By ARTHUR WYNNE
oday is the 90th anniversary of the world’s first crossword puzzle — invented by Arthur Wynne, an
editor for the old New York World, and published in its Sunday «Fun» section on December 21, 1913. Originally called a «word-cross,» the innovation was an immediate success and became a weekly
feature in the paper. Crosswords did not become widely known until 1924-25, when publication of the first crossword book sparked a nationwide fad.
Since the first crossword has been reprinted many times, we’re marking the anniversary by reprinting the second crossword, also by Wynne, from December 28. The puzzle is given as originally presented. The clues
are numbered by the answers’ starting and ending squares. The words NEW and YEAR have been filled in for you.
The puzzle breaks some modern rules: Three letters in the grid (not counting the Y in YEAR) are unkeyed. One answer is repeated. Two
clues are in the wrong part of speech. And part of one answer is revealed by its clue. Crosswords have come a long way in 90 years. -W.S.

These concept words help to reveal the nature of the debate over slavery. For example, although many people conceded that slavery was profoundly wrong, few were willing to campaign against it. On the other hand, some Americans whose economic success depended on slave labor were obdurate and insisted that the institution continue. One word suggests an acknowledgement of another point of view, while the other suggests a rejection of it.
