‘A’ vs. ‘An’

Historic and historical: what a pair. First off, there’s the question of whether to use a or an before them. Both a and an are used, but a is far more common—as much as four times more common in American English, by some measurements—which is what you’d expect for a word that, like habit and hero, begins with an audible h.

So why do some people say «an historic» and «an historical»? Well, historic and historical differ from habit and hero in a crucial way. They have their accented, or stressed, syllable second, not first. It used to be that an initial «h» was not pronounced in many such words, which is how «an historic» and «an historical» came to be used in the first place. Both words are now, however, typically pronounced with an audible h. (A vs. an can be tricky: in fact, we’ve written an entire article about it.)

As for which word to use where, the answer is similarly complicated.

Historic vs. Historical Usage

The two words are at their core simply variants, but over 400-plus years of use, they’ve mostly settled (emphasis on «mostly») into distinct roles. Historical is the typical choice for the broad and general uses relating to history. It’s the one used to modify words like museum and society, and it’s the one found in contexts like these:

People who write about matters such as these tend to pretend that the differentiation is more absolute than it is; there are, in fact, instances to be found in which skilled writers apply one word where the other is typically found, and vice versa. Still, the distinction outlined above is a good one to follow if you want to communicate efficiently with your reader.

What is the Difference Between Historic and Historical?

In today’s post, I want to clear up any confusion you might have on the uses of historic vs. historical.

I will outline their uses and their definitions; I will provide example sentences using each word; and I will give you a handy trick to remember the difference between the two.

When to Use Historic

What does historic mean? Historic is an adjective that means famous or important in history, or potentially so.

• The signing of the Declaration of Independence was a historic moment for all of humankind.
• We are standing on a historic site; this is where the battle of Gettysburg took place.
• Authorities say a fire that destroyed a historic New Jersey synagogue appears to be accidental. –The Washington Post

In other words, a historic event is an event that has great significance. A historic building is a building that has great significance and so on and so forth.

Now that we know this, if we reexamine our example from the very beginning about the Supreme Court, we can clearly see that a landmark decision would properly be called a historic decision, since both indicate a decision of great importance and significance.

When to Use Historical

What does historical mean? Historical is also an adjective and is defined as of or relating to history; concerned with past events.

• The new law removed historical protections that were given to small businesses.
• Countless historical documents and artifacts were destroyed during the bombing of Berlin
• BBC America’s powerful new historical drama “The Last Kingdom” tells the story that made England possible, and with it the flourishing of Anglo-Saxon culture and law that underpin America as well. –The Wall Street Journal

Something that is historical is simply something that happened in the past, regardless of its significance.

As William Safire once said, “Any past event is historical, but only the most memorable ones are historic.” This is a good way to think about the difference between these two words.

Common Mistakes When Using Historic and Historical

The usual mistake involving these two words is to use historic when the writer actually means to use historical.

• There are good historic correlations between high interest rates and low rates of inflation. (Incorrect)
• There are good historical correlations between high interest rates and low rates of inflation. (Correct)

The opposite mistake is much more uncommon.

• No one expected such a historical ruling from the Supreme Court Justices. (Incorrect)
• No one expected such a historic ruling from the Supreme Court Justices. (Correct)
  

A Historic Event vs. An Historic Event

There is some conflict as to which indefinite article should precede historic/historical in a sentence. Is it a historical event or an historical event? A historic or an historic?

To answer this, we need to understand the rule regarding a vs. an, which is as follows,

• Use the article “a” when followed by a word with a consonant sound.
• Use the article “an” when followed by a word with a vowel sound.

This means that for words like hour and honor, the correct choice is “an.”

• An hour.
• An honor.

The “h” is silent in both of these words, so “an” is the appropriate choice.

This is not the case with the words historic and historical, however. Both of these words have a clear “h” sound at their beginning, so the appropriate choice is “a historic,” not “an historic.”

Trick to Remember the Difference

Here’s a trick I came up with to remember historical vs. historic. Let me know what you think.

Historical ends in an “L.” Think of this “L” as standing for a “Long time ago.” Historical events are simply events that took place in the past, regardless of their significance.

Hello,

My niece is studying big cities of Ukraine in English and I noticed that her teacher describing the centre of Lviv used «historical». I think it is a mistake.

«Lviv is a big city in Ukraine. It has narrow old streets.
Its historical centre makes Lviv the best place in our country».

I think better to use «historic» as it is likely to be important in history. «Its historic centre makes Lviv the best place in our country»
Historical is related to history, e.g. historical events.

Is it correct?

Yes, it is. I’ll quote the relevant usage note from Oxford Dictionaries for you:

Historic and historical are used in slightly different ways. Historic means ‘famous or important in history’, as in a historic occasion, whereas historical means ‘concerning history or historical events’, as in historical evidence: thus a historic event is one that was very important, whereas a historical event is something that happened in the past.

There is a village where a medieval mill is located. Understandably, that mill has became a landmark. Now is the landmark historic or historical? I just checked the OXFORD dictionary of collocations and it says both are possible. How come?

Interesting! The adjective historical appeared about 1495, 100 years before the adjective historic. Historic had appeared as a noun (a book about history) around 1560. They started to be confused, as adjectives, almost immediately.

The distinctions, if there were/are any, have been chiefly lost and may depend on whether either adjective is used attributively or predicatively and even then, the use is not regular.

One possible distinction might be in:

The two presidents came to an historic (one that creates history) agreement.
The historical (relating to the past) agreement had been that both countries could fish in the river which formed the border, the new agreement divided the river north and south with the northern country having the northern part of the river.

It is less clear (if it exists) in

The historic landscape (that exists in the present as it did in history) before you is exactly as it would have appeared to a man in the 10th century
The historical landscape (that existed only in history), which was rural, has long since gone and is now replaced by houses and factories.

The above landscape example is how I would probably use the two words, but I’m not sure that I would raise an eyebrow if they were exchanged.

(If you want another word, there is historial (belonging to history, or of history) — fortunately, it is very rare.)

My question actually stems from a grammar workbook which doesn’t have model answers:

I’m now in Egypt! I had planned this trip for so long and I was so thrilled to be able to visit this ____ (history) and mysterious country..

We are required to change the part of speech of «history» and I’m not entirely sure which to use.
