Friends the word laugh

«The One With Chandler’s Work Laugh» is the twelfth episode of the fifth season of Friends, which aired on January 21, 1999. Monica uncovers the fake laugh Chandler reserves for his boss’ bad jokes. Rachel is upset that Monica hasn’t ‘fessed up about her affair.’ Word comes of Emily’s remarriage plans.

Plot

Rachel wants to know all details about Chandler and Monica, and since Joey paid attention to none of it, she’s all over Monica at Central Perk and at home, but nothing makes her spill any beans. Ross’ ex Emily is going to marry; so he smashes a scone in a moment of anger while ranting about this, to the bewilderment of everyone who sees him do it at the coffee shop.

Chandler and Monica enjoy being a couple at his office party; as his boss Doug and Doug’s wife, Kara, love her, they are invited to play tennis at Doug’s place, where Chandler goes to great lengths to let Doug win, despite Monica’s overly-competitive attitude, which both irritates and bemuses Doug and Kara. Monica is furious that Chandler’s such a suck-up at work; they get a dinner invitation, and Monica angrily tells Chandler not to suck up to Doug anymore. But as a consequence of everything he’d already done, he inadvertently comes across as being rude and offensive to Doug when he stops, and he is forced to quickly start sucking up to him again.

With Joey not being a useful font of knowledge about the subject, Rachel tries to get Monica to open up about her secret relationship with Chandler. When Monica still acts like nothing is going on, even when confronted with her earlier phone conversation, Rachel begins feeling hurt that her best friend has chosen not to trust her. Rachel later goes to confront them while they’re together, but then overhears Monica stating how much she hates lying to her roommate and decides to allow them to keep their relationship secret.

Ross is so frustrated he goes out with Janice, who still thinks Chandler is in Yemen. Everyone is stunned at this sight, while Ross claims to be amazed at how well she listens to him, but all his whining is too much even for her. Ross is speechless his whining annoys her, so stunned that he goes back to his old self. Before leaving, Janice makes a flirty notion to Joey who is left scared. When Ross apologizes to Chandler for having gone out with his ex, Chandler assures Ross that he doesn’t have a problem with that and laughs, until Ross brings up «the rules» where you shouldn’t date ex-girlfriends or relatives of your friends, at which point Chandler realizes he is doing the same thing but with Monica, and panics as he realizes that Ross will be angry when he discovers this. He does some quick thinking however and pretends that he actually is angry with Ross for going out with Janice before stating he forgives him, while giving him money and reminding him he’s letting him live in his apartment rent-free.

Trivia

  • When Joey tries to convince Ross to come to the movie with him and Phoebe, he says «Sure you don’t want to come? It’s Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, they get mail and stuff!«. He’s referring to the movie «You’ve Got Mail» starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
  • In this episode, Janice doesn’t say her catchphrase: «Oh my God!»
    • Ross, however, does say Janice’s catchphrase «Oh my God!» in an impersonating voice.
  • When Chandler refers to the damage done by Joey, he means the mess Joey did in the office in «The One With The Chicken Pox» where Joey almost cost Chandler his job.
  • When they are playing tennis, after Monica hits the ball into Kara, Chandler tells Monica «easy Martina«. This is a reference either to former world tennis champion Martina Navratilova, or Martina Hingis, an active champion at the time of the episode.
  • In the first scene in Joey and Chandler’s apartment, the Magna-Doodle says «Joey, Call Kim.» The next time we see the Magna-Doodle it says «J — Kim called Again!»
  • When Doug tells a joke about «President Clinton and her husband Bill», the joke implies that the First Lady during the time the episode was made, Hillary Clinton, was actually making the presidential decisions. Hillary Clinton would later attend the Presidential Elections of 2008 and 2016. However, she lost both of them to the candidates who ultimately became elected in the general elections, namely Barack Obama in 2008 and Donald Trump in 2016.

