file.tex
wine
$ wget http://www.grindeq.com/store/GrindEQ_LaTeX-to-Word_2008.zip
.wine
.msoffice
$ env WINEPREFIX=~/.msoffice wine GrindEQ_LaTeX-to-Word_2008.exe
file.tex
utf8
cp1251
:
$ konwert UTF8-cp1251 file.tex > file_cp1251.tex
л
*.tex
varkappa
kappa
:
amstex

I have spent a great deal of time on the word-latex problem and have tested every solution I can dream of over the course of aboout 3 years. The GrindEQ utilities are the only thing that worked right out of the box. They generate clean latex that can be immediately compiled by TexStudio with no alterations (obviously you still might want to customize it, but you get accurate usable output right away). I have tested it on fairly complicated lecture notes for my math stats course that include zillions of more or less complex MathType equations as well as embedded graphics. I have not yet tested on multi-lingual documents. Most importantly GrindEQ runs flawlessly on 64 bit Win 10 running 64 bit Office 2016. That setup causes the closest competitor (Word-to-latex) to crash immediately, even though I think it is potentially another excellent (and slightly cheaper) option. Also, GrindEQ is blazingly fast. I haven’t made it handle graphics 100% perfectly … but I don’t mind working on that a bit. It’s an easy problem to deal with. Good luck with pandoc! That was what I would have liked to use. I’ve devoted what feels like thousands of hours over the past couple of years trying to make it happen. Pandoc will not handle MathType equations and I haven’t found a way to make it handle Tex-converted MathType either. It will only read the old MS Equation Editor stuff. I don’t know anybody who uses those. So if you wanted to pandoc Word to latex you actually need GrindEQ to back your MathType down to MS EqEditor format … which is insane. Unless you have nothing else to do with your life, and as much as I like pandoc, don’t waste your time using it for this problem. The only workable, fairly efficient and free solution is rtf2latex2e. But that means: save Word doc as rtf; then edit and run a command line batch file. Reliability on equations is about as good as GrindEQ. I suspect graphics are a bit more irritating but haven’t bothered to investigate. My advice: if it’s a one shot conversion rtf2latex2e will do almost as good a job but it’s more trouble. If your time is worth anything or you are really want to implement a workflow in which you draft in Word but publish in latex (the standard academic scenario) then GrindEQ is worth the roughly $100 price (for the Word to latex and MathType to EqEditor modules). I don’t know why I didn’t find this all out a year ago … probably was too committed to a completely open source solution. But getting stuff done is more important. Get ’em; get your work done; go drink beer … or whatever. (If it’s a one shot thing, their eval copy works 10 time before it blows up).
good luck!
