How many book pages is one word page

Writing is fun when you have the right tools. These could be a pen (if you’re writing directly on paper), an iPad or laptop. Microsoft has also blessed writers with a powerful tool that comes packed with diverse features. It’s called the “Microsoft Word.”

Other word processing and document processing platforms are now available. But it’s so obvious that many of us, including myself, may have to stick with Microsoft Word for a long time.

But now here’s a tricky question for every Microsoft Word user and those interested. Here it is.

How many Microsoft Word pages equal a book page?

Now let’s rephrase the question. How can you tell how many Microsoft word pages you have to write to make a book page? The answer isn’t direct. Many factors play a crucial role when it comes to determining the number of Microsoft Word pages that can make a book page.

Factors That Determines Microsoft Word Pages That Equals A Book Page

Several factors determine the number of MSWord pages that forms a book page. The answer is not set in stone. It can be one, two, three or more. Let’s find out factors that plays a crucial role.

The Size of the Paper:

There are several paper sizes on Microsoft Word, ranging from letter-sized papers — the default paper size—measured at 21.59cm x 27.94cm to JIS B5 measured at 18.2cm x 25.7cm. The most commonly used paper size is the A4, measured at 21cm x 29.7cm, and a page contains roughly five hundred to two hundred words.

The Font/ Font Size:

Most fonts on Microsoft Word, like the Aharoni fonts, are bigger and bolder than fonts like Calibri, which is lighter. Therefore, an Aharoni font at size 12 consumes more space than a Calibri font of the same size.

Margin Size:

Microsoft Word has a default margin size of 1 inch from the top, bottom, and sides of the paper, but Word users have the freedom to adjust and customize the margin sizes according to their writing tastes.

Line Spacing:

Line spacing plays a considerable role. Single line spacing allows for more words to be included on a page but makes the word appear clustered; meanwhile, double line spacing gives room for the words to breathe but take up more pages.

Therefore, considering the factors stated above, if you make use of an A4 paper size using Times New Roman in Size 12, the default margin setting, and single line spacing, you should have roughly between 350-500 words on a single Microsoft Word page.

Other factors that contribute to the number of words in a single Microsoft Word page are the kerning, leading, word formatting, paragraphing, alignment, etc

Therefore, there is no hard and fast rule for his many words that it can contain on one Word page as it varies all the time. Once the number of words on a Word page has been deduced, it should be easier to determine how many of these words would make up a book page.

To do that, one thing that has to be considered is what a book page is. Books come in different forms, volumes, sizes, shapes, and designs depending on economic and aesthetic elements. One of the things that are considered is the number of pages that will make up a book.

A Handy Tip: A book page refers to the front and back of a leaf of one paper in the book. A book page is a bit smaller in size than a Microsoft Word page.

Microsoft Word Pages And Book Pages

Book pages are entirely different from Microsoft Word pages. Consequently, the layouts and arrangements are reasonably distinct. Depending on the book’s context and what you intend to portray, there are different types of formats to depict that feeling.

The book format used for an academic paper to educate readers would vary in size and style from a fictional novel set in the middle ages or the biography, painting a picture of the life and times of a famous person.

The paper size used for a fictional novel or a novella falls within the range of 4.25 x 6.87, or 5 x 8 inches. The paper size of a non-fictional book ranges from somewhere between 5.5 x 8.5 and 7x 10 in inches.

To know how many pages a book would contain, however, an author must first have an idea of the range of the number of words they intend to write. For every genre of writing, there is a stipulated word count range that is presupposed.

Since the information in non-fictional and academic works is supposed to be sharp, precise, and straight to the point, the word count range is somewhere between fifty thousand to seventy thousand words. It can contain approximately two hundred pages. Still, because a work of fiction involves creating an imaginary world out of nothing, the content is usually more voluminous.

Hence, the word count range is approximately one hundred thousand words which can account for about three hundred and twenty to three hundred and fifty pages of a book.

Also, while there is a sizeable difference between a Microsoft Word page and a book page, the same rule that applies in Microsoft Word applies to a book page regarding the factors that determine how many words can be contained in a book page. Hence, things like margins, spacing, fonts, and font size also have to be considered when writing a book.

