The Criminal

A man had been in jail because he stole things. The criminal never felt bad. One day, he escaped and ran into the woods. He found a cabin with a fence. The cabin was very neat. Inside, the criminal found a bowl of fruit, a bottle of milk, and a dozen eggs. He ate the fruit and drank the milk. But the eggs smelled funny, so he put them in the trash bin. Soon, he heard the sound of a vehicle’s motor.

An old man came in and saw the criminal. The old man yelled, “Why are you in my house?” The criminal lied, “I am a policeman.” The old man replied, “I am your elder. You cannot fool me. You are the criminal.” The criminal’s facial expression became very sad.

He admitted that he was a criminal. He said, “I’m sorry. It was rude for me to come into your home. Please take the cash from my wallet. It is a mere amount, but it will settle our problem.” The old man said, “I do not want your money. I just want to inspire you to be good. There will be no penalty for taking my food.”

On this occasion, the criminal realized that he had been bad. He listened to the old man and never stole from anyone ever again.

        The
        Concept of Electrical Current

In the beginning of the 17th century
Sir William Gilbert discovered that many substances could be electrified by
friction. Gilbert named this effect «electric» after the world «electron» — the
Greek name for amber. In 1756 the great Russian scientist M. V. Lomonosov was
the first to make theoretical analysis of electrical phenomena.

        At present the nature of
electrification is explanted by the electron theory. According to the modern
theory all matter is composed of atoms or tiny particles. There are many kinds
of atoms. Each atom consists of a nucleus, a small positively charged mass and
a number of lighter negatively charged particles called electrons, which
revolve around the nucleus. Normally each atom of a substance is electrically
neutral, or it has equal amounts of negative and positive charges, i.e.
produces no electrical effects. If the number of negative charges is not equal
to the number of positive charges, the matter will produce electrical effects.

When an electric charge is at rest it
is spoken of as static electricity, but when it is in motion it is referred to
as an electric current. In most cases, an electric current is described as a
flow of electric charges along a conductor.

Not all substances are good conductors
of electricity, as a general rule metals are good conductors of electricity,
whereas nonmetals are poor conductors. The poorest of conductors are commonly
called insulators or nonconductors. There are a large number of substances that
are neither good conductors of electricity nor good insulators. These substances
are called semi-conductors. An electric current which flows in the same
direction through a conductor or a current which does not change its polarity
is called a direct current or a continuous current. Its abbreviation is D. C.
An alternating current (A. C.) flows first in one direction and then in the
        other.

An electric circuit is a path through
which an electric current flows. This is a complete path along which electrons
can transmit their charges. An electric circuit includes a battery, generator, or
magnetic means for producting current flow. Some portion of the circuit is made
        to do useful work.

The circuit is said to be open when no
charges can move due to a break in the path. The circuit is said to be closed
when no break exists-when switches are closed and all connections are properly
        made.

Special symbols are used to show
electrical systems. There is a wide range of these symbols. There are some of
them which are used when we draw circuits. And now look at the diagram of
        series and parallel arrangements.

        Electrical Measuring Units and
        Instruments

        Any instrument
which measures electrical values is called a meter. An ammeter measures the
current in amperes. The unit is named after Andre Marie Ampere, a French
scientist. A voltmeter measures the voltage and the potential difference in
volts. The volt is named after Alessandro Volta, an Italian scientist.

        The
current in a conductor is determined by two things, the voltage across the
conductor. The unit by which resistance is measured is called the ohm.
The resistance in practice is measured with the ohmmeter, a wattmeter measures
electrical power in watts. Very delicate ammeters are often used for measuring
very small currents. Whenever an ammeter or voltmeter is connected to a circuit
to measure electric current or potential difference the ammeter must be connected
in series and the voltmeter in parallel.

        The capacitor

        A
capacitor is an electrical device for storing quantities of electricity. The
general form of a capacitor is what of two parallel conducting plates.

        Such
plates are of relatively large area, close together, and contain between them a
non-conducting medium called the dielectric common dielectric are air, glass,
        oil and waxed paper.

        To
increase the capacitance of a capacitor the following changes can be made:
first, the area of the plates may be increased.

        Second,
the plates may be put closer together

        Third,
a more suitable dielectric may be inserted between the plates.

        If the
plates of a capacitor are small in area and far apart, the capacitance is
small. If the area is large and plates close together, the capacitance is
large. The unit of capacitance, the farad, named in honour of Michael Faraday
scientist a capacitance of 1 farad is very large and for practical purposes is
not used. The microfarad is more convenient. Capacitors in common use today are
of various kinds, sizes and shapes. Perhaps the most common is the so-called
«paper capacitor» used in radios and the ignition system of automobiles another
type of capacitor is the variable capacitor commonly used in tuning radios.

        Septic Systems

        Let us help you
        with your sewage needs!

