How do I open DOC and DOCX files?
DOC and DOCX files are Microsoft Word documents commonly used to author business, academic, and personal documents. These files can contain a variety of document content, including text, images, shapes, styles, and page formatting. While the DOC and DOCX formats are both supported by Microsoft Word, there are differences between the formats. DOC files use a proprietary binary format and are used by Microsoft Word 2003 and earlier.
DOCX files use a newer file format referred to as Open XML, which stores a document as a collection of separate files and folders in a compressed zip package. Occasionally, Windows files get damaged or corrupted. This makes it difficult to open these files in Microsoft Word. If this happens to you, the below guide can help you recover the files and continue working.
Instructions in this article apply to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, Word 2013, Word 2010, and Word 2007.
How to Repair Microsoft Word File Associations
Windows file associations can change inadvertently. Follow these steps to fix the issue:

Open Windows File Explorer, navigate to the folder that contains the file, then right-click the file.

Select Open With.

Select Microsoft Word from the list of options. The next time you select the file, it will open correctly.
How to Open a Damaged Word File
If your file is damaged, use the Open and Repair feature to recover it.

Open Word, select File > Open > Browse, then navigate to the file location. Don’t open the file from the Recent section.
In Office 2013, select the location, then select Browse. In Office 2010, you don’t need to select Browse.

Select the file you want, select the Open drop-down arrow, then choose Open and Repair.
How to Avoid File Corruption
Files typically become corrupted when a computer crashes or loses power. If this happens, open a previous version of the file if you’ve turned on the AutoRecover feature in the Word preferences.
File corruption also occurs when the file is stored on a USB device that’s disconnected while it’s open in Windows. If the device’s activity light is flashing, wait a few seconds after it quits blinking before removing it. If it doesn’t stop, go to the Windows taskbar and select the Safely Remove Hardware icon.
Additionally, in Microsoft 365, store files on OneDrive and use the AutoSave feature as an extra layer of protection.

Go to https://drive.google.com in a web browser. If you’re not already signed in to a Google/Gmail account, click the Go to Google Drive button, and then sign in or create an account now.

Со временем DOC-файлы стали частью монополии компании Microsoft. После долгих лет развития все пришло к тому, что теперь сам формат плохо интегрируется ос сторонними приложениями и, более того, между разными версиями одного формата есть проблемы совместимости, которые порой мешают нормально работать.
Все же, стоит рассмотреть, чем можно быстро и незатруднительно открыть документ формата DOC.
Способ 1: Microsoft Office Word
Самым оптимальным и лучшим способом открытия документа DOC является программа Microsoft Office Word. Именно через это приложение и создается сам формат, именно оно теперь является одним из немногих, что может открывать и редактировать документы данного формата без проблем.
Среди плюсов программы можно отметить практическое отсутствие проблем совместимости различных версий документа, большой функционал и возможности для редактирования DOC. К минусам же приложения обязательно стоит отнести стоимость, которая не всем по карману и довольно серьезные системные требования (на некоторых ноутбуках и нетбуках программа может иногда «виснуть»).

Способ 2: Microsoft Word Viewer
Следующий способ также связан с компанией Microsoft, только теперь для открытия будет использоваться совсем слабый инструмент, который помогает лишь просматривать документ и производить над ним некоторые правки. Для открытия будем использовать Microsoft Word Viewer.
Из плюсов программы можно выделить то, что она имеет совсем малый размер, распространяется бесплатно и быстро работает даже на самых слабых компьютерах. Есть и минусы, например, редкие обновления и малый функционал, но много и не требуется от Viewer, это ведь именно средство просмотра файлов, а не функциональный редактор, коим является упомянутый выше MS Word.
Открывать документ можно начинать с первоначального запуска самой программы, что не очень удобно, так как найти ее на компьютере довольно проблематично. Поэтому рассмотрим немного другой способ.

- Надо нажать на сам документ DOC правой кнопкой мыши, выбрать пункт «Открыть с помощью» — «Microsoft Word Viewer».
Возможно программа не будет отображена в первых программах, поэтому придется посмотреть в других возможных приложениях.
- Сразу после открытия появится окно, в котором пользователю предложат выбрать кодировку для преобразования файла. Обычно требуется лишь нажать на кнопку «ОК», так как по умолчанию установлена правильная кодировка, все остальное зависит лишь от сценария самого документа.
- Теперь можно наслаждаться просмотром документа через программу и небольшим списком настроек, которых будет достаточно для быстрой правки.
С помощью Word Viewer можно открыть DOC меньше чем за минуту, потому что все делается за пару кликов.
Способ 3: LibreOffice
Офисное приложение LibreOffice позволяет открывать документы формата DOC в разы быстрее, чем Microsoft Office и Word Viewer. Это уже можно отнести к преимуществу. Еще одним плюсом является то, что программа распространяется абсолютно бесплатно, еще и со свободным доступом к исходному коду, так что каждый пользователь может попробовать улучшить приложение для себя и для других пользователей. Еще есть одна особенность у программы: на стартовом окне не обязательно открывать нужный файл нажатиями на разные пункты меню, достаточно лишь перенести документ в нужную область.