Goofs

  • When Monica and Rachel are in the coffee house, Monica’s muffin falls over even though Monica hasn’t touched it.
  • After folding his letter to Emily, he puts it in an envelope but after he’s licked the envelope, the letter is no longer in the envelope but between the flap and main part of the envelope.
  • When Chandler says «Are you sure you never played pro?» in this shot, he holds the racket with his left hand, but in the next shot, he holds it with his right hand.
  • When Monica is seen serving for the second time, she is at foot fault when her foot crosses into the field before the ball is struck. The play should have stopped immediately.
  • When Rachel says to Ross «you walked around the city all night by yourself?» her arms are folded but in the next shot as Joey says «tell us about her», Rachel’s arms are at her side.
  • When Ross is in the apartment Rachel is standing in line with Phoebe. Joey says «tell us about her» and Rachel turns back to face Ross. Janice enters the apartment and Rachel steps forward. Janice says «hey you guys» and Rachel is still forward of Phoebe. We get a quick shot of the gang, back to Janice and straight back to the gang and Rachel is in line again; there wasn’t time for Rachel to move that quick.
  • The apartment door behind Janice keeps changing how far open it is even though nobody’s moved.
  • When Janice is dumping Ross in the coffeehouse and Ross says «I annoy you? JANICE?,» he is holding a coffee cup with his left hand and gesturing towards Janice with his right hand. When the camera angle changes, he is gesturing with his left hand, and holding the cup with his right hand.
  • In this episode, Joey apologizes to Rachel for his crassness when describing Monica and Chandler’s relationship and corrects himself, correctly using air quotes as he says the two are «making love». However, a few years later, in «The One Where Emma Cries», he tells Ross that he’s never known what people mean when they use air quotes, and proceeds with a running joke in which he uses them incorrectly.
    • He could still have used it without knowing how it works, and just so happens used it correctly.
  • In the scene where everyone (minus Chandler) is waiting for Ross to come home, there is a visible silver strip running across the crack in Chandler’s bedroom door (possibly masking tape). Once Ross has entered, the strip is not visible and the door appears undamaged.
  • When Rachel is telling Monica she knows about her and Chandler, Monica can be seen putting things into a black canvas bag and then zipping it closed. However in the next shot showing a close-up of Monica, she zips up the bag again.
  • In the same scene, the position of the bag changes between when Monica says «Mr. Bigot» and then says «Mr. Bigot» again in response to Rachel’s «what?».

There’s no denying the popularity of the TV sitcom Friends. The show first aired in 1994 and chronicled the lives of New York City residents and friends Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey.

Its influence is still felt today, long after the show ended in 2004. Friends is one of the most streamed shows, and people keep returning for the group’s antics. Who could ever forget the turkey on Monica’s head?

via GIPHY

But, Friends also made an impact on our language, and we don’t just mean Joey’s catchphrase, How you doin’? Here are some of the other most memorable and popular words and phrases from Friends.

friend zone

Friends gets credit for popularizing the phrase friend zone.

In the Season 1 episode “The One with the Blackout,” Joey warns Ross of “the friend zone.” He describes it as the place Ross will end up if he doesn’t ask his crush Rachel out soon.

We still use friend zone in this way, describing a friendship where one person (typically male) has feelings for the other person, but the attraction is not mutual.

lobster

In Season 2, romance is in the air between Ross and Rachel. On the episode “The One with the Prom Video,” the ever-eccentric Phoebe declares that the pair are each other’s lobster. No, they’re not delicious crustaceans. They’re soul mates!

via GIPHY

According to Phoebe, lobsters mate for life. (Sorry, Phoebe, but the evidence points to a more limited period of monogamy.) Nevertheless, by saying Rachel is Ross’s lobster, Phoebe is implying that she is his one, true love. Fans of the show may still affectionately use the term lobster for their baes today.

unagi

Speaking of seafood, any sushi lover will recognize this one. Unagi is Japanese for “freshwater eel.” While the other characters tried to tell Ross this in a Season 6 episode (“The One with Unagi”), he insisted it was something very different.Unagi, according to Ross, is a state of total awareness. He couples it with a hilarious hand gesture of two fingers making a twisting motion pointed to the temple.

via GIPHY

He claims he learned it from karate, and the characters spend the whole episode trying to test if he has unagi. Oh, Ross …

vein

We’re all full of ’em, but if you’ve watched Friends, you know one character has a particularly special vein. It’s so special, it’s just referred to as the vein. That character is Monica, and the vein is a sign she’s very angry.

The idea of a visible forehead vein signaling stress or anger has prevailed since Friends. It became a recurring joke throughout the series, often brought up by Monica’s friend-turned-boyfriend-turned husband Chandler.

moist

Sorry. We should have warned you first.

The word moist elicits strong reactions, but you can’t deny that Monica’s famous Moist Maker sandwich sounds delicious. It’s why Ross nearly loses his mind when a coworker eats one in a fifth-season episode (“The One with Ross’ Sandwich).

via GIPHY

What’s in it? Thanksgiving leftovers: savory turkey, sweet cranberry sauce, and a slab of gravy-soaked bread in the middle that makes it moist.Fan recipes for the Moist Maker abound on Thanksgiving every year.

break

break can be a stressful time for a couple. It’s a period of space from your lobster; You’re not completely broken up, but spending time apart to sort through some issues. We can thank Friends for helping to popularize the term.

Ross and Rachel were on a break while they figured their relationship out, but the joke surrounding break was one of the longest running gags in the show. Ross tends to shout “We were on a break!” at mention of that time period with Rachel.

moot point

moot point is one that could be debated or, more commonly, one that lacks any practical value.

