How to read consonants?
A large number of consonants in English sounds practically do not differ from the pronunciation of consonants in Russian sounds, but there is a difference.

We have all been convinced more than once that there are many oddities and incomprehensibility in English that can bring a lot of headaches to English learners. What was the most difficult for you? Grammar? A huge number of words and synonyms for these words? Pronunciation? At school, the most difficult thing seemed to me to spell words, the so-called Spelling. Why do we write many letters and pronounce fewer sounds?
In Russian, as a rule, everything is logical: there is the word «beautiful», say all the written letters, and it will be correct. In English, problems begin when you realize that the rules of the Russian language do not work here. A simple example: beautiful / ˈbjuːtəfl / — 9 letters and 6 sounds (ju is one sound).
I often wondered: why do we need silent letters in English? What is the point in them if we do not pronounce them? Are there any rules that might explain the use of silent letters? Let’s look for answers in the article.
The history of unpronounceable letters
If we look at English words from the point of view of history, we will see that earlier about 90% of words in English were phonemic (phonemic). That is, the words were pronounced the way they are written. Imagine there was a knight (knight), and the word was pronounced as / knight / (/ knight /, may the English teachers forgive me for writing the transcription in Russian letters).
Then there were almost no words with unpronounceable letters, but somewhere in the XNUMXth century, the trend began to change. During this period, English began to borrow many words from other languages (French and Latin). Then there was a habit of «altering» the original English words in a new manner.

It turns out that 60% of words in English contain unpronounceable letters. This is why it is very important to learn to recognize when a letter is pronounced and when not. These subtleties can confuse us, for example, when we look up a word in a dictionary. Let’s take the word knowledge. If I do not know how it is written, but I am guided only by the initial sound, then I will look for this word in the section for the letter N and, of course, I will not find anything like it.
How to work with words with unpronounceable letters
There are many rules for silent letters, some of which I will explain in this article. In one sitting, remembering all the cases with silent letters, I think, will be impossible. Therefore, banal practice is needed. The more words you come across orally and in writing, the faster you will be able to establish for yourself a certain pattern of spelling words. For example, if you are already familiar with the word could, then would no longer seem so strange.
The second method, which will help to remember the spelling and pronunciation of words, is suitable for real lovers of the English language: delve into the etymology (origin) of the word. Try to find the history of the word: where it was borrowed from, what it meant before, how it was pronounced.
You will not only remember the spelling of the new word well, but you will also learn a lot of interesting things about the history of the origin of the concept. For example, island has an unpronounceable s. Until the XNUMXth century, this word was pronounced / ˈaɪlənd /, as it is now, but it was spelled differently — aeland.

Why silent letters are needed

Rules for reading consonants
The English alphabet has 20 consonant letters. Some of them are deaf and voiced pairs. At the same time, unlike Russian, they do not soften here and always sound solid.
The consonants c, g, s, and x have two different readings depending on which letter they are next to. For clarity, we present a table.
As we can see, the reading of consonants is influenced by the letters a, i, o, y, e, as well as consonants and stressed sounds.
There are also a number of rules that indicate how certain consonants are read correctly in different combinations. Let’s turn to another table, and then we will analyze it in more detail using examples.
If there are consonants sh next to them, then we read them as «sh»: sheep (sheep), bookshelf (bookshelf). At the same time, it is important that this combination is pronounced exactly like that, regardless of the place occupied in the word.
The combination ch gives us the sound «h», which is also always preserved, and the position in the word is not important: chain (chain) or March (March).

Compare the pronunciation of the combination of kn and ng: in the first case, we read it as «n» (knight — knight), in the second this sound is nasal (thing — thing). This rule is true for finding kn at the beginning of a word and ng at the end.
The same nasal «n» sounds in the combination nk regardless of the place in the word: bank — bank.
There are also two combinations that, although they consist of two letters, are read as one: ph (read as «f» — phone (phone)) and wr (p — wrong). Note that wr is only pronounced like this at the beginning of a word.
Separately, it should be said about the combination with the English letters a, u, o and i. These rules for reading English are clearly demonstrated in the following table.

You should not, also, strongly clamp the tongue with your teeth, remember that air must pass between the teeth and the tongue.

Many adult learners of a foreign language think that working with the alphabet and studying it thoroughly is an activity for children that should not be spent too much time. Of course, this position is erroneous, because there are often cases when in an English-speaking country they are asked to dictate their data by letter (for example, a name).
“Please, spell your name” — a native speaker will tell you and you will immediately understand how important it is to master the correct pronunciation of the letters of the alphabet.

