Different word for age group

fetus (unborn) -> infant (< 1 year) -> toddler (between 1 to 2 years) -> kid (before puberty)-> teenager (after puberty but < 19 years) -> young adult (between 19 to 25 years) -> simply called adult?? -> middle aged person( 40-60) -> senior citizens?? -> body (dead Emotion: stick out tongue)

Could someone help me in verifying my understanding of names of different age groups? Where in the timeline should I fit ‘adolescent’, ‘baby’, ‘child’, ‘grown-up’?

There aren’t really any set transition points apart from teenager, which strictly applies to all of the ages ending in ‘teen’ so from thirteen to nineteen. Puberty has nothing to do with it.

I’d say a child becomes a toddler when it starts to walk, before that it is a baby. Then child from about 3 or 4 years old (kid is slang) but that goes on to overlap with young teenagers. I’d say a 14 year old is both a child and a teenager. Young adult — this gets used to describe maybe 16-22 ish year olds. Adults — in theory everybody over 18, but generally the older teenagers aren’t quite seen as full adults. Middle age — that’s debateable! No-one likes being called middle aged so it is often ‘your age+ another ten years’ Emotion: smile. But personally, I’d say roughly age 45-60. Words for ‘older people’ are quite difficult as some of them are seen as offensive in some way (you see how I used ‘older people’ — that is the UK’s PC phrase now for people over 60). Senior citizens is another option (sounds a bit more American to me). ‘Elderly’ is a word you will hear a lot but older people hate it as it includes ideas of frailness and helplessness.

Adolescent — going through puberty (roughly) so tends to coincide a lot with teenager. Probably 12-16 or so. As soon as they start changing from ‘kids’ they are adolescents. Grown up — this is just a child’s word for adult.

I have three age groups that I want to distinguish in my research project.

They are as follows:

  • 18-45 years — I have called this group young adults
  • 46-65 years — I have called this group adults
  • 66 years and over — I have called this group seniors

Is there a better way (one word) to describe the 18-45 age group? I don’t like the term young adults. (Adults and seniors work fine for me!)

How about just adults? I would recommend a breakdown like this:

  • 18-45 years — adults
  • 46-65 years — middle-aged
  • 66 years and over — seniors

What about prime adult or early adult? From the Wikipedia entry for ‘young adult’:

A young/prime adult, according to Erik Erikson’s stages of human development, is generally a person between the age of 20 — 40, whereas an adolescent is a person between the age of 13 — 19,1[2] although definitions and opinions vary. The young adult stage in human development precedes middle adulthood. A person in the middle adulthood stage is between the ages of 40 — 65. In maturity, a person is 65 years old or older.

The way Reverse Dictionary works is pretty simple. It simply looks through tonnes of dictionary definitions and grabs the ones that most closely match your search query. For example, if you type something like «longing for a time in the past», then the engine will return «nostalgia». The engine has indexed several million definitions so far, and at this stage it’s starting to give consistently good results (though it may return weird results sometimes). It acts a lot like a thesaurus except that it allows you to search with a definition, rather than a single word. So in a sense, this tool is a «search engine for words», or a sentence to word converter.

I made this tool after working on Related Words which is a very similar tool, except it uses a bunch of algorithms and multiple databases to find similar words to a search query. That project is closer to a thesaurus in the sense that it returns synonyms for a word (or short phrase) query, but it also returns many broadly related words that aren’t included in thesauri. So this project, Reverse Dictionary, is meant to go hand-in-hand with Related Words to act as a word-finding and brainstorming toolset. For those interested, I also developed Describing Words which helps you find adjectives and interesting descriptors for things (e.g. waves, sunsets, trees, etc.).

In case you didn’t notice, you can click on words in the search results and you’ll be presented with the definition of that word (if available). The definitions are sourced from the famous and open-source WordNet database, so a huge thanks to the many contributors for creating such an awesome free resource.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: Elastic Search, @HubSpot, WordNet, and @mongodb.

GRAMMATICAL CATEGORY OF AGE GROUP

Age group is a noun.

A noun is a type of word the meaning of which determines reality. Nouns provide the names for all things: people, objects, sensations, feelings, etc.

WHAT DOES AGE GROUP MEAN IN ENGLISH?

Demographic profile

A demographic or demographic profile is a term used in marketing and broadcasting, to describe a demographic grouping or a market segment. This typically involves age bands, social class bands and gender. A demographic profile can be used to determine when and where advertising should be placed so as to achieve maximum results. In all such cases, it is important that the advertiser get the most results for their money, and so careful research is done to match the demographic profile of the target market to the demographic profile of the advertising medium. For instance, shortly after the cancellation of Star Trek in 1969, NBC’s marketing department complained that was premature. They explained that their newly instituted demographic audience profiling techniques indicated that the series’ main young urban audience was highly desirable for advertisers. In 1971, CBS acted on their own marketing department’s demographic findings about their television network’s programming and canceled several series that appealed primarily to older and rural audiences in a move nicknamed the rural purge.
