In this Part 2 how to tutorial on Drawing Football Plays in PowerPoint to Create Youth Football Playbook with a close to free football play designer app like Powerpoint, Coach Parker uses the free hand draw tools menu to draw football plays and update a youth football playbook template. He also draw up a play using blank football diagram sheets in MSPP. The overall goal of this video series and project is to create a blank football playbook powerpoint template that is free.

Powerpoint also has some interesting play simulation software built in. You can see some of my earlier defensive videos where players are moving. But using this animation tool is a different video in this series on how to create a PowerPoint playbook. In this video we will stay focused on drawing football plays in PowerPoint with the freehand tools.

In the past, I have set up football playbook templates in Word, Visio, Playmake Pro and Excel, but I prefer setting up a football PowerPoint presentation style youth football playbook. It is so easy to draw in PowerPoint and also move around the slides in the organization tool. Most of my youth football playbooks are done in MS PowerPoint and tuned into Adobe pdf files. All of them are drawn in PowerPoint. I think it is the best football play design software, well for me it is the best and easiest software app for drawing football plays in PowerPoint.

When I start using PowerPoint to draw a youth football playbook I will start out by setting up football formation PowerPoint templates. The same is true for a playbook template Google Slides. So, I would say in most cases set up diagram templates first to establish your blank football playbook template. These templates will make it easier to cut, copy, paste, adjust, insert etc in the future. You will not need to recreate the plays but just adjust the base drawn plays and formations for any new playbook edits. This is why drawing football plays in PowerPoint is uncomplicated especially for those that have used MS Office tools for work.

How to call football plays from the sideline is one of the most asked questions from new coordinators or play callers. Everyone does it a little differently, and even if you have a way, you may be looking for a more efficient method.

In this episode, we will discuss exactly that. How do we like to call plays, whether on the offensive or defensive side of the ball, and what are some pros and cons for each method we’ve tried.

[00:00:52] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, yeah. Well, it’s three in two days. Maybe we’ll get another one in and who knows?

[00:00:59] Daniel Chamberlain No, you know, it’s it’s pretty funny because I was listening to I listen to a Sooners podcast. It’s like Teddy Lehman and Gabe Ikerd. And they tried to do the day, try to fake it, right? They fake the funk, they said the date of the date it was supposed to release. Yeah, he went, wait a minute. It’s not that date. It’s like this date. I feel like I’m lying. So it was I know I’ve seen experienced and it’ll come out anyway, right? So yeah,

[00:01:22] Joe Daniel They’re supposed to be kind of timeless. Anyway, I don’t think we really this isn’t exactly a current events podcast, right?

[00:01:27] Daniel Chamberlain I must know the most modern way. So today we want to talk about one of the biggest ask questions or most asked questions, I should say. And that is, how do you as a coordinator or a play caller, whatever your position is? How are you calling plays into your huddle, whether it be the offensive side defensive side, how are you getting the play into the kids? Know what to do?

[00:01:49] Joe Daniel And this is probably I mean, this is a question that I get asked a lot because coaches will come in and all of the playbooks and everything are there and everything, you know, you get it all in your head and then you’re like, Oh, I actually get this out to the guys, and there’s a lot of ways to do it. But it’s one of those. It’s, I guess, to to some coaches and to me included, if I wasn’t asked this, it’s kind of it’s obvious in a way, but I know that to maybe a new coach, it’s like, Well, you just you just tell them, right? You know, if you haven’t, if you haven’t actually been out there and maybe you’re in a situation where you’re coming from a previous era. And so you’re, you know, the last time that you were on the field, this is what I get. A lot of guys who the last time that they were on the field, you know, they’re coming into a youth program coaching for the first time. There’s their son’s gotten old enough to play football and they’re helping out and get a coordinator position and haven’t played football since, you know, 15 years ago. And it’s like, Well, we just, you know, the defense stood in the huddle. It’s like, No, no, there’s no defensive huddle anymore. So I could to ask the question a lot. I guess you kind of you were kind of in that situation what when you first got to play calling responsibility, did your head coach kind of tell you, this is how we’re going to do it or

[00:03:10] Daniel Chamberlain No, actually, I just kind of fell back on what we did in high school. Luckily, I mainly played on the defensive side. I actually can’t tell you how they called an offense back when I was playing because I just didn’t care. But and so hand and arm signals that were hand signals in the coaching way in the army with the hand and arm signals. But that’s just how we did it. I chose a different method in naming my plays. My coach used colors and it was all I can’t remember how he named the fronts on defense. I just remember the coverages and he went that route. I didn’t use colors. I just thought that was a little more is harder to remember. And so I just naturally went to him and arm signals. And of course, the first year I wasn’t really making them up and we they were already pre-named. And so then I just had to apply a hand signal that made me think of that name and then just teach the players this year going into it. Same thing. I changed the names and I just kind of on my action with Marvel characters and then went with the naming to let people know who had force. And then I let the players come up with the hand signals, but we stuck with hand signals because it was quick but enough quick enough for what we were doing. And it was easy for everyone to learn.

[00:04:16] Joe Daniel Yeah, there’s a lot of ways to do it. And I mean, you mentioned what we call the plays, which is probably a whole another podcast is, you know, what do you want to call your plays? Because anybody who knows, just take the Pistol Power Offense System. When I started running the Pistol Power Offense System, we called power right our left kind of right, counter left. And then I think we used and I know that the coach that I was working for at the time when I first really started learning the system when I was coaching the offensive line and we were running the system as Coach Mountjoy did it. He liked words. And so the but the words didn’t always, I remember, and even still like you would share film with me in the last couple of seasons, and the passing concepts would be called like bicycle and guard mean the weird plays. They were like bicycle garbage. And I don’t know what you know. I think that they were letting the kids come up with them or, you know, whatever made sense to the kids, right? But then I went to a no huddle and using words using the one-word play call idea. So power became hatred. We were running it to the right and New England if we were running it to the left. In fact, it could be any it could be Boston, it could be. You know, I made the kids look at anything related to New England. So if it was Boston, it was, you know, power. If it was so we had the ability to kind of make those one word play calls, right? So but it was still power. And then I went with a combination of what coach manager was already doing. But then it was a numbers based. So now power to the right is 24 and power to the left is 25. Really, the four, a lot of guys go, Oh, so it’s the four hole or the four gap. It’s not for just indicates power, for is just a number that indicates power because the aiming point on inside zone and power are the exact same powers called twenty four to the right inside zones called twenty two to the right. So that’s a whole different rabbit hole to go down for how you’re going to call them.

[00:06:27] Daniel Chamberlain Absolutely. Yeah. You can name them. I think in the last two years, I’ve seen about five different ways, just mainly through study to self study. Listen to your way, like you said, for just powerplay play doesn’t matter where it hits. My first year that coordinator or that a head coach was the offensive coordinator, and he called it by a whole like back number and hole number and then tagged the name of the play tag.

[00:06:50] Joe Daniel The blocking scheme basically so was what we would do. So, yeah, twenty four hours. Yeah. Yeah, it would be 24 power was power to two back and then twenty four zone would be, you know, zone to the two back, all to the four hole. Yeah, so completely different, you know, numbers, but not the same. The numbers don’t mean the same.

[00:07:14] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, this year I watched and we’ve talked about this a little more when we get to the offensive portion of this episode. But you know, a hand signal that meant a color. And then the quarterback could call anything that color. And that way, the whole offense knew what play we’re running. But you could have the same play with eight names, whatever the quarterback said. So it was there’s a lot of ways to think. There’s a million ways to to to call in plays. So realistically, you just got to find something that’s easy enough for you to understand a way that you can cover your offense or defense, whatever your scheme is, and that the players can understand it. Right, that’s yep. If no one can understand what you’re talking about, you’ve gone too deep pull up

[00:07:57] Joe Daniel Keep in mind that you’re probably going. As we go through these, you’re probably going to have to use multiple ways. There’s not going to be, you’re not, you are unlikely to select one way to do it and then just say, you know, this is the way and we are doing nothing else. And so as we talk through some of these, I know a lot of guys have their own way already, but there’s just so many. You should always be looking for some ideas because there’s very likely a better way at some point. Once upon a time, 10 15 well, not 10, 15, 20, 25 years ago. At some point, there were lots and lots of defensive coordinator who had their own way, and it involved all the defensive guys huddling up, right? If you do that today, you’re probably going to be in trouble because while you’re staying in that huddle, I’m at the line like if I see a team that huddles, because if I see that you huddle on film, this is a whole that we get in the defensive thing here. If I see that you huddle on film and again, a lot of times, you know, if you send me of your film, you do a good job cut that up. I may never know. But if I see 11 guys coming out of a little bunch as you come to the line of scrimmage, at some point it’ll probably come up. I’m going straight to the line of scrimmage as an offensive coordinator because I know that your scout team huddles, right? Probably mine doesn’t. You’re probably does. I know that your rhythm involves your defense standing there together, and I’m going to break that rib. So huddling on defense once, so you may have your own way. My point from this is you may have your own way, but it may not always be the best way, because once upon a time, that was probably the best way and it was way everybody is doing it. And then I got just shot the heck. So, yeah, I want to get into the different ways that we can call the plays and get into the different things that we can do. I do want to mention that JDFB Coaching Systems, of course, lots of ways to call the plays. I mean, we sat in a Hooter’s one year. This was when we were first installing the 4-3. We went to the clinic in Hampton, the state clinic in Hampton, Virginia, here, and we were at the Hooters in Hampton with me and my head coach installing this new defense and talked about actually, it might have been. We were starting the Georgia military 3-4-3 and we were going to have it probably was George military because it was my first year as a coordinator and we were running everything. So I was like, OK, we’re going to run zero one, two three. And I think we even had a cover 4, OK and cover 4 it was like a spot drop. So it’s not that insane. We were like, All right. Three is green because it’s green and you know, two is blue and one is orange because it starts with an O and zero is red because of crap, we’re about to give a touchdown. And, you know,