Generally, it has been deduced that the approximate amount of word you can get from a Word document using a font like Times New Roman in a 12 point font size, single line spacing, and justify alignment is five hundred words.

One Microsoft page is closely determined to be about 1.5 to 1.75 book pages, but this is solely an assumption. It is important to reiterate that certain factors play an essential role in determining the word count and book pages.

Many components are examined to determine how many Microsoft Word pages make up a book page. Still, because there is no universal style for writing and no fixed rule for formatting a book, we might never really be able to reach a resolute conclusion to this debate.

However, it is possible to have an idea of how many word pages equal a book page. The first thing you need to do is determine the number of words on the Microsoft Word page. Then, choose the trim size that you favour for your book.

For example, you can choose to use a trim size of 5.5 x8.5 inches for a fiction book. If you decide to use a 12 point font size for your book, divide your word count by three hundred—this is the approximate amount of pages your book is deduced to have based on the trim size— and you should have a rough analysis of how many pages your book would contain.

Please note that this formula is only meant to give you an idea of the number of pages your book will comprise. Nonetheless, the general perception is that smaller trim sizes produce more book pages than bigger trim sizes.

For example, if you employ a trim size format of 6×9 inches for your book using twelve-point font size, you are expected to divide your word count by four hundred and twenty-five to get your approximate amount of pages.

Does The Number Of Microsoft Word Pages Or Book Pages Matter?

Most times, publishers turn down a book solely because the word count does not meet the quota of readers’ expectations. Also, if a book is too voluminous, it might incur extra costs in terms of printing, shipping, and sales, and this might contribute to the loss of your customer base because most readers would only spend a certain amount on the books they want to read.

However, if your book is below the appropriate word count, it might be straightforward to overlook it as uninteresting and devoid of information. Therefore, one of an author’s objectives is to make sure their book is the right length.

Conclusion

By considering the various factors mentioned here, you can understand how many Microsoft Word page would make up a book page.  You can also use information stated on this post to figure out the number of pages too.

Asides from Microsoft Word, these tips are useful even if you are using other word processors like Google Doc and the likes. This is because they are not so different from using Microsoft Word.

CJ grew up admiring books. His family owned a small bookstore throughout his early childhood, and he would spend weekends flipping through book after book, always sure to read the ones that looked the most interesting. Not much has changed since then, except now some of those interesting books he picks off the shelf were designed by his company!

Are you perhaps going to turn your manuscript that was typed using Microsoft Word into a book? Or are you simply planning to print your journal?

Whatever your intention might be, the question of how many pages the word document might convert into when it is manifested into a book page might have crossed your mind.

Knowing the answer to this question is helpful to estimate the cost of printing before going for the actual task. It will also help you to plan your book and picture the end product in your mind. Therefore, we have delved deep into this topic and tried to find out the answer for you!

Step 1: Counting The Number Of Words In The Document

The first step towards accomplishing this seemingly complex but straightforward task is to begin by counting the number of words present in the word file. This can be done by simply looking down at the page, where on the left side, the exact number of word count is mentioned clearly and concisely.

This acts as the first step towards counting your page number and will be crucial in the later stages mentioned in this article.

Step 2: Deciding On What The Size Of The Book’s Trim Will Be

Books are available in several sizes in the market. It entirely depends on the whim of the publisher and the writer to choose a specific size that they deem fit for their book.

However, there is a standard size that you can follow as a guideline. For example, most publishers prefer the trim size to be 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches for books belonging to the genre fiction.

On the other hand, books based on reality or do not belong to the fiction genre usually have sizes somewhere around six by 9 inches. Once you have decided what the trim size of your book will be, you can move on to the next step.

To put things, if you want your book to be minor, you can choose the fiction size, and if you would prefer a larger one, you should go for the non-fiction size.

Step 3: Choosing The Font Size

The next important step in this journey is choosing the size of the font. Depending on the size of the font you will choose, the writing might take up smaller or more prominent space in the book. We have prepared this article considering some of the most common font sizes, which are 10, 11, and 12 pt, respectively.

