These are a few Mono-Syllable words (One-Syllable WORDS). Understanding syllables is key to understanding word stress. A syllable can be described as a unit in pronunciation. A syllable can be a single vowel sound or contain one vowel and one or more consonant sounds. With a few exceptions, every syllable has at least one vowel. Each word is composed of syllables. Each word can have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine or even more syllables.

Three Syllable Words Definition

A word having s three sounds is called a three-syllable word. Some words have three units of sound, which means they have three syllables.

A word having three syllables is called trisyllabic word. e.g. Adequate, Amazement, Attention, Attractive, Average, Banana, Bicycle, Blindingly, Buffalo, Cabinet, Certainly, Companion etc.

‘Avocado’ has three syllables, and ‘Conference’ has three syllables.

Four syllable words typically are stressed on the first or second syllables, but not on the final syllable. There are a few rules to determine the stress of a four words with syllabic letters.

  1. Four syllable words ending with ‘sm’ and “or” such as INterior Incubator, TRIbalism etc. are stressed on the first vowel.
  2. When words that are Four-syllabic end with the words’my’ and ‘ny’, they place their emphasis on one of the syllables. For example, maTRImony, aNATomy.
  3. Four syllable words ending with ‘ate’, ‘er”‘,” ‘ty’ and ‘phy as well as “ent” are stressed in the 2nd syllable. Examples include psyCHOlogy, matriculate.
  4. Four syllable word endings that end in ‘ion”, ‘ian “ous,” “ial” are stressed at the end of the third syllable. Examples: teleVIsion poliTIcian and presiDENtial.

Why do Three syllable words matter?

As we have said, three syllable words are important because talking to people doesn’t mean we want to bore them with long words. Instead, we want to get the point across as quickly and efficiently as possible.

You may need to use two-syllable words at times because there aren’t any longer words that will not change your point.

How to teach three syllable words in primary school?

To help children understand the concept of three syllable words, teachers will often ask them to get their children to clap the syllables for a word. To introduce syllables, ask children to stand up and speak their name while simultaneously clapping the syllables.