[00:10:40] Joe Daniel 4 was yellow, because it had a lot of letters and it was the highest number like, you know, we if you’re in JDFB Coaching Systems, we got lots of ways I can help you name and we can come up with ways. And of course, a lot of coaches come in and already have a naming system. You’re just incorporating things. And we are selling a whole new playbook. You don’t want to necessarily have to change everything. But what we do have in there is we’ll talk about some of the ways that we do things. I have for a Pistol Power Offense coaches examples of how to put together wrist coaches, quarterback call systems, the way the system that I use, the play calling that I use is in there for you and for our defensive coaches. We have basically video of me going through in our 4-2-5 system and the calls are the same across all the systems of all of our hand signals. What’s a hand signal is, why the hand signal is what it is because we tend to hand signal, but we also do some, you know, we’ve also done some wrist banding. We’ve also done one word play calls. And of course, you can see what the play calls are, how to use the play calls as well, so that out of the way, I guess we start talking about things you need to consider when you call those plays. Absolutely.

[00:12:08] Daniel Chamberlain So I think the number one thing that I considered was the ease, right? So if I can come as we used hand signals and like I said, I brought it from high schools and when I played, it was simple enough back then that me, a kid who knew nothing about football could go out and understand at least what the defense strategy on that play in coverage. So the ease and I can let the kids name it. That was my thing. Like, if you want to get some buy in, actually learned that from an offensive line. I don’t even know where I studied that at, but it was like, Hey, man, let them name their combos, right? Because if you name it cool, you know what it is, but they don’t. If they name it, you’re good. I sort of took that and put it back on the. It’s right if they are naming it. Maybe they’re not naming it, but if they’re giving me the hand signal, then I never have to wonder if they know what it is, because at least the four guys or six guys on the field right now know what it is and everyone else will catch on.

[00:12:56] Joe Daniel Someone out there made it up, and so he can tell the other guy,

[00:12:58] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, yeah, for a reason. He probably has a simplistic reason that isn’t so football-oriented, right? It’s not. Oh, I’ve seen this over the last several years of coaching. No, it’s like, Hey, I’m a high schooler. I’m going to math, science, history, english. And here’s the word that I can think of right now that I’m always going to able to remember. So they give you a hand signal that means the thing that tells them what to do. So it’s pretty easy. Second biggest consideration for me was tempo. When I kind of took over this job, I was told, Hey, we’re going to get thrown on a lot and it’s going to be pretty fast soon to be able to call things in. The hand signals, they weren’t good enough for that. I can get it in and if nothing else, we can always go bass. I can always just wave it off, right? Play base. And we have a hand signal for that and we just move on. So that was my two biggest considerations, and I’m sure there’s more out there that I just haven’t ran into yet.

[00:13:50] Joe Daniel You mentioned having the players, I don’t generally the players don’t make up the base combo calls in, you know, our offensive line anymore. But what they learn to do is make up other calls because they want to be a little slick, right? And Paul Alexander, who was, I don’t know, I don’t know what he’s doing now, but Paul Alexander’s entertaining Blazer clinic speaker. But just let me tell you that you don’t go there for like X’s and O’s. But one of the things Paul Alexander said and I remembered it and I think it stands true is let the guys make up the offensive line call, this an NFL coach because if they’re making up the calls, then when the head coach wants to know why they didn’t block this or why they didn’t do that, you just go, I don’t know. They made a call. I don’t know what it means. And then when the head coach, when the head coach figures out the call, you change it. And so that was his like that. That was always that you’re the offensive lineman. Come up with it. So that because the great thing about offensive line is it’s rare. It’s relatively rare that the head coach or the offensive. A lot of your offensive coordinators and I am an offensive coordinator, offensive line coach. So this won’t work with me. But a lot of your offensive coordinators are like quarterback guys, and they’re cool as long as the quarterback has time to throw, as long as there’s also the running back to run, they’re cool. They don’t want to know how, like how the sausage is made, right? So that was a Paul Alexander trick was to not let the head coach know what they’re calling because you can always be right now. I guess it keeps you. That’s how you keep a job for a long time.

[00:15:26] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah. Like, say, I don’t know.

[00:15:28] Joe Daniel Yeah, I just I don’t know what they call. They thought it was this. And then the kids will do this to you, too. They’ll be like, Why did you like that and go like? He called that to whatever like

[00:15:40] Daniel Chamberlain it sounds like a pass the buck system here.

[00:15:42] Joe Daniel All right. Look, you fight so hard. I don’t know what we’re talking about coaches communicating to players. And there’s things to talk about in this as well. But you fight so hard getting offensive linemen, especially young offensive linemen, you fight so hard, getting them to talk to each other that at some point you just you stop. You don’t care what they’re saying to each other for a while, you’re looking for like 80 percent proficiency getting the right combos called and you’re happy. And then you can start worrying about like, Hey, at first who’s looking for like, I need them to go up there and say something every play right? And I just, yeah, because that’s like the key to offensive line flip. But it’s difficult as far as your play calls, as far as getting play calls in. Yeah, I mean, definitely number one is, can you understand it? Can your players understand it? Can the other coaches understand it? Because this is a mistake. I think a lot of times is that we get these hand signals and the coach communicates it to the players, he says you know, we’re going to do this and whether it’s hand signals or words or whatever, and you don’t always communicate what all of that means to the people who aren’t the play caller. The good thing on a small staff is that like if you’ve got a handful of defensive coaches, one of them’s like the JV coordinator, so he’s got to know him. You know, the head coach, he probably doesn’t care because he’s just trying to keep things from unraveling. But your position coaches need to know it too. So your coaching staff, can they pick all that up? Can your players pick all that up? Can you, as a coach, remember all of that? Because the last thing that you want is to be sitting there going, OK, I want to call this blitz. But what was the what was the. And that happens like you’re like, you know, you start to get one of the nice things about. Then we’ll get into all this with one of the nice things about as long as you keep your play your the way that you get the calls in simple. That means you have to keep your play call your playbook simple.

[00:17:40] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, it was kind of funny what you just now you said, you know, the other coaches need to know as well. I was on a small staff. It was just like we had a DB coach and a linebacker coach and a D-line coach, right? And I, I was one of the DB coaches. I guess we had two. I had safeties. Another guy had corners, but yeah, I forgot to teach them the hands it was. I pitched them the off the defense when we all got started right, so that where they knew what the base was and what things were going to look like. But it got to a point where I was like the defensive line coach didn’t know what the signals were. And so I’m on a headphone, you know, on a headset telling him, Hey, this is what I’m looking for. And I think it was one of the stunts I think was like a text or something like that. And he just had the people doing the wrong thing because he didn’t know what the hand signal was. So definitely it wasn’t too hard to understand, but you got to teach it.

[00:18:28] Joe Daniel Yeah, you get to share it with everyone. Yes. The ability to get the call in with tempo. Most of them, I don’t think we’re going to talk about anything today that you can’t tempo as far as defense and as far as offense, you set the tempo. So and we’re going to talk about offense and defense. I know we’re talking a lot of defense here, but we’re going to talk offense and defense. It also needs to be something that you can expand on obviously hand signals you can, words you can. It depends on how you talk about some different ways to set that up. Most of these you can just, you know, you can you can expand that. You can call as many things as you want. It just needs to be adaptable. And some of that’s just creativity. But I think the one that not only easy for everyone to understand it can’t waste time and we’ll talk about a couple of system. You can start putting a lot of time into these things. And really, it can become a time waster and unnecessary. I think that we think it’s a lot of fun to come up with some of these things and come up with all these ideas. But if it starts to get in the way of your offense or defense or your players, that’s not good. So we talk about a few different things that we can do there.

[00:19:40] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah. You also think about your family time and time away from coaching. We still have other stuff to do, right? So if you’re spending an extra two hours writing up your newest grand scheme of how I’m going to call this stuff in case is there for a reason, right? Keep it simple, stupid. Like it’s just you don’t have to look cute on Friday night. You just got to win ballgames.

[00:20:01] Joe Daniel Yeah, the preference is to spend some time. You may need to spend some time getting it ready. You know what, what your system is going to be coming up with your signals in best time on the front end in a way that on the back end, you’re not going to have to continually put in, you know, two, three or four hours on a weekend bringing together your call sheet or your call system to get play calls in.

[00:20:26] Daniel Chamberlain And you mentioned earlier that you probably need multiple ways to do this, you know, and you can have one really well-practiced way. I think you have to have an alternate, though, and it does come back. Good tempo, you said the offense could set the tempo, but the situation dictates how you need to know how you’re setting that tempo. So if you need to go two-minute drill but you haven’t practiced how you’re going to call in plays for that, you know, you can kind of get into a pinch.

