Did quite a bit of searching, but did not find anything about this. If there is a thread please tell me a link.
I have an old version of Microsoft Word X for Mac (Word:mac) from around 2003 or so. It recently stopped letting me type! I can open documents, edit them from the pull down menus, but cannot type, copy-paste, etc. Same machine I’ve always used (Imac pre-IBM chip). Very strange. I have un-installed and re-installed twice. I have tried different keyboards with the same result. Previously I had some difficulties with the computer because of some bad SDRAM. I replaced the bad DIMM. I have enough memory to exceed what is listed in the system requirements for the program. Oh, and I can type in other programs like TextEdit, etc. Any ideas? thanks!

When you are editing text in overtype mode in a Word document, typing new characters replaces any existing characters to the right side of the insertion point.
Turn on overtype mode

Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, click Edit, and then in the Edit dialog box, select Replace existing text as you type (Overtype mode).
Note: To turn off overtype mode, clear the check box next to Replace existing text as you type (Overtype mode).

To enable typing in devanagari, I followed steps as advised on web. I can now type devanagari in mac mail and on the web but I can’t type in devanagari in my mac Word.

Do you find yourself writing the same text again and again? Maybe it’s a signature or sign off or you may have standard paragraphs of text that you need to use from time to time.
When working with several different clients, you will be looking for ways to speed things up. One of my favourite tools is AutoText.
AutoText stands for Automatic Text and that is exactly what it does. It automatically inserts prewritten and/or pre-formatted text into your document at a keystroke.
I worked with a lady who ran an estate agency and she had several paragraphs of text to choose from when building terms and conditions. Not every client needed exactly the same content, so she created a series of AutoText entries which could be added quickly and easily.
Type Text to become AutoText
- Type the paragraph of text or whatever you want to store as an AutoText entry.
- Select the text
- Click on the Insert Menu and choose AutoText – New
- Type a memorable name for your AutoText entry – make sure that it is longer than three letters.
That’s it your AutoText entry is now saved.
To use your new AutoText using the keyboard
Start to type the name of the AutoText Entry and you will see an AutoComplete tip on the document with instructions to press Enter to insert.
Press Enter and the text will appear!
Note: This is the fastest way to insert an AutoText entry.
Insert an AutoText entry using the menu
Place the cursor where you want the AutoText to appear.
Click Insert > AutoText > and then select your entry from the list.
Find the entry in the list 2) Click on Insert 3) see the preview
Delete an entry
If you need to delete an entry – follow the steps above and click Delete to remove it from the list.
Store your AutoText Entry
Word stores the AutoText entry in the Normal template, which makes it available in all documents. If you want to limit AutoText entries to particular documents, on the Insert menu, point to AutoText, click AutoText, and then select a different template on the Look in pop-up menu when you create the AutoText entry.
Can I store formatted text or shapes as AutoText Entries?
The answer is of course yes!
For example, if I want to re-use this table several times when writing a user guide, I can select the whole table, click on Insert > AutoText > New and name the entry. Then I can use the tool tip to add it.
Some examples:
- Sign off for different clients
- Name and Address details that you often type
- Standard paragraphs of text
- A table with a particular style applied
- The list goes on….

I hardly ever want to paste with formatting when copying into Word 2016 or Excel 2016 (seriously, who wants fonts when copying into a spreadsheet?). Is there a way to set the default paste to paste text only when I hit Cmd+V?

In a roundabout fashion yes, mostly…
In MS Office their version of «Paste as plain text» is called «Paste and Match Style and uses the macOS system defaults (OptionCommandShiftV) for paste as plain text for that function.
Now if you don’t want to have to do that four finger salute just to paste (essentially) plain text, you can change the menu shortcuts in any application via the Keyboard Preference pane.
- Click on System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts
- Click the + button and from the Application menu select (for example) Microsoft Word.
- Enter the menu title that you want to change. noting that the menu that you want to assign or reassign its keyboard shortcut must match exactly what the menu says down to the capitalization.
- Click in the Keyboard Shortcut field and tap the keyboard shortcut you want to assign to that menu option, then click Add
- Repeat for any other keyboard shortcuts you want to add/change in any other applications you want to change them for.
In this example I reassigned «Paste» to OptionCommandShift V. And «Paste and Match Formatting» to CommandV.
I didn’t do this for all applications as I don’t want to chance messing up the behavior of other applications that you can copy/paste with.
NOTE that this is not really «paste plain text» but will give you at least some of that functionality with very little pain.
To really get paste plain text in an MS Office application you would likely need something that could capture a regular paste command and then select the plain text icon from the formatting menu that pops up at the insertion point after you paste. There may be a macro program out there that can do that but I am unaware of any specific ones with that functionality.

