Start small by scanning the words for prefixes and suffixes and then writing letters in different combinations. If you get stuck, you can enlist the help of a friend or use an online tool. With a little work and strategy, you can develop great word game skills.
-
1
Pair letters that appear together frequently. Scan the letters for letters that frequently appear together in words. Look for pairs like «ch,» «sh,» «qu», and «ph.» Jot these combinations down on a piece of scrap paper. They may be a key part of the final word.[1]
-
2
Find prefixes and suffixes. Look for common prefixes and suffixes in your words. Common prefixes include things like «un-,» «non-,» «bi-,» «co-,» and so on. Common suffixes include things like «-ed», «-ing,» «-er,» and «-ate.» [2]
- Write out a number of prefixes and suffixes and play around with them while experimenting with different word combinations. Prefixes or suffixes may belong to a specific word or sentence.
- For example, if you have the letters d, u, e, n, n, c, i, h, and a, notice the prefix «un.» You can spell the word «unchained.»

Look for one, two, or three letter words. Some word scrambles form sentences instead of a single word, so pick out any small words you can. You may find single letter words, like «a» or «I,» as well as words like «to,» «the,» «at», and so on. Make a list of any short word you find that you may potentially use later.
- Almost every sentence contains «the» at some point. If you’re unscrambling a sentence, and you see a «t,» «h,» and «e,» there’s a good chance this will end up spelling «the.»

1
Look at consonants and vowels separately. Make a list of all the consonants and then make a list of all the vowels. Experiment by placing consonants in front of different nouns to see if anything looks familiar. Also, be on the lookout for any common noun combinations such as «ou» and «ie.»[3]
- For example, you may have the letters g, p, n, o, i, u, d, and n. If you separate the nouns (o, i, and u) you’ll noticed the common pair «ou.» You can slowly build around this to make the word «pounding.»
-
2
Use tiles from board games to help you visualize. If you have a game like Bananagrams or Scrabble, break out the tiles when you’re trying to solve a word scramble. It’s easier to visualize potential words when you can freely use tiles to make different combinations.[4]
-
3
Write letters in many different combinations. If you’re stumped, just start making as many combinations as you can. Pair letters together randomly in pairs of two, three, or even four until something looks familiar.
-
4
Construct words around vowels. It can help to start with a familiar vowel combination and see if you can construct words around that. Write out something like «ou» and see if any of the existing letters can frame a word around that.[5]
- For example, you have the letters me n, n, n, n, u, o, c, t, a, e, and e. Pair «ou» together and try adding random letters before and after it. You’ll find you can make the word «noun,» which falls in the middle of the word «announcement.»

Remember «s» can come at the end of a word. If you have an «s» in your word scramble, it’s easy to get stumped as you may forget it can come at the end of a word to make it plural. If you’re not having any luck solving a problem, experiment by placing the «s» at the end of the word.[6]
- Look at the letters v, a, e, w, s. You may recognize the «ve» pattern and spell something like «save.» However, the «s» falls at the end of the word here, spelling, «waves.»
-
2
Ask a friend for help. If you have a friend with a big vocabulary who loves word puzzles, enlist their help. Some word scrambles are extremely confusing. Having a friend assist you may help you solve them.
-
3
Use an online tool. If you absolutely can’t find the solution, there are many tools online that you can use to unscramble words. Simply do an online search for «word scramble solvers» and punch the words into an online tool.[7]

How to Solve a Scramble
There is not a specific way to solve a scramble, but there are some general tips that can help. One thing to keep in mind is that often, the easiest way to solve a scramble is to go back to basics and build from there. Start by looking at the colors and shapes of the pieces, and try to find a basic pattern. If you can’t find a pattern, try grouping the pieces into smaller sets and looking for patterns within those sets. If all else fails, start by building a basic tower or wall out of the pieces. As you become more experienced with solving scrambles, you’ll develop your own strategies and techniques that work best for you. You can also visit word unscrambler to easily solve a Scramble.
Method 1: Rearranging the Letters
When faced with a scrambled word, the first step is to try and rearrange the letters into something that makes sense. Often, this can be done by looking for words that are similar in spelling and sound. For example, the word “cape” can be rearranged to spell “peace”.
Another strategy is to look for prefixes and suffixes. The word “scramble” can be turned into “unscramble” by adding the prefix “un-” to the beginning. There are also many online tools that can help you unscramble a word, such as unscramble.net.
Method 2: Using clues from the sentence context.
If you are still stuck after trying to rearrange the letters, another strategy is to use clues from the sentence context. If you see the letter E, for instance, it might be a good clue to try the word “Ester,” or the phrase “hotter than the sun.
Method 3: Finding the right word bank
Method 3 is finding the right word bank. The right word bank is a list of words that can be made using the letters in the scramble. The right word bank will have more words than the letter bank and it will also have words that are not in the letter bank.
The best way to find the right word bank is to use a dictionary or a thesaurus. A dictionary will give you a list of words that can be made with the letters in the scramble. A thesaurus will give you synonyms (words with similar meanings) for each of the words in the scramble.
It is important to choose a good dictionary or a good thesaurus.

