Is marley a word

Is there such a word as «marley» used as a common noun, and not as the now famous surname (Bob’s). In a previous thread, «marley» was mentioned as a possible word (Panj in «Tales of Glarney» thread), or maybe I did not understand what was meant here.

Thanks

Interesting question. I haven’t seen it used as common noun, although as soon as I saw it, I thought of marley in connection with dancing: marley dances, perhaps?

A marley is a small glass marble.
    Apparently it has an etymology.
    Wow!
Even better, it has it’s very own entry in the OED.
In parts of England marl is the diminutive of marble, hence marley by adding the -y diminutive suffix.

Marbles are marleys in the usual peripheral zones: Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

There is a local children’s song that goes on for ever:
Wee Jimmy’s lost his marley, X3
    ……………………
It fell out of his pocket, X3
    …………………….
It rolled down through the grating, X3
    etc etc

Marley is also pressed into service for the clinical diagnosis of the mentally disturbed and some forms of residential care.

A: Good morning, B, how’s about you this morning.
    B: About you too, A.
    A: How is your father.
A: My father has really lost his marleys, you know. He is away with it.
B: Oh dear, that is very sad.
A: Indeed it is. We have had to put him in a marley-losters home.
    B: …..

Thanks and this is very interesting — a word that sounds common in one part of Britain/Ireland, and is totally unknown elsewhere… In S England, I don’t think it is used at all. And the expression is of course «to lose one’s marbles».

The connection with dancing is not obvious to me — other than references to Bob Marley’s music etc., of course.

    • #5

marley also happens to be the word for a rubberized flooring laid down on a theater stage for dance performances. That sort of has to do with dancing. :) It’s more of a technical trade term than a noun in common usage though, and I’m afraid it almost certainly has nothing to do with «Tales of Glarney». If I had to guess at its etymology I would think it might be some sort of brand name.

OK, so there would be two meanings: (a) A common noun used in certain parts of the UK to mean «marbles» (regional use of the term); (b) A specialist term for a certain type of flooring as described by Kevman (US usage and, perhaps, originally, a brand-name).

All very interesting! And it is very much the kind of word you are

    not

going to find in the dictionary!

    Marley:

The name ‘Marley’ and the associated logo and trademark are used by various trading companies formerly within the samegroup, but which, as a result of a demerger in 2003, today belong to two completely independent groups:*Etex Group S.A.: Marley activities in roofing and cladding *Aliaxis S.A.: Marley activities in plumbing and drainage. Etex Group S.A. and Aliaxis S.A. are completely independent of each other in all aspects including legal, financial, managerial and operational.

And marley the marble is in the OED.

Names of companies are one thing, common nouns are another. What is of interest, in my view, is if and when the name of a company or product (covered by trademark legislation) becomes a common noun (eg to hoover from the maker of vacuum-cleaners).

I take your point that «marley» for «marbles» is in the OED, but it is not in your standard dictionary, i.e. for instance the Oxford Concise Dictionary.

I did a search on the internet and could not find any references to «marley» as a common noun, but maybe I carried out my little investigation too quickly…

So, it seems to me, outside the context it is used in (whether occupational or geographical…), it remains a relatively rare word.

    dead as a door-nail

    1) без каких-л. признаков жизни, бездыханный; погибший окончательно

Old Marley was as dead as a doornail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know of my own knowledge what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of iron-mongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile… You will therefore permit me to repeat emphatically that Marley was as dead as a door-nail. (Ch. Dickens, ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Stave I’) — Старый Марлей был мертв, как дверной гвоздь. Поймите, я не хочу сказать, что, по моим сведениям, дверной гвоздь является чем-то особенно мертвым. Я скорее склонен думать, что гвоздь из гроба является самым безжизненным из москательных товаров, но мудрость наших предков заключена в этом сравнении… Поэтому разрешите мне настойчиво повторить, что старый Марлей был мертв, как дверной гвоздь.

‘Here’s to his memory.’ ‘Ugh! what! is he — is he?’ ‘Dead as a herring.’ (Ch. Reade, ‘it Is Never Too Late to Mend’, ch. IX) — — Выпьем за покойника. — Да ну? Разве он..? — Мертвее не бывает.