        Are you in need of
your own on-site sewage facility? If you live outside the city, the answer is
most likely “yes”.  We’ve been in the septic system business for over twenty
        years. Here’s what we do:

        ·
Help you choose the right septic system for your needs.

        ·
Install your septic system so you can be sure it will work right.

        How does a septic
        system work?

        All the wastewater
in your home flows a septic tank. The septic tank has two chambers. Wastewater
flows into the first chamber. Here, solid waste settles on the bottom of  the
chamber to form sediment. Scum floats to the top of the chamber.

        Between the scum
layer and the sediment layer is effluent. The effluent is piped into the second
chamber. More wastewater enters the first chamber. The effluent in the second
chamber is pushed out. The effluent is deposited either in a leach pit or leach
field. There it will percolate into the soil.

        Septic tanks
should be cleaned or “pumped out” every two or three years. There is a hatch on
the septic tank for this purpose.

        1.      Answer
        the questions:

        a)
What are some parts of a septic system?

        b)
Is having a septic system better or worse than being
connected to a main sewer line? Why do you think so?

        c)
What grammatical phenomena can you analyze in the text?

        d)

        of the tank serves a function. _ _ _ m _ _ r

        5 The soil in the
        leach pit filtered the treated wastewater. _ _ r _ _ l _ _ _ d

        5. Fill in the
blanks with the correct words and phrases from the word bank

         Word bank: septic
system, effluent, leach field, sediment, septic tank, on-site sewage facility

        SUBJECT:               New
        project / division of tasks

        To All Employees:

        I am pleased to announce
that our company has won the contract to provide water service to the new
university business school building. This is a major project that presents a
great opportunity for our company. We will be digging the trench, laying the
required pipes, and connecting the pipes to the interior plumbing.

        We will need hard work
from all employees to make this project a success. Duties will be as follows:

        Kurt Wilcox’s team will
dig the trench and place backfill upon completion. Sue Harmon will be
responsible for trench safety. This team must ensure an appropriate
        burial-depth at all locations.

        Chris Simmons’ team will
lay the water service pipe and connect it to the water main.

                 You will
need to connect the water utility to arrange a time
        for                            the    connection.

                  Diana
Staley’s team will connect the pipe into the building’s plumbing. The building
contractor has already carved a sleeve for the pipe to fit through. This team
will contract the water utility for the appropriate water meter to install.
They should also provide a precise trickle indicator. Last, the team should check
to make sure both the incoming and outgoing connections are working properly.

        With your help I
know this project will be successful.

        Sincerely,

        Tom Gaines

        Tomorrow’s kitchen sink installation

        Hi
        Gina,

        Here
are the details for tomorrow’s installation. The sink has a width of two feet.
The height of the counter is four feet. The sink has a depth of one foot. The
owner wants a side spray with flexible hose. The hose should be two feet in
length. Before you install the sink, check the thickness of the counter. It
needs enough strength to hold the sink’s weight.

        Also,
now the owner wants PVC pipes under  the sink, not aluminum. They’re less
rigid, but they have good durability. Please note these changes in your work
        order.

        Preparing the Pipes

First, measure the correct length of pipe. Choose where to cut the pipe and
mark the spot. To slice the pipe, we recommend a pipe cutter.

Slide the piece of pipe into the pipe cutter. Adjust the pipe cutter to fit the
pipe. Then turn the wheels until the blade touches the pipe. Be sure that the
pipe is straight. If the pipe tilts in the pipe cutter, it will not cut
        properly.

To saw through the pipe, rotate the pipe cutter. Remove any rough edges inside
the pipe. Measure the new pipe segment to ensure it is correct.

        Installing Fixtures

        Hi
        Roger,

        The
house on the 10th Street needs some fixtures installed. Your crew
should install them by tomorrow. There’s a toilet ready to go in the downstairs
bathroom. The fixture company will deliver the sink and bathtub. They’ll also
bring another toilet, bidet, and shower for the second floor. The family wants
more than a water closet up there. They want a lavatory, as well.

        Also,
put a basin in the laundry. The company will deliver it today. Don’t forget to
install the kitchen sink. And clear the kitchen countertop when you finish.

        Thanks,

        Home repair involves
the diagnosis and resolution of problems in a
home, and is related to home maintenance to avoid such problems.
Many types of repairs are «
do it yourself» (DIY) projects, while others may be so complicated,
time-consuming or risky as to suggest the assistance of a qualified
        handymanproperty managercontractor/builder, or
        other
professionals. Repair is not necessarily the same as home
        improvement
, although many improvements can result from
repairs or maintenance. Often the costs of larger repairs will justify the
alternative of investment in full-scale improvements. It may make just as much
sense to upgrade a home system (with an improved one) as to repair it or incur
ever-more-frequent and expensive maintenance for an inefficient, obsolete or
dying system. For a DIY project, it is also useful to establish limits on how
much time and money you’re willing to invest before deciding a repair (or list
of repairs) is overwhelming and discouraging, and less likely to ever be
        completed.

