Excel and word not working

I get a «stopped working» error when I start Office applications on my PC

You might get this error when you start the Office 2021, Office 2019, Office 2016, or Office 2013 versions of Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, or Visio on your PC:

Microsoft Excel has stopped working.

Microsoft Word has stopped working.

Microsoft Outlook has stopped working.

Microsoft PowerPoint has stopped working.

Microsoft Visio has stopped working.

Microsoft Publisher has stopped working.

Before you try any of the resolutions in this article, it’s important to make sure that Office is fully up-to-date. If you still get «stopped working» errors after installing Office updates, choose Most Office apps or Outlook and follow the troubleshooting options in the order they are presented.

Try these solutions in the order listed below.

Instructions on this tab apply to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Visio. Click the header for more instructions.

  1. Open any Office app, such as Word, and create a new document.

  2. Go to File > Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook).

  3. Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now.

Note: You may need to click Enable Updates first if you don’t see the Update Now option right away.

  4. Close the You’re up to date! window after Office is done checking for and installing updates.

Certain add-ins may cause compatibility issues that cause a «stopped working» error with Office apps. A quick way to find out is by starting the Office app in Safe Mode. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Search icon and type «run», then click the Run app that appears in the search results.

    • In Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Window 8, right-click the Start button Windows Start button in Windows 8 and Windows 10 (lower-left corner), and choose Run.

    • In Windows 7, click Start > Run.

  2. Type one of these commands:

Note: If you get a «can’t find» error after typing the command, check if you included a space between the app name and /safe.

    • Type excel /safe and press Enter to start Excel.

    • Type winword /safe and press Enter to start Word.

    • Type powerpnt /safe and press Enter to start PowerPoint.

    • Type mspub /safe and press Enter to start Publisher.

    • Type visio /safe and press Enter to start Visio.

To ensure the Office app is in Safe Mode, check the title bar. You should see something like: Microsoft Excel (Safe Mode).

If the Office app doesn’t start in Safe Mode, the problem isn’t with add-ins. Try repairing Office or uninstalling and reinstalling it instead. If that still doesn’t work, you should have the latest device drivers installed on your PC.

If the Office app starts in Safe Mode, disable the application add-ins and COM add-ins one at a time:

  1. With the Office app still in Safe Mode, click File > Options > Add-Ins.

  2. Check the Manage list for Add-ins options, such as Word Add-ins or Excel Add-ins, and then click Go. If you can’t find an Add-ins option specific to the Office app in the Manage list, choose COM Add-ins instead.

  3. Uncheck one of the add-ins in the list and click OK.

Note: Some older add-ins are known to cause problems. Uncheck these add-ins first if they are in your list: Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord and Dragon Naturally Speaking.

  4. Restart the application (not in Safe Mode this time).

If the Office app starts, there’s a problem with the add-in you unchecked. We recommend you visit the company website for the add-in to check for an updated version you can install. If there isn’t a newer version or if you don’t need to use the add-in you can leave it unchecked or remove it from your PC.

If the Office app doesn’t start, repeat the steps to uncheck the other add-ins one by one. If there was another Add-ins option in the Manage list, such as COM Add-ins, repeat this process for those add-ins as well. If all add-ins are unchecked and you still can’t open your Office application, the problem isn’t related to add-ins. Try some of the other troubleshooting options provided in this article.

Older versions of these add-ins are known to cause problems with Office 2016 or Office 2013 applications:

  • ABBYY FineReader

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking

Maybe some other features installed on your computer are interfering with Office, preventing you from accessing it. In both cases, installing fresh updates can resolve the problem.

  3. Now, just click on the Data key, and delete it.
  4. Restart your computer.

If you specifically have problems with opening Word, we’ll try to delete some registry keys. Hopefully, the program will work after that.

11. Remove old printer drivers

And finally, some users have also reported that having old printer drivers installed on your Windows 10 PC prevents Microsoft Office from working. You have to remove your old printer drivers and install up-to-date ones.

Alternatively, you can use dedicated uninstaller software to automatically remove old printer drivers from your PC.

Third-party uninstaller software can scan your PC for any leftover files related to your specific app and permanently remove them.

After you finish removing your old drivers, check to see if the problem persists.

That’s about it. We certainly hope at least one of these solutions helped you resolve the problem with Microsoft Office.

