Is saying the word correct rude

  • #1

Hi!

I’m really puzzled, ’cause in theory, according to grammar books, for one-syllable adjectives we have to use «-er», but «ruder» doesn’t sound very well to me and, what’s more, I’ve just seen «more rude» in a piece of news of an online English newspaper! :S

(please correct every mistake I make, I’m learning.)

    I’d say «ruder» is OK but «more rude» sounds better. :)

    Hi!

I’ve just seen «more rude» in a piece of news of an online English newspaper!

(please correct every mistake I make, I’m learning.)

The word «ruder» is just fine, and probably more frequently used. What sounds better will depend on context.

He is ruder than anyone I ever met. Normal

He is more rude than anyone I ever met. Correct but not as natural as the first.

He couldn’t be more rude. Normal.

He couldn’t be ruder. Normal, but the first version is a bit more natural.

    Correction as requested:

    in a news item in

    piece of news of

    an online English

Maybe my English grammar isn’t so good, but two of the corrections («because» instead of «’cause» and «news item» instead of «piece of news») made by others don’t seem necessary to me…

    P.S. I would probably say «more rude» more often than «ruder.» Saludos.

    Hi

As the OP is learning English, it is best to correct any words which are non-standard English (’cause).

«news item» instead of «piece of news») made by others don’t seem necessary to me…

While I don’t think «piece of news» by itself is grammatically incorrect, it is not as natural-sounding (particularly when coupled with «of an online English newspaper»), and most people learning a foreign language want to learn the phrasing most commonly used by native speakers.

I think it’s fair to say that «sir» has less chance of sounding sarcastic, but honestly I would recommend using neither. This is an interesting question and definitely made me think about where I see titles and formal pronouns being used.

    Mr. / Ms.
I used «Mr. [last name]» to address teachers and other adults in grade school, but very rarely outside of that context. I’ve been called ‘Ms. [last name]’ at the doctor’s office when it’s my turn to go in, and in letters from businesses.

    Sir / Ma’am
I might use «Sir» or «Ma’am» if I was trying to get a stranger’s attention because they’d dropped something. «Excuse me, sir? Sir? I think you dropped this.» I think «ma’am» gets used more in the Southern US, but I’m not sure.

    Lady
Lady is another formal term that has mostly lost its place in modern speech.
    Common uses:

    • addressing an audience as «Ladies and gentlemen»

    • referring to the women’s restroom as the «ladies’ room»
      Other uses:

    • Usually comes off as slightly condescending or creepy.
Demetri Martin has a good bit about it.

    Mister / Missy
As a standalone pronoun, this is the kind of thing you say to a young child as a cutesy version of addressing them as an adult. For example «Okay, Mister, it’s time to brush your teeth.» When used with an adult, it’s generally rude since it sounds like you’re addressing them as a child. This is similar to calling strangers by affectionate names like «Sweetheart,» «Darling,» «Pumpkin,» etc. For example, I was texting a guy and when I called him out for being rude, he said, «I said don’t be boring. Don’t get it twisted, Missy.»
