So you’ve written your letter, but how do you finish it? There are lots of ways to end a letter, depending on the type of letter you are writing. This wikiHow will teach you how to do it.

Sample Endings

  1. Image titled End a Letter Step 1

    1

    Review the letter. Before writing a conclusion, reread your letter and decide whether you are satisfied with the message you have written. Did you communicate your message clearly? Will it have the effect you want it to have on the recipient?

    • If you’re writing a cover letter or a business letter, make sure you’ve covered all of your bases before getting to the conclusion. The body of the letter should make the case that you’re a good candidate for the job; the conclusion serves only to wrap things up, so don’t save the most important information for last.[1]
    • No matter what kind of letter you’re writing, make sure it is written in such a way that the intent is understood. Letters, unlike some other forms of communication, have an element of permanency. Once you write something down it’s hard to take it back. Review the body of your letter with this in mind before moving to the ending.

    2

    Write a final paragraph. Write an ending in keeping with the tone of the rest of the letter. Did you write a brief, to-the-point letter, or was it a longer profession of love? Think of the last paragraph of your letter as a conclusion, in which you have the chance to restate the major themes of the message and leave your recipient with just the right feeling.[2]
    For example:

    • «My experience working at the Humane Society and leading the Paws for Peace group at my university will make me an excellent candidate for an internship at Boston Animal Hospital.»
    • «Celebrating Steve’s promotion, welcoming a new grandchild to the family and vacationing in Australia have made 2013 a year to remember for our family. We hope your family’s year has been equally well blessed.»
    • «I know I’ll smile every time I think about your visit. Our daytime excursions, long dinners and wild nights won’t soon be forgotten. I can’t wait until next time!»

    Write a final sentence. The very last sentence in a personal letter is a chance to wish the recipient well or request for him or her to write back. Make sure the last sentence matches your overall tone and hits just the right note.[3]

    • If you want to thank the recipient for taking the time to meet with you in a professional setting, consider «Thank you for taking the time to meet with me on Tuesday» or «Thank you for your time and consideration.»
    • If you’d like the recipient to write a letter back, «Write back soon!» or «I’m looking forward to hearing from you» are both good choices.
    • If you’re writing a loved one, you might want to tell them «I love you,» «I’m thinking about you» or «I miss you.»
    • If you’re writing the letter to suit a particular occasion, like a birthday or holiday, reiterate your well wishing. For example, write «Again, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!»

    Write a formal sign-off. Business letter sign-offs should be formal, familiar, and appropriate for the situation. Unless you are in a field that values creativity and originality above traditional business decorum, it’s best to play it on the safe side when your letter is formal in nature. Always follow the sign-off with your signature. Consider the following options:[4]

    • Sincerely,
    • Best wishes,
    • Warm wishes,
    • Thank you,
    • Respectfully yours,

    Write a casual sign-off. For letters that are more casual in nature, the closing helps maintain goodwill and keep correspondence flowing smoothly. If you’re writing to an acquaintance, casual friend or a classmate, you might close with a friendly goodbye, like these:[5]

    • Cheers,
    • Take care,
    • Til next time,
    • Later,
    • Peace,
    • Warmly,
  3. Image titled End a Letter Step 6

    3

    Write a personal sign-off. If you’re writing to a close friend or family member, consider a more personal closing, like:

    • XO,
    • Yours,
    • Hugs,
    • Kisses,
    • Til soon,
    • Write soon,
    • Love,
  4. Image titled End a Letter Step 7

    4

    Write an intimate sign-off. If you’re writing to a lover, ending words can be even more intimate. A genuine, personable closing helps the letter sound like it came from you, not a store-bought greeting card. The right phrase might even improve your relationship. Follow the sign-off with your initials or signature. Consider these:

    • Love always,
    • Yours forever,
    • Affectionately yours,
    • Longing to see you,
    • Patiently yours,
    • Your darling,

    Decide not to add one. If you’ve said all that you need to say, there’s no need to add a postscript, or a «PS.» In fact, there are certain occasions when you actually shouldn’t — namely, when you’re writing any type of business letter.

