Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes come at the end of the document. A number or symbol on the footnote or endnote matches up with a reference mark in the document.

Word uses a number or symbol to associate the note with a reference point in the document

  1. Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote.

  2. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote.

    On the References tab choose Insert Footnote

  3. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote.

  4. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.

  3. On one of the odd pages, select the header or footer area you want to change.
  4. Type the document title, and then press Tab twice.
  5. Select Page Number > Current Position and choose a style.
  6. Select an even page.

  1. Select where you want a new section to begin.
  2. Go to Layout > Breaks.
  3. Choose the type of section break you want: Next Page Section break starts the new section on the following page. Continuous Section break starts the new section on the same page.

Footnotes and Endnotes Explained 

Footnotes and Endnotes can be used in a Word document to explain, provide references to or comment on something you have mentioned in the document. They help provide additional information that does not necessarily need to go in the main body of the document but is important to know.  

Footnotes usually appear at the bottom of the page, and endnotes come at the end of the document or section.  

Insert a Footnote 

In this example, we are going to add a footnote at the bottom of the page.  

  1. Click where you want to add a footnote 
  1. Click the References tab 
  1. From the Footnotes group, select Insert Footnote 

Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds a footnote mark at the bottom of the page. As this is the first footnote, it has a number 1 next to it. Type in the additional information you would like to include.  

To return to your place in the document, double-click on the footnote mark.  

Continue through the document adding footnotes where necessary.  

To be able to see the footnote when you hover over the reference, turn on Show Notes.

To navigate around the document by the footnotes, click the Next Footnote drop-down arrow and select an option.  

Insert an Endnote 

In this example, we are going to insert an endnote at the end of the document.  

  1. Click where you want to add an endnote 
  1. Click the References tab 
  1. From the Footnotes group, select Insert Endnote 

Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds an endnote mark at the end of the document.  

Customize Footnotes and Endnotes 

  1. Click the References tab 
  1. In the Footnotes group, click the diagonal arrow  

The footnotes and endnotes dialog box will open. From here, you can change the location of the footnotes and endnotes, change the layout, change the number formatting, specify which number to start at and if you want the numbering to be continuous or restart with each section.  

Printing Footnotes and Endnotes 

By default, when you send a document to the printer, the footnotes and endnotes do not print off. You can change this so that footnotes and endnotes print on their relevant pages.  

  1. Click the View tab 
  1. From the Views group, click Draft 
  1. Click the References tab 
  1. From the Footnotes group, click Show Notes 
  1. Select if you want to view footnotes or endnotes 

The Notes Pane will open at the bottom of the screen. This pane can be adjusted simply by dragging the diving border up or down.  

  1. Click the File tab 
  1. Click Print 

The footnotes will now appear on the Print Preview.

Citations, footnotes, and endnotes are important for academic writing.  Microsoft Word 2013 generates these items for the writer automatically. It can also make a table of figures and an index.  It would take much effort to do this manually, which is what publishers did for many years. Here is how to make a citation, footnote, and an endnote.

Definitions

Footnote: These are added at the bottom of the page.   The footnote number appears as a superscript, meaning it is slight higher than the text it follows:  word. The actual reference where you cite the referenced work is at located at the bottom of the page.

Endnote: These are the same as footnotes except they are added at the end of the document. In a book, these often appear at the end of a chapter, or they can be at the end of the book.

Citation: This replaces the footnote or endnote number with an abbreviation of an entry that appears in the bibliography.  You generate the bibliography where you want, but usually it goes at the end of the document.  Word generates the bibliography for you based upon the citations you create.

Footnotes and Endnotes

The way you create a footnote or an endnote is the same.  On the Reference menu, you just pick either Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote.  Then the cursor moves there where you enter the reference while the footnote or endnote number is located where you told Word to put the endnote or footnote.  Unlike citations, you have to format the footnote or endnote yourself, meaning you have to use take the name, publisher, web link, date web link accessed, author, and so forth that makes a footnote or endnote and put it into the format of the style guide you are using automatically. Citations in Word do all that automatically.

Citation

A citation is an abbreviation of a bibliographical entry that appears in the text.  On the Reference menu, you click Insert Citation.  If this is the first time you have referenced this work, you select Add New Source.  Otherwise, select one of the works already listed. Works are called “sources.”

You fill out the details of the reference, and then Word generates the citation according to the style you have chosen. In this example, I picked APA style.  There are lots of style guides like the Modern Language Association (MLA), the Chicago Style Guide (Chicago), and others.

