Indian word for cat

Yes, I agree, it’s hard to find this for IA languages, especially one that even includes my native language — Konkani.

Thanks for the pointing out the errors, I’ll get that fixed. I also noticed that it’s ‘Shauraseni’ and not ‘Shaurasheni’.

So, the Sharada Script was used for Kashmiri, but from what I know, it’s the Peso-Arabic Script written in Nastaliq (same like for Urdu) is the predominant script in the Valley. Kashmiri Pandits (Hindus), most of whom fled the Valley, use the Devanagari Script. Next time, I might have all three Scripts there!

I also debated using the Peso-Arabic for Sindhi alongside Devanagari. The former is used by Sindhis in Sindh in Pakistan, while the latter is used by Sindhis who immigrated into India after partition. Similarly, Konkani has many scripts, based on the where the diaspora live outside of Goa.

I couldn’t find anything that would indicate that the word in Dhivehi was not ultimately derived from Sanskrit word. The Insular Indic Languages of Dhivehi and Sinhala tend to show more divergence from the original Sanskrit word for even the words for numbers when compared to languages of the Indian Mainland. Anyway, I’m just an amateur who enjoys linguistics and etymology, so I can only speculate. But even in my dialect of Konkani (South Canara), when ड् (voiced retroflex stop) + ल (voiced dental lateral approximant) are joined, it’s replaced by ळ (voiced retroflex lateral flap). So the contraction of the Sanskrit words बिडालक (masc.) or बिडाला (fem.) could explain an intermediate form, बिळा. It’s complicated also by the fact that most Sanskrit dictionaries we have today are for Classical Sanskrit, and not Vedic Sanskrit. The former replaced ळ with ल in words, while the latter had plenty of words with ळ. The Maharashtri Prakrit noticeably retained the use of ळ when compared to languages derived from the other Prakrits. Anyway, my speculation is just a good as somebody else’s at this point.

Thanks again for spotting the errors!👍

What is Hindi and how did it evolve?

Literary Hindi was influenced by the ancient language of Sanskrit. Nowadays a classical language, Sanskrit was spoken during the Vedic age in India, from about 1500 to 500 BCE. Hindi is deeply influenced by this ancient language, often regarded as the mother of all languages. Hindi is written in the Devanagari script.

The standard form of Hindi is the dialect called Khari Boli found in northern and eastern Delhi. Another dialect of Hindi is Braj Bhasha, along with Awadhi, Bagheli, Bhojpuri, Bundeli, Haryanvi and Marwari.

Modern Hindi has evolved with the interaction of Khari Boli with northern influences. Hindi evolved as linguistic devices and media grew, and the language developed a rich lexicon and flexible syntactic devices.

The Hindi belt stretches from northern India to the state of Madhya Pradesh. The verbal inflection of Hindi is similar to other regional languages. While present and future indicative forms are completely conjugated, other tenses are indicated with the aid of perfective and imperfective participles in addition with the auxiliary verbs.

Description

The cat is a domestic species of small carnivorous mammal. It is the only domesticated species in the family Felidae and is commonly referred to as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from the wild members of the family. Cats are commonly kept as house pets but can also be farm cats or feral cats; the feral cat ranges freely and avoids human contact. Domestic cats are valued by humans for companionship and their ability to kill rodents. About 60 cat breeds are recognized by various cat registries.

Cats in different languages from around the world

In Japan, it’s the three colored calico that’s considered lucky. In Russia, it is good luck to let a cat be the first one to walk into a new house. In Chinese mythology, the cat was deceived by the Rat and has hated him ever since.

Tales of the Wampus cat are known throughout Native tribes of the Appalacians, but the Cherokee believe Wampus is the spirit of a woman who fought a demon to avenge her husband.

In Celtic legend, the Fair Folk sometimes took the form of cats and could do great mischief or bestow great blessings depending on how they were treated.

Europe

Cat In Different Languages From All Around The World 1

It’s in Europe where we find the best known fairy tales and folklore of cats. In Germany a cat is Katze and a kitten is Kätzchen. (Nouns in German always start with capital letters.) In his native Italy, Puss in Boots is called “Il gatto con gli stivali” and in French he’s just “Le Maître Chat” which means simply “The Master Cat”.

The Shrek movies portray the folk hero as Spanish, where he’d be called “El Gato con Botas” and in Portuguese as “O Gato de Botas“. They’re similar languages on the surface, but the sentence structure (among other things) is very different. The Italian word for kitten is gattina.

In Greece, the land of a thousand strays, a cat is gata and a kitten is gataki. In Swedish the word is katt an in Finnish the word is kissa. In Russia, cat names you! But seriously, “koshka” is a girl cat and “kot” is a boy cat.

Africa

In Hebrew, the cat is called chatul, though Yiddish speakers may be more familiar with the pet word ketschele or just kats. In Yiddish, a Katsnkop (“cat in the head”) is a forgetful person.

Asia

And now, let’s take a slow boat to China where the Mandarian word for cat is mao. Yes, this means Chairman Mao’s name was “Chairman Cat”. In Japan, a cat is called neko and a kitten is koneko. In Japanese anime, a girl with cat ears and other feline features is called a nekomimi.

In India, cats are considered bad luck in general and the word can be Anglicized as billee. The Korean word is goyang-i. In Vietnam the cat is called con mèo. In Malaysia the cat is called kucing. It’s hard to Anglicize the Thai word for cat, but it sounds like a very drawn out “Meow”.

Perhaps like the Ancient Egyptians, the Ancient Siamese thought their cats were trying to say their name.

And the Rest…

The only two continents left are Australia and Antarctica. A few researchers and fishermen brought their cats with them, but didn’t stay long.

One named Bridget climbed the flagpole since there were no trees. In Australia, cats are an invasive species with ferals damaging the environment.

The origin of the English word cat (Old English catt) and its counterparts in other Germanic languages (such as German Katze), descended from Proto-Germanic kattōn-, is controversial. It was thought traditionally to be a borrowing from Late Latin cattus (ca. 350 a.d., Palladius), from catta.