  2. Image titled End a Letter Step 9

    2

    Add a postscript to include additional information. Postscripts are often added after a letter has been signed as a way to include information that was accidentally left out, or that is not important enough to warrant its own paragraph in the letter. For example:[6]

    • «PS. I bought you a souvenir! I’ll give it to you when I get back.»
    • «PS. My aunt says ‘hi.'»
  3. Image titled End a Letter Step 10

    3

    Add a postscript to enhance the letter’s meaning. Sometimes postscripts are included as a way to lighten a letter’s tone with a joke, or to playfully flirt with the recipient. Since postscripts are usually just a sentence or two, they can be used as a way of including information without the pressure of writing an explanation. Take these, for example:[7]

    • «PS. I already finished off the box of chocolates. Please send more supplies.»
    • «PS. Oh, I forgot to mention one thing: I’m madly in love with you.»

    4

    Reread your finished letter. It should flow seamlessly from body to conclusion, with no inconsistencies in tone or message. If it doesn’t, erase what you wrote or press «Delete» and keep working on it. People often read letters more than once, and some even save them forever. It’s worth taking a few extra minutes to make the letter perfect.

Add New Question

  • Question

    How should I end a complaint letter?

    Community Answer

    «I hope you take into consideration what I’m saying, and I thank you for your time. Have a nice day.»

  • Question

    When signing the letter, should I write my first name, last name, or full name?

    Community Answer

    If the letter is an informal letter (ie: to a family member or a friend), you can sign with just your first name. If the letter is a formal letter (ie: to your employer) you would want to sign with your first and last name. Some women also like to add their title in parentheses before their full name. ie: (Mrs.) Jane Doe.

  • Question

    How should I end a letter to the Department of Education to stop cyber bullying?

    Community Answer

    «Respectfully,» «Thank you in advance,» «Thank you in advance for…» («your time,» «consideration in this matter,» «your quick response to this matter»). I like the last one, especially when I am looking for action from to whomever I am writing. You can also just write «Thank You» and sign your name.

  • Be aware of sensitive topics. For example, if you’re writing to your grandmother who recently had heart surgery, say something affectionate but brief, such as, «I’ll come visit as soon as you’re back on your feet.» Do not mention anything about life being short or talk about triple bypass recovery statistics; you want to make her feel better, not worse.

  • When writing a thank you letter, make sure to state your gratitude one last time before you seal it.

  • The lighter the better. The end of your letter is not the time to start philosophizing about the meaning of life or the metaphorical significance of what you had for lunch today—save the heavy stuff for your next letter.

How you end a letter is important. It’s your last chance to make a good first impression on your reader. Choose the wrong closing, and you might damage the goodwill you have built up in the rest of your communication.

What’s the best way to end a letter or email message? Your closing needs to leave the reader with positive feelings about you and the letter you have written.

Note

In closing your letter, it is important to use an appropriately respectful and professional word or phrase.

Most formal letter closing options are reserved but note that there are degrees of warmth and familiarity among the options. Your relationship with the person to whom you’re writing will shape which closing you choose:

  • If you don’t know the individual to whom you’re writing, stick with a professional formal closing.
  • If you’re writing to a colleague, business connection, or someone else you know well, it’s fine to close your letter less formally.

Above all, your closing should be appropriate. Choose the right letter closing, and your reader likely won’t remember how you ended your letter. Ideally, your message will resonate instead of your word choice.

Key Takeaways

  • When you don’t know the individual to whom you’re writing, use a professional formal closing.
  • If you’re writing to someone you know well, it’s fine to close your letter less formally.
  • Some closings are not appropriate for business correspondence, so avoid being too informal.

The Best Options To End a Letter

The Balance

Letter Closing Examples

The following are letter closings that are appropriate for business and employment-related letters.

Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Regards, Yours truly, and Yours sincerely

These are the simplest and most useful letter closings to use in a formal business setting. These are appropriate in almost all instances and are excellent ways to close a cover letter or a job inquiry. “Sincerely” is a classic way to end a letter or email, and if you’re not sure about options, it’s a good one to choose.