For some versions of Word, I have v16.16.7 (whatever edition that is), I was able to use a version of the Tools > Customize Keyboard solution. Once there, select Edit on the left and PasteTextOnly on the right. Then, add whatever keyboard shortcut you want, e.g., command+V. I have not extensively road tested this but it seems to work. No idea if this can be extended elsewhere in Office.

Steve Chambers solution works for Word, but not for Excel, because there simply is no «Paste and Match Formatting» command in Excel. Only Paste or Paste Special. Thus for Excel, I believe the answer is no, unfortunately. But I’d love to proven otherwise.

Here is the definite solution for all versions:
- Select a cell and copy it.
- Go to Tools > Macros > record new macro.
- Specify a shortcut, for example option+command+b
- Click enter
- focus on any empty cell and click control+v, then select «paste and style formatting» in the options.
- Go to Tools > Macros > Stop Macro.
- Next, download and install BetterTouchTool.
- Go to Preferences > keyboard.
- Add new shortcut. Enter command+v in the shortcut field and enter option+command+b in the triggered shortcut field.
- Done.

I used the above answer as a reference and added my own solution:
Macro1:
Copy some formatted text.
Let the document cursor stay somewhere in the document.
Go to Tools > Macros > record new macro.
Specify a shortcut with option+command+shift+b (finish macro creation)
Press cmd+v
Select destination formatting
Go to Tools > Macros > Stop Macro.
Macro2:
Go to Tools > Macros > record new macro
Specify a shortcut with cmd+v (override the normal paste)
This time you press option+command+shift+b
Go to Tools > Macros > Stop Macro
Done.
Now each time you press cmd+v you will call a macro which calls another macro and your text will be formatted correctly. (This is a solution tested in word)

Here is a solution that works on Excel for Mac 16.42!
- Go to the
Tools>Customize Keyboard...menu. - Under
CategorieschooseCommands not in the Ribbon - In the
Searchbar underCommandstype «Match» and select the command namedMatch Destination Formatting. (I bet you would have searched for «Paste» instead and never found this command!) - Click in the input box that says
Press new keyboard shortcut: - Type the shortcut you want, in my case that is
Command+Vand make sure to clickAdd. Note: that it tells you this command is already assigned to «Paste». That’s fine, we will overwrite it. - You should see your keyboard command in the list of
Current keys:now. - Click
OK.
Note that the «Paste Values» command doesn’t work for values copied from outside of Excel for some reason. But «Match Destination Formatting» seems to do what I want.

I found that every option on here didn’t work for me, but you guys have helped me find a way.
I am using a Mac Pro with macOS 11.6 and Excel for Mac 16.54 with MS Office 365.
I managed to get plain text on CmdV in Excel by going to Tools > Customise Keyboard, then in the Categories:, select Commands Not in the Ribbon**. Then in the search box under Commands:, I typed in «Paste». I then selected Paste Values and then clicked in the box below «Press new keyboard shortcut» and pressed the CmdV keys. Then clicked Add and OK.
I can now paste just the values.

I upgraded to Office 2016 and I have to say Word is super slow when it comes to typing. Like it lags behind each word when I type. And, its worse when I type in a table. It’s driving me crazy. Is anyone else experiencing this? It’s the same for me on my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini. And, the slow typing on a table is also there on Word 2016 for iPad.

Mine is the same and it’s very annoying — all my work is report writing and it’s a nuisance….I type too fast for word / powerpoint and it’s just annoying the life out of me. I thought it was maybe just the beta version but got a new Macbook and got Office for Mac 2016 and it’s still the same.
In addition to this .. I have a problem where I’m typing in a table in Powerpoint and come to the end of the line — naturally powerpoint should just continue my sentence on the next line but it seems to be highlighting the whole cell text and then as I am typing faster, it is overriding the cell text .. I keep having to use undo and be careful when I come to the end of a line … also same thing happens when I press enter for a new para in powerpoint … highlights the whole cell text and overrides it … again I have to use the undo and work around it … I really hope this isn’t it .. they better have updates to fix these few things.
I’d love to use iWork or Keynote but unfortunately we have standard templates for our reports at work and most people operate from a windows machine so I have to go with Microsoft Office for now.