Step 4: Formula To Calculate The Number Of Pages

Once you are done with all the previous steps and are well aware of the word count on the document, the book’s desired brim size, and finally, the font size, you are ready to make your final calculation. Depending on the chosen brim size of your book, you can use any of the formulas given below:

For Font Size Measuring 12

If you have opted for this particular font size for your book, you will need to divide the number of words on your document by different numbers on the basis of the brim size of the book. For example, if your book’s brim size has the standard size of 5 by 8 inches, you should divide the number of words in your file by 300.

You need to do this division using 350 as a divisor if your brim size belongs to the 5.5 by 8.5 inches category. And lastly, if you have chosen the largest size for your book, measuring 6 by 9 inches, you should complete the division of the word count by dividing it by 425.

For Font Size Measuring 11

Now, if your font size is one degree smaller and measures 11 pt, you have to do the divisions differently. For a brim size measuring 5 by 8 inches, the word count needs to be divided by 350. Similarly, use the number 425 as the divisor when the size of the brim of the book measures 5.5 by 8.5 inches.

And for the largest size equivalent to 6 by 9 inches, use 500 to complete the calculation.

For Font Size Measuring 10

In this case, for brim sizes measuring 5 by 8 inches, the number 400 is the divisor you are looking for to divide the number of words by. For book brim size having the dimensions 5.5 by 8.5 inches, the number 475 should be the divisor.

Lastly, for a brim size of 6 by 9 inches, you need to divide the total number of phrases in the document by the divisor 600.

On The Occasion Of Image Input

We often input different kinds of figures, diagrams, and images on our word documents to make the writing more illustrative. The inclusion of an image changes the calculation that we might have done before since it takes up some additional space. However, there is no reason to worry at all.

We have found a solution to estimate the number of pages that include images too. For making the calculation, you first have to determine how you are going to place the image in the document.

Are you going to place it in a way that encompasses the entire page? Or will it only cover half of the page? You might also choose to keep it smaller, such as roughly 1/4th of the page.

Depending on the size of the image, you can easily calculate the number of pages it will take to print the book. For a full-sized picture, an entire page will have to be given up just for the image. So the higher the number of full-sized pictures, the greater the number of pages.

If the images occupy half of the page, the writings will require half a more page to be printed. Lastly, smaller images will only occupy a quarter of a page, so putting 5 smaller images will require you 1.25 additional pages.

Number Of Pages For Different Word Counts: Examples

In this part of the article, we have included several examples for you to understand the application of the formula provided above easily. It will also help you make a direct count if your word file matches the examples illustrated here.

For instance, if you decide to put up single spacing as the spacing setting in your file, printing a document containing 20,000 to 21000 words will generally result in 40-42 pages. And if you opt for double spacing, you will require double the number of pages.

If you have written 50-52,000 words, you will need 100-104 pages to print the document. This will be the case if your spacing is single. But on the occasion of choosing double spacing, you will definitely require 100 pages more. And the count will increase if the file contains any images or pictures.

Lastly, if you have written 100,000 words, you will need about 200 pages to print the document, given that the spacing is selected to be single. In the case of double spacing, the page numbers will double and come down to 400 pages.

This counting stands if your chosen font is Times New Roman, with the standard font size of 12.

Size of Novels

Usually, novels are thick and contain a word count beyond 60,000. Therefore, to print such a book, you will need around 120 pages for single spacing. And if you opt for double spacing, the page count will double to 240 pages.

Document Formatting Considered For This Article

As we all know, Microsoft Word comes with different specifications and settings that a writer can use according to his preference. You will get to enjoy various fonts here, different color palettes, and various spacing and margin modifications. Depending on this, your page size may vary.

For this particular article, we have taken into consideration the most standard formatting, which usually is the default setting present in MS Word. The margin size we have considered here measured uniform on all sides except the one at the top.

We also chose single spacing and the Serif Typeface, as this is the typical typeface used in the case of manuscripts.

The count estimation for certain formal pages like the cover, acknowledgment, and appendix might differ in reality since these pages use a lot of spacing in between the words and don’t use general formatting.