Best regards, Cordially, and Yours respectfully

These letter closings fill the need for something slightly more personal. They are appropriate once you have some knowledge of the person to whom you are writing. You may have corresponded via email a few times, had a face-to-face or phone interview, or met at a networking event.

Warm regards, Best wishes, and With appreciation

These letter closings are also appropriate once you have some knowledge or connection to the person to whom you are writing. Because they can relate to the content of the letter, they can give closure to the point of the letter. Only use these if they make sense with the content of your letter.

More Letter Closing Examples

When you’re ending your letter, be sure to choose a letter closing that is appropriate to the topic of your letter and to your personal situation and relationship with the person to whom you are writing. Here are more examples to choose from:

  • Best,
  • Best of luck,
  • Best wishes,
  • Cordially yours,
  • Fond regards,
  • In appreciation,
  • In sympathy,
  • Kind regards,
  • Kind thanks,
  • Kind wishes,
  • Many thanks,
  • Regards,
  • Respectfully,
  • Respectfully yours,
  • Sincerely,
  • Sincerely yours,
  • Stay well,
  • Stay safe and well,
  • Thanks,
  • Thanks again,
  • Thank you,
  • Thank you for your assistance in this matter,
  • Thank you for your consideration,
  • Thank you for your recommendation,
  • Thank you for your time,
  • Warm regards,
  • Warm wishes,
  • Warmly,
  • With appreciation,
  • With deepest sympathy,
  • With gratitude,
  • With sincere thanks,
  • With sympathy,
  • Your help is greatly appreciated,
  • Yours cordially,
  • Yours faithfully,
  • Yours sincerely,
  • Yours truly,

Letter Closings To Avoid

There are certain closings that you want to avoid in any business letter or email. Most of these are simply too informal. Casual doesn’t work with professional correspondence. Some examples of closings to avoid are listed below:

  • Always,
  • Cheers,
  • Hugs,
  • Later,
  • Love,
  • Peace,
  • Rgds,
  • See ya,
  • Talk soon,
  • Take care,
  • Thx,
  • TTYL,
  • XOXO,

Some closings (such as “Love” and “XOXO”) imply a level of closeness that is not appropriate for a business letter. Slang or acronyms aren’t appropriate either.

Note

If you would use the closing in a note to a close friend, it’s probably not suitable for business correspondence.

How To Capitalize a Closing

Capitalize the first word of your closing. If your closing is more than one word, capitalize the first word and use lowercase for the other words. For example:

  • Sincerely
  • Sincerely yours
  • Regards
  • Best regards

How To Format a Letter Ending

Once you have chosen a word or phrase to use as a send-off, follow it with a comma, some space, and then include your signature.

Printed letter: If you are sending a hard-copy letter, leave four lines of space between the closing and your typed name. Use this space to sign your name in ink.

Email message: If you’re sending an email, leave one space between the complimentary close and your typed signature. Include your contact information directly below your typed signature.

What To Include in Your Signature

Beneath your letter closing, include your signature. If this is a physical letter, first sign your name in ink, and then list your typed signature below. If this is an email letter, simply add your typed signature below your send-off.

Note

Make sure to include your contact information in your letter.

If this is a physical letter, your contact information will be at the top of the letter. However, if this is an email, include that information beneath your typed signature. This will allow the recipient to respond to you easily.

Signature Examples

Hard-Copy Letter Signature

Sincerely,

Handwritten signature (for a printed letter)

Typed signature

Email Message Signature Example

Regards,

Typed Signature
Email Address
Phone
LinkedIn URL (if you have a profile)

Note

To set up your email signature, go to “settings” in your email account. Follow the steps to add your signature and prepopulate future messages.

How to end a letter if you are writing for a business or any other purposes? Some people consider a letter writing an art and they are in some way right. It is important to use the right tone and language. There is a whole bunch of words and phrases you need to use to have a correct letter ending. In this article our experts will reveal the most useful tips on how to end a business letter and demonstrate some useful examples to your service. Keep on reading to learn more.

