Find Free High-Resolution Images for Your PowerPoint Decks
by Avantix Learning Team | Updated October 9, 2021
Applies to: Microsoft® Word® 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 365 (Windows)
You can find beautiful free pictures that you can use in your PowerPoint presentations online. There are plenty of great stock photo sites that offer high-quality images at no charge. Images can make a big difference for audience engagement and can help your presentations look more professional. You can search for images on these sites by keyword and download images at different resolutions. Most of them allow personal and commercial use of images based on their license terms.
Some stock photo sites have free images and may also offer paid images on a premium plan. For free images, there is an element of risk in terms of copyright (as many users upload images). However, the following sites have better policing, known copyright owners, review processes or business backgrounds so they have a higher trust ranking. Be sure to check the site’s license terms when you’re using images.
Here’s our list of the best sources for free pictures to use in your PowerPoint presentations (links below):
- Unsplash
- PIKWIZARD
- Life of Pix
- BURST
- Picjumbo
- Rawpixel
- Pexels
- Pixabay
- Kaboompics
- StockSnap.io
If you have PowerPoint 365, you should also have access to Microsoft’s new stock images (through Insert Pictures).

The following are our picks of the top 10 websites (in no particular order) where you can find high-quality, free stock pictures for your presentations.
1. Unsplash
Unsplash was started by Crew, an online platform connecting freelance creatives with customers, that turned viral. It was started as a give-back project. Their images have a modern and artsy style and are high quality. Unsplash started as a Tumblr blog offering leftover professional shots for free. It has grown into a stand-alone website offering more than half a million royalty-free stock photos from contributing photographers.

License Details: Unsplash uses their own custom license, enabling free use in commercial projects with no attribution required (just like a Creative Commons Zero) but forbidding image compiling.
2. PIKWIZARD
PIKWIZARD is a professional stock photo site with over a million free high-quality images in multiple popular categories. It’s owned by Wavebreak Media, a stock video and photography production company led by Irish videographer and entrepreneur Sean Prior. The images come from various contributors, most of whom are known stock media producers. PikWizard also offers great image editing with a DesignWizard tool where you can add text to images.

License Details: PikWizard has their own custom license allowing free use in commercial projects, with a sensitive use clause. They don’t allow resale or use in products for resale (t-shirts, posters, etc.), but those are the only copyright restrictions.
3. Life of Pix
Life of Pix is owned by Canadian digital marketing agency LEEROY and provides hundreds of thousands of artistic and high quality photos. All files have been submitted by photographers and are free to download and use.
Photo by Cyril Mouty on Life of Pix
License Details: Life of Pix images are Public Domain so they are not subject to copyright. This allows free usage for commercial purposes, no attribution required, but the site does not allow mass distribution
Public Domain licenses should be safer for commercial use since there’s no copyright attached to the images. However, this only works if the contributor who donated them is the original copyright owner and all other required rights (such as model releases) are cleared. Since Life of Pix is owned by a reputable company, it is capable of providing trust in its free images.
4. BURST
BURST was launched in 2017 by Shopify and offers free stock images intended for e-shops and commercial use in general (although you can use the images for social media, blog posts and presentations). The site has a large library with thousands of high-resolution images with a current style covering popular commercial categories. Burst images are sourced from hired photographers and user submissions and all images are free to use.

License Details: Burst has two licenses: Creative Commons Zero (CC0) which is free usage for commercial purposes and a custom license which is almost identical to CC0 but which allows using photos in products for resale and has a sensitive use clause. Besides a no compiling term, there are no other copyright restrictions.
5. Picjumbo
Picjumbo was created by stock photographer Viktor Hanacek and hosts a library of more than 2,000 high-quality, commercial-ready, royalty-free stock images for free. People in the images are intentionally unrecognizable.