Conclusion

We hope this article was able to answer your question about how many Microsoft word pages equal a book page.

Before you take our word as gospel, we want to give one disclaimer that this article is a gross estimation keeping the standard formatting in mind. If you decide to select exceptional modifications to your word document, the number of printed pages might come out to be different.

Calculate book page countWondering how many Word pages equal a book page? You can easily calculate book page count using the word count from your Word document. We’ll explain two easy methods to calculate book page count: 1) use one of our simple formulas as a book page count calculator, or 2) use our InDesign template to experiment with book trim size and type size to accurately determine a page count for books. Use whichever method is easiest for you.

You’ll use the word count in your Word document to calculate book page count. First of all, find your word count in Word by opening your document and looking at the bottom left of your screen:

Find your word count in Word.

Once you know your word count, follow one of our two methods below to estimate your page count.

Method 1: Use our formulas

We’ve typeset many books and therefore know how to calculate the number of words that fit on an average book page. Our formulas are based on book trim size, typeface, and type size. Here are the steps to using our formulas:

Choose your book’s trim size

The trim size of your book dictates approximately how many words fit on one page, so start by choosing a trim size. Some popular trim sizes for books are:

Fiction – 5″ × 8″ or 5.5″ × 8.5″
Nonfiction – 6″ × 9″

What about trim sizes for larger format books? Look at any book and you’ll see that the text never goes to the edges of the pages. It’s all contained within the margins, forming a text block. Most larger format books use the same size text blocks as regular fiction and nonfiction books so that they’re easy to read. For a larger format book, use the 6″ × 9″ formula to calculate book page count.

Formulas to calculate book page count

Find the trim size of your book below, then use the formula for the type size you envision for your book. We created the formulas by setting 10,000 words in Minion (a commonly used serif typeface that comes with InDesign), and using the page margins recommended in Book Design Made Simple (0.75″ on all sides except 0.85″ at the top).

To calculate the page count for a 5″ × 8″ book:

  • 10 pt type – divide your word count by 400
  • 11 pt type – divide your word count by 350
  • 12 pt type – divide your word count by 300

To calculate the page count for a 5.5″ × 8.5″ book:

  • 10 pt type – divide your word count by 475
  • 11 pt type – divide your word count by 425
  • 12 pt type – divide your word count by 350

To calculate the page count for a 6″ × 9″ book:

  • 10 pt type – divide your word count by 600
  • 11 pt type – divide your word count by 500
  • 12 pt type – divide your word count by 425

Calculate the number of pages in your front and back matter

There are probably some pages that are not included in your word count, such as pages in your front and back matter. Look through the following list of front and back matter pages and make a note of the number of pages you’ll require for your front and back matter:

Half title, title page, copyright page, dedication, quote or epigraph, contents, list of illustrations, foreword, preface, acknowledgements, introduction, appendix(es), endnotes, glossary, bibliography, references, index(es).

The image below from Book Design Made Simple explains the order of pages for your front and back matter.

Calculate book page count

This excerpt from pages 24 and 25 of Book Design Made Simple should help you estimate the length of your front and back matter.

Calculate the number of pages your images will require

In addition to text, you may also include illustrations, photos, diagrams, charts, and tables in your book. An easy way to estimate the number of pages your images will require is to count them according to how much space they’ll use. For example:

5 full-page images = 5 pages
20 half-page images = 10 pages
4 quarter-page images = 1 page
Total pages required for images: 16 pages

Calculate extra pages based on number of chapters and parts/sections

Chapters don’t usually begin at the top of a page, nor do they usually end at the bottom of a page. Therefore you should allow half a page extra for each chapter in your book. For example, if your book has 14 chapters, add 7 pages to your page count.

If your book is divided into parts or sections, you’ll probably add a part or section divider page (followed by a blank) between each part or section. So for each part or section in your book, add 2 pages to your book page count.