        Worn, consumed, dull, dirty, clogged

        Repairs
often mean simple replacement of worn or used components intended to be
periodically renewed by a home-owner, such as burnt out
        light
        bulbs
        , worn out batteries, or
        overfilled
        vacuum cleaner bags.
Another class of home repairs relates to restoring something to a useful
        condition, such as sharpening
        tools or utensils, replacing
        leaky
        faucet washers, cleaning
        out
        plumbing traps, rain gutters.
Because of the required precision, specialized tools, or hazards, some of these
are best left to experts such as a
        plumber. One emergency repair that
may be necessary in this area is overflowing
        toilets.
Most of them have a shut-off valve on a pipe beneath or behind them so that the
water supply can be turned off while repairs are made, either by removing a
clog or repairing a broken mechanism.

        Broken or damaged[edit]

        Perhaps the most
perplexing repairs facing a home-owner are broken or damaged things. In today’s
era of built-in obsolescence for many products, it is often more convenient to
replace something rather than attempt to repair it. A repairman is faced with
the tasks of accurately identifying the problem, then finding the materials,
supplies, tools and skills necessary to sufficiently effect the repair. Some
things, such as broken windows, appliances or furniture can be carried to a
repair shop, but there are many repairs that can be performed easily enough,
        such as patching holes in
        plaster and drywall,
cleaning stains, repairing cracked windows and their screens, or replacing a
broken electrical switch or outlet. Other repairs may have some urgency, such
as a broken water pipes, broken doors, latches or windows, or a leaky roof or
water tank, and this factor can certainly justify calling for professional
help. A home handyman may become adept at dealing with such immediate repairs,
to avoid further damage or loss, until a professional can be summoned.

        Emergency repairs[edit]

        Emergencies can
happen at any time so it is important to know how to quickly and efficiently
fix the problem. From natural disasters, power loss, appliance failure and no
water, emergency repairs tend to be one of the most important repairs to be
comfortable and confident with. In most cases, the repairs are DIY or fixable
with whatever is around the house. Common repairs would be fixing a leak,
broken window, flooding, frozen pipes or clogged toilet. Each problem can have
a relatively simple fix, a leaky roof and broken window can be patched, flood
can be pumped out, pipes can be thawed and repaired and toilets can be
unclogged with a chemical. For the most part, emergency repairs are not
permanent. They are what you can do fast to stop the problem then have a
professional come in to permanently fix it.
        [1] Flooding
as a result of frozen pipes, clogged toilets or a leaky roof can result in very
        costly
        water damage repairs
and even potential health issues resulting from
        mold growth if
not addressed in a timely manner.

        Welcome
to Brazen Hardware! If you need parts for a piping system, review our adapter
        and fitting guide.

        To
connect two pipes into a continuous pipe, use a coupling.

        To
connect pipes of different size, use a reducer fitting. A bushing is an example
        of a reducer.

        To
make a joint accessible in the future, install a union.

        To
create an offset in your system, use an elbow or a street.

        Use a
tee to connect a branch pipe to your main system.

        Remember,
female pipe ends, such as hubs, will only connect to male fittings or pipe
ends. Such connections may be threaded or unthreaded.

        Clog Removal

Some plumbing problems require the tools and know-how of a plumbing expert.
Others simply require a determined homeowner and some basic equipment. Some of
the most common of these plumbing issues are clogs.

The first way to clear a clogged drainpipe is to try using a plunger. Place the
rubber cup over the sink or toilet drain to create a watertight seal. Then
firmly push the plunger up and down. This will force water through the system
and hopefully send the blockage on its way.

If the clog cannot be removed with a plunger, an auger may be needed. A closet
auger has a relatively short flexible cable and a corkscrew tip. This will be
sufficient for pulling out clogs in the first few feet of a drain system. If
the clog is further back, you might need a cable auger. Also called a plumber’s
snake, this tool has a long flexible cable that can extend far back into drain
system. It will also have a cranking mechanism to extend and retract the cable.

Note: To avoid damaging pipes, an electric power auger is not is not
        recommended on lighter plumbing systems.

        FROM:

        DATE:
        October 18

        SUBJECT:
        Communication Issues

        Hank
Milton is the owner of Milton Homes. Mr. Milton is one of our biggest clients. Yesterday
I received an email from him. Some of the fixtures in the Paradise Subdivision
were not installed correctly. Apparently, there was confusion about the
        instructions on the rough-in sheet.

        In
these cases, employees should consult their on-site supervisor. This will allow
you to confirm the correct way to do things. The employees on the job site were
not carrying their smart phones. As a result, they were unable to call each
other. The posted company policy states employees are to carry their phones
while working. The company provides phones and two-way radios to all employees.