Same issue here — Word, in particular, is laggy on typing. And, Excel is awful on text rendering — this happens on both my MBAs.

Why not just stop obsessive and/or addicted use of M$ products? Apple Pages works, believe it or not. OK in Word there are millions of useless functions that hardly anybody ever uses, or use once in a curious test and then never again, but so what?

I have the same issue from time to time on my MBA. Word 2016 usually crashes on the first attempt to open it. Then, I get the random slow, laggy typing.
For those wondering why not just use Pages, Word has better spell/grammar check. I’ve copied countless papers that showed no issues in Pages into Word only to have Word point out a simple mistake. Word also has better citation tools than Pages out of the box.

Why not stick to Word 2011. Unless you are using collaboration, Word 2016 is just dumped down version compared to Word 2011. That is why I can’t check the typing speed here, because it was a step back and I removed it.

Hi, did you ever find a solution to this problem?
I started using Office 2016 recently on my MacBook Pro running Yosemite, and Word can sometimes be very very slow while typing. Luckily it seems to be limited to documents saved in the old .doc format, but it’s an annoyance nevertheless.

Same problem. You type, and seconds later the letters appear.
I found the problem only occurs if the document is saved in .docx format. If you save as Word 97–2004 Document (.doc) there is no typing delay. But then you’re limited to the older formatting and features of Word, which can be even more infuriating.
For those who say just use Apple Pages, I agree. And I have been for the last 4 years. Until now, I need the equation editor in Word to collaborate with my colleagues.

I found the problem only occurs if the document is saved in .docx format. If you save as Word 97–2004 Document (.doc) there is no typing delay
This is very strange: as I wrote in my previous post, my feeling is exactly the opposite!
On my MacBook the problem is more present in files where «Compatibility mode» is shown in the title bar, i.e. .doc files and .docx files saved with compatibility option active.
I can say, for sure, that in some cases I had the problem with a «compatibility mode» file, I saved it as standard .docx, and the problem disappeared.
But anyway based on my tests the issue is not limited to that.
I have some files with a not-basic layout, long tables etc., where typing is very slow even in docx format.
I also tried starting my Mac in safe/clean mode but the problem remained, so it’s not caused by background apps.
It’s true that draft mode speeds up typing quite a lot, but then we’re going back 20 years before real WYSIWYG was here… it’s not a solution.

I have the same problem, but it only happen to files that open in the «compatibility mode» (can be seen on the top bar, next to the file name). Then simply I convert the document (file > convert document), and the problem disappear.

Because they are forced to do so by work requirements? If you had read the posts before yours, you’d realize that. Some of them are not in liberty of doing what they want and are asking for help, your post is not helping them.

I have the same problem. It seems as though I type too fast for word to handle so there is a bit of a delay in the time the text appears on the screen, from several tests my typing speed appears to be 140wpm. It’s not a huge annoyance because I don’t do a lot of typing in the time being, but I can see it becoming one very soon when I get back to work. Are there any actual workarounds at the moment?

I have the exact same problem on my RMbP13. It’s not text smoothing, as sometimes it is fine and at others it is not.
I switched to 2016 because of the annoying disappearing footnotes saga with Word 2011, but Word 2016 is even more annoying with the delayed typing!
Hopefully MS put out a fix!

Yes have the same problem occurring somewhat randomly but most often with long documents (+50 pages). I would’n’t hold my breath waiting for Microsoft to fix it; Word 2016 has been out for a year and even updated to 64 bit, without any noticeable performance improvements. It is incredible that they cannot make a decent version of one of the most popular applications on the Mac and I have gone back to Word 2011. Word on Windows is just so much better even on very low spec hardware, but I like the Mac hardward and iPhone integration.

I think it might be that Microsoft records every keystroke now. I see the same thing in equivalence with the Windows version. Slow typing on screen. No reason for this except if the program is recording in my opinion. Read Microsoft’s user agreement. They will say what they do things like this too «improve» their products.. yeah sure.