Calculate your book page count

Add together the following totals to get the final page count for your book:

Number of pages for word count (from formulas above): _______
Number of pages for front and back matter: ________
Number of pages for images: ________
Number of pages for chapters and part/section dividers: ________

Total number of pages estimated for your book: ________

#Indieauthors, need to calculate your #book page count using your manuscript’s word count? We explain two methods: using a simple math formula or our #InDesign template. https://goo.gl/Dfy8cm Click To Tweet

Method 2: Use our InDesign template

You can estimate your page count the same way we calculated the formulas listed above—by using your book’s trim size, typeface, and type size in an actual InDesign document. Of course, you’ll need InDesign to use this template. If you don’t have InDesign, you can download it for a free one-week trial or use it at your local library.

Download our InDesign template by clicking here:
InDesign Template for Estimating Page Count

This template is set to the specifications we guide you through in Book Design Made Simple (i.e., trim size 5.5″ × 8.5″, tx paragraph style with Minion Regular, 11 pt type size with 14 pt leading). And the template includes the first 10,000 words of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Set the trim size and type specs to whatever you wish (see instructions below), and see how many pages the text runs to. Then use the following formula to calculate the average number of words per page:

10,000 divided by number of pages = words per page

Change the trim size and type specs to suit

Experiment with our InDesign template to get an accurate page count with whatever trim size and type specs you choose. Here are some suggestions for changes you can make:

Change the trim size: First click Layout>Margins and Columns, then check the Enable Layout Adjustment Box at the bottom left. Click OK. This will ensure that the text frames stay the same size as the margins, regardless of how large or small the pages are.

Enable layout adjustment

Click File>Document Setup to open the Document Setup dialog box. Choose your new trim size by changing the numbers in the Width and Height boxes, then click OK.

Document Setup dialog box

Your pages will now have the new trim size. Note that the margins are the same distance from the edges of the pages as they were before. As a result, the size of your text frames will have changed, causing your text to reflow and your page count to change.

Change the type specs: Double-click the tx paragraph style in your Paragraph Styles panel to open the Paragraph Style Options dialog box. Select Basic Character Formats on the left as shown below. Change the Font Family, Size, and Leading (linespacing) by clicking the arrows to the right of those drop-down menus and choosing alternatives.

Calculate book page count

Make sure the Preview box at the bottom left is checked. That way you’ll see all the changes you’re making to the text in real time. Once you click OK, InDesign will finalize those changes causing your text to reflow and your page count to change.

Calculate book page count … done!

Now that you know the average number of words per page in your book, you can calculate the page count with a little arithmetic. Simply divide the total word count from your Word document by the number of words per page.

total number of words in your Word document divided by number of words per book page = your page count so far

Then add in all the extra pages for your front matter, back matter, images, chapter titles, and part/section openers (see Method 1, above).

We hope one of these two methods works quickly and easily for you! There are lots of reasons why you might need to estimate the page count for books using the word count. Now you know two sure-fire ways to calculate book page count.

When talking about book length, it’s common to talk about word count rather than page count. A typical manuscript page (8.5×11 paper, 1-inch margins, standard 11- or 12-point font, doublespaced—like you would type in Word) is considered to be 250 words. So a 25,000-word manuscript is about 100 pages.

A 100-page book would be, then, about 25,000 words; a 150-page book would be roughly 37,500 words. For the larger, 6 x 9 trim size, would be about 300 words per page. Depending on the genre, readers have different expectations about how long a book should be. Creating a book that deviates from genre criteria reduces your chances of reaching your target audience. Publishing house editors are aware of the book-length criteria and will reject your book outright if it does not meet them.

Knowing the average length for your genre might help you arrange your book’s sequence and plot arc. But how can you figure out about average book word count? And how do you figure out how much book word count should be? The length of genre books is regulated by the publishing business. We’ll go over each one in-depth.

Because books come in all sizes are they are printed with a variety of typefaces and leading, the average number of pages does not provide a clear sign of length. The number of words is the most accurate approach to determine the length.

The tool of word count is available in most writing software like MS Word, Google Docs, Grammarly, Scrivener, Ulysses, etc. You can choose a target word count, and the software will be tracking your progress and tell you when you’ve achieved it.

Since every book has a basic contract with the reader, word count is important. The genre dictates a word count for your book.

