It is an uncommon use of «bleed/bled».

It is like poorly-dyed fabric. The colors are separate, but when washed, the colors «bleed into» each other. They overlap. They aren’t separate.

In this example: as you move along the road, the road gradually turns into forest. You were on the road. Now you are in the forest.

    entangledbank

    • #5

It’s an unusual use. We don’t think of roads as bleeding. An unmade path into the woods can gradually fade away, become less distinct. That could be described (in a literary way) as bleeding. I don’t mean it’s a common expression, I mean I would get that picture if Britt Bennett wrote that about a path. But a road — that’s harder to picture. Is it the same idea?

    • #6

The picture I have is of a surfaced public road deteriorating into an unsurfaced private track once you get beyond the houses. The word dwindled might work.

Beyond the village, the road dwindled to a rutted cart track with smaller tracks branching off into the fields.’

    (Elizabeth Chadwick via Google Books)

    velisarius

I can’t be sure, but I would suggest that it was a misprint for «the road led into the woods».

It isn’t an impossible use of «bled» but it seems unlikely to me. It suggests to me that the road didn’t continue into the woods, but spread out into several small pathways into the wood. «Led» seems to me to fit the context better.

This is an original metaphor, not an inherent meaning of the word bled.
Like others, I suppose the road got narrower, then got more grass on it, then became a track, then a footpath, and then disappeared. Even in some parts of densely populated Britain, this was not such an uncommon experience in the days before Google Maps.
