Excel not cutting and pasting

For those of you who read through all of these answers and did all of these things to no avail, I have another thing for you to try that worked for me. Like you, I read and did all of these things and they didn’t help.

In my case, Office 2010 version of Excel (32bit) on Windows 7, the program would freeze for MINUTES not seconds.

I noticed that the amount of RAM that Excel.exe was using would approximately triple while the program was frozen, and that dwm.exe was using about one core of CPU (12-13% on a quad-core w/ HT versus 1-3%). I used Process Explorer and took a complete dump of Excel while it was frozen, then installed and ran WinDBG (good beginner guide which is all I used found here), and learned that there was «heap corruption».

In this case, Windows updates hadn’t been applied for YEARS, and I found out Service Pack 2 for Office 2010 was one of them (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39667). This computer was also being offered an update KB3078667 which has to do with a memory leak that occurs in Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe).

After installing and rebooting, the problem went away. Hope this helps somebody else out there, as it’s not just exclusive to Office 2010.

This security bulletin is applicable, look at it and see if you have this update installed or a superseding one that has one of these in it, if not, installing one of these may ameliorate your problem.

  • I, in fact two end users have seen a strange issue in Excel.  When they CTRL+X to cut some cells and CTRL+V to paste, it does copy/paste, not cut/paste They said it is related to the new version addin I built. I do not use or change anything about
copy/cut/paste in my code at all.  I suspect it is some options in Excel, but not sure what it is.  Do anyone know how to fix the cut/paste issue in Excel?

Yesterday I encountered a user who could not cut-and-paste in Microsoft Excel. The options to Cut, Copy, and Paste where disabled — aka ‘greyed out’ — in the menus. Seems like an odd condition.

The conclusion is that Excel’s configuration had become corrupted. Resolution involves exiting Excel, deleting Excel’s customized configuration, and then restarting the application. Lacking a set of configuration files the application regenerates a new default configuration and cut-and-paste functionality is restored.

Excel stores its per-user configuration in XLB files in the %%PROFILEDIR%%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftExcel folder. Navigate to this folder and delete all the XLB files — with all Microsoft Office applications shutdown.

After resolving this issue I found a more user approachable solution — no diddling in the file-system — but with Excel now working I was not able to verify it [and I do not know how to deliberately corrupt Excel’s configuration].

  1. Right click on a sheet tab and select «View Code»
  2. From the «View» menu select «Immediate Window» if it’s not already displayed.
  3. Paste the following into the «Immediate Window» and press enter: Commandbars(«Cell»).Reset

Of course, deleting the per-user configuration in Excel will delete the user’s customizations.

when I cut and paste a cell, excel only copies it. Also, I don’t have paste special options available. I used to get dotted line around the cell(s) when I copy or cut but I don’t get that anymore. Please help.

I tried all the following options and nothing works.

Disable all add ons.
Remove skype to call. I also turned off skype and closed the skype.exe from task manager
Typed «Commandbars(«Cell»).Reset» in immediate window of VBA

Excel Facts

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?

{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.

Office 14.

C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14

I have windows 7 64 bit. I didn’t have this problem until two weeks ago and I am trying to figure out what I did two weeks ago.

I did close Skype and the problem seems to go away then today I close skype and problem didn’t go away. In both times I make sure that skype.exe was not running.

cut & paste function not working

I need some help with the Cut and Paste function in Excel 2007. The Cut function stopped working correctly after I tried to copy some data from a table in a PPT file. Now when I try to Cut a cell from any Excel document (new and old) the values of the cell are copied only, leaving the original data still in the Cut cell. The options for Paste Values, Paste Formulas, etc are also greyed out in the menu. Only the values of the cells are copied to the new cell, not any formulas. Also the highlight that surrounds the cell in either Copy or Cut mode is no longer present, but the values are copied to the clipboard. No macros are running, I have tried running it in safe mode for the same result. Opening the spreadsheet on a different computer works correctly. Closing/Opening the file or rebooting the PC does not solve the problem. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Re: cut & paste function not working

I am having the same problem as described above. I have always used the shortcuts for copy and paste and now the shortcuts for cut nor the pull down menu for cut and paste are working correctly in Excel 2007. I did update some software on my laptop the same day that this issue started. In my online research, I read that it could be possibly tied to Java updates or Windows Live updates — both of which I did that same day. It seems reasonable that it could be tied to some sort of update when more than one person is having the same issue occur within just a few days of one another — something that prior to now had always worked correctly. Thanks for any help you can provide.