[00:20:50] Joe Daniel And so the first question really becomes, are you going to be in a huddle or not when we’re talking offense and like you said, you get to set the tempo if you want to be calling the play as fast as you can. You get to do that if you want to be in a huddle, you get to do that. But at some point when you’re running a play every 12 seconds, you want to slow the clock down like you’re going to need to burn clock in the fourth quarter. So do your guys get into a huddle? Do they just stand in a, you know, line of the line of scrimmage waiting? You know, how do they handle that and what do you do? Do you sugar huddle? How are you going to handle that? And at some point, if you huddle, you have to go hurry up because you need to score fast and a half in the game. Or just like I said, if I see your defense is gassed is slow. I want to go straight to the line of scrimmage and there’s multiple multiple ways to do that. Probably more common on the defensive side, but the first way to do it is hand signals signaling the play call in to the offense. And I guess it’s it’s not harder on offense, but I feel like the way, the way that things are built, it doesn’t make as much sense to me to do it this way. You know, could I make a signal for power? You know, power right. I like a very simple way that we would do it in the past, and I’ve always had hand signals of some sort when we were a hurry up team, just as just an example, midline with Seahawk. Seattle Seahawks. OK, so Seattle was middle line left Seahawks midline right. If I did like a mohawk with my with one hand, now I’m right-handed, so it was always with my right hand. But you know, to them, it doesn’t matter if it was one hand that was left. So a mohawk little, you know, shark fin with one hand and it could be to the right or the left meant left and signaling with two hands was hawk right Seahawk right. And so that was a really simple way to get that play call in. And basically what we did was we named everything runs were football plays. We’ll talk about one word calls, runs were football plays and passes were no football teams and passes were NBA teams. I just let the kids tell me what they wanted. You know, which team do you want to be? And how do we signal that was like, OK, there’s going to be Falcon? All right. You know, flap in the wings or something like that. This is going to be like Cavs. Cavs was hitch, I think. No, it was. The Cavs was Carl, and they were just like Dorsey on her chest. So it became it went from drawing a C to just kind of like rubbing my chest, your chest, you know, and so rub my chest. That was that was Cavs. And now in that situation, we let the quarterback call the direction based on what he saw call the protection direction. So I didn’t have to go double chest rub and really make it awkward. I didn’t have to, you know, really make it weird. But yeah, I mean, that was that was one that was a way that we used them on offense to get those calls in. And then what? And you mentioned here tagging receivers. We just had to make a really simple, really simple tag because we didn’t run a lot of tags. We didn’t do a lot of tagging in our offense at that time. So they just had to be really simple. So if I wanted wheel, so, you know, curl, so be Cavs wheel. So it’d be the chest rub is Cavs. And then I would just make a little, you know, spinning my finger in that wheel. And that was, you know, that was how we would do it. If it was hit and go, it would be heat whatever the signal for heat was. And I don’t remember. And it was like wiping sweat off your brows would be like heat. And then point to the sky. So that’s heat up. Here you go. So, you know, there were really, really simple tags. And honestly, if I wanted just one of the kids to do it, I just yell out Z or like or like, you know, the player’s name would be like Greg. We’ll do the thing. Yeah, you do.

[00:24:51] Daniel Chamberlain So we used hand signals this year on the offensive side, and I talked about a minute ago and it was a color scheme. So if I remember, right? A light color meant the play was going to the right and a dark color meant the play was going to the left. And so, you know, we would like a hand motion in front of the mouth was for teeth, right? So it’s white and white was a play, whatever. I don’t remember exactly. Maybe it was veer to the right inside veer. And so that would be white. And then the opposite of white was black. And so whatever, I think maybe it was helmet because our helmets are black. And so now you know that you can call this you. I had with it is number one. That’s two different hand signals for two different plays. And then the quarterback is supposed to name off one of infinity, things that are that color, and it went pretty easily and I don’t know. In the game what the quarterback was even calling out there, right? I mean, you can’t

[00:25:44] Joe Daniel They get creative out there like, yeah, always. Everybody knows what’s going on. It’s fine. Yeah.

[00:25:48] Daniel Chamberlain So it worked, OK? We did see in our passing scheme, which was not very much we were, you know, flex bones that can throw the ball a lot. It got a little harder to tag receivers. And so we did have a will. But, you know, I mean, the very first thing came to mind was if I want to do the, you know, the steering wheel motion and then the head coach didn’t want to do it for fear of someone seeing and saying, Hey, watch the wheel, and it’s a little it’s not very subtle. And so, so sometimes the hand signal because you’re trying to stay so simple, it could probably tip your hand a little bit what you’re trying to do. So, yeah, even you mentioned, you know, if you’re trying to think of something with power and you’re putting your bicep up in, like flexing your arm, maybe I don’t think that’s power right off the bat. But when I see it three or four times know I can, I can read it pretty easily. I’ve worked in a system where right and left was the bicep up and then hand down was the opposite. So, you know, they do work. It is very quick, but I think it’s if nothing else needs to be a plan, you have to gather this off season. So you’re going into it. You’re not making crap up on Thursday when you’re doing a walk through and going, Oh yeah, I forgot to make a hand signal for that to tell my receiver when I want to wheel right, so it’s something to have together.

[00:27:02] Joe Daniel I think my preference would be to have. And what we’ve tended to do is have minimal hand signals. I don’t need a hand signal for everything because I do prefer other ways of calling the play. And so I don’t want to have a hand signal for everything. It’s a lot to remember. You know, I prefer either words or wrist coach, which we’ll get to in a minute. But I think having hand signals is a great way to do like your two minute. If you’re not, if you’re not, you know, it’s a great way to do your two minute. If you’re not already, hurry up or have some sort of, you know, if you’re usually bandit or whatever, it may be a good way to do a two-minute call to just say, you know, make a quick hand signal is everybody’s running to the line of scrimmage when I guess the other thing to add in with hand and arm signals is I would not hand an arm signal. And this is a key if you’re going to have it as your base, I would either have a receivers coach or somebody like that. Be responsible for signaling in the formation where I would have a really, really simple formation. So when we were doing a lot of this, we were spread. And if you’re in the pistol power offense system or spread formations, R and L. So I would just need somebody to signal an R or L. And then the H back alignment. So if we want to be trips to the right, it’s R4. So I can just be yelling for R4 R4 as they’re getting the line or I can have a receiver coach signaling it. I found originally I wanted the receiver coach signaling it was easier for R4 R4, R4, R4, R1, L1, L4 That’s basically trip to the right trip to the left doubles. Either way, very simple and a lot of air raid like they don’t switch sides with receivers, so that works really well.

[00:28:38] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah. So the next one we won’t talk about is wrist coach. This is what I had experience with last year and I didn’t know I was up in the box and so on. On game nights, I wasn’t down to really experience how well it went. But I do know that on the offensive side of the ball, when you’re in high school and you don’t have a radio set in your helmet, you still have to talk to that quarterback. And so I kind of feel like you still end up tying in a hand signal. It’s nothing else. It’s numbers, right? I’ve got to be able to call in this number or and I don’t even know. I think his went like one through 50 something. I don’t have him and he could fit on three pages. Maybe it’s more than that, maybe 100 plays. It was very simple for the quarterback to say, Hey, run play 13 and he goes, Bingo, play 13. And now he can stand in a huddle and read off of his wrist coach so he doesn’t have to memorize it. He can just call what it says, and anybody knows what to run off and do. I did see that, but I do know there was times in games we’re trying to hurry up and he can’t get the call to the quarterback and quarterbacks got a run to the sidelines and get the number and run back. And so I did see that there wasn’t a situation with communication at this low of a level. I’m sure if you’re a semi-pro coach or something right now and you have the ability to have radio on the headset, how easy is it just to say, Hey, run this play? I mean, that’s pretty cake. But I did see a communication error there with the wrist coach. So that was my experience on year one. I maybe I misread some of it even, but it just seemed like it was very, very hard to talk through.

[00:30:07] Joe Daniel So the wrist coach is what we use and it’s for me the best way now. A big key to that is that I’m not huddling. Do I? Can I have I wrist coach, wrist banded the entire offense? Absolutely. Our offense, our scout offense is wristbanded and our scout defense wristbanded every day in practice. So everybody knows how to read a wristband, how to read a wrist coach. So if I decide, I want that to be on there, it’s going to be a limited call sheet, but it’s going to be I will have the entire call sheet on the band for everybody. But they are going to have the I’m going to have the ability to band everybody. But I I prefer to get in the huddle. I like execution. Our offensive linemen need time to get everything right. And to me now do a lot of people do you know, do we do we no huddle sometimes. Sure, when we get better, can we go faster? Absolutely. But we can put up a lot of points too without it. And we have. So I don’t feel a need. And especially when you’re just advice, when you’re not very good, don’t get don’t go no huddle like when you’re not very good, don’t go no huddle, sit on the football and give yourself a chance to be in the game in the fourth quarter. Not that, but like that

[00:31:26] Daniel Chamberlain young kid, ask his buddy, what do I do here?

