Good gun and good word

Al Capone? Irwin Corey? Ted Bessell? Robert De Niro? Willie Sutton? Apocryphal?

Dear Quote Investigator: The notorious gangster Al Capone reportedly had an odd sense of humor and joked about using coercion. Here are three versions of a saying that is attributed to him:

You get a lot more from a kind word and a gun than from a kind word alone.

You can go further with a smile and a gun, than with a smile alone.

You can get more with a kind word and a gun than with just a kind word.

I am very skeptical. Capone died in 1947, and I haven’t been able to find any expressions like this credited to him when he was alive. The famous actor Robert De Niro did utter the saying in a movie when he was playing the role of Al Capone. Would you explore the origin of this saying?

Quote Investigator: QI has found no substantive evidence that Al Capone made a remark of this type. The earliest citations suggest that the line was created by a comedian named Professor Irwin Corey who performed as an eccentric academic spouting parodic erudition.

In 1953 the trade journal “Variety” published a transcript of an NBC radio broadcast presenting a “survey of humor, down through the ages”. Corey appeared as a comical Hamlet-like character. Emphasis added by QI:[1] 1953 July 29, Variety, Survey of Humor: Double-Talk Hamlet, Start Page 36, Quote Page 51, Column 2, Published by Variety Inc., New York. (ProQuest Variety Archive)

I have a simple philosophy which is poignant. Shoot a point, point blank, unsubtle, simple, poignant. My philosophy is you can get more with a kind word and a gun than with just a kind word.

Corey’s linkage of the quip to Hamlet was odd because within Shakespeare’s play Hamlet wields a sword and not a gun. However, by 1969 Corey had heightened the humor of the line by attaching the words to Al Capone.

Below are additional selected citations in chronological order including the 1969 citation.

In 1958 a Washington D.C. newspaper “The Evening Star” reported that Corey used the jest during a comedy routine:[2] 1958 October 24, The Evening Star, Midtown New York by Robert Sylvester, Quote Page A30, Column 3, Washington, D.C. (GenealogyBank)

Philosophy from Irwin Corey at the Village Vanguard: “You can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word.”

In 1962 the Seattle Daily Times of Seattle, Washington reported on an appearance by Corey at a local venue and described some of the jokes he employed:[3] 1962 July 3, Seattle Daily Times, Impeccable Educator: Prof. Irwin Corey Hits Kennedy Steel Stand! by Jack De Yonge, Quote Page 7, Column 7, Seattle, Washington. (GenealogyBank)

On his campaign to become President — “My slogan was: SOAK THE POOR. I figured we’d better get it from the poor before the rich got it.”
On philosophy—“You can get more with a KIND WORD — and a gun — than just with a kind word.”

In 1966 the syndicated column of the “Hollywood Reporter” noted that Ted Bessell, a television actor in a popular sitcom, deployed the quip. The words were not credited to Capone:[4] 1966 December 14, Arizona Republic, Hollywood Reporter: Beatty Makes Hit in Dallas by Mike Connolly’s Staff, Quote Page 36, Column 4, Phoenix, Arizona. (NewspaperArchive)[5] 1966 December 14, Marietta Daily Journal (Marietta Journal), Producer-Actor Beatty Makes Good Impression by Mike Connolly, Quote Page 8B, Column 4, Marietta, Georgia. (GenealogyBank)

Ted Bessell, on his set of “That Girl,” has your thought for the day: You can get more with a kind word—and a gun—than you can with a kind word.

In 1968 a short article printed in a Pennsylvanian newspaper reported that an unnamed comic used the expression during a television broadcast. The joke was not yet connected to a gangster in this instance:[6] 1968 April 3, Leader-Times (Kittanning Simpson Leader Times), “Is Foreign Policy Comic?”, Quote Page 6, Column 1, Kittanning, Pennsylvania. (NewspaperArchive)

Did you hear the television comic the other night:
“You can get more with a kind word, and a gun, than you can get with just a kind word.”

In July 1969 the popular widely-distributed newspaper-supplement “Parade Magazine” published “My Favorite Jokes by Professor Irwin Corey” which included a profile of Corey together with a collection of humorous remarks. This article is the first located by QI that tentatively and satirically assigned the jest to Al Capone:[7] 1969 July 13, Sunday Advocate (Advocate), Section: Parade Magazine (Sunday Supplement), My Favorite Jokes by Professor Irwin Corey, Quote Page, 18, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (GenealogyBank)[8] 1969 July 13, Wichita Eagle, Section: Parade Magazine (Sunday Supplement), My Favorite Jokes by Professor Irwin Corey, Quote Page, 18, Wichita, Kansas. (GenealogyBank)

I think it was Al Capone who once said: “You can get more with a kind word and a gun than with just a kind word.”

In August 1969 a variant of the expression was printed in a Brooklyn, New York periodical. The ascription to Capone was treated seriously:[9] 1969 August 30, Weekly People, Our own past shows that for well-being the control of production is necessary by John P. Quinn, Quote Page 5, Column 4, Brooklyn, New York. (Old Fulton)

It is said of Al Capone that he always claimed that the best way to get along was with a “kind word and a gun, especially a gun.”

In October 1970 a newspaper in Iowa printed the statement and credited Capone:[10] 1970 October 4, Waterloo Sunday Courier (Waterloo Daily Courier), Thoughts While Viewing, Quote Page 43, Column 1, Waterloo, Iowa. (NewspaperArchive)

It was Al Capone who once said, “You can get more with a kind word and a gun than with just a kind word.”

In November 1970 the expression was published with a tentative ascription to Capone in a Wisconsin newspaper:[11]1970 November 21, Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, “Look to Good, Clean Land: The Notebook” by Emilie Russert (Women’s Editor), Quote Page 12, Column 7, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. … Continue reading

I think it was Al Capone who said “You can get more with a kind word and a gun than with just a kind word.”

