glance there would appear to be very little about the word couple which could confuse anyone, or about which one might raise any objections. It is a simple little word, unassuming perhaps, and without any great aspirations, but workmanlike and stoic. But once you begin to examine this word a veritable cavalcade of questions arise. Is couple always used in the singular, or can it be plural? Must it refer to naught but two, or may it also mean “three,” or even some larger and indeterminate number? Should you write «I’ve got a couple bones to pick with you, Merriam-Webster,» or should it be «a couple of bones»?

Aargh! Why must life be so hard?

couple

When writing of a couple getting married, it is more common to use the plural form («the couple are to be wed»). When writing of an established couple, it is more common to use a singular verb («the couple has six puppies, each more destructive than the next»).

We don’t have an answer to that last question. However, we do have some things to say on the subject of couple. The first thing we would say is that if you have come to this word with some hope that you will find a lack of semantic ambiguity, you have set yourself up for disappointment.

Is couple singular or plural?

Couple is a singular noun. It is, however, also a collective noun, and these creatures will sometimes find themselves paired with a plural verb, and sometimes with a singular one. The advice that editors and usage guides will typically give in this case is to strive for agreement in your writing; if you are writing of your in-laws and introduce them by stating “the family is crazy” you should not later change to writing “the family are.”

Additionally, it is suggested that, when possible, the writer should attempt to use the plural or singular verb depending on how they are thinking of the members of this collective noun (as individuals or as a group). Thus, when writing of a couple getting married (or divorced) it appears to be more common to consider them as two distinct people, and to use the plural form («the couple are to be wed…”). When writing of a couple who are an established entity, it is more common to pair them with a singular verb (“the couple has three children, each more loathsome than the next”).

It should be noted that, no matter what kind of verb you pair couple with, the pronoun of choice will always be a plural one (they, them, or their).

Can couple refer to three things?

Yes! You may not like it, but whether or not you like a particular use of a word has very little effect on how tens of millions of other people will use it. This is sad, but true. Some usage guides will advise against using couple to refer to the three or seven beers you had last evening, but most modern dictionaries include a definition for couple that is more or less “somewhere in the neighborhood of two.” Dictionaries do not include this definition to make you unhappy; they include it because it accurately reflects the language use of a substantial number of people.

Is it «a couple of bones» or «a couple bones»?

The nice thing about this question is that no matter what answer you settle on, there will be some guides of yore (or of late) which state that you have made the wrong choice, thus freeing you from having to worry overmuch. In the late 19th century, a number of commentators held that couple should not be simply used for any group of two, but only for two things that were linked or united. This was based on the etymological fallacy that because couple comes from the Latin word for “bond” (copula) it should retain that meaning in English.

But a new complaint came about in the 20th century, when people noticed that couple was being used as a quasi-adjective (“can you lend me a couple dollars?”). This caused many guides to take the position that, since couple hasn’t filled out all the proper paperwork to get its adjective visa yet and is still properly a noun, it should always be followed by of in this use. Our records indicate that couple is routinely used without being followed by of in general writing (especially when used with more; “I’ll have a couple of more” sounds quite odd). This prepositional omission is generally avoided in formal writing.

We will end here. We still do not know why life must be so hard.

    Yes, you can.

The ngrams suggest it’s the more common form.

When the definite article is used the position is a little different, ngrams.

I’d more naturally use the plural form.

I would generally treat ‘a couple’ as plural myself though. The Ngrams might reflect AmE preference, and for some reason BrE figures do not seem available.

This is a distinct difference between American and British English, and of course the subject has already been discussed many times in this forum. As a Brit, I find the use of a singular verb with “a/the couple” (i.e. two people) hard to get my head around in any context (unless it’s specifically the unit of two that’s meant), but absurd in some statements, such as “the couple sleeps in separate bedrooms”!

    LEXICO on collective nouns:
A collective noun can be used with either a singular verb (my family was always hard-working) or a plural verb (his family were disappointed in him). Generally speaking, in Britain it is more usual for collective nouns to be followed by a plural verb, while in the US the opposite is true. Notice that, if the verb is singular, any following pronouns must be too: the government is prepared to act, but not until it knows the outcome of the latest talks (not … until they know the outcome …)

In what follows, I am referring only to BrE.

Many ‘group words’ can be followed by a singular or plural verb form, depending on whether the speaker is thinking of one group or more than one person in a group; so:

The government has decided to do away with the Council Tax. or:
The government have decided to do away with the Council Tax.

However, the word couple is always followed by a plural verb form:

«A couple are trying to reach a mutual agreement.»

Indeed no. I’ll start to write for one of these threads, supremely confident that I know exactly what the right answer is. Then I’ll say it and the incorrect alternative over as I write, and begin to have doubts. By the time I have got to the end, I have lost all confidence in myself. I do not submit the post and have to go away to a reference book to check up on what I KNEW five minutes before.

«A couple» is of uncertain meaning. «The couple», as in a married couple, is singular to me.

    ‘A couple

    of people

    are….

    The couple is…
    The team is…
    The government is….

I know that British speakers say ‘The team are…’.

There are long lists of words which are often confusing and may result to a grammatical error if not used properly in a sentence.