[00:31:28] Joe Daniel I like the huddle because they can stand next to each other and they get time to calm down. The quarterback gets to see everybody and talk to everybody. We can sub guys in and out very easily. You know, all of that is there. So I like the huddle. But for me, the wrist coach, now the wrist coach normally has had thirty four sixty eight calls on it. Seventeen calls for columns last year because I was doing so. And now, as I’ve said before, formations not plays guys the same five run plays, but we did a boatload of formations and shifts because we weren’t very good and we had to especially early and we had to kind of do a lot of smoke and mirrors to get those five run place to work. And so I ended up adding in a third card. So we had one hundred and two slot and we didn’t use 100 new slots. But so, you know, that’s and that all that play calling system, when we open up our offensive play caller system, that’s all in there now. We put that together. I like it because I can control the tempo, but the quarterback and the quarterback uses this all week long. You know, the quarterback gets the ball, gets the wristband early in the week. I like it because I can control everything, getting calls into the quarterback. I can communicate with him now. A lot of times he comes over and stands next to me. I used to hate that, but we have time. We have time. It’s not once you know what you’re doing, you’re not in a rush. We’re very, very few delay of games, if ever. And I mean, we had some this year, but there’s there’s good reasons for that was usually our fault for not going to play it right, right? So that’s my preference. And it’ll just be the quarterback with the band going into a huddle and I give the color number. You know, there’s there’s four columns or six columns. I believe that the spreadsheet on it is in our resources, in JDFB Coaching Systems, if you want to see how it’s set up. I’ve updated a little bit since then, but that’s the basics, and I really like the fact that I can put, you know, 60 whatever calls. I’m never going to use that. I’m never going to use that many. And I said we went to 102. We never used that many. It was just we didn’t know what was going to work because we were so outgunned in a lot of games in this past season. But in prior years, I’ve never gone over four and over sixty eight calls on a wristband and never run out. I always leave multiple spaces open on the wristband and bring a fine point Sharpie and I will grab that quarterback’s wristband at halftime and say, Hey, we want to get this out of this formation and write it in. Yeah. So and then I’ve also always left open the ability because especially since we went to the numbers calls anymore what the word calls before. I’ve always got the ability to call out the formation and say 24. Now, if I said twenty-four, nine times in a game, you’d start to know on the offense or on the other side, you start to go, Hey, 24s, power. I’m sorry about doing that, like once or twice. We’ll do that in in our that’ll be our career is to just yell out numbers. You’re going figure it out that fast. So that’s my preferred way to do it, and I could do it the exact same and wristband everybody call the formation out and then call the play at the line if I want to.

[00:34:31] Daniel Chamberlain I have no doubt that. I mean, there has to be a benefit to it because everybody’s using it. How nice is it to take the whole playbook out there on the field with you? I mean, that’s that’s awesome. And it brings your younger players. It puts them, I mean, I’m a guy. I would learn better that way, probably even if I was trying to learn a new offense and I could see the words right, I could see it written in there, then that’s just going to be easier for me. Or if you made wide receiver, if you’re X, they all had the same wrist coach, right? And you could tell them what to do. Like, here’s what you do on this play, so I can see how it definitely that is a tool, absolutely a tool that you know, my defense could have use this year. I know we’re talking offense right now, but there’s guys and you’re like, Oh, I don’t know what to do on this. And instead of wasting time out, they could just look at wrist coach.

[00:35:12] Joe Daniel I ease our scout guys into that because a lot of our scout offensive linemen will be our offensive linemen. They may not start on the defensive line, so I will ease them in. And these are younger guys in with our scout team system, where early in the year it says down block level and then later in the year just says twenty four. And so that means power. So early in the year, I would tell them this is exactly what you do later in the year, I’m expecting you to progress to a point where you know what this means. And, you know, as we get better at it, but it’s all that’s always done with the mindset of I’ve got to make sure that we can do that because there’s got to be efficient for the defense. We’ve got to be run these plays fast. But you could always with your young guys, you can absolutely. And I’ve had guys who just, I mean, honestly, weren’t that bright and, you know, just weren’t picking up the play calls they were. They were really confused. And they may not be dumb kids, but they may be just football doesn’t make sense. I was good at football that makes sense to me as a player. Yeah, yeah. I didn’t know anybody else was doing that.

[00:36:13] Daniel Chamberlain Everybody understands that. But understanding the big picture is a lot harder, I think, than we can remember. Like it was, it was that hard for me as a youth.

[00:36:21] Joe Daniel So yeah, so there’s no problem getting a wrist coach and putting on there, you know, down block right for offensive linemen. I would expect the quarterback to know what the play is and know what everybody else is doing, essentially. But for everybody else, we can, you know, put the we’ve definitely put receiver routes on there and things like that to make it work. I think we’ve talked a good amount about one word play calls already. But you know, and how we did it with Cavs and Cleveland, all that kind of stuff, right?

[00:36:47] Daniel Chamberlain And I mean, it’s it’s almost like it’s almost a combination or realistically, it’s hand in our hands. You still have to be able to get that word to them without screaming across the field and burning out your vocal cords by the end of the first quarter. Yeah. I think one more comment.

[00:37:03] Joe Daniel This seems like has been romanticized in some way like I was. Tell me about one word play calls and I’m like power, right?

[00:37:10] Daniel Chamberlain Right. Yeah, I was kind of introduced to the listeners. Give it a name [00:37:15]Coach Codutti [0.0s] when he was targeted because I got put on the offensive line coach thing and I was trying to learn his own stuff and and, you know, he uses, I think it’s like Dallas and Denver. And then I think I ran into that in your system as well, right? Pistol Power Offense wasn’t. I think Dallas and Denver may have been some of your calls.

[00:37:29] Joe Daniel Those are formations. But yeah, I mean, OK, so

[00:37:32] Daniel Chamberlain Yours are formations. His were plays.

[00:37:33] Joe Daniel Yeah, but I mean, the same thing, though, when we weren’t using that, the plays I changed those to R & L because the names are too long. Right? But yeah, I mean, the same thing, the plays we were just use like, you know, words like that.

[00:37:46] Daniel Chamberlain But I think you still end up having to figure out a way to get that to your player. So you’re still looking at it wrist coach or a hand signal. It’s kind of going to be the way I think you’re going to do it in high school level most of the time.

[00:37:56] Joe Daniel Yeah, I don’t think you want to be. I don’t think you want this one word play calls to be your only way to do it is you don’t want to go 4th quarters yelling out, like, let’s say you’re going to run power, you know, sixteen times in a game. I don’t want to be sitting there going Patriot, Patriot, Patriot, right?

[00:38:10] Daniel Chamberlain They’re going to figure it out.

[00:38:11] Joe Daniel Yeah. So that the one word playing and my favorite one more play call came from Bill Legg. Bill Legg was on the podcast a long, long time ago as the Offensive Coordinator Marshall and I saw Bill Legg at a Glazier clinic when he was offensive coordinator Marshall had no idea what Bill is doing now, Google it, but great. A lot of fun, both on podcast. He was more fun in the Glazier clinic, but he was fun on the podcast and the one more play call that I will never not use is a one word play call that just means run it again. And his was heard

[00:38:42] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, just we did [00:38:43]drive mode [0.3s] this year. That was our thing.

[00:38:45] Joe Daniel If, if you pop a run for 12 yards because they’re misaligned or something like that, don’t waste any time.

[00:38:52] Daniel Chamberlain Yep, get back on it and run it again.

[00:38:54] Joe Daniel And I’ll probably use that one more play call more than anything else ever because it just is running again and people have used. I know our kids, I would use our word for it and they knew what it meant. But in the past they had used Xerox, which must be from some Tony Franklin system or something because that’s what they were running or a copy machine.

[00:39:15] Daniel Chamberlain The Xerox machine?

[00:39:16] Joe Daniel Yeah, yeah, copy it. And so they would just yell Xerox and Xerox to me used to mean, flip it. That was what our offense called Xerox, because when you Xerox it, I guess it. And they would call Xerox copy it and it was copied over the other side, something like that. So when they were calling Xerox, I’m like, Nope, just write it the same way, but they would just yell Xerox each other. And so I didn’t care. Only kid who had to hear it was our quarterback. And then he would just yell, or one kid had to hear it, and he could Xerox everybody else and the right ones. And look, if you see us running the line of scrimmage, you know, like, it’s on you to fix it and you don’t have time. So. So yeah, the one word calls, I think, are pretty self-explanatory. The the boards I saw him today, the Malzahn system, the big boards I saw him watching, probably South Carolina and North Carolina today. I learned enough of that system to kind of know what was going on, I’ve forgotten it all. Now my big take on that goes back to what we said at the very beginning, which is, do you have time to do all this? And I suppose if you know what you’re doing and you put all those cards together at the beginning of the year, you’re probably fine. For me, it was like, I’m never doing this. This is too much. And we’ve tried other things like drawing things on a board, like writing number, secret numbers on a board, on a whiteboard. And it’s like. Tread colors, we talk you mentioned colors like pointing to elements of we’ve we just had like a ring of colors and you’re like, you know, you’re looking for red, you’re like,

[00:40:44] Daniel Chamberlain Where’s the red one? And I don’t know, [00:40:45]thing always comes unclasped.

[00:40:47] Joe Daniel Yeah, I don’t have time to sort through stuff. So for me, it just took a lot of work. But I know some coaches like it, and that’s great.

[00:40:55] Daniel Chamberlain It even made the point earlier. You don’t have a bunch of people standing around with nothing to do. You’re probably not getting. You don’t have enough people to hold enough boards for it to matter, right?

[00:41:03] Joe Daniel Somebody’s got to hold these things up and you probably you have like dummy boards and we don’t even mention dummy hand signals and things like that, right? You know, I just I hate the idea that high school coaches are going to be stealing signals. And so I actually kind of just rail against even giving even making it a part of a football. It’s just like, is that part of the game in baseball? I guess so. Should it be part of the game of football? No. Do I want you to be trying to figure out my signals and then relaying them to your players? Yeah, kind of, because I don’t think I’ll just go faster when your guys are like, Oh, they’re doing this, ok.

