Breakfast Vocabulary – Easy English

Who loves breakfast? Some people say that breakfast is the most important meal (food time) of the day. I love eating a lazy (relaxed, slow) breakfast on the weekend. But when you are learning a language, you may have to learn some breakfast vocabulary on your own (alone, by yourself). It’s not always taught (teach/taught/taught) in class! Breakfast vocabulary may not be the most common (seen, happen a lot) lesson, but is good to know and a good way to start the day!
Be ready for your next breakfast date (meet-up, appointment) with this breakfast vocabulary!
To go to brunch
Do you enjoy (like) going to brunch? The word “brunch” is the combination of breakfast and lunch. Lots of people go out to brunch on the weekend. If you go for brunch, you will likely (probably) go in the late morning or early afternoon. They may have a mix of breakfast foods and lunch foods. Going for brunch can be a lot of fun! It’s a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning.
For example:
- Would you like to go for brunch with me on Saturday?
- What do you like to eat for brunch? I like having an omelette and cream cheese bagel.
Brew coffee
I love coffee. It’s my favorite hot drink. For me, coffee is the most important breakfast vocabulary word! But how do you make coffee? Do you cook it? Or boil it? No! You brew coffee. How you brew coffee depends on what kind of coffee maker (the machine you brew coffee in) you have. But coffee is brewed using coffee beans and water. How you like your coffee will decide (effect) how you make your coffee. How do you like to brew your coffee?
For example:
- Can you please brew some coffee? Our friends are coming over for breakfast in 20 minutes.
- Should I brew some more coffee? Or has everyone had enough?
Make pancakes
What kind of pancakes do you like to make? Do you like thin, European-style pancakes, or do you like thick, American-style pancakes? No matter which kind you prefer (like), pancakes are a great breakfast food. They are delicious and easy to make. If you know how to make pancakes, they’re a great way to make people happy at breakfast.
For example:
- Her dad used to make pancakes for breakfast every Sunday.
- What kind of pancakes would you like me to make this weekend? Chocolate chip? Banana?
Cook eggs
Do you like to eat eggs? Eggs are a classic (traditional, normal) part of breakfast. They are a great way to start out the day. There are many different ways to cook eggs. People like to cook their eggs in different ways. Some like them scrambled (stirred together and cooked all the way through), poached (boiled), or sunny side up (cooked in a pan with a runny yellow). Do you enjoy cooking eggs for breakfast? Or do you like to eat something else?
For example:
- I cooked some eggs for breakfast, and ate them with toast and coffee.
- They like their eggs cooked in different ways. She likes hers poached, and he likes his scrambled.
Hot breakfast/Cold breakfast
While you may think that a classic breakfast is always hot, this isn’t quite (completely) true. You can have a hot breakfast or a cold breakfast. A hot breakfast is where the foods are warm, like eggs, toast, or pancakes. A cold breakfast is where the food is cold, like cereal or yogurt. A hot breakfast usually takes more preparation (cooking/making) than a cold breakfast. Both hot and cold breakfasts are great ways to start the day!
For example:
- He eats a hot breakfast on the weekend, and a cold breakfast during the week.
- I prefer to eat a cold breakfast in the summer when it’s hot outside.
Continental breakfast
Have you ever been to a hotel and seen that they have a “free continental breakfast”? What exactly is a continental breakfast? A continental breakfast is a light (simple/not much) breakfast served in restaurants or hotels. It usually has bread, jam, yogurt, fruit, cereal, and tea and coffee. A continental breakfast is very simple and is easy for hotels to serve. Enjoying a continental breakfast can be a good way to eat something before an important business meeting or a day on vacation.
For example:
- Should we have the continental breakfast at the hotel? Or would you like to go out for breakfast?
- We stayed at that hotel because they had a free continental breakfast. They had very good croissants!

