I am basically writing some essays, and I have come across something that has stumped me: whether to use «diverse» or «various» in my sentence.
For example, my sentence states something along the lines of this:
«I hope to achieve a level of success in the ______ program experiences.»
The reason why I am confused is I do not know if the words diverse and various are 100% exactly the same meaning or not. In my mind, I thought the word various meant «different» in a positive way, while the word diverse meant «completely different» in a negative way. Or it just seemed like using the word diverse is «stronger» than the word various. In my mind, the adjective choice would be used differently in different contexts.
Basically, I am writing to say that a certain academic program (given that it has a lot of varied opportunities …in a GOOD way), so I was not sure if I should use diverse instead of various. I just do not know if diverse has a totally different feel or meaning to it.
So I just did not want to imply something negative/positive or make my tone too active/passive (if these words do convey these types of things).
So, what would be the more appropriate adjective? Does it matter?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, Sfood
I for one have never perceived any kind of negativity or positivity in either word.
For me diverse emphasizes the differentness of multiple things, while various emphasizes the multipleness of different things, with about 62% overlap in either direction (or 31.7% overlap in both directions given a northeasterly wind … oh well you get the picture, I hope)
It seems to me that the word you want is various. Probably

Ah, yes. I do see your point, and I would have to agree.
The problem lies with what I am trying to express and making sure that the reader does not get the wrong intentions, ideas, or assumptions.
Basically, my sentence reads something like this: «I wish to explore my interests in the _____ program opportunities.» I am trying to say that the opportunities & experiences available to me are going to be various and diverse in a sense (except I did not want to use those two words redundantly together).
Diverse in a sense that the opportunities/experiences will hone my interest/path to pursue later on.
I wanted to say diverse because I want the reader know that I believe the future opportunities will be different in a positive way, to spark my interest.
I also wanted to say various because I did not want the reader to get the impression that I truly believe the opportunities/experiences are diverse in thinking that they are completely different (!). But I realized that diverse, used in an academic sense, is more powerful, but I think it may give off the wrong ideas. These experiences will hone my interest, but I wanted to add the adjective in there to tell them that the experiences will be: plentiful, various, and diverse in a positive way.
So, hmm…. I’m still having trouble deciding between the two. I may just be over-analyzing this, though. What do you think?

I second ewie’s opinion, and fully endorse their (forgive the dodgy anaphoric epicenity, won’t you?) wonderful characterisation of the contrasting natures of differentness and multiplicity expressed by ‘diverse’ and ‘various’, respectively.
I would suggest that you use ‘diverse’. I don’t see any negative connotation therein, and I think it is a stronger, more expressive word. ‘Diverse’ to me would be in keeping with your desire to portray a program as having varied opportunities ‘in a good way’. A key point for me is that you specifically used the word ‘varied’, which is closer in meaning to ‘diverse’ than it is to the most common interpretation of ‘various’.
In actual fact, ‘various’ is supposed to carry something of the same meaning that ‘diverse’ does. But, again, I agree with ewie, that it is often taken as a mundane synonym for ‘many’, rather than to mean ‘many and varied’ (‘of diverse kinds; unlike, different’).
Whichever word you choose, I don’t think you can go wrong, so I don’t think you should stress overly about your word choice, here.

When I read the word «diverse» I find I make certain associations:
1/ Shakespearean stage directions — «divers alarums» — which sounds archaic (and thus I would favour «various»)
2/ «diversify» — which suggests an image of branching roads (branching out from a common starting place)
and
3/ «diversion» — which suggests I know where I want to go but cannot take a direct route to get there.
None of these are strictly negative, but I wonder if such associations are why you feel «diverse» to be negative?

Aardvark, the reason why I think «diverse» has a negative connotation:
I feel like like when talking about certain program opportunities that I do not want to give the reader the impression I truly believe those opportunities are different. It makes me feel like I am pompous (I think anyway) in saying that these opportunities are definitely diverse because I know they will be.
On another note, I do mean «many and varied» as Catastrophe mentioned. But I am not sure if saying the «many and varied» opportunities sound better. My next sentence will explain that these different experiences will help me achieve my goal. So it was just the sentence before this one that I had trouble on deciding on word choice in showing how different or what I believe to be different in the opportunities that may be.
This essay is writing really the future possibilities as I see it—coming from a potential future applicant (if they choose to accept/read me). The word «various» just meant very broad (which can be a good or bad thing), but I certainly felt it was not as strong as diverse. However, on the other hand, «diverse» makes me feel like I am very egotistical in saying that these different opportunities are so diverse (when I have not experienced them yet… I just know from my own point of view and what I’ve researched). I hope this makes sense.
But, yeah, I do think I will just choose either: various, diverse, or «many and varied.» Thanks everyone for the help, though. I truly appreciate it!