[00:41:38] Daniel Chamberlain We only had one instance that last year and I watched the offense that we’re opposed to us. The kid was like, He knows the play. That’s like when you run it 15 times, you have 200 yards on me. It’s OK.

[00:41:51] Joe Daniel Yeah, I figured it out. Do things that are like, so simple to call and it’s like, You’re your coach knows I know what you’re running. So, yeah, but

[00:42:00] Daniel Chamberlain I think the biggest deal in the boards to me would be, I watch quite a bit of football and I would have to Google how they work. Yeah. So if it’s that complicated, maybe some year you’ve got a freshman quarterback that was us last year, right? We had a freshman quarterback. Now you’re trying to teach him an entire offense. And here’s this weird way that we call stuff in instead of me just giving you a wrist coach. I think you got to have the frickin enigma machine from World War Two to figure out your boards. You’re probably going too far. Like, go get a ga job somewhere and work your way into the college because I just feel like it’s over the head of high school.

[00:42:36] Joe Daniel My guess is that the guys who use it, it’s not something I’m going to do, and it’s probably not something you’re going to do the guys who use it. This is like a lot of other things, the guys who use it, it makes sense. And I think you can probably make those boards and say, you know, they got like the four pictures on and you say, like, this means there’s I don’t know exactly how it works, but I, you know, whatever it is, I know that it makes sense to those guys. And if you can teach it to your players, then great. But yeah, for me, it’s not worth figuring out, right?

[00:43:05] Daniel Chamberlain And you know, the last one offense, we’ve we kind of skipped past and we talked about it and I remember how we called offense back in the day. And it was probably most people how you got started because you’re huddled up, you’re trying to run the football. And so you don’t need your star receiver on the field all the time because it’s just one and it’s the skinniest kid on the team. He’s got to block a corner and that is just running a different receiver. And each time with the play, it’s tested and time right. It’s worked. You can probably still use it today. I don’t know that there’s a lot of issue with just grabbing. I mean, maybe you have three guys and you’re running, you know, X and Z and your X is expendable. You can just swap them in and out, just run a receiver in and call in the play.

[00:43:44] Joe Daniel And with today’s offenses might be, I mean, you can probably rotate five gods if you’re running a spread and you’ve got four receivers on a running back. Any of those five guys can be the guy taking a play call into you. And honestly, in a lot of teams, you can probably rotate, rotate those guys in. I prefer if I’m going when I’m not in a hurry now, I will come over. I will. This is a conversation that I will have with our quarterback and have had it many times because our quarterback will come out of silence. I used to hate it. I used to be like, How are you going to get, you know, he’s got to run back and forth all this time and our quarterback for running quarterback not not not exclusively a running quarterback, but our quarterback this past year did a lot of running. And I still, you know, I bring him over just to give him a chance to catch his breath. I don’t sit there and talk to him, and I would be like, Hey, you know, what do you like? We ought to do this like, Hey, we’re going to run. We’re going to run power, and then we just stand there and wait because I’m not raised in the call in and I’d be like Green six and you go up the hill now you have to have the timing down for that. Same thing with those receivers, I can have them come over there. I would. It absolutely works. And then you just say, but the only thing is what I worry about. And again, I think if you do it enough, it’s fine. But as your play calls get more complex, I have no problem saying, Hey, tell them you go in there and say pro to 22. You can probably get that 20 yards into the huddle and say Pro to twenty two and be OK. But I’ve got some calls now that are, quite frankly, they probably sound too long. But the way that I structure my offensive play calls is I want to be very descriptive in telling everybody what you do. And that’s my play calling style that I would not expect even my quarterback to remember me telling him all of that, right? Sometimes, like on a Tuesday, I haven’t made the wristband the wrist coach yet. And I’m. Trying some things out, and I’ll have some long play calls and where I’ll stand in the huddle with him and read off this play call and he’s like, OK, wait, what?

[00:45:47] Joe Daniel I need some of those things written down. So like, could I have him go? Could I have a receiver go in there to the quarterback in the huddle and say green Seven he goes and he reads it all. Probably. But yeah, it works. The simple playbook. It absolutely works. Yeah.

[00:46:04] Daniel Chamberlain And like I said, it could be a combination. You can connect a lot of these one word calls or running to receiver. Any way that you can have communication with your quarterback. You can use a wrist coach. I feel like even if you want to use hand signals, right? All you got to do is figure out a numbers. I remember we had like a no pattern fingertips, wrist, elbow, shoulder. Yeah, we did the body clock, right? Yeah. Yeah, you’ve got that. And you can always call things in that way and you’re calling into a wrist coach. So don’t think you’re going to have you don’t have to have the wrist coach on him trying to point at the tiny text or anything. Not just,

[00:46:35] Joe Daniel yeah, you can have a signal for, like I said, ours are 17 for callers with 17 numbers in each column. You could go smaller than that. You could do six colors with 10 calls in each column or something like that. And, you know, set your and then you would just need a signal for the color and then you could body clock the number. Or if you signal the caller, then yell out the number because like again, they’ve got to sit there and put all that together, right? And now they’ve got to figure out which color it is. And if you don’t have a lot of plays, you can put the plays in multiple spots, and that’s probably an argument for having a bigger wrist coach, right? Is that like I could put power if I know I’m going to run power to the right 25 times, I might want it in six different spots on that call on that wristband so that, you know, Brown seven isn’t always what I’m calling, you know, power, right? Right now, you’ll finally call that three times. Probably I’m going to pick up on it.

[00:47:25] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, you can. You can get into deciphering pretty intense, like pretty deep. Yeah. So on a different side of the ball, obviously, this is where I spent my time. I have called in offensive plays, but it was JV. I just got to do that last year and this year, not so much, but last year was a lot of fun. But I have relied solo on hand signals and it’s worked for me. I like the adaptability, so I want to be able to call in whatever front I want because I do it. I think it’s a lot like you teach it, but it’s kind of the pattern I was already following, so we were pretty like minded when I got into your system. That’s kind of how I’m going to call, you know, front stunt blitz. Yeah, fronts stunt blitz and then coverage, right? And so that way, the last thing the DBS always know whatever the blast is for them. And then we use [00:48:15]split field [0.0s] quarters this year. So I’m actually calling to coverages and they just knew, you know, you know, strong side, weak side was the first one called second when called but the hand signals. I mean, if I tried to call a front or a stunt and a blitz and a split field and a trips coverage on every single play, it gets long. I mean, it’s going to get a little bit long, but a lot of times I blitzes just come out of a certain front. So I don’t have to call that that eliminates that. I’m usually not trying to pull off a stunt game and a blitz game at the same time, so I can eliminate some of that. A lot of blitzes are kind of goes back to the one word calls because like, if I want to run snake, that’s a everybody knows what they’re doing on the entire defense, right? I don’t have to even call because you’re only running out of one front. So I have felt like hand signals has been the best for me. It was easy to talk to everybody on the field at the same time. Unlike you, I don’t want to huddle, right? I want to stand. I don’t want the kids running more than they have to. So if you’re a corner, I don’t want you run into the middle of the field to hang out with the linemen and then run back out there. And now you have to go cover. This dude is going to try to burn now. So it just made sense to me to use hand signals. I can talk to everyone. Year one, it made a lot more sense because I wasn’t doing the same thing as the offense. So small school, my free safeties, my quarterback, I don’t have to have him learning two different sets of hand signals. He can learn, you know, hand signals from me, and he’s using the wrist coach for the offensive side. So that’s something else I took into to and it just kind of worked for me.

[00:49:42] Joe Daniel Probably the thing that I like most about hand signals is not having to have anything for it. And on the defensive side, hand signals, just like you said, they just work probably better to me than the offensive side. Not that it doesn’t work on the offensive side, but maybe there’s a little bit more or much more of a chance that somebody’s going to steal a signal on the offensive side. The whereas on the defensive side, I’m not concerned at all about that, really. Maybe with the coverage, that would be the only thing that I would maybe have a little bit of concern about. But other than that, I like being able to call it very fast because my signals haven’t changed very much. I can signal anything in my signals have changed very, very little hand signal wise. No, I haven’t been the primary defensive play caller since 2016. But you know what, the coaches that I work with installing the defense on as a head coach, having our coaching staff installed the defense there and then a lot, some of it trickling over into the 4-2-5 that we’re running this year, but a lot of that was already in place. Our defensive coordinator had just had his own calls already in place from what was being done there before. But I know the hand signals that I use for our coaches and JDFB coaching system, and I haven’t changed them much since 2012. I’m thinking and it’s just fast. I can do it in practice. I can do it any time I can. You know, I can do the same hand signals with the scout. If I’m calling the scout defense, I mean, I can I can do all of it the same. Now we’ve banned our defense, but I can do all of it. So that’s what I just always like. And you mentioned it can get repetitive like I know that’s that’s always been because our job coaches, when I’ve been defensive coordinator or head coach, I’ve always kind of limited what our job coaches are going to do. I don’t want you out there. One in 10000 blitzes on JV Right, right. Kids need be running base. Getting getting good at it. Probably cover 3 or cover 1 or whatever kind of a base coverage they maybe, you know, become a pattern match that much in recent years. And I understand it gets boring going over three 600 times. I get it. But that’s that was what has to happen. I will always say that you need to vary it up because here is the one most significant problem with hand signals. Got to have 11 guys looking at you? Yeah, or maybe not. 11. What most? And they’ve got to be looking over and getting the call and what happens when you do run a lot of base is that when you decide to do something, they didn’t look there like at base camp and they didn’t look or like, for example, when I want to change the front from over to front. Very subtle difference. The alignment of the two from a one tech to a two eye for the nose. I probably can’t even tell if that guy lined up in a front from the sideline, right? And so I’ve got it. And so I took this from Ricky Coon, again he’s a defensive coordinator when I was an Ellsworth and Ricky would yell, you know, he’d just before he did anything else. He say eyes, eyes, eyes. They just like a trigger word. Eyes like everybody’s eyes on me. Now I’ve seen some other coaches. I’ve seen some coaches who took that and went like to town with it. They’re like, Oh, his eyes are until they have, you know, everybody looking at him and they’re like, Oh, oh my God. Just like, look eyes, eyes, eyes like signal. OK, because that’s it, right? And then we move on. So and if a kid’s not getting the signal, you know, if he’s if he just didn’t look one time, he’s going to look over to the kid next to him and he’s going to say, Hey, I missed it. The kid’s going to say it’s over three. It’s going to be like, cool. If you got a kid who just never looks, then you got to take him off the field and have that talk, right? So that’s the one problem you run into with hand signals that you don’t run into. Some of the other things I tell you kids can be be not listening to

