It’s considered to be a mild swear here. The type where you’d not want a child saying it, but if you’re around an adult who says it, you’re not really going to be offended.

level 1

I’m a Canadian here, Alberta specifically, I believe it depends on your religious standing. My parents never thought of it as a swear word, but we were never a church going family. My Uncle is a devoted Christian however, and gets quite offended if you say «hell» or even something like «oh my god». This is just from my experience though.

level 2

What happens if you say it in school??

level 1

It’s considered a curse, but as my uncle says, “they say it in the bible all the time”

level 1

Fifty years ago, you couldn’t say «hell» on American television. I don’t just mean the swear; I’m talking about referring to the literal place (which is usually considered acceptable even among those who wouldn’t use it as a swear word). These days it’s common enough to show up in commercials, but it’s still considered a mild intensifier (permissive version: «heck») that you would be expected not to use around children or in formal or polite settings.

level 1

It’s in the same category as «sucks» or «damn». Is it a swear? no. Is it good for children to say? no (outside the context of religion).

level 2

Are sucks and damn words you don’t want a kid saying?????? Really????

level 1

Canada, and yes, at least when you’re a kid.

level 1

In America, it barely feels like a swear. I hear people saying it all the time without caring at all.

level 1

Kinda, but only really when you are a kid. It’s more of like a “bastard” type of word, not like fuck, cunt, shit, etc. curse.

level 1

It’s considered strong language. You would not stand for your children using it.

level 2

What words is it comparable to in offensiveness?

level 1

Kevin Wilson wrote a song called you cant say cunt in Canada

level 1

Considering that you guys use «cunt» as a friendly greeting, there’s clearly different standards at work.