In 1972 an economist was quoted using the expression in Time magazine. The topic was wage and price controls and Capone was credited:[12] 1972 February 14, Time, Time Essay: The Future of Free Enterprise by Donald Morrison, Time, Inc., New York. (Online Time magazine Archive; accessed content.time.com on October 31, 2013)

Says Walter Heller, a member of TIME’S Board of Economists: “Things will never be the same again. Even after controls are lifted, there will be the threat of their reimposition. As Al Capone put it: ‘You can get so much farther with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone.’”

In 1974 “Parade Magazine” published “My Favorite Jokes by Jim Gannon & Wil Gerstenblatt”, and the comedy team mentioned a variant of the jest attributed to Capone:[13] 1974 September 1, Springfield Union, Section: Parade Magazine (Sunday Supplement), My Favorite Jokes by Jim Gannon & Wil Gerstenblatt, Quote Page 12, Springfield, Massachusetts. (GenealogyBank)

We leave you with some of Al Capone’s wisdom: You can always get somewhere with a kind word and a gun.

In 1977 the economist Heller was quoted in a Boston, Massachusetts newspaper, but this time he used the word “smile” instead of the phrase “kind word”:[14] 1977 January 8, Boston Herald American (Boston Herald), Carter adviser outlines steps to halt inflation, Quote Page 8, Column 5, Boston, Massachusetts. (GenealogyBank)

Commenting on Carter’s potential coercive powers for dealing with the spiral, Heller quoted the depression era gangster Al Capone, “You can go further with a smile and a gun, than with a smile alone.”

In 1979 the language maven William Safire writing in the New York Times stated that the saying was used by an economic adviser who ascribed the words to Capone:[15] 1979 September 24, New York Times, ESSAY: Rejected Counsel Returns by William Safire, Quote Page A19, New York. (ProQuest)

One of Mr. Kennedy’s eminent economic advisers, when in a facetious mood on the subject of incomes policy, likes to recall an aphorism attributed to the gangster Al Capone: “You get a lot more from a kind word and a gun than from a kind word alone.”

In 1987 the film “The Untouchables” was released, and it dramatized the conflict between Al Capone and a team led by government agent Eliot Ness. During a scene with journalists Al Capone played by Robert DeNiro replied to a question about his reputation for using violence with these words:[16]YouTube video, Title: “The Untouchables (1/10) Movie CLIP – A Kind Word and a Gun (1987) HD”, Uploaded on October 6, 2011, Uploaded by: movieclips, (Quotation starts at 1 minute 12 … Continue reading

I grew up in a tough neighborhood, and we used to say you can get further with a kind word and a gun, than you can with just a kind word; and in that neighborhood it might have been true.

In modern times, another famous criminal sometimes receives credit for the saying. A 1988 business book titled “Changing The Game: The New Way To Sell” ascribed the quip to the bank robber Willie Sutton:[17] 1988, Changing The Game: The New Way To Sell by Larry Wilson with ‎Hersch Wilson, Quote Page 264, A Fireside Book: Simon & Schuster, New York. (Google Books Preview)

Willy Sutton said it best. Willy was one of the world’s great management strategists. He was also one of the world’s greatest bank robbers. Willy’s management philosophy: “You can influence more people and get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.”

The important reference work “The Yale Book of Quotations” (2006) included a note of commentary about this quotation. The editor pointed out that a 1980 book had linked the statement to the entertainer Irwin Corey:[18] 2006, The Yale Book of Quotations by Fred R. Shapiro, Section: Al Capone, Page 130, Yale University Press, New Haven. (Verified on paper)

Usually associated with Capone, but Paul Dickson, The Official Explanations (1980), attributes to Irwin Corey, “You can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word.”

In conclusion, QI hypothesizes that this quip was crafted by the humorist Professor Irwin Corey by 1953. Further, QI believes that Corey fabricated the ascription to Al Capone by 1969 to enhance the comical effect and with no real intention to deceive. Nevertheless, the attribution was taken seriously, and today the expression is often incorrectly attributed to Capone.

(Great thanks to researcher Barry Popik who located the 1953 citation and other helpful citations.)

Update History: On August 23, 2016 citations dated 1953 and 1958 were added.

…than you can with a smile alone.”

This quote and its many variations are widely attributed to Al Capone, Chicago’s most famous gangster.

Unfortunately, it was likely invented by journalists—or perhaps a Seattle comedian—back in 1962.

A journalist could have done it easily.  Capone loved reporters and quipped for them constantly, and I’m sure some of them wouldn’t have been above attributing a phrase or two to the Big Fellow for the sake of good copy—especially since his views on gang violence didn’t exactly jive with the image of a bloodthirsty gangster.  In fact, if you were to open a newspaper in the 1920s you were much more likely to find Capone insisting that he was just the opposite.

Capone had inherited his former boss Johnny Torrio’s attitude towards violence as something to be used sparingly.  While he wouldn’t hesitate to strike back, he often tried to find a peaceful solution first.  This isn’t that surprising, as his mentor Torrio is usually credited with putting the “organized” in “organized crime” in Chicago.  After Torrio left, Capone often acted as a mediator between gangs when violence flared up on Chicago’s streets.  He saw himself as a businessman who was just trying to make a living—which is pretty hard if people are always trying to shoot you.  As time went on, he got more and more sick of it and he’d take the opportunity to tell the papers this every chance he got.  A quote he gave in a newspaper interview illustrates his position pretty well:

“I don’t want to die.  I especially don’t want to die in the street, punctured by machine gun fire.  That’s the reason I’ve asked for peace.  I’ve begged those fellows to put away their pistols and talk sense.  They’ve all got families, too.  I know I’ve tried since the first pistol was drawn in this fight to show them that there’s enough business for all of us without killing each other like animals in the street…but they don’t see it.”