[00:53:24] Daniel Chamberlain Kind of a hidden con that I found on hand signals this year was complexity. And it wasn’t for me or for my players, but with other coaches I’ve mentioned earlier, like I didn’t teach my assistant coaches, but the head coach was worried because he didn’t know my hand signals and I verbatim. It was something similar to like, you run more blitzes than a college team or something, and we really did it. But we just had like, if I wanted to blitz a backer, it’s just fire and then I can mix that up, right? I mean, I just did little. I’m doing the pistol thing on camera. Y’all can’t see how to shoot a little hand pistol and then throw a number one, three, four or whatever. And I wish I could tell a certain linebacker the Blitz, and it looks more

[00:54:03] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, right? And so from an outside source, it came down to, you’re doing, you know, you have way too much stuff. It’s way too involved. And realistically, I think it was just a I didn’t take that person aside and go, Hey, here’s what I’m calling. Here’s what they mean. If you ever have any questions, holler at me, you know, I didn’t really do that. And so hand signals can get especially think about being on the outside, right? You don’t know what this means and do just flailing his hands around doing these crazy signals. It can be a little complicated. So just consider that. And that kind of reminded me that like the younger kids who I’m also not having direct conversation with may also feel the same way. Like our defense is so complex. My mind is blown because coach didn’t teach me this exactly because I’m not a starter.

[00:54:43] Joe Daniel Be really, really mindful. Now, a quick way to fix that again. I mentioned that, you know, one of the guys on your staff is calling JV Defense. He’s going to know it. Have other guys on the staff call the defense during practice, which is a way that they can just kind of get to know the calls and get familiar with them, but be really mindful of if certain hand signals look the same where kids are. If the kids are getting confused by your hand signals, then your hand signals aren’t working. And I would just say, if kids are confused, I would say, how do you want me to signal it? Minor are like always you can let the kids. I’m not going to let the kids restructure, you know, resignal the entire playbook because right now it’s like sign language to me. Like if somebody speaks sign language, they can just it’s like talking, OK, it’s a language to you now,

[00:55:30] Daniel Chamberlainliterally like talking. It is like, OK, but.

[00:55:34] Joe Daniel It’s a language. And so this is my language. The hand signals are my language of the defense, so if something in there is a problem, then I will change it. But you know, like the signals for over and under aren’t changing because it’s over and under. But I’ve seen some signals through time where guys said, Look know this look the same or this, you know, I don’t know what that means or whatever, and I’m open to that. I was willing to make it better wristbands on the defensive side. The only thing I liked about wristbands is that I don’t like to have a lot of defensive calls, and because you have hand signals, you can signal whatever you want. I want to move a little faster through the rest of these. We’ve talked about how they work already. We’ll just talk about how they work on the defensive side. But one issue with wristbands, the one thing I like about wristbands on the defensive side, I wouldn’t have 68 calls. I’d have like 10. And that’s what I liked about wristbands. Was that it? It forced me to have a very small call sheet. Now, when I’ve used them, I have always been a hand signal guy. I would put on a wristband the 10 calls that I expect to use. I can always hand signal something if I want to do a different app.

[00:56:42] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah. Once again, combining them right? That’s I think that’s we’re going to get as you’re always going to use more than one of these. I would feel like because, yeah, like I say, we’ll move these pretty quick. The words and calls are one word calls or whatever you want to call it.

[00:56:55] Joe Daniel It’s kind of like I’ve been using that for years has gone on base. Right, right.

[00:56:59] Daniel Chamberlain Well, you know, my goal and then, you know, I grew up where a will backer blitz was a wax phrase. We had a hand signal for it to wax, wax on, wax off. But coach could just scream it from the sideline. Yeah. The opposition didn’t know what was going on. Maybe they did if he called it several times. And so whatever you’re calling your blitz, you’ve given it a name now a one word name for whatever that is. If you’re running a snake blitz, if you run whatever it is, you’ve already done that because you gave it a hand signal and you gave it a name. So these things are very interchangeable.

[00:57:30] Joe Daniel And if you run your blitzes out of, say, a specific look, you know, like Tiger, Tiger, Cat, Tiger, OK. It’s always out of over. Now, if we’re 4-2-5 or base 4-2-5, let’s say it’s always out of the base front, always actually out of a g front, always cover 0 tiger is tiger. So I don’t need to call over tiger 0.

[00:57:53] Daniel Chamberlain Right?

[00:57:54] Joe Daniel OK, I can just go. I do the little Paul swipe. All right. This look, it’s like just imagine preparing everything. Yeah. It’s like, it’s like, you know, meow. Or Look, we’re on camera. I know you guys aren’t what the clip this for this, for instance, going for Twitter. Yeah. So I can do that. I just. Tiger, you know, Tiger, kids just go Tiger, Tiger, Tiger. I don’t care. You know, sometimes you run Tiger 30 snaps in a game, but not very often. It’ll be OK. And if we are running it 30 times in a game, it’s because we know what you’re doing and you know what we’re doing, and we’re just going to kind of sort this thing out as we go. So, yeah, I mean, we can do one word calls. It’s simple. I don’t like the idea of calling out the defense in anything other than that like I would. I would use that in, you know, for blitzes and things that you always do a certain way or just a base. But I really like the descriptive and I go back to the hand signals. I would tell the defensive linemen a once up signal. Once I get past front stunt, you can turn around right if you really don’t care if it’s zero, three and two. Whereas the corners, like all you need to see, is the last hand signal.

[00:59:09] Daniel Chamberlain Yep, my linebackers were the ones they repeated everything for me, which made it awesome and the previous this year taught them that. So it made it really easy to exactly what you’re saying. Like I call it, I have to call it usually twice, and then it’s getting echoed.

[00:59:22] Joe Daniel I always did a hanging huddle. I always do a hanging huddle where the guys that are going to the, you know, the defensive line is together with the Mike linebacker usually now if you split field, you would not want that with the defensive line is up front there together. So they got four guys with him. You might have the Mike linebacker, the overhang safety, you know, a couple of guys that are going to switch sides, they’re huddled up over here. Some guys that are huddle up over here and the corner just kind of comes in near them. So there’s somebody nearby them so that they can go. What do you do? What was the signal or what was that? What was the word or whatever it is? So they get that information from somebody.

[00:59:58] Daniel Chamberlain It gets even easier when you start talking people who do boundary corners or field corners, right? Yeah, I mean, your person is already swapping anyway. So, you know, communication becomes very easy in that situation. Yeah, automatic checks is something that we’ve I’ve had to use both ears. It didn’t have to be taught to me. It just kind of made sense. Like when I see this, I expected this. This is what we’re going to do this year. I almost could have ran the entire defense on automatic checks, right? It got to a point where and in fact, we did on my the weak side passing strength, weak side. I just told my weak safety like if it’s if you’ve got one receiver. Are you running this if you have two receivers, you’re running this like, I don’t want to have to worry about your side of the ball right now because it don’t matter to me unless I want to send a blitz from there and then I’m changing it anyway. So I think sometimes that just kind of takes care of itself with automatics. It is more learning week to week. I would say essentially, you are changing what you’re calling something to every single week based on tendencies or whatever.

[01:00:59] Joe Daniel Yeah, well, some of them. But like you mentioned and we did for a long time, one receiver removed. You know, we just call quarters for a split field. And if you had one receiver removed, it was. This was when we were in. Our 4-3 would be alert. So it would be if once you remove sorry, it would be read, which is our sky call now. And if you had two receivers removed, it would be alert, which is our blue call now. So you just go, OK? It of blue and it’s automatic based on one receiver, two receivers removed. So if you’ve got a pro set sky, if you got a twin set, you know that’s that’s an automatic. But I don’t think I don’t see any problem with and you just have a call that you can override it with.

[01:01:39] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, and we do the same thing with trips, right? I mean, yeah, there’s several ways to play trips. I run three ways, but we go into the week with one way. So I’m not having to tag it every single play when I’m calling it out there. Hey, right now, this is what we’re running. If if they find a way to beat that, we’ll change the next one. Right?