How to End a Business Letter

The most important requirement of any letter ending is simple — your recipient should be satisfied and have a positive impression. The letter is not just the tool to inform your reader about something but to give a positive impression about you. You need to be respectful and informative at the same time.

So, how to end a business letter? There are few main rules that are controlling the level of familiarity used by a writer. The entire impression about you as a person may be built by one ending only. So, you need to make it obviously formal and respectful.

Another important thing about closings is its tone and appropriateness. A proper closing will make your letter sound good and state your awareness of business etiquette. The information you are using in your entire writing should resonate with the ending words.

The Most Popular Closings

There are few the most common and popular endings such as:

  • Regards (Best regards)
  • Sincerely
  • Yours truly
  • Cordially
  • Yours respectfully
  • Best wishes
  • With appreciation

With these words and phrases you will never lose a tone and offend anyone. Some people consider them to be the most effective and appropriate of all. Those are, probably, the most popular ones and fit perfectly for any type of letter not just business or formal.

These are also great for more personal writing. But usually it is much easier to choose an ending in case you know a person at least a little.

Business letters are not the only formal type. There are lots of other occasions when you can use a formal tone for a letter. It depends on the person you are writing to, your relationships, and the information you are providing with your writing piece. There are also few requirements on how to format your ending:

  • Punctuation — the word or a whole phrase you are using for closing should be followed by a comma. You also may add a space and your signature. Read about proper use of colon here.
  • Hard copy — you should get four lines left between a ending word and your name in case you are sending not digital but a hard copy of a letter. Your signature should be signed by hand.
  • Digital — in case you are sending an email, just get one space left between the ending and your typed name. Then add your contact information just under your name.

Using a Complimentary Close

If you are inserting a term before your signature in a formal letter, it is called a complimentary close or closing. It can be used both in digital mail or hard copy of a writing piece. It is used by writers to show their respect to the recipient. It is also a nice way to engage your reader to reply to your message. While this method is pretty old, some people even consider it too old fashioned, it is still broadly used all over the business world.

This detail will make your letter sound more professional and business wise but not casual. Do not use too long words unless there are some professional terms.

Formal Letter Closing Examples

In this part we will list the most appropriate closings for various types of letters:

  • Best regards,
  • Best wishes,
  • Best,
  • My best,
  • Regards,
  • Respectfully,
  • Respectfully yours,
  • Sincerely,
  • Sincerely yours,
  • Thank you,
  • Yours respectfully,
  • Yours sincerely,
  • Yours truly,
  • Cordially,
  • Cordially yours,
  • With appreciation,
  • With gratitude,
  • With sincere appreciation,
  • With sincere thanks.

Which Ending Is the Right One to Use?

Any of those examples we have listed in this article will work great for formal correspondence or for handmade greetings card with interesting souvenirs from London. You need to choose one that is the most appropriate to your message, the tone you are using there, request, and style. You also should not use those appreciative words too much.

There are also various closers with different variations such as “Best regards”. This phrase can be divided into two separate words “best” and “regards” and it will be absolutely enough to end your writing piece in a proper way. There is no use of thinking what ending is the best fitting into your message. All them are good enough to use.

If you are not some kind of a manager or secretary, you probably do not write those formal letters everyday. For most people it is quite unusual and complicated to write a one page message without any emotion and with keeping such formal tone. So, it is always better to have a raw draft, if you are writing a hard copy or at least reread the message before sending it to a recipient. Please remember that proofreading, editing, and writing are equally important. You can check the difference between proofreading and copyediting here.

Conclusion

In case you have any troubles with writing a letter of any type, there is a simple way out. Our writing experts can help you out anytime no matter how complicated your task is. Perfect formatting, on-time delivery, and of course perfect ending for the most reasonable price.

Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We would appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Thanks for your extremely helpful attention to this matter.
Thanks again for your attention, consideration, and time.
We look forward to building a strong business relationship in the future.
We take this opportunity of thanking you for your assistance.
We are looking forward to your confirmation.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
It’s always a pleasure doing business with you.
Assuring you of our best attention at all times.