License Details: PicJumbo uses a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license so images are free for commercial projects. Be sure to use due diligence when using brands and trademarked subjects.
6. Rawpixel
Rawpixel was founded by Robert Churchill and has thousands of trendy, authentic and high-quality images submitted by qualified contributors. It offers free and premium pictures and you need to be sure you search for the free images. Users are limited to 100 free downloads per user per month.
License Details: Rawpixel uses a custom license with free usage for commercial purposes. There is a sensitive use clause and no resale is permitted.
7. Pexels
Pexels is a free stock photo site offering hundreds of thousands of royalty-free stock images in high resolution submitted by artists or added from other free photo sites. It was created by German twin brothers Bruno and Ingo Joseph. The images are beautiful and modern and all images are free to download and use. Pexels accepts user submissions but also aggregate images from multiple other sites which increases the risk of potential copyright or right of privacy infringements.
Photo by Marta Dzedyshko on Pexels
License Details: Pexels photos are licensed under Creative Commons Zero (CC0) so are free for commercial purposes, no attribution required.
8. Pixabay
Pixabay is a free stock photo site founded by German technology experts Hans Braxmeier and Simon Steinberger. It is crowdsourced from a global group of users. The library is huge (over 1 million) and the royalty-free images are all available for free. Most of them are high definition and suitable for commercial use. Pixabay has a professional curator that manually reviews and vets images for technical quality as well as legal validity. There are also paid images that will take you to another site for purchase.
Photo by Amy Irizarry on Pixabay
License Details: Pixabay uses a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license so images are free for commercial purposes with no attribution required.
9. Kaboompics
Kaboompics is owned by designer and photographer Karolina Grabowska. It offers free high-quality stock photos with a natural feel and multiple subjects. There are more than 8,000 images in the library and the pictures are quirky and modern. You can even search by colour palette.
Photo by Karolina Grabowska on Kaboompics
License Details: Kaboompics has a custom license granting free usage for commercial purposes that includes a sensitive use clause. Images may not be sold as-they-are-downloaded (so alterations to the original file are a requirement) and redistribution is also forbidden without permission. There is also a warning about the commercial use of photos with brands or trademarked subjects on them.
10. StockSnap.io
StockSnap.io is a stock image site by Christopher Gimmer and Marc Chouinard who also developed the graphic design tool Snappa. The site offers free high-resolution images in a modern and trendy style. Users submit the photos and all images are free so there is the usual risk in terms of copyright. There are also paid images that will take you to another site for purchase.

License Details: StockSnap uses a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license so images are free for commercial purposes.

