Does represent mean symbolize?

1 : to serve as a symbol of. 2 : to represent, express, or identify by a symbol. intransitive verb. : to use symbols or symbolism.

A great metaphor recasts the familiar or mundane as something strikingly different yet truly parallel. It gives a startlingly vivid picture or brings a surprising insight. A bad metaphor fails to achieve the parallel, or the fresh insight, or both. The element of surprise is an important part of a great metaphor.

Metaphor is important to poetry because it helps to explain emotions in other, simpler, terms. As Aristotle stated in his “Poetics,” the difference between histories and poems is that poems explain emotions while histories explain events. Metaphors also explain qualities using the same methods.

Three main functions of metaphor are: the emotive, the persuasive, and the cognitive function. Many philosophers have been of the opinion that, even when metaphors seem to express cognitive content, they are basically employed to evoke a vivid, expressive picture of the relevant state of affairs.

Then we can look at some practical examples and see how to discuss a metaphor.

  1. Step 1: Read the sentence or phrase to see if it compares two objects.
  2. Step 2: See if the comparison relies on words such as “like” or “as”
  3. Step 3: See what the metaphor is comparing.

How to create fantastic metaphors.

  1. Choose a character, object, or setting. Say, for example, you’re going to write a metaphor about a soccer goalie.
  2. Focus on a particular scene you’re describing.
  3. Now think of some other objects that share characteristics you identified in Step 1.
  4. Take your metaphor and expand on it.

What is the meaning of personification?

1 : attribution of personal qualities especially : representation of a thing or abstraction as a person or by the human form. 2 : a divinity or imaginary being representing a thing or abstraction. 3 : embodiment, incarnation.

A simile is saying something is like something else. A metaphor is often poetically saying something is something else. An analogy is saying something is like something else to make some sort of an explanatory point. You can use metaphors and similes when creating an analogy.

Both similes and metaphors are literary devices used by writers to compare two unalike things, ideas, actions, etc. in a non-literal manner. People use similes and metaphors to make their writing more descriptive, more persuasive, more poetic, and more emphatic.