Chicago’s toughest gangster pleading for everyone to just stop the violence?  Not exactly great copy for the papers.  It might have been tempting to put other words in his mouth—ones that reporters felt someone like him should have said.  But combing through Chicago newspaper archives is useless.  There are no period newspaper clips, interviews, or radio broadcasts.  Historians haven’t found a thing.

Yet, even today if you crack open a”famous quotes” book or just pop it all into Google, pretty much everyone attributes this quote directly to Al Capone.

So where did it come from?

The website Quote Investigator may have the answer.  According to a November 2013 post, this quote may have originated with a comedian named Irwin Corey in 1962, who was quoted in the Seattle Daily Times of Seattle as saying “you can get more with a KIND WORD–and a gun–than with just a kind word.”  By 1969, he had tacked on the Al Capone bit to improve the joke.  After that, everyone seemed to run with it.  By the early 1970s everyone was contributing this quote to Big Al, from actors to economists to newspaper articles.  It was finally cemented into the public consciousness when Robert DeNiro said a similar line in 1978’s The Untouchables while acting as Al Capone: “I grew up in a tough neighborhood, and we used to say you can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word; and in that neighborhood it might have been true.”

You can read the rest of the Quote Investigator article here.  It’s pretty interesting: http://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/11/03/kind-gun/

And if you’re wondering why I’ve referenced this quote in my blog title even though it’s inaccurate, it’s because the tough, cynical attitude it espouses seems to fit very well with Chicago in the 1920s.  In the end it was just too good to pass up! 🙂

Let us hope our weapons are never needed… Do not forget what the common people of this nation knew when they demanded the Bill of Rights. ~ Edward Abbey

A firearm is a portable gun (a barreled ranged weapon) that inflicts damage on targets by launching one or more projectiles driven by rapidly expanding high-pressure gas produced chemically by exothermic combustion (deflagration) of propellant within an ammunition cartridge.

By… our readiness to allow arms to be purchased at will and fired at whim; by allowing our movie and television screens to teach our children that the hero is one who masters the art of shooting and the technique of killing; by allowing all of these developments, we have created an atmosphere in which violence and hatred have become popular pastimes. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
The majority falls prey to the delusion, popular in some circles, that ordinary people are too careless and stupid to own guns, and we would be far better off leaving all weapons in the hands of professionals on the government payroll. All too many of the other great tragedies of history, Stalin’s atrocities, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Holocaust, to name but a few, were perpetrated by armed troops against unarmed populations. “People were allowed to own guns, and everyone did own guns [in the West], for the most part. Having a firearm to protect yourself in the lawless wilderness from wild animals, hostile native tribes, and outlaws was a wise idea. But when you came into town, you had to either check your guns if you were a visitor or keep your guns at home if you were a resident. ~ Adam Winkler
I’ve never seen any rhetoric from that time period saying that the only thing that’s going to reduce violence is more people with guns. It seems to be much more of a 20th-century attitude than one associated with the Wild West. ~ Adam Winkler
Give a guy a gun, he thinks he’s Superman. Give him two and he thinks he’s God. ~ Barry Wong and John Woo
If the white man doesn’t want the black man buying rifles and shotguns, then let the government do its job. […] If he’s not going to do his job in running the government and providing you and me with the protection that our taxes are supposed to be for, since he spends all those billions for his defense budget, he certainly can’t begrudge you and me spending $12 or $15 for a single-shot, or double-action. ~ Malcolm X
«Games today are very, very real. It’s the weapons; it’s the story lines, you know, that people get caught up in — even the optics that are used on the guns, it says L-3 EOTech. Dear friends, on 9 October 2012, the Taliban shot me on the left side of my forehead. They shot my friends, too. They thought that the bullets would silence us, but they failed. And out of that silence came thousands of voices. The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions. But nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born. I am the same Malala. My ambitions are the same. My hopes are the same. And my dreams are the same. Dear sisters and brothers, I am not against anyone. Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban or any other terrorist group. I am here to speak for the right of education for every child. I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me. ~ Malala Yousafzai
Even if there was a gun in my hand and he was standing in front of me, I would not shoot him. This is the compassion I have learned from Mohamed, the prophet of mercy, Jesus Christ and Lord Buddha. This the legacy of change I have inherited from Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Mohammed Ali Jinnah. This is the philosophy of nonviolence that I have learned from Gandhi, Bacha Khan and Mother Teresa. And this is the forgiveness that I have learned from my father and from my mother. This is what my soul is telling me: be peaceful and love everyone. ~ Malala Yousafzai

  • The tank, the B-52, the fighter-bomber, the state-controlled police and military are the weapons of dictatorship. The rifle is the weapon of democracy. Not for nothing was the revolver called an «equalizer.» Egalite implies liberte. And always will. Let us hope our weapons are never needed — but do not forget what the common people of this nation knew when they demanded the Bill of Rights: An armed citizenry is the first defense, the best defense, and the final defense against tyranny.

When echoes of the fusillade fade away, thirteen bodies are sprawled on the ground.  Nine students are wounded.  Four are dead—Allison Krause, Bill Schroeder, Sandra Scheuer, and Jeffrey Miller.  Of the thirteen who were shot, only two have been hit frontally.  Seven have bullets in their sides and four in their backs, proving they were not advancing but fleeing.

One young guardsman is horrified by the spectacle.  Falling to the ground and tossing hysterically, he cries out, «I just shot two teenagers!»  The other guardsmen march off up the hill, leaving the dead and wounded behind.

  • The laws of [false utility] are those which forbid to wear arms, disarming those only who are not disposed to commit the crime which the laws mean to prevent. Can it be supposed, that those who have the courage to violate the most sacred laws of humanity, and the most important of the code, will respect the less considerable and arbitrary injunctions, the violation of which is so easy, and of so little comparative importance? Does not the execution of this law deprive the subject of that personal liberty, so dear to mankind and to the wise legislator?