Below is a massive list of breakfast words — that is, words related to breakfast. The top 4 are: brunch, lunch, coffee and meal. You can get the definition(s) of a word in the list below by tapping the question-mark icon next to it. The words at the top of the list are the ones most associated with breakfast, and as you go down the relatedness becomes more slight. By default, the words are sorted by relevance/relatedness, but you can also get the most common breakfast terms by using the menu below, and there’s also the option to sort the words alphabetically so you can get breakfast words starting with a particular letter. You can also filter the word list so it only shows words that are also related to another word of your choosing. So for example, you could enter «brunch» and click «filter», and it’d give you words that are related to breakfast and brunch.
You can highlight the terms by the frequency with which they occur in the written English language using the menu below. The frequency data is extracted from the English Wikipedia corpus, and updated regularly. If you just care about the words’ direct semantic similarity to breakfast, then there’s probably no need for this.
There are already a bunch of websites on the net that help you find synonyms for various words, but only a handful that help you find related, or even loosely associated words. So although you might see some synonyms of breakfast in the list below, many of the words below will have other relationships with breakfast — you could see a word with the exact opposite meaning in the word list, for example. So it’s the sort of list that would be useful for helping you build a breakfast vocabulary list, or just a general breakfast word list for whatever purpose, but it’s not necessarily going to be useful if you’re looking for words that mean the same thing as breakfast (though it still might be handy for that).
If you’re looking for names related to breakfast (e.g. business names, or pet names), this page might help you come up with ideas. The results below obviously aren’t all going to be applicable for the actual name of your pet/blog/startup/etc., but hopefully they get your mind working and help you see the links between various concepts. If your pet/blog/etc. has something to do with breakfast, then it’s obviously a good idea to use concepts or words to do with breakfast.
If you don’t find what you’re looking for in the list below, or if there’s some sort of bug and it’s not displaying breakfast related words, please send me feedback using this page. Thanks for using the site — I hope it is useful to you! 🐶
That’s about all the breakfast related words we’ve got! I hope this list of breakfast terms was useful to you in some way or another. The words down here at the bottom of the list will be in some way associated with breakfast, but perhaps tenuously (if you’ve currenly got it sorted by relevance, that is). If you have any feedback for the site, please share it here, but please note this is only a hobby project, so I may not be able to make regular updates to the site. Have a nice day! 🐌

Types of Breakfast
The following are some of the basic types of breakfast:
- Continental breakfast
- English breakfast
- American breakfast
- Indian breakfast
- Italian breakfast
- Hawaiian breakfast
The traditional continental breakfast, originated in France consists simply of hot croissant, brioche or toast, butter and coffee.
The English Breakfast consists: Choice of juices, Cereals, Eggs, Fish, Hot meat, Bread, Fresh Fruits, Cheese, Beverages (Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Milk etc.)
An American style breakfast includes most or all of the following: two eggs (fried or poached), sliced bacon or sausages, sliced bread or toast with jam/jelly/butter, pancakes with syrup, cornflakes or other cereal, coffee/tea, orange/grapefruit juice.
A breakfast plate in India might include roti (flatbread), dosas (thin crepes made of lentils) or idlis (steamed rice-dough pancakes), and different dips and chutneys, as well as spiced potatoes.
Italian breakfast
The typical breakfast consists of an espresso or cappuccino accompanied by cookies or a sweet pastry – usually a ‘cornetto’ – which is a lighter version of the French croissant, it’s less buttery and slightly crispy on the outside with a soft middle that could be either empty or filled with cream, chocolate, jam or a combination of fillings.
Hawaiian breakfast
Loco Moco is a Hawaiian style breakfast that is a local favorite. Basically the dish includes eggs, some type of meat (typically hamburger or Hawaiian sausage) over rice and gravy as an option. Of course breakfast is not complete without some tropical fruit and fresh papayas.
A typical breakfast in Germany starts off with a warm beverage such as coffee, tea or hot cocoa. Next follows bread or bread rolls with various spreads and toppings. These could include butter or margarine, jams or honey. These are the “typical” spreads, although there are others too! Quark (a type of curd cheese), wurst (sausage) and cheese are also popular. A glass of juice is also commonplace, as is a boiled egg. Cereals, nuts and dried fruit are also common.