Being a writer, I realized the importance of the word count of a book. Each genre demands different word counts. Further, I am going to tell you about How many words per page in a book are suitable. Keep reading this blog to find out!

Another common question, and for most writers, the answer should be as simple as using the word count tool.

If you’re using Microsoft Word, you can use the “word count” option under “Tools.” Do you want to try something new? In Google Docs, here’s the way to discover the word count. In Scrivener, you can also keep track of how many words you’ve written.

The average single-spaced manuscript typed in the 12-point font has roughly 500 words per page, however, this varies a lot depending on how you arrange it.

Thus, in the event that you simply have an hour to compose and need to get 300 words down, you may be thinking about the number of pages 300 words rises to – the appropriate response is fewer than one! Isn’t it possible?

If you’re looking for an answer to a question like how many pages are in 50,000 words, simply divide your goal word count (50,000) by 500 (the average number of words per page). Your response is 100 pages long.

Don’t let the commas scare you. A year’s worth of fifty thousand words isn’t that much when divided into five days a week. That works out to only 193 words per day of writing!

With these word count calculators, you can easily track how much you’ve got covered.

I hope now you understand the importance of an average number of words per page and can write according to that so that your readers may want to stick to your book.

Top 3 Reasons Why Word Count Is Important In Writing a Book in 2023

While there are no hard and fast laws on how many words a book should have, there are some criteria that are highly recommended in the traditional publishing industry, particularly for first-time authors. Let’s be honest: we can’t be professional famous writers like Nicholas Sparks and J.K. Rowling and write a bestseller as our first book.

You’ll need to keep track of how many words you utilize in your first draught unless you’re self-publishing. There are three reasons why word count is important.

  • Shorter Books are more marketable.

When it comes to large books/novels, a literary agency and a traditional publisher are less likely to take a chance on a new writer. The ideal word count for an adult fiction book is the most marketable.

  • The cost of printing longer novels is higher.

Longer books necessitate a greater number of pages to be printed and the book size is increased too. Subsequently, they are costlier to print and address bigger speculation.

  • Audiences anticipate a certain number of words.

Audiences have come to expect a specific story length and page count, so an unknown author can draw in more readers by sticking inside that range.

How Long Should a Book Be in 2023?

If you’re writing your first book, the conventional rule of thumb is to keep it between 80,000 and 100,000 words. While an average words limit of 40,000 can be deemed as a book, 50,000 words are considered the minimum length. For a fiction novel, anything over 110,000 words is considered excessively long.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien has a massive word count, with the longest clocking in at almost 175,000 words. Those epic sagas are the uncommon exception to typical word count constraints, notwithstanding their continued success. In most cases, you’ll want to keep your book as brief as possible.

Inside the universe of scholarly fiction, various kinds have diverse word counts:

Thriller Book

To keep the reader involved, a good suspense thriller must keep the storyline moving. A mystery novel book structure consists of 70,000 to 90,000 words long.

Science fiction and fantasy Book

World-building is an art form in science fiction and fantasy books. This genre takes longer than others due to the requirement to create a whole new environment. The average length of a fantasy book is 90,000 to 120,000 words.

Romance Book

Not every love tale is as epic as Wuthering Heights in romance novels. Romantic stories are now more often than not entertaining and quick reads. Some are as short as 50,000 words, making them ideal beach reads. The word count for a high-end romantic novel is 100,000.

Historical fiction Book

Because fleshing out an imagined historical environment necessitates a higher word count; historical fiction is usually around 100,000 words.

Non-fiction Book

Due to the numerous subgenres, there is no fixed word count guide for nonfiction books. If you’re producing a nonfiction book, search up that genre to see how long other books in that genre are. Memoirs, for example, are commonly between 80,000 and 90,00 words long.

All of these are typical book word count ranges and should not be used to determine the exact number of words you must include in your book. We’ve all heard about outliers in each genre who were published far below or far over these word counts.

Use these figures as a starting point for your writing objectives.

Know what readers expect as far as word includes in your classification regardless of whether the reader isn’t aware of their assumptions for how long a book ought to be.