  • The firepower wielded by organised crime groups in Mexico has not only led to mounting instability in the US’s southern neighbour, but also contributed to lawlessness on the two countries’ shared border and the deaths of American agents. As the U.S. invests millions in Mexico’s security through the Merida initiative, it does itself a disservice by allowing lax gun regulation to arm the same groups it is trying to combat. Poor gun regulation and oversight also threatens the U.S. by providing potential terrorists with easy access to military grade weapons, as was boasted by American-born al-Qaida member Adam Gadahn in a recent video.

  • It is a cliche that the gun is a penis-symbol as well as a weapon. Gun organizations are conventionally masculine in cultural style; hunting and gun magazines dress their models in check shirts and boots to emphasize their masculinity. The gun lobby hardly has to labour the inference that politicians trying to take away our guns are emasculating us. At both symbolic and practical levels, the defense of gun ownership is a defense of hegemonic masculinity.

  • Every black person in America should get a gun and join the National Rifle Association, America’s oldest and most august civil rights organization. Apparently this has occurred to no one because our excellent public education system ensures that no American under the age of sixty has the slightest notion of this country’s history. Gun control laws were originally promulgated by Democrats to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. This allowed the Democratic policy of slavery to proceed with fewer bumps and, after the Civil War, allowed the Democratic Ku Klux Klan to menace and murder black Americans with little resistance. Contrary to what illiterates believe, the KKK was an outgrowth of the Democratic Party, with overlapping membership rolls. The Klan was to the Democrats what the American Civil Liberties Union is today. Not every Democrat is an ACLU’er, but every ACLU’er is a Democrat. Same with the Klan.
    • Ann Coulter, as quoted in «Negroes With Guns» (18 April 2012), by A. Coulter, Ann Coulter.
  • In 1640, the very first gun control law ever enacted on these shores was passed in Virginia. It provided that blacks, even freemen, could not own guns. Chief Justice Roger Taney’s infamous opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford circularly argued that blacks could not be citizens because if they were citizens, they would have the right to own guns: «[I]t would give them the full liberty,» he said, «to keep and carry arms wherever they went.» With logic like that, Republicans eventually had to fight a Civil War to get the Democrats to give up slavery. Alas, they were Democrats, so they cheated. After the war, Democratic legislatures enacted ‘Black Codes’, denying black Americans the rights of citizenship, such as the rather crucial one of bearing arms, while other Democrats, sometimes the same Democrats, founded the Ku Klux Klan. For more than a hundred years, Republicans have aggressively supported arming blacks, so they could defend themselves against Democrats. The original draft of the Anti-Klan Act of 1871, passed at the urging of Republican president Ulysses S. Grant, made it a federal felony to ‘deprive any citizen of the United States of any arms or weapons he may have in his house or possession for the defense of his person, family, or property’. This section was deleted from the final bill only because it was deemed both beyond Congress’ authority and superfluous, inasmuch as the rights of citizenship included the right to bear arms. Under authority of the Anti-Klan Act, President Grant deployed the U.S. military to destroy the Klan, and pretty nearly completed the job. But the Klan had a few resurgences in the early and mid-20th century. Curiously, wherever the Klan became a political force, gun control laws would suddenly appear on the books. This will give you an idea of how gun control laws worked.
    • Ann Coulter, as quoted in «Negroes With Guns» (18 April 2012), by A. Coulter, Ann Coulter.
  • Following the firebombing of his house in 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King, who was, among other things, a Christian minister, applied for a gun permit, but the Alabama authorities found him unsuitable. A decade later, he won a Nobel Peace Prize. How’s that ‘may issue’ gun permit policy working for you? The NRA opposed these discretionary gun permit laws and proceeded to grant NRA charters to blacks who sought to defend themselves from Klan violence, including the great civil rights hero Robert F. Williams. A World War II Marine veteran, Williams returned home to Monroe, N.C., to find the Klan riding high, beating, lynching and murdering blacks at will. No one would join the NAACP for fear of Klan reprisals. Williams became president of the local chapter and increased membership from six to more than 200. But it was not until he got a charter from the NRA in 1957 and founded the Black Armed Guard that the Klan got their comeuppance in Monroe. Williams’ repeated thwarting of violent Klan attacks is described in his stirring book, Negroes With Guns. In one crucial battle, the Klan seiged the home of a black physician and his wife, but Williams and his Black Armed Guard stood sentry and repelled the larger, cowardly force. And that was the end of it. As the Klan found out, it’s not so much fun when the rabbit’s got the gun. The NRA’s proud history of fighting the Klan has been airbrushed out of the record by those who were complicit with the KKK, Jim Crow and racial terror, to wit, the Democrats.

  • From the first I saw no chance of bettering the condition of the freedman until he should cease to be merely a freedman and should become a citizen. I insisted that there was no safety for him or for anybody else in America outside the American government; that to guard, protect, and maintain his liberty the freedman should have the ballot; that the liberties of the American people were dependent upon the ballot-box, the jury-box, and the cartridge-box; that without these no class of people could live and flourish in this country; and this was now the word for the hour with me, and the word to which the people of the North willingly listened when I spoke. Hence, regarding as I did the elective franchise as the one great power by which all civil rights are obtained, enjoyed, and maintained under our form of government, and the one without which freedom to any class is delusive if not impossible, I set myself to work with whatever force and energy I possessed to secure this power for the recently-emancipated millions.

  • The ease with which birds and beasts, men, women and children, can now be shot into sudden oblivion is breathtaking. If the murderer had nothing but his hands, he could kill only a few on a single outing, if lucky. But a victim might fight back, and win. What a limitation, a frustration, for the poor murderer. But with a Kalashnikov – joy! – all such frustration vanishes. In a few seconds dozens of human beings can be left twitching and bleeding on the ground, their possibilities, hopes, loves and endeavours abruptly and arbitrarily obliterated, their families drowned in shock and grief. • By… our readiness to allow arms to be purchased at will and fired at whim; by allowing our movie and television screens to teach our children that the hero is one who masters the art of shooting and the technique of killing; by allowing all of these developments, we have created an atmosphere in which violence and hatred have become popular pastimes.

