Hello, I would like to ask why the comparative and superlative of «remote» appears in many dictionaries as «remoter» and «remotest» instead of «more remote» and «most remote». Thanks.

And the question is: why «remoter» and «remotest» are correct?

As you already know, remote is a two-syllable word.

    Some

grammar experts say that «Comparatives and superlatives of two-syllable words can be formed by adding (1) –er and –est or (2) the word more or most. (more gorgeous, more quickly.» (Video Aided Instruction)

Other experts say that, in comparisons, base words of two syllables that end in -y add «-ier form,» «not more» [«more healthy»] are preferred:

Yogurt is a much healthier snack than potato chips.

Speaking as someone who has lived a long life in the U.S.A., both West and East coasts, I have never heard «remoter.» Sounds very odd to me. «remotest,» yes, but not used much. «more remote» and «most remote,» yes. But «remoter»? No. It might be correct grammatically, but I’ve never heard it used.

It might be correct grammatically, but I’ve never heard it used.

    Likewise . . . I did a double take when I saw it at merriam.com.

I wouldn’t say «This village is remoter (than that village)», but I might say «Once internet service became available in the remoter villages of the region, ….»

«Further» works, but «distanter» doesn’t. And if I think of «remote» as something other than a simple adjective (it was originally a Latin participle and is now also a noun), I am less likely to use «remoter».
