Английский (американский вариант)
What we will call your mind, for want of a better word.
-
Английский (американский вариант)
«want» can mean «lack» in some situations, especially in more archaic English. So «for want of a better word» means «because I cannot think of a better word.»
Benjamin Franklin’s poem «For Want of a Nail» uses the word «want» in the same way.

@dongelev85 Thanks. What does «what» mean here? Actually, that sentence is from this picture. It is Double Cross Purposes by Ronald A Knox.
-
Английский (американский вариант)
What we will call your mind, for want of a better word.
-
Японский
@dongelev85 literally means she doesn’t know what to call his mind because of lack of words to describe?
-
Английский (американский вариант)
Yes. It looks like she’s insulting him, saying that his mind doesn’t deserve to be called a mind

Hi everyone,
I have a good one for you.
In English, when you admit that you are using a certain word because you are unable in that moment to think of a better (more suitable) word, you say «for want of a better word».
«Eg. John is, for want of a better word, clumsy».
Is there an eqivament phrase in Italian?
My attempt:
«Per mancanza di una parola migliore».
Any ideas?
Fb.

Maybe: come (posso) dire?/diciamo…
John è.. come dire?… imbranato
John è imbranato, diciamo.

Maybe: come (posso) dire?/diciamo…
John è.. come dire?… imbranato
John è imbranato, diciamo.
I totally agree.
-
#4
In italian if you want for a better word to use because the word you’d like to use is too vulgar or insulting we can say PER NON USARE UN ALTRO TERMINE/PAROLA
Eg John e’ , per non usare un altro termine, imbranato
es I’m very angry, for want of a better word Sono molto arrabbiato, per non usare un altro termine
It depends on the context