First of all, consider sounds such as [d], [t], [n], [r], [s], [z]. Pronounce them and memorize the movements and trajectory of the tip of your tongue. With the «Russian» pronunciation, he will rest against his teeth — this is not what we need. The British, on the other hand, fix the tip of the tongue on the so-called alveolus — this is the name of the tubercle in the upper palate. Four types of vowel reading in English
The basis of correct pronunciation of English syllables is an understanding of what they are and what types of reading you need to know for the best knowledge of the language. In order to understand how to pronounce a particular vowel, you need to consider four types of syllables in English:
- Openending in a vowel. Here we read vowel sounds as they are read alphabetically (again, the benefit of knowing it cannot be overemphasized): safe — [seif], cube — [kjuːb].
- Closed with a consonant at the end. In this case, you need to learn each vowel separately:
- an open and not long sound [æ] is conveyed by the letter a in a closed syllable. In order to check if you pronounce it correctly, sit down at the table and straighten up, and let your hand stand with your elbow on the surface and with a hand bent under the chin — there will be space between them (provided that the back is straightened). It is necessary to lower the jaw so that it reaches the hand, while uttering the sound [e]. For example, the word bag is [bæg];
- the first sound is often confused with [e], but it is pronounced differently: lifting the corners of the lips in a slight smile. The sound is completely different, and, of course, not at all similar to Russian [e]: pet — [pet];
- such a group of sounds as [i], [ɔ], [ʌ], [u] is not pronounced in a chant. On the contrary, they are short, clear and intense: gig — [gig], fox — [fɔks], gus — [gʌs], book — [bʊk].
- Vowel + r… The consonant r is not readable, but simply lengthens the vowel in front of it: far — [fɑː], curl — [kɜːl].
- Vowel + re… The same thing: we do not pronounce r: dare — [deə], pure — [pjʊə].
Particular attention should be paid to the sounds [a:] and [ɔ:] — their pronunciation remind you of a doctor’s appointment when your tongue is pressed with a stick and asked to pronounce a lingering “A”. This is exactly how these sounds should be pronounced — pressing the tongue down: car — [ka:], sort — [sɔ: t] and so on.
When pronouncing syllables, do not forget how to put the stress correctly. Most often, the very first syllable is stressed — so if in doubt, put the stress there. Exceptions should be memorized gradually.
Important features of the language
There are four simple points that every foreign language learner must know. First, forget about soft consonants in English. Secondly, do not deafen the voiced vowels that appear at the end of a word.
Thirdly, remember that vowels can be both long and short — the first in the transcription will be indicated with the [:] sign.
And one last thing on articulation: try to get rid of too abrupt lip movements and movements in abundance in general — this is not in English.

C fscanf Function
The fscanf() function is available in the C library. This function is used to read formatted input from a stream. The syntax of the fscanf function is:

Parameters :
- stream − This is the pointer to a FILE object that identifies the stream.
- format − This is the C string that contains one or more of the following items − Whitespace character, Non-whitespace character, and Format specifiers.
- A format specifier will be as [=%[*][width][modifiers]type=].
1. Read File Word by Word in C using fscanf Function
Here we are making use of the fscanf function to read the text file. The first thing we are going to do is open the file in reading mode. So using fopen() function and “r” read mode we opened the file. The next step is to find the file stats like what is the size of the data this file contains. so we can allocate exact memory for the buffer that is going to hold the content of this file. We are using the stat() function to find the file size.
- Once we have the size and buffer allocated for this size, we start reading the file by using the fscanf() function.
- We keep reading the file word by word until we reach the end of file.In fscanf function, we are passing “%39[^-n] as the argument so we can read the text until we find the next word.
- The code will look like this:

Reading a Sentence in C
Problem Statement#3: Write a C program to read sentences as input from the user.
Method 1-
- scanf() doesn’t store the white space character in a string variable.
- It only reads characters other than white spaces and stores them in the specified character array until it encounters a white-space character.

scanf(“%[^n]s”, sen) means to read a string including spaces until the next line is received or to read string until line break i.e. n is encountered and store it on an array named “sen”.
- Here, %[ ] is the scanset specifier.
- scanf will process only those characters which are part of scanset.
- If the first character of the scanset is ‘^’, then the specifier will stop reading after the first occurrence of that character.
- ^n stands for taking input until a newline isn’t encountered.