Taylor: «You’d have had me dead as mutton if that gun had been loaded.» (W. S. Maugham, ‘The Land of Promise’, act III) — Тейлор: «Ты бы прикончила меня, как барана, если бы ружье было заряжено.»

    2) превратившийся в мёртвую букву, утративший силу; вышедший из употребления; отживший свой век

Mr. Crabbe was as dead as mutton, but Mr. Crabbe continued to write moral stories in rhymed couplets. (W. S. Maugham, ‘The Moon and Sixpence’, ch. II) — Мистер Крэбб безнадежно отстал от жизни, но мистер Крэбб все же продолжал писать нравоучительные истории рифмованными двустишиями.

Take my word for it… English society is as dead as the dodo. (W. S. Maugham, ‘The Razor’s Edge’, ch. III) — Поверьте мне… высший свет в Англии — это собрание ископаемых.

‘Besides, she’s still got a guilty conscience about it.’ ‘Oh, don’t be so silly,’ I said, ‘it’s all dead as Queen Anne.’ (P. H. Johnson, ‘An Impossible Marriage’, part IV, ch. VI) — — Каролину до сих пор мучит совесть. — Глупости, — сказала я, — все давно ушло в прошлое, как покойница королева Анна.

    Scrooge

Ebeneezer Scrooge — это герой рассказа Ч. Диккенса A Christmas Carol («Рождественская песнь»), чьи скаредность и бессердечие выглядят особенно вопиющими во время Рождества. В ночь перед Рождеством Скрудж увидел привидение своего умершего делового компаньона Marley, а затем его посетили три духа: the Ghost of Christmas Past («Дух Рождества Прошлых Лет»), the Ghost of Christmas Present («Дух Нынешнего Рождества») и the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come («Дух Будущего Рождества»). Эти духи позволили Скруджу увидеть своё детство и то, как его воспринимают в настоящее время, а также равнодушное отношение людей к его собственной смерти, которая уже не за горами. Эти видения подвигли его на щедрость в Рождество. Сейчас имя Scrooge стало нарицательным, так называют бездушного жадного человека.

There was so much mayhem at her son’s last birthday party that she decided he would not have one this year, a decision which caused her friends to brand her a real scrooge. — На последнем дне рождения её сына творилось такое, что она решила в этом году ничего не устраивать, из-за чего друзья стали обзывать её скрягой.

    10 QUOTES WITH «MARLEY»

Famous quotes and sentences with the word Marley.

Bob Marley is a huge influence. I love reggae music, but I also love the purpose of the songs he writes and the style of the music — it takes your worries away and makes you feel good, and I think that’s what music is about.

I’d love to work with Michael Buble, with Tony Bennett, with Damian Marley, with Andrea Bocelli.

Bob Marley performed the ‘One Love Peace’ concert in Jamaica with the two different warring political sides. There’s always been that in black music and culture in general. It’s no surprise because black music is such a reflection of what’s going on in black life. It’s not unusual for hip-hop.

I have always been a huge fan of reggae music. I remember going to see Bob Marley And The Wailers at the Hammersmith Odeon when I was 13. I went with my big sister, Cordelia, and it remains the most wonderful concert I’ve ever been to.

Bob Marley is one of the most recognized artists. He didn’t care to be defined. People wondered, ‘Is it reggae? Is it rock?’ But at the end of the day they were still playing his music and that’s what matters.

You’re not there to spread any particular- if you’re Bob Marley you’re there to spread a message, but very few people can do that effectively without shoving opinions down someone’s throat.

I don’t know how you can go your whole life and not listen once to Bob Marley — what’s the point?

Bob Marley stood for universal peace and love. He tried to break racial barriers.

That’s the best way to feed the human mind. That’s how Bob Marley did it. He never put it in your face. After you got the groove, you were just singing the hooks, because you thought it was cool.

I listen to every thing, all kinds of stuff. I’ve been obsessed with the Nas and Damian Marley record, ‘Distant Relatives.’ I feel like a lot of people haven’t heard it, and it’s amazing.