  • Yours faithfully *– с искренним почтением;
  • Respectfully yours*с уважением;
  • Sincerely yours –искренне ваш;
  • With appreciation – искренне признателен;
  • With gratitude – искренне благодарен;
  • Thanks and regards – с благодарностью и пожеланиями добра;
  • Best regardsс наилучшими пожеланиями;
  • Kind regards – с добрыми пожеланиями;
  • Best wishes –

Well, got to go now.
Anyway, I must go and get with my work.
I must finish my letter because I must go to bed.
Do keep in touch!
I’m sorry I must go to …
I have much to work to do.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Well, I must finish now.
Write back soon!
Write soon and let me know all the news.
Can’t wait to hear from you!
Don’t forget to write!
Please, tell me more about…
Let me know what happens.
Drop me a line when you are free
Bye for now!
Have a nice day!

  • Yours cordially – сердечно Ваш;
  • Yours ever всегда Ваш;
  • Eternally yours – неизменно Ваш;
  • Your loving brother – Ваш любящий брат;
  • Your friend Ваш друг;
  • Your very sincere friend – Ваш преданный друг;
  • Best wishes С наилучшими пожеланиями;
  • Give my regards to – Передавайте приветствия…;
  • All the best

  • Affectionately – С нежностью;
  • Lots of love – Очень люблю;
  • Lots of kisses Целую;
  • Hugs – Обнимаю;
  • With love and kisses – Люблю и целую;
  • With all my love – Со всей любовью;
  • Passionately yours Страстно твой;
  • Always and forever – Твой навеки веков;
  • Missing you Скучаю по тебе;
  • Send my love to – Передавай мои приветы …;
  • Take care Береги себя;
  • Till next time – До следующего раза;
  • See you soon Скоро увидимся;
  • See ya – Увидимся;
  • Cheers Пока;
  • Ciao –

Hi, Emily!

I’m still waiting for the book which you promised to send me at our last meeting. You don’t write to me since then but obviously you have a lot on your plate right now.

Anyway, I`m going to visit you in a week and we have a chance to meet. What do you think about it? Drop me a line when you are free.

Cheers,

Anna

Dear Jack,

Many thanks for your letter! Lovely to hear from you!

I must apologize for not writing earlier. I worked very much and didn’t have any free time. But now I can tell you about my news.

Since yesterday I’m on vacation. My boss let me go on vacation for a month. I am very glad, now I can go to Spain, finally! I saved money for this travel for two years, and yesterday I have bought a round trip ticket to Barcelona. I’ll spend two weeks in Barcelona. You cannot imagine how much I dreamed about it! I am just in seventh heaven!

Later, when I’ll return Moscow, I’ll go to my parents. They live in Sankt-Petersburg. I spent my childhood in the city of Sankt-Petersburg, so I have many friends there. I will be very pleased to meet with them. After this trip to the city of my childhood, I’ll return Moscow again and write you all my experiences.

Well, I must finish now. Hope to hear from you soon!

With love and kisses,

Eva

How To End A Letter

There are times when you spend half of your time pondering over how to start a letter. And while the body of the letter might just come easily to you, the end is sure to give you a tough time. You will find it difficult to get the right word to pen your thoughts and feelings. This is because the end of the letter matters just as much, if not more, as the beginning and body of the letter. And why, because that is what concludes all that you’ve written so far! There are plenty of ways to end a letter and they take care of almost all writers’ blocks that you may face. Most people end the letter by using ‘sincerely’ or ‘truly yours’. This is because most people do not know a more creative way to end it. While ending the letter, it is important to avoid an abrupt end which could leave the reader wondering what you hope to achieve with your note. You must also consider the message which you want to convey while ending it. Clearly knowing the ways to end a letter can save you from confusions and embarrassments while you send the letter. You can also clearly make your recipient understand your message.