While I have considered a good number of these words in previous articles published on this blog, i shall once again consider a word which has been commonly abused due to perception of pluralisation and otherwise in the use of the word. In this article I shall consider the word ‘Couple’ and ‘couples’ so as to examine their meaning and correct usage in a sentence.

Which Is Correct, Couple or Couples?

Hence, when people are romantically and sexually connected with each other by marriage, relationship or association, they are widely referred to as a couple. Meaning of Couples

The term Couples is a noun widely regarded as the plural form of the above defined term ‘Couple’. It is usually used with a plural verb. For instance, the couples are everywhere. Or it often used to refer to more than one couple. For instance, yesterday was a couple’s night; there are lots of young couples in our area, several couples were on the dance floor, et cetera.

    Is 'couple' singular or plural?

    Is ‘couple’ singular or plural?

From the above definition and examples of both terms, we can see that both terms have some significance in English language, and can only exclusively fit in some grammatical context. That being the case, how can we decipher of which of the term is correct? Which fits in the most in a grammatical context and the appropriate way of using it?

The term Couple is generally referred to as the correct word in English Language, as it is widely accepted as a word in the English lexis unlike the word ‘Couples’. This term is believed to represent both singular and plural verb forms as opposed to the common analogy that ‘couple’ means singular, while ‘couple’ refers to plural.

The Merriam Webster dictionary posited that the term ‘Couple’ is a collective noun; which refers to a group of people who are in a relationship, as such it could fit into the context of singular and plural, and it uses either a singular or plural verb to convey a message in a sentence.

"was a couple" or "were a couple"?

“was a couple” or “were a couple”?

For example: The couple has four children (singular verb) the couple are wedding tomorrow (Plural verb). Thus, the term ‘couple’ is a word of universal usage and is generally accepted as the grammatically correct word in English Language. However, there are some instances wherein the usage of the word ‘couple’ may not appear correct and pluralizing the word as ‘Couples’ may seem more apposite and vice versa.

Let’s consider some of these instances:

    a. When referring to a person: When referring to a person in a sentence, it is apposite to use the term ‘couple’ as it is best used in a singular form. Hence, when you are referring to a person or two people who are in a relationship, you only refer to them as a couple. For instance, David and Faith is the best couple, the couple went to Dubai for their honey moon, the couple had a great time, they make a nice couple, and each couple was asked to donate $100.

In this context, you cannot use the word ‘couples’. For instance: Each couples was asked to donate or $100 or David and Faith is the best couples. This is a grammatical blunder, and in the context of one or two persons, the word ‘couple’ is only correct.

    b. When referring to more than two persons: Generally, when referring to more than one couple or three or more persons, the word ‘couples’ is commonly used. For example: it was a couple’s night, more than ten couples were present at my show, we entertained all the couples, the couples were excited. In this instance, it is only correct to use the term ‘couples’ and wrong to use the term ‘couple’.

For example: more than ten couple were present. This sentence is grammatically wrong, and as such we can say using the term ‘Couple’ is grammatically incorrect in this instance.

Nonetheless, sometimes, the word ‘couple’ could also be used when referring to more than two persons. For example, only a few couple came for the show, every couple was left satisfied.

    c. When using a Singular verb: This generally refers to when one person is performing an action. A singular verb is a word which is used with singular subjects in a sentence to express their actions. Such words which is often used are: he, she, and words ending with ‘s’ and ‘es’ in a present tense. For example: He loves the couple, she writes a couple dialogues, the couple plays too much, and the outfit of the couple is great.

In the above instance, it is only correct to use the term ‘couple’ and totally wrong to use ‘couples’. For instance: The outfit of the couples is great. This sentence is totally wrong as it is incorrect to use the term ‘couples’ in a sentence with a singular verb.

    d. When using a plural verb: A Plural verb is used when more than one person is performing an action and it is usually used in present tense to pair with plural noun in a sentence. A plural verb doesn’t‘s’ added at the end of its word and could take the form of words such as: are, were, have, and, et cetera.

When using a plural verb in a sentence, it is generally accepted to use the term ‘couples’ instead. For example: All the couples are looking stunning, the couples were having a wonderful time, holidays were given to multiple couples, they are one of my favourite couples. It is grammatically wrong to say they are one of my favourite couple or all the couple are looking stunning or holidays were given to multiple couple.

Thus, we can all generally agree that when using a plural verb, it is apposite to use the term ‘Couples’. However, there some instances wherein you can rightfully use the term ‘Couple’ with a plural verb. For example: The couple are enjoying themselves, he went to carry the newly-wedded couple, et cetera.

In conclusion, it is instructive to note the term ‘couple’ is both a singular and collective noun and as such can  perfectly be used with either a singular or plural verb, while the word ‘Couples’ is a plural noun which can be only paired with a plural verb.

Thus, both words are correct in their own way. No one is more correct than the other, it just depends on their context of usage, as there are some contexts wherein the term ‘couple’ may not fit in and some context wherein the term ‘couples’ may only fit in and vice versa.

The only difference is that the term ‘couples’ is the plural form of the term ‘couple’ and the term ‘couple’ is widely  is widely accepted and generally used and is applicable in way more context than the term ‘couples’. I trust this article was insightful?