Keep in mind that this problem mainly occurs with Microsoft Word. However, we’ve detailed solutions that apply to all Office programs, nevertheless:

  • Microsoft Office won’t open on Windows 10
    • Even more, you may face the unfortunate situation of having Office completely unable to open. Apply the above solutions and confirm the one that’s successful in your case.

Read: PowerPoint is not responding, keeps crashing, freezing, hanging or has stopped working.

6] Troubleshoot in a Clean Boot state

One possible cause of the problem that you are currently facing is the conflict between the Office application and a third-party application. To identify the problematic software, start your computer in a Clean Boot state and then open the Office application. If the problem disappears in the Clean Boot state, one of the disabled applications is the culprit. Now, enable some of the disabled programs in the Clean Boot state and then launch your computer in the normal mode. Launch the affected Microsoft Office application. If the problem occurs, one of the apps that you have just enabled is causing the problem. Start disabling those enabled apps one by one and launch the Office application each time you disable the app. This process will help you identify the problematic app.

Once you find the problematic app or software, consider uninstalling it. Or you can check if there is an updated version available for the software on its official website. If yes, install its latest version.

7] Uninstall and reinstall Office

The last step to get rid of this error on Office applications is to uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office. You can uninstall Office either from the Control panel or from the Windows 11/10 Settings app.

Microsoft Office
Windows
Windows
Word

  • C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14
  • C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14

Windows.

Microsoft Office

Windows

Windows

Windows”.

Word/Excel/PowerPoint.

Word

    • Word 2002: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0WordData
    • Microsoft Word 2003: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0WordData
    • Word 2007: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice12.0WordData
    • Word 2010 : HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice14.0WordData
    • Microsoft Word 2013: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice15.0Word
    • Word 2016: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0Word

Microsoft Office.

This worked out great! Don’t forget to back up before performing any registry deletions.

So for background, I’ve had my pc for about two years now but have just bought a new CPU, GPU and completely revamped my system. I also have an enterprise version of Office 365 because I need it for my job. I used to have no problem opening up any excel of word files but it has now become a problem because I can’t access files in either applications.

The problem happens whenever I try to open an excel or word file. I am able to click on the file and it’ll show the word logo and it’ll say loading and then it will crash, the same thing will happen with excel files. The thing is, sometimes it will work and I will be able to open a file successfully but that happens very far and few between. I have tried reinstalling office 365 multiple times and that has done nothing, PowerPoint and Outlook still work perfectly so I am confused on what the issue is. I also don’t have any add-ins for either excel or word so I doubt there is a problem with corrupt files. If anyone has any idea of what I can do I would be super appreciative. Thanks.

Microsoft Word is probably the best-known word processing software on the market. In fact, many people use the term “Word” generically to refer to any word processing program. Despite years of development and widespread use, the Word application doesn’t always run smoothly. Often, Word freezes during startup or will not open a file. In many cases, the problem is not caused by Word itself, but by previously installed add-ins, macros, or antivirus software. Corrupted documents or templates can also prevent Word from responding when you launch it.

  6. Change the Windows default printer
  7. Problems with antivirus software

Restart and install updates

This simple trick will often resolve the issue:

  1. Instead of openingWord by double-clicking a document, click the application icon.
  2. Create a new document and save it. In most cases, you can then open Word as usual by double-clicking on a document after that.

Missing updates in the program are another common source of the problem. Sometimes, Microsoft Word stops working or fails to open if the latest updates have not been installed and you’re using newer macros or Windows system components. Make sure that both Word and Windows are automatically updated on a regular basis.

Tip

Microsoft 365, formerly known as “Microsoft Office 365” is a server-based Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for personal users and small businesses. With Microsoft 365, you always automatically have the latest version and never have to worry about updates.

Here’s how to receive automatic updates:

  1. In the Windows 10 settings app, choose “Update and Security” and then “Windows Update” and click on “Advanced options” at the bottom of the screen.
  2. In the next window, turn on “Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows”. This means that Windows Update will automatically search for updates for Word and other Office components and install them in the background along with Windows security updates.

