In this lesson, we will show you common English collocations with “have”, “do”, “make”, “take”, “break”, “catch”, “pay”, “save”, “keep”, “come”, “go” and “get”. In this 100+ collocations list that will enrich your vocabulary and help you to speak natural and fluent English.
You can also download collocations free PDF down below. Collocations are the word combinations, we use together in English. Word partnership or words that are commonly used together in English called collocations.
word + word = collocation
For example you can say “take a nap” but you can’t say “do a nap” or “make a nap“. “A quick shower” is a meaningful word pair in English but we can’t use “a fast shower” instead of that.
When you don’t use these word pairs properly and make mistakes, people will still understand you but you won’t sound fluent or natural at all. I recommend writing your own sentences with these collocations and take your time and don’t rush..!

Every word has its own meaning. You can search for the definition of every term in the dictionary. But do you know that you can put two words together and have a brand new meaning? Of course, not all words can be put together for such a case. However, many ones are already accepted in the English language. These words are called compound words.
What Are Compound Words?
Compound words are formed when two or more words are combined to produce a new one. This newly-constructed word has its own meaning that can either be related to the base words or not.
Types of Compound Words
Open Compound Words
Open compound words remain separate when written but are used together to create a new idea. For example, “peanut” and “butter” are unrelated to each other. But when you combine them and use them as one word, you will have “peanut butter,” which is already a different noun with its own meaning.
Closed Compound Words
Closed compound words are formed by combining two fully independent words together without space in between. An example of a closed-form compound word is “grandfather,” in which “grand” and “father” are put together.
Hyphenated Compound Words
Another possible form of a compound word is the hyphenated one. From the word itself, the independent terms used are separated by a hyphen or dash. A common example is “mother-in-law.”
Compound Nouns
Compound nouns are simply compound words that act as nouns. Nouns are names of people, animals, places, things, or events. However, it does not mean that the two words comprising it should only be nouns. A compound noun can be formed by combining two nouns, an adjective and a noun, a verb and a noun, and many more.
Compound Verbs
A compound verb is also called a complex predicate. It is a multi-word compound that acts as a single verb. It can be constructed by putting together a verb and a preposition or a verb and an adverb (phrasal verbs). Auxiliary verbs that are followed by the main verb can also be considered compounds. Some other combinations that involve a verb and a non-verb word can also be considered compound verbs if they indicate action.
Compound Adjectives
Two or more words that function as one and describe a noun are called compound adjectives. Usually, they are separated by a hyphen.

Compound Words | Images
What are Compound Words?
Compound words are made by joining two or more words; the combination creates a new word. They can be formed using two nouns, e.g. basketball, two non-nouns, e.g. blowup, or a noun and non-noun, e.g. sunrise. It is important to note that the words do not always keep their original meaning, e.g. breakfast. Our list of compound words contains 500 words.
There are three types of compound words:
- Closed compound words, e.g., football, peanut,
- Open compound words, e.g., cell phone, high school, and
- Hyphenated compound words, e.g., in-depth, runner-up.
List of Compound Words
To determine if a compound word is one word, two words or hyphenated, use a dictionary to look up the word or our lists below. The list below excludes both fractions and compound numbers from 21 to 91. These words are hyphenated, e.g., two-thirds, one-half, thirty-nine and ninety-one.

Basic English consists of 850 words that can express the meanings that can be found in a pocket dictionary. This is then expanded with 100 words of a general area of interest — science or business, and 50 words of a specialty within that general area. Thus any student’s vocabulary is 1,000 words, plus certain prefixes and suffixes. A list of international words is assumed to be known. Compound words made up of Basic words, where the origin makes sense, are also allowed. As are new words made from adding the allowed endings, -er, -ed, -ing. Ogden provides a growth plan, the First Addendum and the Next Step to the 2,000 word level. He considers the 2,000 word level to have achieved standard English. Therefore, this list approximates a minimum standard English wordlist whereafter the student can proceed on his own without difficulty.
This maximum Basic English word list must not be confused with the definition of Basic English as 850 words plus 150 specialty words. This maximum list is simply what the advanced student, with an interest in all general areas — not specialties — will know when transiting from the Basic English language to standard English language. It actually contains well over two thousand words. In fact, the student is expected to know one specialty (science, business, verse, etc.) topic with an additional 50 words that are not of interest to the general audience (chemistry, geology, economics, Bible, etc.).
VOA Special English has a 1,500 word vocabulary — expanded with prefix and suffix and an addendum of science words. VOA Special English is used every day in international news broadcasts — thus proving that a simple vocabulary is effective. As such, VOA Special English would be considered by Ogden to be a specialty area of international news. Ogden sought the advice of Radio Committees in different countries for a radio specialty word list and a preliminary list is included here. It consists of 248 words of general interest, not limited to news.
It will be interesting to compare VOA Special English with an approximately same sized lists of Basic English. Selection from the various Basic English lists to limit to 1,500 words will be somewhat arbitrary. Basic English 1500 will consist of the 850, the general topic areas, news parts of the radio specialty list, and enough of the Basic English «next step» list to make the 1,500 number. Direct comparison may not be totally appropriate, but it will be interesting to see what two lists of a 1,500 word level vocabulary (nominal) looks like. This page is preparatory to making a side by side listing.