I hope now you understand what’s the ideal book size of different niches and how many words is the average book?

It’s fine whether your book is currently too long or too short.

That is the purpose of revision. Some writers including me write quickly and then have to go back and fill in the blanks. Some folks who make me jealous compose long pieces that must be edited and tightened. This is quite natural. On a first draught, very few people get it properly. What’s more, guess what? You still managed to finish a draught! OMG – rejoice, regardless of your word count!

Then, at that point, will chip away at improving it.

I’m sure you’re still trying to persuade yourself that your work can be published as is, and you’re coming up with excuses. There are always exceptions to the rule. My book club recently finished reading The Nightingale, a 167,000-word novel. Although I did not find this to be excessively long, Kristin Hannah is a bestselling author.

Before The Nightingale, she had been publishing for more than 20 years, and the rest of her books are much shorter, closer to 100,000-120,000 words, which is well within historical fiction’s range.

Novellas are also available for purchase. I recently finished rereading Susan Minot’s Rapture, which is roughly 35,000 words long and fantastic. However, a publisher would be crazy to take on a novella by a rookie author who hadn’t already been writing for publications like The New Yorker.

Yes, now and again, a book by a debut author is produced that is abnormally long or short. However, think about what happens much more oftentimes? The Powerball is won by someone. If you think you’re the happy exception and have the Midas Touch, get over to the convenience store as soon as possible, my buddy. You’ll save a ton of time thusly.

Oder Now

When should you be concerned with word count?

Don’t think about it all when you’re writing. Simply put, write. As I previously stated, the majority of first draughts will be either too long or too short (not to mention too boring or confusing or predictable, with plot holes and caricatures and flat dialogue to boot). For the love of God, they’re draughts! On revision, we clean them up.

Give word count a good hard look when you’re ready to pitch agents, small publishers, or self-publish.

Again, why raise the issue of word count if it is a red flag for agents and editors? You want to do everything you can to improve your chances because the competition is so stiff.

It may not seem fair that someone would criticize your book before reading it in its entirety, but you would do the same. Would you give a sledgehammer to the person who quotes you $999 or the one who asks for $20,000 if you were in the market for a kitchen makeover (roughly the same degree of stress and commitment as an agency taking on an author) and the market rate is $10,000?

Remember that this person is completely new to the position and has no previous experience. No way, no how. You’ll take their business card, close the door as quickly as possible, and examine the contractors who appear to know what they’re doing more closely.

When it comes to self-publishing, does the word count matter?

Both yes and no. When you self-publish, you are the boss, copyrighter and your book may be as long as you want it to be. You can call that 12,000-word piece a book, however, will pursuers feel like they got what they anticipated? Similarly, if you don’t mind paying for printing, you may self-publish a 400,000-word tome. Should you, however, do so?

Let’s think about movies for a moment because they’re a little easier to mass-produce and you’re more likely to have seen the same ones.

There are several fantastic three-hour films available. Almost none of them were written, produced, or acted in by new people. No one wants to take a chance on an unknown team’s extra-long narrative. Even when you consider most three-hour films with well-known directors and performers, many of them might have been cut in half. Did Titanic need every single scenario in which they became submerged again?

If you want to ensure that your book or ghostwriting provides the finest possible reading experience, you should edit it so that it is completely fleshed out while still being a finely written page-turner.

Fixing an excessively long book

This is the point at which authors groan and say, “OK, I’ll split it into multiple books.” This sounds like an easy way out, like padding a too-short book, but it’s not the solution.

If we’re talking about a novel or memoir, you’ll need a detailed, fulfilling story arc in which the protagonist urgently wants something, faces challenges in obtaining it, and emerges a transformed person at the conclusion.

Each following book would have to be able to stand alone and take the reader on a complete journey. You can’t just publish a chapter of a book and expect people to wait for the whole of the novel to be published later. Books can certainly be part of a series as kids books usually are, but each one has its story arc.

Breaking off in the middle of a non-fiction book is just as problematic. When an author effectively produces multiple books on a topic, they do not quit in the middle of each one. Each book has its theme or technique, or they may have taken the same concept but tweaked it for a new readership.
