This book features sixteen familiar passages from both the Old and New Testaments. For each «chapter» an introductory section offers the actual Scripture, quoted in the New King James Version, along with a short devotional. This section also highlights a «big word» (and it’s definition) and an explanation of the featured phonetic tools, such as beginning consonants, beginning blends, short vowel sounds, silent letters, ending blends and combination sounds. The following pages provide an easy to read paraphrase with each of these phonetic devices bold-faced and red.
What I Like: It’s easy to use. The «note to parents» at the beginning is great. The whole book utilizes large and clear print, perfect for early readers. I like the short devotionals, too. They draw excellent applications from the Scriptures given.
What I Dislike: From a biblical perspective: The first two chapters focus on getting what you ask for (Psalm 37:3-4 and Matthew 7:7-8). I felt this emphasized a prosperity gospel and a general self-centeredness. The author does a nice job being specific about the intent of these verses. Still, I can think of many other more important verses to start the book.
From a teacher’s perspective: The book says it’s for Level 1 readers, but it’s definitely not for first-time readers. The phonetic lessons show no progression. I recommend it for early readers who already have a good foundation and need a tool for review and to put it all together.
Overall Rating: Good.

God is great

Reviewed by Grace Schaefer (age 7) for Reader Views (11/08) «I Can Read God’s Word» is all about God. It’s a long book of many different stories based on different scriptures. It is very easy to read. I read it very quickly. Each story begins with a helping page. On this page there is the scripture, the `Big Word,’ sounds and blends from the story. Next is the story with lots of cool pictures. The pictures are colorful, fun and funny! I felt happy and great because I read about God. I know He would want me to read this. I think other kids will feel good, too, after reading this book. I think the author wrote this book so kids would learn about God. Parent note: I love how «I Can Read God’s Word» by Phil A. Smouse is set up. Grace read it without me. I wish we had gone through it together so we could have made better use of the helping page. I will do that with my 4-year-old.

«Excellent Bible Stories For Preschoolers and 1st and 2nd graders» 5 stars Different child-friendly bible passages fill this fun book. Joy in God, lost lambs, security with God, and being good are topics that are explained through bible stories. Each passage flows into another one. The illustrations are bright, round, and with a lot of expression. The illustrations are perfect for the target age group. Each story is upbeat, simple, and age appropriate. The words are in large font, and there are few words on each page. This keeps the children’s attention. 1st and 2nd graders will find the words to be easy to sound out, but challenging. Parish grabs this book for me to read to her every day. I point out some of the easier words for her to read to me. She likes the fact that the book is fast-moving. She enjoys books with few words on each page. Isaac has not shown much interest in this book, yet. However, I will keep it for him. I have no doubt that he will love this book in a couple of years.