        These
allow you to contact me and each other while on the job. From now on, please be
sure to carry your phones and radios.

        Milton
Homes received building permits for another subdivision. We will get the work
orders for the plumbing. Let’s do it right this time.

is it important for employees to be able to communicate with each other on job

are some methods they use to communicate on job sites?

        Good morning! How are you?

        Candidate:
        Fine, thank you very much.

        Employer:
We made this appointment to speak about your personality traits and your
professional skills. Please, tell us about yourself.

        Candidate:
I`m a very friendly person. Love to people helps me at solving different
problems. I am responsible and diligent. I`m really good at working with
personal computers and I`m very interested in programming (software
engineering). When I was a university undergraduate I was twice awarded the
second prize in the database programming competition.

        Employer:
Can you explain us, why should our company hire you?

        Candidate:
I can work very well with other people, because I`m a real team player. My

        Employer:

        Employer:

        Safety first

        The
main causes of accidents in the workplace are not dramatic fires and explosions,
but very ordinary accidents that can be easily prevented by workers looking out
for their own safety and the safety of others. Many of these accidents are
minor, but some cause death or serious injury. The most common cause of
accidents is from slips , trips and falls, followed by lifting and carrying.
Accidents involving cuts, burns, dropped objects, falling from height, and
collisions are also common but often avoidable.

        The
main preventable measure is safety training. All employees in the oil and gas
industry go through regular safety training courses to encourage a strong
safety culture. For hazardous areas , employees will be issued with personal
protective equipment (PPE) which must be worn in signed areas. Safety boots ,
hard hats, overalls, gloves, and safety glasses are usually a standard issue.
In addition, ear protectors and special trades’ equipment such as welding
shields, goggles, and gloves will be issued.

        Safety
signage has to be followed. Signs are classified with different shapes and
colours to denote whether they are mandatory , warnings, or giving information.
Most signs are independent of language and use standard symbols as ideograms.
The meaning of some of these signs is not always immediately obvious and so
they should be learnt. Following information signs is practiced in fire drills
where workers must follow signs to safe areas. Those working offshore will
attend special courses on helicopter escape, use of life jackets and survival
craft, and escape through smoke. There are often opportunities for workers to
volunteer as fire officers or firest aiders, and special training is given.

        Safety signs: colours and
        shapes

Safety signs are very important because the oil and gas
industry has many hazards. Hazards are possible dangers like electricity,
chemicals, hot things, gas, machines, noise, falling objects, and slippery
        surfaces.
There are four main kinds of
        safety signs:

        ·
        Black and yellow triangles.

These signs warn us about hazards.

        ·
        Blue and white circles

These signs tell us “You must wear or do the thing in the
        picture”

        ·
        Red and white circles

These signs usually have a red band across them. They tell
us we must not do things.

        ·
Green and white squares or rectangles

These signs give information about safety.

        4.
Match the signs with the descriptions
        given below.

Read the health and safety officer talking to a team of
        welders and pipe-fitters

        H — health
        and safety officer

        P1— pipe-fitter1

        P2— pipe-fitter2

        P3— pipe-fitter3

        There are
six main hazards for welders. Can you name them?

        P1 Electric
        shock

        Right. So
        what do we do?

        P2 Weld dry.
        Don’t stand in water.

        P3 And wear
leather shoes and always wear gloves.

        H Right . we
also check our equipment often. We switch off equipment when we are not using
        it.
        Another hazard?

        P3 Gas
        cylinders. Gas cylinders can explode.

        Correct .
So how do we stay safe?

        P1 Don’t drop
        them!

        Right. How?

        P2 Always
secure the cylinders. And always move them safely.

        . Ok. And
        three steps before moving?

        P2 Close the
valve, remove the regulator , and replace the valve cap. Then use a cart to
        move a cylinder.

        Right. And
always close the valve when you go on break or at the end of the day. Also ,
you should always wear your safety glasses when you’re working. OK, that’s two
        hazards. What else?

        P3 Arc rays
        They burn eyes and skin

        Precautions?

        P1 Cover skin
and eyes. Never look at the spark. Always use a welder’s helmet and gloves.

        . Those
things also protect us from arc sparks. Hot sparks can burn clothes and start
fires. So wear your protective clothes. Cotton trousers are good. And no
pockets! Pockets catch sparks. Another hazard?

        P2 Smoke.
Smoke from welding can be dangerous .

        P1 So we use
respirators. And we always know the material we’re welding.

        That’s
right . And indoors, we always use the ventilation system. OK, there’s one more
hazard on my list . Trips and falls You work in confined spaces, sometimes
underground, sometimes high u. So what do you do?

        P3 Always
think about where you are. Wear a safety harness.

        P2 Keep the
        work area clean and tidy.

        Right