Method 2- Using fgets
Note- gets() never checks the maximum limit of input characters. Hence they may cause undefined behavior and probably lead to buffer overflow error which eventually causes the program to crash. Hence, it is advisable not to use the gets function to read strings. To overcome the above limitation, fgets can be used.

Like the title says, im trying to write a program that can read individual words from a text file and store them to String
variables. I know how to use a FileReader
or FileInputStream
to read a single char
but for what I’m trying to this wont work. Once I input the words I am trying to compare these with other String variables in my program using .equals so it would be best if I can import as Strings. I am also okay with inputting an entire line from a text file as a String in which case Ill just put one word on each line of my file. How do I input words from a text file and store them to String variables?

Okay, that duplicate sort of helps. It might work for me but the reason my question is a little different is because the duplicate only tells how to read a single line. Im trying to read the individual words in the line. So basically splitting the line String.

In this post we’ll talk about how to use R to read and create word files. We’ll primarily be using R’s officer package. For reading data from Word Documents with Python, click here.
Creating Word reports with the officer package
The first thing we need to do is to install the officer package.

We’ll also be using the dplyr package, so you’ll need to install that the same way if you don’t have it already. Next, let’s load each of these packages.

Now, we’ll get started creating a report! First, we will use the read_docx function to create an empty Word file.

Adding paragraphs
Next, let’s add a few sample paragraphs. We can do that using the body_add_par function like below. The syntax is similar to that of the tidyverse.

To modify existing Word Documents, all we need to change is to input the filename into read_docx. Then, we can continue modifying our Word Document object like we were previously.

How to read Word Documents with R
What if we want to read in the Word Document we just created? We can do that using the same read_docx function like we did above to modify an existing file. Secondly, we use the docx_summary with this object to get the content within the file.

docx_summary returns a dataframe with the content in the Word file, as can be seen above. For example, to get the text in the paragraph of the document, we just need to filter the content_type field on “paragraph”, like below:

Extracting tables from Word Documents
Now, let’s extract the table from our document. We can do this similarly to the above in that we just need to filter content_type for “table cell”:

As you can see, the table’s columns are stacked in a single column. We need to do a little transformation to get this result into the needed format.

Now, we can add a table to our document using the body_add_table function. Before we do that, we just need to have a data frame ready, so we’ll create a sample one like below.

Adding images to the document
We can also add images to our Word Document. This is done by creating a temp file with an R plot and then adding the image to our document object. Though we’re using base R for plotting here, ggplot could also be used.

Lastly, we can save our Word Document using print.

How to modify existing Word Documents
To modify existing Word Documents, all we need to change is to input the filename into read_docx. Then, we can continue modifying our Word Document object like we were previously.
sample_doc <- read_docx("sample_file.docx") # add another paragraph sample_doc <- sample_doc %>% body_add_par("This is another paragraph")
What if we want to read in the Word Document we just created? We can do that using the same read_docx function like we did above to modify an existing file. Secondly, we use the docx_summary with this object to get the content within the file.
sample_data <- read_docx("sample_file.docx") content <- docx_summary(sample_data)
docx_summary returns a dataframe with the content in the Word file, as can be seen above. For example, to get the text in the paragraph of the document, we just need to filter the content_type field on “paragraph”, like below:
paragraphs <- content %>% filter(content_type == "paragraph") paragraphs$text
Extracting tables from Word Documents
Now, let’s extract the table from our document. We can do this similarly to the above in that we just need to filter content_type for “table cell”:
content %>% filter(content_type == "table cell")
As you can see, the table’s columns are stacked in a single column. We need to do a little transformation to get this result into the needed format.

The MS Word utility from Microsoft Office suite is one of the most commonly used tools for writing text documents, both simple and complex. Though humans can easily read and write MS Word documents, assuming you have the Office software installed, often times you need to read text from Word documents within another application.
For instance, if you are developing a natural language processing application in Python that takes MS Word files as input, you will need to read MS Word files in Python before you can process the text. Similarly, often times you need to write text to MS Word documents as output, which could be a dynamically generated report to download, for example.
In this article, article you will see how to read and write MS Word files in Python.
Installing Python-Docx Library
Several libraries exist that can be used to read and write MS Word files in Python. However, we will be using the python-docx module owing to its ease-of-use. Execute the following pip
command in your terminal to download the python-docx
module as shown below:
$ pip install python-docx
Reading MS Word Files with Python-Docx Module
In this section, you will see how to read text from MS Word files via the python-docx
module.
Create a new MS Word file and rename it as «my_word_file.docx». I saved the file in the root of my «E» directory, although you can save the file anywhere you want. The my_word_file.docx file should have the following content:
To read the above file, first import the docx
module and then create an object of the Document
class from the docx
module. Pass the path of the my_word_file.docx to the constructor of the Document
class, as shown in the following script:

doc = docx.Document("E:/my_word_file.docx")
The Document
class object doc
can now be used to read the content of the my_word_file.docx.
Reading Paragraphs
Once you create an object of the Document
class using the file path, you can access all the paragraphs in the document via the paragraphs
attribute. An empty line is also read as a paragraph by the Document
. Let’s fetch all the paragraphs from the my_word_file.docx and then display the total number of paragraphs in the document:
all_paras = doc.paragraphs
len(all_paras)