  • The majority falls prey to the delusion, popular in some circles, that ordinary people are too careless and stupid to own guns, and we would be far better off leaving all weapons in the hands of professionals on the government payroll. But the simple truth, born of experience, is that tyranny thrives best where government need not fear the wrath of an armed people… A revolt by Nat Turner and a few dozen other armed blacks could be put down without much difficulty; one by four million armed blacks would have meant big trouble. All too many of the other great tragedies of history, Stalin’s atrocities, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Holocaust, to name but a few, were perpetrated by armed troops against unarmed populations. Many could well have been avoided or mitigated, had the perpetrators known their intended victims were equipped with a rifle and twenty bullets apiece, as the Militia Act required here. … If a few hundred Jewish fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto could hold off the Wehrmacht for almost a month with only a handful of weapons, six million Jews armed with rifles could not so easily have been herded into cattle cars.

  • Gun safety laws, there are a few inconvenient facts… Liberals are sometimes glib about equating guns and danger. In fact, it’s complicated. The number of guns in America has increased by more than 50 percent since 1993, and in that same period the gun homicide rate in the United States has dropped by half… The assault weapons ban. A 113-page study found no clear indication that it reduced shooting deaths for the 10 years it was in effect. That’s because the ban was poorly drafted and because even before the ban, assault weapons accounted for only 2 percent of guns used in crimes. Move on to open-carry and conceal-carry laws. With some 13 million Americans now licensed to pack a concealed gun, many liberals expected gun battles to be erupting all around us. In fact, the most rigorous analysis suggests that all these gun permits caused neither a drop in crime, as conservatives had predicted, nor a spike in killings, as liberals had expected… The fears were overblown… Liberals often inadvertently antagonize gun owners and empower the National Rifle Association by coming across as supercilious, condescending and spectacularly uninformed about the guns they propose to regulate. A classic of gun ignorance. New York passed a law three years ago banning gun magazines holding more than seven cartridges; without realizing that for most guns there is no such thing as a magazine for seven cartridges or less… If lawmakers want to pass gun legislation, they’d best learn about firearms first.

  • Hands and arms can be the fastest-moving body parts. For example, an average suspect can move his hand and forearm across his body to a 90-degree angle in 12/100 of a second. He can move his hand from his hip to shoulder height in 18/100 of a second. The average officer pulling the trigger as fast as he can on a Glock, one of the fastest- cycling semi-autos, requires 1/4 second to discharge each round. There is no way an officer can react, track, shoot and reliably hit a threatening suspect’s forearm or a weapon in a suspect’s hand in the time spans involved.

  • The upper arms move more slowly than the lower arms and hands. But shooting at the upper arms, there’s a greater chance you’re going to hit the suspect’s brachial artery or center mass, areas with a high probability of fatality. So where does shooting only to wound come in when even areas considered by some to ‘safe’ from fatality risk could in fact carry the same level of risk as targeting center mass?
“Legs tend initially to move slower than arms and to maintain more static positions. However, areas of the lower trunk and upper thigh are rich with vascularity. A suspect who’s hit there can bleed out in seconds if one of the major arteries is severed, so again shooting just to wound may not result in just wounding.

  • Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate Governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple Government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the Governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.

Since that time, other authors suggest there is increasing evidence to support the hypothesis that shock waves from high velocity bullets can cause tissue related damage and damage to the nervous system. This has been shown in various experiments using simulant models [24, 48]. • Every communist must grasp the truth, «Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.» Our principle is that the Party commands the gun, and the gun must never be allowed to command the Party. Yet, having guns, we can create Party organizations, as witness the powerful Party organizations which the Eighth Route Army has created in northern China. We can also create cadres, create schools, create culture, create mass movements. Everything in Yenan has been created by having guns. All things grow out of the barrel of a gun.

Experience in the class struggle in the era of imperialism teaches us that it is only by the power of the gun that the working class and the labouring masses can defeat the armed bourgeoisie and landlords; in this sense we may say that only with guns can the whole world be transformed. We are advocates of the abolition of war, we do not want war; but war can only be abolished through war, and in order to get rid of the gun it is necessary to take up the gun.

  • It is not generally recognized that when a high velocity missile strikes the body and moves through soft tissues, pressures develop which are measured in thousands of atmospheres. Actually, three different types of pressure change appear: (1) shock wave pressures or sharp, high pressure pulses, formed when the missile hits the body surface; (2) very high pressure regions immediately in front and to each side of the moving missile; (3) relatively slow, low pressure changes connected with the behavior of the large explosive temporary cavity, formed behind the missile. Such pressure changes appear to be responsible for what is known to hunters as hydraulic shock—a hydraulic transmission of energy which is believed to cause instant death of animals hit by high velocity bullets.

  • The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The balance of power is the scale of peace. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside. And while a single nation refuses to lay them down, it is proper that all should keep them up. Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them; for while avarice and ambition have a place in the heart of man, the weak will become a prey to the strong.

Customers are stockpiling bullets or shotgun cartridges, says Wiham Ghazi of the «Free Bird» gun shop, whose 12-gauge shotguns and .22 caliber rifles hang from gun racks on the wall of his shop, emanating a faint scent of gun oil. «It’s our culture that people keep guns in their houses — it’s inherited from our grandfathers,» says Mr. Ghazi, sorting through an array of pistol bullets. Among the ammunition selection is a 12.7mm bullet for a heavy machine gun, with the red-painted tip of a tracer that burns bright as it flies.

