What is a DOC file?

DOC files have multiple uses, and Microsoft Word Document is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Microsoft Word Document

Files with the .doc extension are document files that have been created by Microsoft Word. The .doc format is one of the most popular formats for computer-created word-processing documents. These files can contain text, pictures, graphs, and charts.

While the 2007 and later versions of Microsoft Word currently save documents with the .docx extension, earlier versions of the software save documents with a .doc extension.

Although later versions of Word do save documents with the .docx format as a default, these programs can also save and open documents with the .doc file extension.

Other software applications use DOC files for other purposes, and Microsoft Word cannot open these files. You will find a list of them below. If you are unsure which type of file you have come across, use our File Analyzer to find out exactly what type of file yours is.

DOC File Complications

Issues Opening DOC Files

Apache OpenOffice is Not Installed

You encounter an error message such as «%%os%% Can’t Open DOC Files» when trying to open your DOC. Customarily, this means that Apache OpenOffice is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your DOC with Apache OpenOffice, so double-clicking the file won’t work.

Tip: If you don’t have Apache OpenOffice installed, and you know of another program to open your DOC file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under «Show Apps».

Outdated Apache OpenOffice

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft Word Document (before The 2007 Version) file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Apache Software Foundation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Apache OpenOffice. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Word Document (before The 2007 Version) file version that was created by a newer version of Apache OpenOffice than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your DOC file, then select «Properties» (Windows) or «Get Info» (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the DOC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Apache OpenOffice installed.

Other DOC File Issues

Although you might already have Apache OpenOffice or another DOC-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Microsoft Word Document (before The 2007 Version) files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading DOC files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:

  • DOC file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the DOC file in the Windows registry
  • Partial installation of Apache OpenOffice that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your DOC
  • Malware-tainted DOC file can’t be opened
  • Hardware associated with DOC has outdated drivers
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Word Document (before The 2007 Version) format

What is a DOC file?

A DOC file is a word processing document created by Microsoft Word or exported by another word processing program, such as OpenOffice Writer or Apple Pages. It may contain formatted text, images, tables, graphs, charts, page formatting, and print settings.

More Information

Screenshot of a .doc file in Microsoft Word 365

DOC file open in Microsoft Word 365

DOC files are created to save various documents, including letters, resumes, essays, and invitations. When you create a document in Word, you can choose to save it in the DOC file format. The program then creates a DOC file to store the document’s contents, which can be closed and opened again for further editing. When you are done editing your DOC file you can print it or save it as another file, such as a .PDF or .DOT document.

The DOC file was designated as Microsoft Word’s primary format in 1983. Word used the same format until Word 97 when Microsoft released an updated version of the binary format. In 2006, Microsoft replaced the updated DOC file format with the .DOCX file format when it released Word 2007. DOCX files store documents in the Open XML format.

NOTE: Word is the most popular word processing application in the world. It comes with every edition of the Microsoft Office suite and is used in home, academic, and business environments.

Common DOC Filenames

Document1.doc — The default filename that Microsoft Word gives to new documents prior to Word 2007 (Word 2007 and later uses Document1.docx by default).

How to open a DOC file

You can open DOC files with Microsoft Word in Windows and macOS. Word is the best application for opening DOC files because it fully supports the formatting of Word documents, which includes text spacing and alignment, images, charts, and tables. The word processor is also available for Android and iOS devices.

You can also open DOC files with other word processors, but some of the formatting of the original documents may be altered or lost. Some word processors that support DOC files include Corel WordPerfect (Windows), Apple Pages (Mac), and Apache OpenOffice Writer (multiplatform).

You can also open DOC files with various web programs. Google Docs is a free web application that allows you to upload a DOC file and view, edit, save, and convert the document.

How to convert a DOC file

Various word processing applications, including Microsoft Word, Corel Wordperfect, and OpenOffice Writer, can convert DOC files to other formats.

For example, in the Windows and Mac versions of Microsoft Word, select File → Save As to convert DOC files to one of the following formats:

  • .DOCX — Microsoft Word Document
  • .PDF — Portable Document Format
  • .ODT — OpenDocument Text Document
  • .XPS — XML Paper Specification (Windows only)
  • .RTF — Rich Text Format
  • .TXT — Plain Text
  • .HTM, .HTML — HTML Webpage
  • .XML — Extensible Markup Language
  • .MHT, .MHTML — MIME HTML Archive
