In BE, to fix is not as common as to make — you can substitute «make» for fix throughout.
I understand that I can use the word «fix» for food» to mean prepare food for somebody, is that correct?
Short answer «Yes»;
Long answer: You should be careful of how you use «fix». It is a very informal verb when used in the sense of to make food for someone or, indeed, in any of the meanings of someone else doing something.
You can use fix if you are speaking about yourself: «Hey everyone, come and eat, I’ve fixed some food for us.»
To fix can be used politely as a request:
«Mum, can you fix some food for me? I’m going out in half an hour.» -> «I asked my mother if she could fix some food for me.»
or a suggestion
«I’ll continue chopping the wood, if you fix the food.» -> «I told him I’d continue working if he fixed the food.»
But in any sense that implies a command:
1) I asked my mother to fix me some food. -> this would be grammatically correct but considered impolite and disrespectful. In this use, «to fix» has the nuance of an abrupt command/an order. -> «Hey! You! Make me some food!»
2) My mother did not fix me any food. -> this sounds as if you are spoiled and insolently think your mother is useless as she did not attend to your needs immediately.
3) My mother did not fix me anything. -> I would need some context before I could comment.