[01:01:57] Joe Daniel Especially motion trips, because you don’t have you can’t signal that. So that’s an automatic. So. So again, combinations of things, your trips check your empty check. They’re automatics, you’re using. You’re using automatics. If you have an empty check, you should. If you have a trip check-based trips check, you should there automatically. So you already have automatics in. What I don’t like is when you get too complex with automatics, where you’re trying to have somebody identify the play, call every snap. If that makes sense, if it’s a couple, if then if it’s, you know, if it’s one receiver, if it’s two receivers, if there’s six different automatics that he can call or the thing can be called, then I get like, We might be slowing, you know, we might be slowing our defense down because now they’re having to be the coordinator and the and the player.

[01:02:45] Daniel Chamberlain Yes, absolutely. I know that we did some automatic blitzes last year off of and I’ve gone both ways at this, but I was we got to where people are going to run jet sweep on us and our way of shutting it down was going to blitz their strong side safety. They almost always ran it the same way. And so we would just blitz the safety on that side and just meet them in the backfield one for one for you right now is it the best plan? No, absolutely not. But what? We were crossing some extreme speed, and I just wanted to be there to stop it right now. So that was another automatic. But you’re right, you don’t want to give it to where they’re having to read whoever is going to be your automatic calls, usually a free safety, if he has to read the whole formation and which player is where the tight ends at the X now or the tight end, the slot he’s the weapons are automatic changes. If he’s if he’s going to be at fullback when you make another automatic, no, like, I think you can get way too deep. Like you’re saying, maybe a few formations, a few motions, whatever it is going to kind of tip your hand to what they’re doing.

[01:03:42] Joe Daniel And if you’re playing an offense that does a lot of flex back, you’re bringing that guy in motion. If you’re playing against pistol power offense system and we’re bringing that h back over and we’re running. Look, bass play call is pro ham pro three twenty four, which is motioning to motioning that back over and running power in the direction that back went OK. I absolutely know that, you know, when that guy motions over, we’re probably running power. And what I’m looking for is for you to over adjust to that. So when you start to automatic things, you have to make sure no one that you’re not getting caught up in that, you know, if you’re flex bone on every Flex Bone team has a way to run that motion and then bring it back the other way. Right, right. There. Just everybody does they know Wing-T Same thing. They know you’re going to try to move with that motion. You go, Oh, every time they do this? No, no, I promise you. Now, if you if you’ve never seen him do anything else, by all means, try it. Just no, there’s probably just be ready for when they go something else. The other thing before we move on from automatics is and a big one with this is I’ll give you a really good example. Take that motion as an example. When that guy motions defensive lineman, I want you to slant in the direction of the motion. It’s a really common automatic that coaches try to run. I don’t like that call, and here’s why we just talked last week about last week for the people out in space. We just talked last week about defensive line play and where do we never want our defensive linemen eyes to be backfield? Never want them to be in the backfield. And what we just tell them, look in the backfield for the guy that’s in motion, right? So make sure that these things don’t contradict what they’re supposed to do normally or put them in a position where they can’t do them. That’s my only other warning on automatics because I don’t I do not like that automatic again working for you. Great. I also as somebody who. A defensive line that did not that would not work for me, I just couldn’t do it.

[01:05:38] Daniel Chamberlain The last option here, I guess, aside from running a quarterback out of a play. Don’t do this. Don’t do that is as player called. And this is something when I was in high school, Coach Ridley was our D.C. then and that’s something he wanted to. And I think it was a challenge for him really to be that good of a teacher. But he wanted to be able to teach his free safety, to be able to see what he seen and made him a better football player made him a better understanding or more understanding of the defense. And so that’s this year. I wasn’t there because I wasn’t I didn’t feel like I was even at that position. Yet in the defense, how am I going to expect the kid to know what I knew? But it was his end idea, I guess, was to take a free safety and he’d be able to read the formation and they could spend extra time doing, you know, after practice, whatever and talk about tendencies and kind of have that kid where he understood what was coming. I can call the defense from here. It was something he had a lot of success with. It may not be for everybody. You may not have someone who can like legitimately do this for you. But it is an option.

[01:06:41] Joe Daniel It’s the same as letting the quarterback call the offense. And I know, I know some coaches have said that they they prefer that because they want the quarterback like they want the quarterback to be in charge of the game. And it’s the same idea is and I think it’s probably much easier from an offensive perspective because the quarterback can go into the huddle and make the decision and come out too. Whereas on the defensive side, they’re out of the huddle, they’re going, All right, we’re going to this.

[01:07:04] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, and he can get a, you know, he decides when the ball snapped as well. He can get a pre snap read by. This is the thing. This is what I was looking for. Like I said, we need to be a little more difficult and

[01:07:12] Joe Daniel The quarterback has some audibles and things like that. They’re basically automated. But the way that I will use those is they’re automatic for the offenses. We didn’t talk about automatics on the offensive side, automatics are like, you’re uncovered. If we only have three defenders to the weak side of trips, it’s an automatic stretch left or stretch weak. Those kinds of things are automatics on the offensive side.

[01:07:32] Daniel Chamberlain I think that another pro to this style of play calling is, I think you’re going to have less maybe not coverage bust because you still got to trust all the guys get the coverage, but you shouldn’t have uncovered players because now you have a guy that’s scanning the whole field. I know last year we gave up a really long touchdown on a throw because I had a backup free safety and he went to the wrong side of the field. It’s just the linemen issue. Had he been a guy that had been trained to read the entire offense, he would’ve looked over and be like, Oh crap, you know, I left a slot uncovered over there. That’s my guy. He did, and the guy patted his head and he ordered on offense and they took it to the house.

[01:08:09] Joe Daniel And Coach Shackleford talked about that in our RPO that even though this was a separate topic, but that 70 percent of their think something like 70 percent of the scores that they when they went back and looked at film, 70 percent of the scores they gave up on defense were a busted play or busted defense. So anything you can do to eliminate that, obviously now he’s he’s talking about a high-level team, probably when they’re lined up right, you’re not scoring, you know, right? So it may be a little different, but if you are, if you can eliminate those types of things, I guarantee you for all of us, how often do you look at a defensive play and you go, Oh, if he had just been right there? Yeah, I bet it’s probably over 50 percent of your scores. I bet most of the scores that you give up aren’t just all your little guys getting run over by better players. No, probably most of your score have something more to him than that,

[01:08:58] Daniel Chamberlain and it could be scheme-wise that a lot of it’s going to be just kids go to the wrong place.

[01:09:01] Joe Daniel But yeah, maybe it’s something simple.

[01:09:04] Daniel Chamberlain That’s a lever that you need to learn to pull, right?

[01:09:06] Joe Daniel Yep. So, yeah, I mean, lots of ways to do it. You know, I just find a lot of coaches going into the year and it’s always it’s and we’re doing this in December, and I’ll have to refer back to this in July and August because a lot of coaches will study our coaching systems and they’ll get them all down. And then they’ll be like, Oh, how do I tell the players what to do, right? And it’s like, August, I’m like, OK, yeah. So again, I have the videos in there for that on how we do it, but there’s a lot of ways to do it, and none of them are right. None of them are wrong. What matters is on offense. Don’t get delay games. I think that’s. Don’t delay games and make sure that everybody knows what to do. Now, the simplest way to make sure everybody knows what to do is to go into a huddle and talk it through the next simplest may be a wristband or whatever. Maybe one word, whatever works for you. And you know, then it all comes down to your tempo and on defense. Again, it’s the same thing. How do I get all 11 players to know what to do and not have a bust? Not have a misalignment, not have a blown coverage, not have, oh gosh, the classic one with the 3-5-3 and 33 stacks the classic one in the 5-3, it’s all the same defense. The classic one is that you call the blitz, you call the slant, the guy slants and the blitzer goes right behind his back. And that means that the other gap from that stack is wide open, which, by the way, is where they’re always running for 100 percent of the time. At the very least you’ll cut there because it’s wide open. So like, how do we minimize those things from happening? That’s that’s ultimately what matters with it?

[01:10:40] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah. Communication is very key and just finding the way that you’re comfortable with the way that your players understand. Understanding the intelligent football IQ of your players, you know, if you maybe school is running them over, you got guys that are barely scraping by on the list. And it’s not because of effort. Maybe you don’t need to have them remembering a thousand hand signals, right?

[01:10:58] Joe Daniel You can always remember that they’ve got, you know, four or five or six real classes. All is not even if you have a football class, this isn’t real. This is an academic shouldn’t be so complicated. And like you talked about teaching the free safety or teaching a quarterback, that’s probably a special guy that you’re going to handle that with. You’re not just you’re not like, I wouldn’t force that, you know what I mean? Right? And he should be ready for that. Imagine? Yeah. Yeah, it’s the right guy. And I remember hearing a coach who was the head coach at Guilford, which for those of you who aren’t in the mid-Atlantic area, Guilford is a Division three college out here in Ypodac in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and in North Carolina, and he ran a variation of a four four four two. And one of his big things, which I’ve always taken, is that the first player that you look for is the free safety. And if he didn’t have a elite and obviously this is college, so it’s a little bit different. But if he didn’t already have a free safety, he was looking for a freshman to come in and be the free safety and be the free safety for the next four years because he wanted to have that knowledge, just like you do with a quarterback, you know you want a quarterback takes over the program. Yep.

[01:12:11] Daniel Chamberlain Well, I think we have pretty much opened all the cans on how you can possibly talk to players during a football game.

[01:12:18] Joe Daniel We did not talk about calling special teams sorry. Yell it out, right?