«People are buying these kinds of guns just to protect themselves, in case of conflict,» Ghazi says, adding that one customer Saturday morning came in looking for bullets for his father’s .45 caliber pistol, which had been «put aside for years.»

The bad news, however, is that Clinton’s victory proved to be so costly to him and to his party that it stands as an enduring cautionary tale in Washington about the political dangers of taking on the issue of gun control.

  • For men know that throughout all the prior ages of history the bottom line in male-female relationships has always been woman’s need for male protection. Women could not live alone for fear of predation by males. So they lived with a male protector and accepted his dictation of their role, either as a condition of receiving his protection, or because he would impose it upon them by physical force, or both. Access to firearms gives women, for the first time in history, the capacity to live independently and apart from men in safety and freedom.

  • Why would an ultimately factual question about the consequences of gun control laws divide people along ideological lines? Only if at least one set of people were more devoted to their vision than to the facts. This shows up when gun control zealots are asked whether whatever new law they propose would have prevented the shooting rampage that they are using as a stage from which to propose a new clampdown on gun ownership. Almost always, the new law being proposed would not have made the slightest difference. That too is part of the farce. A deadly farce. So is the automatic assertion that whoever engaged in a shooting rampage was a madman. Yet these supposedly crazy shooters are usually rational enough to choose some «gun-free zone» for their murderous attacks. They seem more rational than gun control zealots who keep creating more ‘gun-free zones’. Gun control zealots are almost always people who are lenient toward criminals, while they are determined to crack down on law-abiding citizens who want to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones.
    • Thomas Sowell, «The ‘Gun Control’ Farce» (13 October 2015), Jewish World Review.
  • The grand illusion of zealots for laws preventing ordinary, law-abiding people from having guns is that «gun control» laws actually control guns. In a country with many millions of guns, not all of them registered, this is a fantasy and a farce. Guns do not vanish into thin air because there are gun control laws. Guns — whether legal or illegal — can last for centuries. Passing laws against guns may enable zealots to feel good about themselves, but at the cost of other people’s lives. Why anyone would think that criminals who disobey other laws, including laws against murder, would obey gun control laws is a mystery. A disarmed population makes crime a safer occupation and street violence a safer sport.
    • Thomas Sowell, «The ‘Gun Control’ Farce: Part II» (14 October 2015), Jewish World Review.
  • Almost invariably, mass shootings occur in gun-free settings. Yet gun control zealots seem determined to create more gun-free settings. How often have supposedly mentally unbalanced shooters opened fire at a meeting of the National Rifle Association? They are apparently not that mentally unbalanced. They pick places where people are not likely to shoot back. A mass shooting at a movie theater a few years ago took place at a theater farther away from where the shooter lived than other theaters in the area that were showing the very same movie. The difference was that this theater had advertised that it was a gun-free zone. Who is more mentally unbalanced, those who are doing the shooting or those who refuse to examine the facts about what kinds of places attract such shooters? Schools and religious institutions are sitting ducks, and the shootings there have gone on until someone else with a gun showed up on the scene. That is what puts an end to the carnage, not gun control laws. People who are prepared to defy the laws against murder are not very likely to be stopped by laws against guns. Only law-abiding citizens are likely to be stopped by gun control laws, and to become sitting ducks. As for facts and statistics, the only ones likely to be mentioned by gun control zealots, including the media, are those on how many people were killed by guns. How many lives were saved by guns will never make it through the ideological filters of the media, the political establishment or our educational institutions. Yet factual data on how many threats or attacks were deterred in a given year by displaying a firearm have long been available. Seldom is it necessary to actually pull the trigger to get some thug or criminal to back off and go elsewhere, often in some haste. Are the only lives that matter those that are lost, usually because there is no gun immediately available to protect them, but not the lives saved because they did have a gun at hand to protect them? Gun control zealots seem especially opposed to people being allowed to carry their guns concealed. But concealed weapons protect not only those who carry them, but also to some extent those who do not, because criminals have no way of knowing in advance who does and does not have a gun. Muggings and rapes become much more dangerous activities for criminals where many law-abiding people are allowed to carry concealed guns. It can take a lot of the fun out of being a thug.

  • What’s the dirty little secret behind ‘gun control’ in America? Here are some hints. Working forever without pay. Whipping and torture. Buying and selling of human beings. Hate. Fear. Suspicion. Terrorism. These hints recall the evil days of slavery, and post-Civil War periods of rule by terror. Those who would own human beings as slaves created ‘gun control’ laws to keep the power in their own hands. They could not keep African slaves and their American descendants under lifelong control without making sure the slaves remained unarmed. Free black people had served honorably and with distinction in the Revolutionary War. Yet under a 1792 federal law, black men could not serve as part of the state militias. In Louisiana, slaves were forbidden to use a firearm even in self-defense. In South Carolina, slaves could not possess guns without a master’s permission. Black persons, whether slave or free, had to have a license or a judge’s permission before they could carry a firearm in Florida and Delaware. For black people, guns were banned entirely in several states. Florida laws empowered white ‘citizen patrols’ to invade and search blacks’ homes for guns or other weapons. None of these policies applied, of course, to white people. After the Civil War, ‘gun control’ laws kept black people ‘in their place’. Blacks had to obtain licenses to have guns in Mississippi and Louisiana. Alabama banned all guns in 1866; for blacks. Later, Alabama and Texas placed huge taxes on the sale of handguns, which effectively banned guns for the poor. Tennessee and Arkansas banned the inexpensive handguns which were the only types that poor black people could afford. South Carolina banned all handguns, except those for police and deputies. Those American ‘gun control’ laws worked; they disarmed most black people. The Ku Klux Klan and others could freely terrorize black families without fear. Unarmed victims couldn’t shoot back. Lynch law ruled, and claimed at least 3,446 lives up through the end of the Civil Rights Movement. Gun registration. Licensing. Judicial permit. Police approval. High taxes on guns and ammunition. Selective gun bans. Total gun bans. Police ‘gun sweeps’ of private homes. Sound familiar? The ‘gun control’ lobby advocates all of these policies today. These policies historically worked in the past to disarm a targeted people. These policies will have the same effect now. Although the gun prohibitionists have dropped the race hate rhetoric, they use the tried-and-true methods of the slave owners and Klansmen. The same means must achieve the same end; control of the unarmed people. The slave owners feared that armed slaves would not long tolerate their condition. Modern politicians act like they have the same fear. Are we peaceful American citizens the modern day slaves who must be kept in our place? What do these politicians fear from an armed man who wants to defend his family from violence in a bad neighborhood? How does a woman who carries a concealed weapon while walking at night cause crime? Race-based ‘gun control’ is not ancient history. The federal Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed as a response to race riots in major cities. The GCA wasn’t passed to combat ordinary street crime or gang violence; white ‘liberal’ racism energized that law. Makers, sellers and users of firearms can derail the recent law suits and destroy ‘gun control’ by putting the gun prohibitionists on the defensive. Make them explain why they favor racism-based laws.