Now we’ll iteratively print all the paragraphs in the my_word_file.docx file:

Reading Runs
A run in a word document is a continuous sequence of words having similar properties, such as similar font sizes, font shapes, and font styles. For example, if you look at the second line of the my_word_file.docx, it contains the text «Welcome to stackabuse.com», here the text «Welcome to» is in plain font, while the text «stackabuse.com» is in bold face. Hence, the text «Welcome to» is considered as one run, while the bold faced text «stackabuse.com» is considered as another run.

Similarly, «Learn to program and write code in the» and «most efficient manner» are treated as two different runs in the paragraph «Learn to program and write code in the most efficient manner».
To get all the runs in a paragraph, you can use the run
property of the paragraph
attribute of the doc

Let’s read all the runs from paragraph number 5 (4th index) in our text:

Writing MS Word Files with Python-Docx Module
In the previous section, you saw how to read MS Word files in Python using the python-docx
module. In this section, you will see how to write MS Word files via the python-docx
module.
To write MS Word files, you have to create an object of the Document
class with an empty constructor, or without passing a file name.
mydoc = docx.Document()
Writing Paragraphs
To write paragraphs, you can use the add_paragraph()
method of the Document
class object. Once you have added a paragraph, you will need to call the save()
method on the Document
class object. The path of the file to which you want to write your paragraph is passed as a parameter to the save()
method. If the file doesn’t already exist, a new file will be created, otherwise the paragraph will be appended at the end of the existing MS Word file.
The following script writes a simple paragraph to a newly created MS Word file named «my_written_file.docx».
mydoc.add_paragraph("This is first paragraph of a MS Word file.")
mydoc.save("E:/my_written_file.docx")
Once you execute the above script, you should see a new file «my_written_file.docx» in the directory that you specified in the save()
method. Inside the file, you should see one paragraph which reads «This is first paragraph of a MS Word file.»
Let’s add another paragraph to the my_written_file.docx:
mydoc.add_paragraph("This is the second paragraph of a MS Word file.")
mydoc.save("E:/my_written_file.docx")
This second paragraph will be appended at the end of the existing content in my_written_file.docx.
Writing Runs
You can also write runs using the python-docx
module. To write runs, you first have to create a handle for the paragraph to which you want to add your run. Take a look at the following example to see how it’s done:
third_para = mydoc.add_paragraph("This is the third paragraph.")
third_para.add_run(" this is a section at the end of third paragraph")
mydoc.save("E:/my_written_file.docx")
In the script above we write a paragraph using the add_paragraph()
method of the Document
class object mydoc
. The add_paragraph()
method returns a handle for the newly added paragraph. To add a run to the new paragraph, you need to call the add_run()
method on the paragraph handle. The text for the run is passed in the form of a string to the add_run()
method. Finally, you need to call the save()
method to create the actual file.
You can also add headers to MS Word files. To do so, you need to call the add_heading()
method. The first parameter to the add_heading()
method is the text string for header, and the second parameter is the header size. The header sizes start from 0, with 0 being the top level header.
The following script adds three headers of level 0, 1, and 2 to the file my_written_file.docx:
mydoc.add_heading("This is level 1 heading", 0)
mydoc.add_heading("This is level 2 heading", 1)
mydoc.add_heading("This is level 3 heading", 2)
mydoc.save("E:/my_written_file.docx")
Adding Images
To add images to MS Word files, you can use the add_picture()
method. The path to the image is passed as a parameter to the add_picture()
method. You can also specify the width and height of the image using the docx.shared.Inches()
attribute. The following script adds an image from the local file system to the my_written_file.docx Word file. The width and height of the image will be 5 and 7 inches, respectively:
mydoc.add_picture("E:/eiffel-tower.jpg", width=docx.shared.Inches(5), height=docx.shared.Inches(7))
mydoc.save("E:/my_written_file.docx")
