The above table contains all you need to insert
the Euro symbol into Word.

However, if you are not satisfied with this quick
help, below is a detailed guide on how to insert the Euro symbol using several
methods including keyboard shortcut, using the Alt code, using AutoCorrect, or simple
copy and paste.

In Microsoft Word, you can effortlessly type some special symbols directly from your keyboard. One is the copyright symbol ©, which you can insert by entering the text (C) and letting the AutoCorrect handle the rest.

There are other symbols which are readily
available as second keys on the keyboard. One is the % symbol, which you can
insert by pressing Shift+5 keys combination.

Other symbols, however, aren’t that easy to type using the keyboard. One is the Euro symbol (€) on some keyboards.

To insert this Euro sign, you need to tap Word’s library of symbols or use the symbol’s Alt code, or the Euro symbol shortcut.

Below are two easy steps to insert the Euro
sign in Word.

  • On the Insert tab,
click the Symbol button and choose More Symbols…

These few clicks will display the Symbol dialog
box. Now it’s time to hunt for the Euro symbol.

Scroll down or up until you find the Euro sign
in the symbol’s library.

  • Select the Euro symbol, and
    then click Insert.

Alternatively, you can double-click on the symbol to insert it into your document.

Euro symbol alt code

Every character or symbol in Word has an Alt code which you can use to insert that character or symbol into your document.

The Alt code for the Euro symbol is 0128.

Below are the steps to type the Euro symbol on your keyboard using the Alt code:

  • Turn on your Num Lock. Use Fn key plus NumLk
to turn on Num Lock on laptops without numeric keypad.
  • Whilst holding down the [Alt] key, type [0128]
on the numeric keypad (on the right).
  • Then release the [Alt] key. The Euro () symbol
    should appear in your document.

NOTE: Click here to learn how to use the numeric keypad on a laptop without a numeric keypad.

Euro symbol shortcut

Aside from using the Alt code on the keyboard, the Euro symbol also has another keyboard shortcut you can use to insert it into your Word document.

Here is the shortcut: Alt+Ctrl+E

The hotkeys above will insert the symbol for you.

NOTE: The Euro symbol shortcut only works in MS Word. It might not work if you try it in any other software.

Copy and paste the Euro symbol

This is yet another simple method.

Aside from using the symbol library and the alt code, you can also copy and paste the Euro symbol if it already exists in your document. Or you can copy it from somewhere else like a web page.

Below
is the Euro symbol if you want to copy and paste:

Using Word AutoCorrect to type a Euro sign

Another way to obtain the Euro symbol is
through AutoCorrect. Very interesting trick.

The AutoCorrect is a facility designed for
correcting spelling mistakes like adn to and.

Using this feature, you can assign a code to the Euro symbol (such as ERSYM).

This way, whenever you type the text ERSYM, Word will think that you actually wanted to type and will convert it into a Euro symbol automatically.

What makes this approach interesting is that
you can assign any code you want to the symbol and Word will be more than glad
to give you a Euro sign whenever you type the code.

Without further ado, here are the steps involved in using AutoCorrect to insert the Euro symbol in Word.

  • Click to select the Euro
    symbol.
  • Click on the AutoCorrect…
button to display the AutoCorrect dialog.
symbol for euro
  • In the Replace: box, type ERSYM – (or any AutoCorrect text you want to assign to the Euro symbol)
  • In the With: box, make sure it contains the Euro symbol. Use Alt+0128 (on the numeric keypad) to insert or copy and paste from a document or a webpage.

  • Click Add, then click
    OK.

Word will automatically insert the Euro symbol
as soon as you type ERSYM anywhere in your document.

Below are some few things to note when you are using the AutoCorrect Method to insert symbols:

  • AutoCorrect is case sensitive. Meaning if you type ersym, Word will not convert it into the Euro symbol unless you type ERSYM (in uppercase).
  • If there is any text before ERSYM, Word will consider the code as part of the text and hence will not convert it to the Euro symbol. For example, XERSYM will not get converted, but X ERSYM will get converted to X €.

A. If in the above question you see the euro symbol you have either Service Pack 4 installed, the euro hotix for Service Pack 3, or Windows 2000, if you see something else you need to install either of the aforementioned fixes or you are not using Internet Explorer. Netscape does not seem to understand the euro symbol. Also the fix also applies to True Type fonts and not Postscript.

Once installed to type the euro symbol just press <Ctrl + Alt + 4> at the same time.

The keys used may be different in other European countries, e.g. its <Ctrl + Alt + 5> on a Swedish keyboard (so I’m informed) or <Alt Gr + E>

For NT4 Terminal Server edition, with only service pack 3 installed, one could download from Microsoft a patch name EUROFIXI.exe, This patch is included in service pack 4 for the Terminal Server Edition.

Under the Terminal Server / Citrix Environment one could use also ALT 0128 for the € sign (US keyboard layout & settings).

There is a wide variety of operating systems, language settings and keyboard layouts — each with a specific key combination to display the Euro symbol. Please try one of these options listed below.