  • Black Americans don’t seem to care that their ancestors suffered like hell for the legal right to own and use guns. Not just in wars, but in everyday life. As slaves before the Civil War, blacks had no right to own guns. As freedmen after the Civil War, state and local laws, and outright threats from armed whites, kept them from carrying guns. That meant blacks were easy marks for ordinary criminals, for racist criminals like the Ku Klux Klan, and for political criminals that kept them disarmed and out of the voting booth. But over the decades blacks armed themselves, fought back, and eventually won the fight to own and carry guns like other Americans.

  • It has been argued that the perfection of guns of great destructive power will stop warfare. So I myself thought for a long time, but now I believe this to be a profound mistake. Such developments will greatly modify, but not arrest it. On the contrary, I think that every new arm that is invented, every new departure that is made in this direction, merely invites new talent and skill, engages new effort, offers new incentive, and so only gives a fresh impetus to further development. Think of the discovery of gun-powder. Can we conceive of any more radical departure than was effected by this innovation? Let us imagine ourselves living in that period: would we not have thought then that warfare was at an end, when the armor of the knight became an object of ridicule, when bodily strength and skill, meaning so much before, became of comparatively little value? Yet gunpowder did not stop warfare: quite the opposite it acted as a most powerful incentive.

  • It was a constant pressure among white racists to keep guns out of the hands of African-Americans, because they would rise up and revolt. The KKK began as a gun-control organization. Before the Civil War, blacks were never allowed to own guns. During the Civil War, blacks kept guns for the first time — either they served in the Union army and they were allowed to keep their guns, or they buy guns on the open market where for the first time there’s hundreds of thousands of guns flooding the marketplace after the war ends. So they arm up because they know who they’re dealing with in the South. White racists do things like pass laws to disarm them, but that’s not really going to work. So they form these racist posses all over the South to go out at night in large groups to terrorize blacks and take those guns away. If blacks were disarmed, they couldn’t fight back.

  • Last but not least, I must say this concerning the great controversy over rifles and shotguns. The only thing that I’ve ever said is that in areas where the government has proven itself either unwilling or unable to defend the lives and the property of Negroes, it’s time for Negroes to defend themselves. Article number two of the constitutional amendments provides you and me the right to own a rifle or a shotgun. It is constitutionally legal to own a shotgun or a rifle. This doesn’t mean you’re going to get a rifle and form battalions and go out looking for white folks, although you’d be within your rights—I mean, you’d be justified; but that would be illegal and we don’t do anything illegal. I am here to speak for the right of education for every child. I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me.
    • Malala Yousafzai as quoted in Malala Yousafzai delivers defiant riposte to Taliban militants with speech to the UN General Assembly, The Independent, (12 July, 2013)
  • Even if there was a gun in my hand and he was standing in front of me, I would not shoot him.

Dialogue[edit]

The Doctor: Get out of the way! Rose, get out of the way now!
Rose: No. I won’t let you do this.
The Doctor: That thing killed hundreds of people!
Rose: It’s not the one pointing the gun at me.

Misattributed[edit]

  • A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.
    • Falsely attributed to Sigmund Freud.
    • This has been sourced to General Introduction to Psychoanalysis [9] [10] [11] [12] due to a misreading of a 1990 essay by Don B. Kates [13]. The quote is Kates’ own characterization of a passage in Freud and Oppenheim, Dreams in Folklore, and not Freud’s words.
  • The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
    • Falsely attributed to Thomas Jefferson.
    • This has been sourced to «The Papers of Thomas Jefferson», asserted to have been edited by C.J. Boyd. The quote does not appear in Jefferson’s collected papers as searched in Google Print. The name of the editor is also problematic: some volumes of Jefferson’s papers were edited by Julian P. Boyd, not C.J. Boyd.

People love to imitate gun noises. Whether you’re using the voice to do it or you want to get it right in your writing, this article is for you. We’ll help you understand the best ways to describe gunshot sounds.

Which Words Can Describe The Sound Of A Gunshot?

There are some great ways to describe the sounds of a gun. Try one of the following to see which you prefer:

  • Rat-tat-tat
  • Pew pew
  • Pap pap
  • Brrrrrt
  • Boom boom
  • Bang bang
  • Kablam
  • Dut dut

gunshot sound words

The preferred version is “rat-tat-tat.” It’s a great choice for onomatopoeia because it covers a large number of gunshot sounds. Many guns sound different, and not all of the words work for every gun, but “rat-tat-tat” does a good job of bridging the gaps.

Rat-Tat-Tat

“Rat-tat-tat” is a great repeated form of onomatopoeia. The first “rat” sound is the cracking of the round once it is fired from the nozzle. The “tat” sounds are the repeatedly fired bullets that tend to come out after the first round.