But, in a memorable bit from Season 7’s “The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs,” Joey tries to explain moot point to some of the gang—except he mispronounces it as moo point.

via GIPHY

“It’s like a cow’s opinion. It just doesn’t matter. It’s moo,” he expounds. Somehow, this makes sense, Joey. Somehow.

going commando

Going commando is to wear pants, shorts, etc., without … any underwear. The phrase has been around since the 1970s, but Friends helped further spread this humorous term.

In Season 3 (episode, “The One Where No One’s Ready”), the guys don rented tuxedos. Joey proclaims that he doesn’t have underwear on, and will not “go commando in another man’s fatigues.” Classic.

supposably

Are we hearing double? Is it supposedly or supposably?

In a Season 2 episode (“The One Where Heckles Dies”), Chandler bemoans to Joey that he could dump a girl because she says supposably.Joey begins to repeat the word to himself after Chandler leaves. (It’s also a good case for Joey having some of the best bits in the show despite how ditzy his character is supposed to be.)

So, which is it? Well, supposably (which is a perfectly real word) technically is the adverb form of supposable, that is, “abled to be supposed.” So, it’s similar to conceivably.Supposedly is the adverb form of supposed, making it akin to “allegedly.”

pivot

Pivot means “to turn or rotate,” literally and figuratively. If you’re moving furniture, it’s an especially literal—and useful—term. Ross discovered this in one of the shows most beloved jokes (and a clip you can literally watch over and over).

In Season 5 (episode, “The One with the Cop”), Ross recruits Rachel and Chandler to move a couch up to their apartment. It doesn’t go according to plan, and Ross resorts to shouting “Pivot!” at his friends. “Pivot!”

[ J. Bodenham ]

I bet a fun thing would be to go way back in time to where there was going to be an eclipse and tell the cave men, If I have come to destroy you, may the sun be blotted out from the sky. [ Jack Handey, Deep Thoughts ]

The love of a mother is never exhausted; it never changes, it never tires. A father may turn his back on his child, brothers and sisters may become inveterate enemies, husbands may desert their wives, wives their husbands; but a mother’s love endures through all; in good repute, in bad repute, in the face of the world’s condemnation, a mother still loves on, and still hopes that her child may turn from his evil ways, and repent; she still remembers the infant smiles that once filled her bosom with rapture, the merry laugh, the joyful shout of Iris childhood, the opening promise of his youth; and she can never be brought to think him all unworthy.

Обычно говорят put on, get on, draw on (надеть, натянуть) а здесь — lick on, «нанести с помощью лизания».

Так можно сказать и человеку, нещадно эксплуатирующему телефон: «Get off the phone!»

Из любопытной грамматики заметьте I really do.

Например: «I haven’t tried moonshine, but my friend Vitya has».

Два отличных плохопереводимых фразовых глагола — work out (о делах — наладиться, вырулить, получиться) и end up (оказаться в итоге).

Чтобы понять все оттенки этой реплики, нужно знать выражения kick in the crotch (ударить в пах) и spit on the neck (плюнуть на шею, что болезненно и довольно унизительно).

Вы тоже так можете: «Honey, I’m getting better at my job, and my salary got bigger! I’ll get you something nice for your birthday».

The Ivanovs were invited to the party.

The second chance, the first date or the first dates.

Чаще это относится к группам людей (the old, the rich) или к абстрактным понятиям (the good, the evil).

I go to the theatre.

School starts at 8 a.m. Маша ходит в школу возле дома – Maria goes to the school nearest her home.

Check out – проверять.

Pass on – передавать, пропускать. Синонимы: transfer, transmit, send.

Pass up — отказываться, уступать. Синонимы: refuse, deny, give up.

Take off – снимать, удалять, сбрасывать. Синоним – remove.

Take out – вывезти, вынимать, вынести. Синоним – pull out.

Fill out – заполнять, наполнять. Синонимы: fill, fill up, fill in.

Синонимы: shoot down, knock.

You have no idea – Ты не представляешь (и совсем это не «у тебя нет идей»). I have no idea –понятия не имею, не представляю.

Have a good time – хорошо проводить время, к подобным фразам относятся – have a good day, have a good trip.

  • You got way too much free time – У тебя слишком много свободного времени.
  • The hell with «something» —
  • Take my mind off – отвлечься от чего-либо.

By the way – кстати.

What`s going on with you?

Get married, get pregnant, get promoted.

Знаете в чем разница между wake up иget up?

Any minute now – с минуты на минуты.

Are you nuts? –

Don`t be mad. – «

Warner Bros. Television

В оригинале Чендлер говорит, что ему звонит его мать («And it turns out it’s my
mother»).

Warner Bros. Television

Warner Bros. Television

Warner Bros. Television

Warner Bros. Television

(Friends)

Paramount Comedy
