Microsoft and Word will use default American dictionary. For UK dictionary then you have to add a Uk dictionary. Have you added any UK dictionaries? |

I was going to suggest you check the settings Wiganken is showing in the previous reply. I’m on a newer version of Word, but to get there in any of the ribbon-based Word versions, I think it’s the same. File/Options, then find Proofing from the left hand menu, and look for the «Custom Dictionaries…» button. If you don’t have a Custom.dic file established, maybe it wouldn’t let you write to it. — Ann |

It doesn’t matter what the dictionary is called. You can only add words to the default dictionary and then only if the language of that default dictionary matches the language applied to the word that you wish to add, or is designated as a dictionary for all languages.

Firstly I do not have Secondly when I insalled office 2016, I set the languge to English (UK). So it is not the built in American custom dictionary. I have tested it out with words spelt diferently in Amercan. Do I have add an additional dictionary as well as the American and UK dictionary. Also when you add to dictionary, you definatly do not add to custom.dic. Word creates a seperate file for words added. |

Again, look at Mastering the Spelling Checker by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP. That is the best source of information about how the spelling checker works. You cannot change the actual spell checking files that come with Word.You can add words to your custom dictionary. You can note words that Word thinks are spelled correctly as incorrect by adding them to an Exclude file. The proofing language that is used for your text is stored in character-level formatting. When you type some special or custom words such as a person name, a company name, a product name or something other in Microsoft Word document, generally the special words will be underlined in red and considered spelling mistakes. That’s because the special or custom words are not included in the default dictionary built-in Microsoft Word. To prevent Microsoft Word always considering your special words spelling mistakes, you can add the words into its custom dictionary. Now, this post will show you how to add words to the custom dictionary in Word 2016. There are two options as below.
- Option 1: through the context menu
- Option 2: through Word Options settings
Option 1: Add words to the custom dictionary in Word through the context menu
In your Word 2016 document, right-click on the target word and then from the context menu select Add to Dictionary.
Option 2: Add words to custom dictionary through Word Options settings
Step 1: Open your Word 2016 document.
Step 2: Click the File tab, and then click the Options tab.
Step 3: In the Word Options dialog, select Proofing on the left-side pane. Then on the right-side pane, locate the “When correcting spelling in Microsoft Office programs” section, and click the Custom Dictionaries button.
Step 4: After the “Custom Dictionaries” dialog opens, select the default custom dictionary and then click the “Edit Word List” button.
Step 5: In the “CUSTOM.DIC” dialog, type the word(s) you want to add to the custom dictionary, click the Add button, and click OK.
Step 6: When you return to the “Custom Dictionaries” dialog, click OK. Click OK again in the Word Options dialog. Then the words are added into the custom dictionary in Word 2016.
Tips: In future, if you want to remove the words from the dictionary, just select the words and click Delete, or click Delete all.

I don’t know about you but I regularly add word to my “spelling checker” mainly to get rid of the red-wave-underlining that clutters the main mistakes. So, I add names of people and other words, but sometimes I add a wrong word and now need to remove it from the dictionary.
This is how to get to and modify your Custom Dictionary:
1. Open the proofing options:
· In most Office programs: Click File > Options > Proofing.
· In Outlook: Click File > Options > Mail > Spelling and Autocorrect > Proofing.
· In InfoPath: Click Home > Spelling > Check Spelling Options.
2. Make sure the Suggest from main dictionary only check box is cleared.
3. Click Custom Dictionaries.
All dictionaries (if you have more than one) are listed here, with the default dictionary at the top.