Start Word in Safe Mode

You can start Word in Safe Mode, as you would if you were having difficulties starting Windows. Safe Mode bypasses add-ins, macros, customized toolbars, or templates that are loaded automatically at startup. There are two ways to start Word in Safe Mode:

  1. Hold down the Ctrl key while double-clicking the Word icon to open the application. Word then starts in Safe Mode.
  2. Alternatively, you can use the “/safe” command to open Word. To do this, use the keyboard shortcut Windows logo key + R and enter “winword /safe”.

Automatic Office Repair

Microsoft has a built-in Office Repair utility that you can use to fix many problems that cause Office applications like Word to stop responding.

  1. This repair feature can be found in the Windows 10 settings under “Apps”.
  2. Search the list for “Microsoft Office” and click on “Modify”.
  3. Choose “Yes” when prompted by User Account Control to confirm.
  4. In the next dialog box, you can choose to add or remove further features or repair the entire Office suite. If the repair is successful, you’ll usually be able to launch Word without any issues.

There is also an automatic document recovery feature that opens if documents were not saved the last time you closed Word. The next time you launch Word, the software will try to recover unsaved Word documents automatically.

Disable Word add-ins

If Word works in Safe Mode but doesn’t start properly other time, the problem is usually caused by a previously installed add-in.

  1. Click on “Options” on the “File” tab on the ribbon.
  2. In the next dialog box, select the “Add-ins” section in the sidebar. All installed add-ins will be listed.
  3. In the “Manage” drop-down menu at the bottom of the dialog box, select “COM Add-ins” and click on “Go”.
  4. Uncheck the box for all COM add-ins in the list to start Word without these potentially problematic add-ins. Select “OK” and then restart Word. If an incompatible add-in was causing Word to stop working, the application should now run without any issues.
Disabling COM add-ins
COM add-ins can cause Word to stop working

In this dialog box, you can re-enable individualWordadd-ins one by one to locate the problem add-in. If possible, install a new version of the incompatible add-in. Otherwise, remove it or leave it inactive until the vendor provides an update.

Delete Normal.dotm

Word uses the Normal.dotm template for all new documents. This template includes default styles, customized ribbons, and other settings. An error in this template can cause Word to stop working.

  1. First, close Word.
  2. Rename the “Normal.dotm” file in the folder C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates. For example, you could rename it to “_Normal.dotm”.
  3. When you restart Word, a new default template will be created automatically. Any custom styles or other customizations will be lost.

Change the Windows default printer

Like all Microsoft Office applications, Word accesses information from the installed default printer to match the layout of documents on the screen as closely as possible to the print layout. If the default printer driver does not work or the default printer is not connected, Word may fail to open.

  1. In the Windows 10 settings, go to “Devices” and then “Printers & scanners” and set a working printer as the default printer. For example, choose the preinstalled “Microsoft Print to PDF” printer.
  2. Restart Word. The problem should now be resolved if it was caused by the printer settings.
Managing printers
You can specify the default printer in the Settings app under “Printers & scanners”.

Problems with antivirus software

Third-party antivirus software can cause Word to freeze when you open it or prevent it from opening at all. Some antivirus software does not recognize Word macros or add-ins correctly and blocks them. In many cases, an error message is not even displayed when this happens.

  1. Check the scan logof your antivirus software to see whether Word or a certain add-in was blocked.
  2. If you can’t find anything in the log, try to start Word with the antivirus software turned off. If this solves the problem, the antivirus software was most likely the culprit.
  3. Go to the settings of your antivirus software and try to exclude Word and other Microsoft Office components as well as all add-ins you want to use. You are less likely to have any issues opening Word and other Microsoft applications if you use the Microsoft Defender Antivirus software included in Windows 10 instead of third-party antivirus programs.

Hi Guys,

We are having a problem with numerous staff, where they open an excel or word file, and the program goes not responding, sometimes it lasts 5-20 seconds, but other times it takes more than 5 minutes to come good. It doesn’t happen every time, but often enough that I have several open tickets regarding the problem.

It can happen to files on network share or local files.

I have had the users make sure the files are saved as xlsx instead of xls.

I have tried disabling the antivirus (Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1), no difference.

All running 64 bit win 7, and 32 bit Office 2010, with no office addons, this did not happen on 32bit XP, with Office 2010.

I can see from different forums that many people have had this issue, but none seem to have a resolution. Has anyone overcome this problem?

Cheers