Ending A Letter

How To End A Business Letter

    • A business letter must end formally and with respect to the receiver.
    • The concluding line and paragraph are very critical as they reflect the type of organisation you are addressing in the letter.
    • The ending should be professional, courteous and very specific in approach with, a touch of warm regards towards the end.
    • A business letter must be concluded in a declaring way that you are looking forward to hear from the other party.
    • It should sound expert and precise. Though it must not be stuffed with emotion, it must not either be very cold.
    • It must have a note of enthusiasm too.
    • Say a ‘thank you’ to the company for their services and for the business dealings, if they have collaborated with your in business transactions.
    • You can use the following expressions to end a business letter: Best Regards, Respectfully Yours, Warm Regards, Thanks & Regards etc.

Ending A Cover Letter

    • While ending a cover letter, say that you looking forward to get an interview invitation from the recipients.
    • After the concluding line, you should write the farewell expressions which sound apt to end a business letter. Following are the expressions to end a cover letter or other business letters:
      • Thanking You, Yours Sincerely
      • Thanking You, Yours Faithfully
      • Thanking You, Respectfully Yours
      • Regards
      • With Anticipation

Ending A Personal Letter

    • While ending personal letters to family members, relatives or friends, you can use informal endings like:
      • See you shortly,
      • See you on _____,
      • Talk for you later,
      • Later on,
      • Yours,
      • Yours Really,
      • Enjoy,

Ending A ‘Thank You’ Letter

    • You can say ‘thank you’ to the recipient in the ending too and ask them to be totally free to ask you any kind of help in case they need. The farewell expression can be:
      • Thanking you Again, Yours Sincerely
      • Thanking you Once again, Yours Faithfully
      • Thanking You Again, Yours Gratefully
      • Thank you for your consideration
      • Thank you for your time
      • Warmest and most sincere regards
      • Very truly
      • My sincerest gratitude
      • With much appreciation
      • Thanks

Indications Of Ending A Letter

    • Give a hint that you are closing the letter at the end of body paragraphs. It can be anything like ‘write back soon’,’ I hope we can see each other again’ and ‘I love you’ depending upon the nature of the letter. You can also signal the ending of letter by writing a separate section for final remarks.
    • Provide a double space and give your complimentary closing remark. You can use ‘your lovely’ or ‘love always’ depending upon your relationship with the recipient. Follow the phrase with a comma.
    • After skipping a line and signing your name, add a post script if you want to add a bit more information which you did not include in the original letter.
    • You can repeat the idea of the letter in the final paragraph. If you are applying for a job then reaffirming your interest in a specific job position would be a good idea. Similarly, if it is a personal letter then a final remark reemphasizing the theme, such as an apology or a congratulation, would be well received.
    • You should keep the language light and simple once you bring it to a close.
    • In informal letters to a boss or a colleague, the language need not be as stiff as in a business letter but, at the same time, do not keep it overtly friendly. You can end it saying “I appreciate you taking time to read this” or “Please respond when you get a free minute”.

Some Useful Considerations

    • End your letter with a ‘thank you’ if you intend to express your gratitude to the recipient of the letter.
    • While ending an informal letter, it is better to capitalize both words in the ending such as ‘Best Wishes’ or ‘Warm Regards’.
    • While writing a letter to a close relative, an informal ending is better than a formal ending. The latter makes you sound emotionally distant.
    • If you are writing a letter to a person with whom you are not very close, and you don’t want to be too formal or distant, you can use expressions like “all my best”, “regards”, “cordially yours”, “warm regards”, “talk to you later” and so on.

You can end your letter in various ways. You can even wear an imaginative hat and end a love letter or informal letter by employing farewells such as ‘Adieu’, ‘Aloha’, ‘Alvida’, ‘Ciao’, etc. Always remember, all well that ends well. If the starting and body are perfect but the ending is a bit lousy, it spoils the letter. You cannot appreciate a business letter ending with ‘Lots of love’. A lover does not look forward to the partner signing off saying ‘respectfully yours’. Ways to end a letter are as significant as the gestures used while starting a letter.