  • Hello, I was in touch with the Microsoft Answer Desk last week, my Case number is 1386038086. I was told that my problem was too complex and that I should buy Word 2016 (I work with 2013). Before buying the 2016 version, I would need to be sure that my
    problem would be solved. Perhaps it is solvable in Word 2013.
    I wish to convert my scientific articles into Pdf documents, where the endnote links are alive, just as they are in the Word document. I just bought the novaPdf software, which keeps endnote links alive in the Pdf conversion. After converting, I noticed that
    the links do not work and wrote to novaPdf. They analyzed the document I sent them and replied that novaPDF interrogates Word about the destination page of the endnote and that my Word 2013 reports the last page of a document for all endnotes and that novaPdf
    therefore cannot help. The problem lies with Word. Thank you for your help! Evelin

  • Dear Ashidacchi! I am so thankful for your reply! I struggle with this for years, and have almost given up! I am hugely surprised that you managed to convert from Word 2013 to Pdf and keep the endnote links alive! Are you sure? Perhaps we do not speak
    about the same thing? I speak of the endnote superscript that you can click on in a text and that will bring you to the note (endnote/footnote). If I click on this superscript in the Pdf conversion, nothing happens. Therefore I finally bought NovaPdf, after
    long searches. At least the endnote-superscript is alive there, yet, the problem is that it leads to nowhere when one clicks on it. Another scholar sent me a Pdf file of here work where those links do work. Only in my case, it does not work. As NovaPdf told
    me after analyzing the document that I had sent them, the problem is that my Word 2013 reports the last page of a document for all endnotes. I miss the time of WordPerfect, where one could see codes. I also work with Dreamweaver and appreciate that one can
    see the codes there. I would love understanding how NovaPdf found out that my Word 2013 reports the last page of a document for all endnotes. Thank you so much for your kind care! Evelin

    Dear friend (I love your fox image!), please allow me to let you know that we have a great great misunderstanding, as it seems, concerning what we mean by «active link.» You seem to think that my problem is with hyperlinks to the internet.

    Dear friend, my problem is a completely different one.
    Let me explain once more: When you look at my Word text, and you see the first paragraph, then you see that it ends with these words: «…September 19-23, 2016» Then, after that you see a superscript, this is the first endnote in the text. When you
    click on it, you are transported to the text of the endnote. 
    Now: when you convert the Word document into a Pdf file the normal way, what do you see? You can not longer click on this endnote superscript and be transported to the endnote text. The superscript is no longer active. 
    Therefore I bought NovaPdf. As you see in the text I sent you via Dropbox, the text by Maggie McLure, it does work. 
    When you look at my text which I sent you and which I had converted with NovaPdf, and you click in the endnote-superscript, you will see that you are transported away, but not to the correct place.

    Dear friend, did you see the Pdf document by Maggie MacLure that I sent you via Dropbox? When you click on the endnote superscripts in that text, you see how clicking on them transports you to them. This is how my Word 2013 acts. I am very very puzzled by the
    fact that your Word 2013 seem not to act like that…. I have no explanation for that… Would you have any idea what to do now?

          (I selected FootNote 1)

      1.2 menu [Insert] > [Bookmark] > name its Bookmark
          (I named it as «fn_001»)

    2. Insert Link:


      2.1 select (high-light) words that will be a link source

      2.2 menu [Insert] > [Link]
      2.3 select a Bookmark that will be a link target
          *** before it, select [Place in This Document]
          *** and you will see Bookmarks

    3. Repeat 1 and 2

  • Wow, dear elder brother Ashidacchi, you are simply amazing! You found a way to work around the problem, simply great! I am not sure whether I can burden you with my further question: I have to convert many documents with thousands of endnotes. It would
    take me a year or more to follow your solution, which, as wonderful as it is, is very time-consuming. When you look at the Pdf file from Maggie MacLure, you see that she did not do that work, but that her endnote superscripts seem to be alive just like that.
    I wrote to her, asking her how she achieved that, but she has not replied (I do not know her personally). In other words, would you have the time to think up more automatic solutions? I would be eternally thankful!

    Yes, you are right, of course, we do not know how Maggie MacLure made her Pdf file. 
    Have another look at the Pdf file that I sent you via Dropbox, which I created with NovaPdf. There you see that the endnote superscripts indeed seem to behave like in Maggie MacLure’s document, and in the first moment, when I saw that, I was very happy. But
    then, when I clicked on these endnote-superscripts, I saw that they did not transport me to the correct place. Therefore I sent the file that you have to the NovaPdf people. They analyzed it and found out that the problem is not with NovaPdf, but that it is
    in my Word setup: My Word does not give the correct location of each endnote, but gives the end of the document to all endnotes. Therefore, NovaPdf cannot determine the correct location to be transported to.