  • Rat-tat-tat! The guns went wild. We were in the firing zone, and we had to get out.
  • Rat-tat-tat! What was that sound? I’m sure it came from over there, but I don’t want to find out.
  • Rat-tat-tat! Oh, wow! That went right over my head! I need to move away from here before I’m put in more danger.

Pew Pew

“Pew pew” is the generic sound we use for laser guns. Many sci-fi movie pistols and rifles will imitate the “pew pew” sound. It’s also common for children to imitate this sound when they’re playing with fake guns.

“Pew pew” is perhaps the most common way to describe a gunshot. However, we didn’t include it as the best version because it works best for sci-fi guns rather than realistic ones.

  • Pew pew! The guns were blaring out. We were right in the middle of the fire.
  • Pew! Pew! I’m going to get you for that! Come back here and face my laser gun like a grown-up!
  • Pew! Pew! I’m sure he’s around here somewhere. I can’t tell where he’s firing the gun from, though.

Pap Pap

“Pap pap” works when we’re using smaller guns. Revolvers and pistols might be more likely to make a “pap” sound. It’s common for these guns because they don’t require as much power, and they’re often fired from up close rather than from large distances.

  • Pap pap went the guns. I couldn’t stick around much longer, so I had to look for a place to hide.
  • Pap pap! They kept firing into the night. I was certain that someone was going to stop them soon.
  • Pap pap! That’s what you get for challenging me! Now you’ve brought a knife to a gunfight!

Brrrrrt

“Brrrrrt” is a typical instance of onomatopoeia. It’s a collection of letters that we can use to show a specific sound. This time, “Brrrrt” works to show that someone is using a Gatling gun or machine gun (any gun that fires a lot of rounds very quickly).

We can also increase the number of “R’s” we use in the middle of the word. The more “R’s,” the longer someone is firing for.

  • Brrrrrrrt! The Gatling gun roared into action. Now nobody was going to stop the onslaught.
  • Brrrrrt! You’re no challenge for my Gatling gun! You’ll have to find a place to hide before I spot you!
  • The machine gun is on! You can hear it going “Brrrrrrrrt” across the horizon. Be ready for anything.

Boom Boom

“Boom boom” can work if you want to recreate a lower sound in a gunshot. Larger, more powerful guns typically “boom” when you fire them. You might expect to hear a sniper rifle or something large like it go “boom” when someone fires it.

  • Boom boom! The pistol shots were clearer than my own thoughts.
  • Boom boom! I’m sure that was a gunshot. We should keep moving because we don’t know who we’ll find out here.
  • Boom boom! Oh, no! It sounds like they’re getting closer! We’ve got to get away from those shots.

Bang Bang

“Bang bang” is one of the most common ways to use onomatopoeia for guns. People know that “bang” relates to someone firing a gun, which is what makes it such a good choice.

Incidentally, joke pistols often fire out little white flags with the word “Bang!” written on them. This shows how common “bang” is as an onomatopoeic choice for shooting a gun.

  • Bang bang! He shot me down! That awful sound! Bang bang!
  • Bang bang! I’m going to get you! You’ll have to keep hiding, but I’ll find you sooner or later.
  • Bang bang! You’ve been shot, daddy! Now it’s your time to try and get me!

Kablam

“Kablam” is a powerful onomatopoeia word to refer to the sound of a gunshot. We can use the powerful “K” sound to start the word, which recreates the powerful cracking that you tend to hear when a gun is fired.

  • Kablam! The guns were alive again. It wasn’t what I wanted to hear, but I knew what I needed to do.
  • Kablam! With the order, the men started firing once more. None of them agreed, but they knew they had to obey.
  • Kablam! Kablam! The sound of the dueling pistols was enough to set anyone on edge.

Dut Dut

“Dut dut” is an interesting way for us to play around with onomatopoeia. We can use it to refer to dull gunshots. This is often the sound you associate with a gunshot that’s been muffled due to distance or because it’s behind a building.

It’s a good way for you to describe the sound of a gun that you haven’t seen yet. It shows us that there is a bit of a distance between you and the danger.

  • Dut dut! I’ll get you yet! I just need to reload this quickly.
  • Dut dut! Please, don’t shoot anymore! I surrender, and I want to tell you what I know.
  • Dut dut! Did you hear that? It sounded like it came from the southern border.

To be under the weather —

Вторая версия связана с местом размещения больных моряков: во время качки всех, кому становилось плохо, отправляли «under the deck and away from the weather», то есть «под палубу, подальше от непогоды».

How did you know I was feeling so under the weather this evening? /

Pot calling the kettle black —

Both game developers accuse each other for ripping their narratives: it’s like the pot calling the kettle black.

A hot potato —

Это выражение известно с середины XIX века и связано с другим фразеологизмом — «to drop like a hot potato» (стремительно от чего-либо избавиться).

How will this crisis affect cinema production is a hot potato. /

Cat got your tongue? —

Изначально выражение звучало так: «Has the cat got your tongue?», позже его сократили до «Сat got your tongue».

You could be more enthusiastic about the launch! Cat got your tongue? /

Neck of the woods —

Welcome to my neck of the woods. /

To go pear-shaped — Пойти наперекосяк

And when the main cast left, everything with the show went pear-shaped. /

Blue in the face —

She can talk about the history of feminism till she is blue in the face. /

Thick as thieves —

Hopper definitely knows Joyce’s whereabouts but he wouldn’t tell us anything — they are as thick as thieves. /

Wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole —

They don’t want any bad publicity, so they wouldn’t touch this influencer with a barge pole. /

Heart in one’s mouth —

When they told me my flight has been postponed, I had my heart in mouth. /

Go bananas —

Everybody went bananas when all the fitness clubs in the city opened again. /

Cool as a cucumber —

The passengers worried about possible speeding ticket, yet Victor was as cool as a cucumber.