К минусам можно отнести чуть меньший функционал, чем в Microsoft Office, что не мешает редактировать документы довольно серьезными инструментами, и довольно сложный интерфейс, который не всем понятен с первого раза, в отличие от, к примеру, программы Word Viewer.
- Как только программа открылась, можно сразу брать необходимый документ и переносить его в основную рабочую область, которая выделена другим цветом.
- После небольшой загрузки документ отобразится в окне программы и пользователь сможет спокойно просматривать его и вносить необходимые правки.
Вот так программа LibreOffice помогает быстро решить вопрос с открытием документа формата DOC, чем не всегда может похвастаться Microsoft Office Word из-за своей долгой загрузки.

Способ 4: File Viewer
Программа File Viewer является не очень популярной, но именно с ее помощью можно открыть документ формата DOC, что не могут нормально сделать многие конкуренты.
Из плюсов можно отметить быструю скорость работы, интересный интерфейс и приличное количество инструментов для редактирования. К минусам же надо отнести десятидневную бесплатную версию, которую потом придется покупать, иначе функционал будет ограничен.

- Первым делом после открытия самой программы надо нажать на «File» — «Open…» или же просто зажать «Ctrl+O».
- Теперь надо выбрать в диалоговом окне файл, который надо открыть и нажать на соответствующую кнопку.
- После небольшой загрузки документ отобразится в окне программы и пользователь сможет спокойно просматривать его и вносить необходимые изменения.

It’s been several years since Microsoft introduced a new document format in its Office 2007 suite called .Docx, but still many people seem to wonder what .docx file is and how to open, read, and edit them!
Note: This article is like a help guide for technically challenged who are looking at how to open .Docx files without having the Microsoft Office suite handy. The article was originally written in 2010 and was recently updated for relevancy in 2020.
What is a .Docx File?
As mentioned earlier, .Docx is a new word format introduced by Microsoft from Office 2007 onwards, which succeeds the hugely popular .Doc format. It follows the new standard for documents from Microsoft called Office Open XML, which is also known as OOXML or OpenXML. A DOCX file is a document created by Microsoft Word or another word processing program, such as OpenOffice Writer or Apple Pages.
If you are using older versions of Microsoft Office, prior to Office 2007, you cannot directly open Docx files, but there are many alternate ways to open, read and edit .Docx files without MS Office 2007 or later versions installed on your PC or smartphone.
When a .docx file cannot be opened by regular means (as listed below), you might need a special tool to repair Word document. The software can preview the contents of the document without MS Word and recover the Microsoft Word files that were damaged.
1. Open .Docx with Older version of MS Office
In case you have Office 2003 or Office 2000, or Office XP installed on your PC, just download the Microsoft compatibility pack and install it. You will be able to read the .docx files in your current installation of Microsoft Office.
2. Using Google Docs
This is one of my favorite ways to open and read .Docx files, as I don’t need to install anything on my PC. Just upload the .docx file to Google Docs (Google Drive) and then use it to open, read, and even edit online. You can also convert it back to .Doc if you wish so! Go to drive.google.com to get started.
3. Install OpenOffice
In case you are not using a Windows PC, then you can install OpenOffice, which can read .Docx files. I would suggest you to download OpenOffice Portable onto your flash drive to make the process easier.
Convert .Docx file to your preferred format
This was what I used to do initially when Microsoft had just introduced the .Docx format. Though there are some freeware available to convert .docx to .doc and other formats, it is better to use these online tools for converting .docx to .doc

The Docx-converter Dashboard Widget allows you to convert files right from your desktop. Simply drag the .docx file you want to convert into the drop area of the widget, and the widget will automatically convert the file and save it to the location of the original file.

Using ThinkFree
This online-based word editor is similar to Google docs and allows you to open and view your .docx file with ease. Just opening.Docx file doesn’t need any registration, but if you need to edit and save the documents, you should sign up with them.
Using Internet Explorer
In case you don’t have MS Office and are not connected to the internet as well, even then, you can view the .docx file using IE. The guide here shows you how to do so. Rename the .docx file to .zip, extract using WinZip, open the “Word” folder, look for document.xml and open this .xml file in Internet explorer
Using Word 2007 Viewer
This Microsoft tool lets you view Docx Word documents, even if you don’t have any version of Word installed. You will still need to install the Office Compatibility Pack. Download Word 2007 Viewer
Using TextEdit
This is a Mac-only solution. The TextEdit program that comes with OSX can create, edit, open, and save documents in Docx format. Alternately, you can also use NeoOffice/J freeware.

Using Microsoft Word Online on a Computer
You can visit Office.com on your favorite web browser to open and edit .docx files. You will be asked to log in to your Microsoft account, and then you are good to go. This is very similar to the Google Docs option we mentioned earlier in this article.
Using Microsoft Word Mobile
That’s right. Microsoft has a free app for Android and iOS devices to open .docx and other Microsoft Word supported file formats right from your smartphone or tablet.

How to open docx file in android phone?
This is pretty straightforward. Two of the best document editing apps on the Play Store (and App store) can do that without breaking a sweat. Download either Microsoft Word or Google Drive. There are other options like WPS Mobile, but you don’t have to look beyond the top two word apps we mentioned above.
Why can’t I open docx files?
Certain Docx files can’t be opened due to the reason; that the docx file may be corrupted or it may be password protected. You may try the following methods to open a corrupt .docx file.