Here at Buffer, we think a lot about visual content.
We’ve explored tools that help anyone create visual content. Our social media management tool incorporates image posting because we know how important that element is to engage your followers and fans.
But there’s one question we get asked quite often: Where can you find free images that are high quality and cleared to use for your blog posts or social media content?
It’s a question with a lot of different answers and caveats. Nearly every image created in the last 30 years is still protected by copyright—a protection that gives virtually every author the exclusive right to use or reproduce their work. But you can find a public domain photo, use a Creative Commons image that might need attribution, or even create your own image from scratch.
In this post, we’ll share more than 20 different sources and tools for free images, covering searchable image sites, create-your-own-image tools, and more.
Understand these terms before using any free images
The following terms will come up often as we discuss free image sources. Read over the terms and conditions of each site you try so you know exactly when and what type of attribution is required.
What is Creative Commons?
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. Various types of Creative Commons licenses range from allowing any type of use with no attribution to allowing only certain uses and no changes.
What is public domain?
Works in the public domain are those whose copyrights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable. Finding something online does not mean it is in the public domain.
What is royalty-free?
Royalty-free images aren’t necessarily free. In most cases, you’ll have to pay a one-time fee to obtain the rights to use the image. Then you can use it as many times as you like. The “free” in “royalty-free” only means that you do not have to pay royalties to the owner of the image every time you use it. For a comprehensive read on royalty-free images, check out this guide.
Now, on to the list! To better help you evaluate these sites, I performed the same search, if possible, on each using the term “happy people.”
1. Unsplash
Unsplash has its own license, which essentially lets you use the images for free, in any way you like, except for using them to create a competing website. (We are huge fans of Unsplash here at Buffer!)
2. Burst (by Shopify)
Burst is a free stock photo platform for entrepreneurs by Shopify. The images are both free and royalty-free.
3. Pexels
Pexels also has its own license, which states what you can and cannot do with the images. You can use and modify the images for free for both commercial and personal use without attribution.
4. Pixabay
Images on Pixabay are licensed under Creative Commons Zero (CC0), which means you can use them without asking for permission or giving credit to the artist (though it’s always appreciated). Pixabay provides a gentle reminder to check that the content depicted in the images doesn’t infringe on any rights. Pixabay also offers more content formats, from illustrations to sound effects.
Free Images provides over 300,000 free stock images under its own license. The license allows a very broad range of uses, though it does list several restricted use cases (which are quite common for most free image sites).
6. Kaboompics
Kaboompics uses its own license, which is similar to Creative Commons Zero except that you cannot redistribute its photos. There are two things that I love about Kaboompics: one, it allows me to search by color, and two, it provides a complementary palette of colors in the photo.
7. Stocksnap.io
Stocksnap uses the Creative Commons CC0 license, so its photos are free to download, edit, and use for commercial and non-commercial projects.
8. Canva
Canva is an online graphic design tool that also offers free stock photos. One advantage of using Canva is that you can quickly turn an image into a custom graphic to use on social media or your blog.
9. Life of Pix
Life of Pix lists free high-resolution photographs and partners with Adobe Stock for more (paid) stock photographs.
10. Gratisography
Gratisography also has its own free photo license, which lets you do “almost anything you can think of”. While they have a rather limited number of images now, many are high-quality images that I would use.
11. Flickr
Flickr is an image hosting platform where you can find images that can be used and modified for commercial purposes. Select «Any license» and then “Commercial use & mods allowed” to find those images, and remember to check the license for each image as they vary.
12. The Jopwell Collection (by Jopwell)
The Jopwell Collection contains several albums with hundreds of images featuring people in the Jopwell community. The images are free to be downloaded and used as long as you visibly attribute Jopwell. (You can read the story behind this collection here.)
13. WOCinTech
This is an album of photos of women of color in tech, started by Christina and Stephanie, the founders of #WOCinTech Chat. The images can be used as long as you attribute #WOCinTech Chat or wocintechchat.com. (While the team isn’t updating the album anymore, there are over 500 images to choose from!)
14. CreateHER Stock
CreateHER Stock’s team has manually curated more than 200 high-quality images of women of color, which might be used for personal use only. (Do check out their license here.) You can also receive new free images every month when you sign up to their newsletter.
15. Death to Stock
Unlike most websites mentioned in this post, Death to Stock doesn’t have a gallery of images. It sends you 20 new photos every month when you sign up for its newsletter.
16. Getty Images
This might come as a surprise to you (as it was to me). You can use images from Getty Images on your non-commercial websites for free by embedding them. Downloading an image and uploading it to your website is still a no-no—you’ve got to embed it. An embed is slightly more intrusive than simply adding a photo to your post – it keeps its own frame, share buttons, and branding. Still, for many blogs, it’s an option worth looking into.
17. PicJumbo
PicJumbo offers a variety of free images for any kind of use—free of charge with no registration required. You can also get new free images by subscribing to their newsletter. (If you have the budget to spare, do check out their premium photo collections such as this, which looks amazing to me! It even has vertical images for Stories content.)
18. VistaCreate
Similar to Canva, VistaCreate is a graphic design tool that has many free images for you to use.
19. Depositphotos
Depositphotos offers a sample of free images, vectors, editorial content, and footages, which is updated every week. You can also sign up for an account to get the free stock files every week.
20. iStock
iStock releases a new batch of free stock files every week when you sign up for a free membership.
21. New Old Stock
New Old Stock is a collection of vintage photos from the public archives, free of known copyright restrictions.
22. Google Advanced Image Search
Google Advanced Image Search is a method of finding free-to-use images through Google’s own search tools. Here’s a quick guide.
23+ Facebook posts, Instagram posts, tweets, and more
It’s also worth noting that you can embed Facebook posts, Instagram posts, tweets, TikTok videos, and YouTube videos in your blog post.
Pinterest boards are a little trickier to embed, but it can be done by using its widget builder and copying and pasting the code into your blog post.
Often, readers can engage with embedded posts more deeply than static content by following users, liking, or commenting on the posts.
Consider replacing screenshots with embedded posts so readers can engage with your examples.
Schedule your images with Buffer
Whenever you share your blog posts or marketing websites with Buffer (either through your dashboard or the browser extension), we will automatically pick up images from those websites and suggest them to you for your social media posts. You just have to click on your favorite image to add it to your social media post.
(Note: When sharing images from others’ websites, it’s always advisable to check with the owner of the website or image first.)
Over to you