The scrambled word game that’s printed in newspapers all around the world, has been in existence for ages. It’s as popular as the crosswords throughout the world. The game is probably as old as words themselves. It can be a nice party game. Since time immemorial, people have enjoyed playing with words and playing word games like these.
People who are already good at unscrambling words will probably say that there’s nothing here to be taught! There is partial truth in that statement. Nothing can really be taught, but it can be learned! Learning through experience is the only way to move forward in anything. As you approach something completely unknown, at first you go by a trial and error method to solve it. At the start you rarely have any success. Persistence is the key. Through your mistakes, you learn and modify your method. Slowly, as you go on rectifying your mistakes and think more creatively, you start having fun!
All I plan to achieve through this Plentifun article is show some of my own approaches to unscrambling words. They work for me and may work for you too. Still, they’ll certainly put you on the track to find your own technique. The only thing to learn really in life is how to think on your own! Unscrambling words is a game. Every game has tips and tricks which can get you ahead in its play, but to become a ‘master unscrambler’, you have to do more than that! Without further ado, let’s get down to brass tacks and see how words can be easily unscrambled.
Tips on Unscrambling Words
Here are some tips on unscrambling words for beginners of the game, who are eager to get better at it. Unscrambling words is all about looking for word patterns that make sense.
Tip 1: Improve your Vocabulary and Word Store!
The ‘Scramblers’ who design the scramble game, may scramble any words that exist in the English language. It’s not possible to know every word in the Webster’s English dictionary, but enhancing your word bank certainly helps. Personally, I enjoy reading a dictionary. Other than making you better at unscrambling, knowing more words also helps you to be very specific about what you are saying.
A dictionary is a necessary tool for unscrambling words! Sometimes, you may try out various permutations and combinations and form a word, which may leave you in doubt whether it is a word! That is when the dictionary comes in handy. I have found new words this way, which I never even knew existed. So unscrambling words is not only fun, it helps you in learning new words too.
Now, how do you take advantage of your word store? Firstly, look at the scrambled words. Don’t just look, but observe. Take in the pattern. Your brain will automatically start scanning your word store when it sees the scrambled words. Look for repetitions of certain letters and the combinations of letters. That itself narrows down the possibilities for you.
Tip 2: Know the Anatomy of Words!
You need to have an understanding of the ‘anatomy of words’, if you get what I am saying. By that, I mean, you must understand the structure of words. No word can be complete without a vowel (‘a,e,i,o,u’). There are a very few exceptions to the fact, and of course you will definitely recognize a word without a vowel, very easily. So in the scrambled word, put the vowels in between. Vowels gel consonants together. Remember that!
Keep rearranging the letters in the word, starting with different consonants and look for patterns! Any type of problem solving is nothing, but looking for patterns that fit. Our brain is a neural network that learns and remembers patterns. It is all about using your brain power. All our understanding, memory or whatever you may call it, is a pattern of interconnected patterns. To recognize or understand something, you have to make the connection of that new thing with your preformed patterns. The patterns have linkages of different kinds, audio-visual, verbal etc. When you understand something or recognize a new word, you have connected a pattern together.
Tip 3: Keep Scrambling till it’s Unscrambled!
The last tip is, keep scrambling the letters till they make sense. That is, persistently try newer combinations of letters, systematically. Sometimes, that’s what you have to do when, the word turns out to be something almost beyond your intuitive reasoning. After all intuition is also an acquired habit created through persistence.
Tip 4: Brute Force
If in spite of rearranging some of the words, you find it hard to guess what it’s exactly, there is the ‘Brute Force‘ method you can try out. Take a piece of paper and systematically write down all the possible word permutations that can occur through rearrangement of the letters. Refer a dictionary and see if any of the words created actually exist. Work through and check all the combinations. One of them is bound to be the right one.
The only way of getting better at unscrambling words, is to practice doing the same. Try unscrambling these scrambled words. Here is a ten word ‘Scramble Challenge’.

- SUBTLE / BUSTLE
- SERENE
- CLAIRVOYANT
- DECEIT
