    Taking notes in Microsoft Word usually requires only the skill of typing words using the letters on the keyboard. Making music notes, on the other hand, also requires typing keys, but in distinctly specific ways. Word may not be the ultimate choice for rendering high-level music documents such as symphonies, but through some fancy fingerwork, you can make sweet music right on the page. Word offers the potential to type several hidden symbols, which can make your readers take serious note of your work.

    Step 1

    Open Microsoft Word. To add music note symbols to an existing document, click the “File” tab and browse to the file.

    Move the cursor to where you want to add the first symbol and click the document.

    Step 3

    Type the number “266a,” press the “Alt” key and then type an “X” to form a quaver. Do not use any spaces or quotation marks.

    Step 4

    Type “266b,” press the “Alt” key and press “X” to form beamed quavers.

    Step 5

    Type “266c,” press the “Alt” key and press “X” to form beamed semi quavers.

    Step 6

    Type “266d,” press the “Alt” key and press “X” to form a flat note.

    Step 7

    Type “266e,” press the “Alt” key and press “X” to form the natural note.

    Type “266f,” press the “Alt” key and press “X” to form the sharp note.

    • Word uses the number “266″ at the beginning of the code for the majority of its basic music symbols.
    • Word’s clip art collection can also help you out, graphically, with some of your music note needs, but take care when searching for certain terms. Find the clip art by clicking the “Insert” menu and then clicking the “Clip Art” button. Searching for the term “clef,” for example, will reveal a bounty of music symbols, but searching for “note” brings up the beamed quavers as the very first option, followed by a slew of non-music related images such as post-it notes and people in meetings taking notes.