[01:12:25] Joe Daniel Whisper to your kicker how you wanted to onside it. Stop kicking deep and giving up touchdowns.

[01:12:28] Daniel Chamberlain Yeah, we went through why it’s important. We covered some offensive stuff, some defensive stuff. Maybe you don’t want them to be the exact same way. Remember, you’re working with kids. Remember they’re already overloaded. Most likely.

[01:12:40] Joe Daniel So, oh, don’t wristband both sides if you can avoid it, right? Because then they’re like

[01:12:48] Daniel Chamberlain Double wristbands and then, you know, just find a way and practice it and stick with it a year. I mean, I guess if it’s automatic fail here, if you jump straight to letting players call it all, you’re probably not going to be that successful anyway. In this tutorial we will create a football penalty shootout game in visual studio using c# programming language. In this game you are able to click on a selective targets around the goal post and as you select one it will shoot the football towards it. The goal keeper has its own independent movements and he can block your goals from being made. The overall structure of the game is simple and easy to understand.  We are creating this tutorial in Visual Studio 2017 using the Windows Form application and C# programming language. Make sure you download the game assets from the link in this tutorial page to follow along.

Lesson Objectives –

  1. Create a football penalty shootout game in visual studio using c#
  2. Create click events using picture boxes
  3. Create goal keeper movements using lists and strings
  4. Using a timer object to animate the ball and the goal keeper
  5. Using image sprites and changing the goal keepers state within the game
  6. Using various data types such as Integers, Booleans, Strings and List to make the game work
  7. Using windows form components such as Picture Boxes, Timers and Labels to complete the game

Start a new project in Visual Studio, call it Football Penalty Shootout Game, make sure you have picked the windows form application and click OK.

In the form Properties change the size of the form to 915, 717 and change the text to “Football Penalty Shootout Game”.

In the same properties window find the background image and click on the 3 dotted button.

Once you clicked on it you will see this box, Click on the import button under the project resource file.

Now browse to the assets you downloaded from MOOICT, select them all and click OK.

From the resource selection window find the background image and click OK.

In the properties window under the background image, there is an option called background image layout, choose NONE from the drop down menu. We don’t want the background to have any effects in this game.

From the tool box drag and drop a picture box.

Right click on the picture box and click on Choose Image.

Select the target image from the resource selection window.

In the properties window for the picture box change the background colour to yellow.

In the same properties window change the name to topleft (no spaces) size to 40, 38, Size Mode to Stretch image and tag to “topLeft”. The tag is important and make sure you do not add any space and carefully place the capital letter in it Make sure its all as this tutorial.

The reason this has a tag of top left is because its placed on the top left of the goal post. Now you can copy and paste this picture to match the layout below.

Now that the goal aims are done, add another picture box to the form, once again right click on the picture box and pick the stand-small image from the resource selection window.

For this new picture box change the following in the properties window

Name: goalKeeper

Back Colour: Transparent

Location: 426, 174

Size Mode: Auto Size

Add another picture box to the form, right click on the picture box and from the resource selection window choose the football image and click OK.

Change the following for this new picture box in the properties window

Name: football

Back Colour: Transparent

Location: 431, 515

Size Mode: Auto Size

Recap- We set up the background, the goal post targets, the goal keep and the football. To complete the User interface of the game we need to add 2 labels.

Drag and drop two labels on the form.

Click on Label 1 and lets change some settings in its properties window.

Name: missText

Back Colour: Transparent

Font: Bold Size 14

Fore Colour: White

Location: 12, 16

Text: Miss: 0

Drag and drop two timers to the form.

They should look like this when they are dropped to the form. Click on the Timer 1 and lets change few things in its properties.

change the name to keeperTimer and interval to 20. Leave the rest as is. Now click on the timer 2 and change the following in its properties

Change the name to ballTimer and interval to 20.

<– Click on the little lightning bolt icon on the properties window while you have the ballTimer selected.

In this box type in shootball and press enter. This will take you over to the code view, come back to the design view we need add more events for this game.

Click on the keeper time and go to the events window by clicking on the small lightning bolt icon.

Inside the tick event type moveKeeper and press enter.

Come to the design view for our last event.

HOLD CTRL KEY and CLICK on all of the target picture boxes.

You can select multiple objects in visual studio. Make sure that you have only selected all of the target picture boxes. Now if you look at the events window for all of them you can find a click event from the list.

In the click event type in setTarget and press enter.

Now we have added the 3 events that we need for this game.

Now lets take a look at how the code view is looking thus far.

Add the highlighted code in the code view, all the codes are explained in the comments, make sure you type them in there as well which will help understand the code further. The first list of highlighted code above are the variables for the game, we have a random number generator, list of strings, integers, strings and a Boolean. All of these variable help us make this game work. Make sure you have inserted them clearly and accurately. In the bottom of the code view you will see the two highlighted empty functions called checkScore and changeState both of these function are empty right now but we will show you the code to include inside them. The main thing to note down right now is to do this code in the right order.

Shoot Ball Event

Above is the shoot ball event. This event will run when the ballTimer is activated. in the beginning of the event we have football.Left -= ballx and football.Top -= bally, this line links the football to the ballx and bally variables. When the numbers change within those variables the ball will follow those numbers. For example if the ballx is -1 the will move towards the left of the screen and if its 1 then it will move towards right of the screen, same is applied to the vertical y position.

Next is the big If statement. In side of if statement we are able to call multiple statements and we are also able to add anything we want to them as along they return a true or false value.

If the statements are true then we can add more instructions in here such as move the ball back to the default position and reset the ballx and bally variables, set aim to false and stop the timer.

Now we have 5 different aim points good thing in programming we are able to use multiple statements inside of one if statement.

By using the || symbol we are able tell the program that if the first statement isn’t true, then try another to see if that matches the condition. This way we can go over all the 5 targets and then stop the ball when it reaches its destination ready to played again.

Move Keeper Event

Below is the move keeper event, this event is kind of long so as you are following it through make sure you follow the brackets and symbols accordingly. This event will move the goal keeper to the directed state it’s in. The logic behind this event is we save the goal keepers state in the state string, when the data inside that string changes we move the goal keeper accordingly. All the codes are explained in the comments.

Set Target mouse click event

This is the event that’s linked to all the target picture boxes. The reason we have used one event and 5 is because there are ways for us to find out which picture box sent the trigger for this event and then take accurate action based on that. By working this way we save time and redundant codes which we don’t need. So to keep things efficient lets take a look at this event.

To start off we need to make sure that players can’t multi click on the buttons this is why we start with the if(aimset) {return;} What this if statement does is when the aim set is false meaning when the ball is animating then we will not allow the player to click any other buttons and activate it. Until the aim set boolean is set back to false this event will not trigger again. Neat.

After that we are starting both ball timer and keeper timer because we want them both to animate when the player has chosen their target. After that the change state function will which is responsible for changing the goal keeper image.

var senderObject is a variable that will save information about who sent the trigger for this event, remember we have 5 different targets on the screen and we can’t shoot the ball at all of them so we need to know which one sent the trigger for this event. This is how we find it. var senderObject = (PictureBox) sender; tells the program exactly which picture box was clicked.

When we find the picture box then we will change the picture boxes background colour to white, just to give a feedback on the click event. Remember it’s a developers responsibility to let the users know when they have successfully interacted with the game such as giving some small feedback that their action was taken into account.

Then in this event we need to check the tag of each of these picture boxes clicked. The first one is if the sender object has a tag of topRight then we will move the ball towards the top right of the goal post. After that if the picture box clicked has a tag of right, then we move the ball towards the right of the goal post and so on. Each of the if statements have been commented in the code so please follow along carefully and make sure you do not miss out the curly brackets or the semi colons, it’s a common mistake just saying.

End of ALL of these if statement we finally run the check score function. This function will be explained next.

Check Score Function

Below is the check score function. As you remember from earlier this is the empty function we created earlier now we have all of the instructions to put in to it. First the function starts with a big if statement as we have seen before, this time we are checking if the goal keeper and the player picked the same target. If they have then we add 1 to the miss and show the miss text on the screen, else then goal keeper missed the ball and you have scored so we add 1 to the score and show the score on the goals label. This is a simple function, make sure you pay extra attention to the quotation marks and the OR || symbols in the if statement.

Change State Function

This is the change state function, in this function we have put in the instruction to which direction the goal keeper is going to choose and when he does we will change the images accordingly. Now to begin we start the keeper timer.

Then we are creating an integer called i and within this integer we will randomly choose an item from the keeper position list we created early in this game, remember there are 5 different positions the goal keeper can go to, in computer the numbers always start 0 so we will have 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 to complete all the different positions saved inside that list. By using the random number generator we can make the game more dynamic so we don’t which direction the goal keeper will go.

the state string will hold the position we picked by using i integer in the line before, after that we need to run another switch statement to determine which was picked and what instructions to give the game next.

If the random number picked is 0 then we will change the goal keepers image to left, if the random number picked is 1 then we will change the goal keeper image to right image and so on and so forth. Each line of the code is commented so make sure that you are following it accurately.

The game works great, if you have encountered any errors, look back the code and see what’s missing. Well done following through thus far.

What we haven’t done but you should try to implement in the game, if the game you created is working right now you will notice that you can take as many shots as you want and game will play it all, there is no game ending script in place. Hmm now think where you can put that how can you limit the amount the player plays before they win or lose the game. It’s not very difficult you can do it. Moo out.
