Next to the two bedrooms, we have a small living room, a large kitchen with a seating area and a bird cage, a long narrow hallway and a bathroom. The bathroom has a sink, bathtub and toilet. We have a bunk bed and a computer.
Since we don’t have enough space in our room for all our belongings, we made some of our toys and books in the basement. It’s pretty big and sometimes we take the elevator down to play there. We also celebrate our birthdays.
This is a real party cellar.
My parents even installed a small kitchen, although we didn’t have a water tap. Our neighbors are sometimes a little noisy when they are celebrating in their apartment, and then we cannot sleep. There is a great playground behind the house with flower gardens around it. Since the apartment is so far away, the view from the windows is really wonderful. It has a large living room, large kitchen, dining area and bathroom. We have a bunk bed and one computer.

The description of the house in English can include a description of the structure of the house, the number of floors, the location and number of rooms. Let’s see what can be said about the structure itself and what the different parts of the house are called. When describing the appearance, we can also mention its color and other external features.
House structure and appearance
To get started, read the following vocabulary, with its help we will compose a brief description of the house.
An unidentified Australian soldier, likely from the 10th Light Horse, clockwise with a bayonet attached to his rifle, listening to music played on a highly prized gramophone possession. The language of Australia is rich in slang every day that reflects the experience of the country’s history. From borrowing words from the Aboriginal language, through convict sources, gold is thrown and entered into World War I, words have emerged to describe essential aspects of Australian character and personality.
The kangaroo was adopted even before colonization. The convicts gave us «collect», «bolter», «roll-up» and «servants of the crown». The Bush Rangers gave us a bush telegraph. A key part of the Australian psyche, the “excavator,” emerged from World War I, a term adapted for its use in golden endeavors.
- Wall — wall.
- Thick — thick (about substance, material).
- Sturdy is steady.
- Window — window.
- Door — a door.
- Fence is a fence.
- Gate — gate.
- Garage — garage.
- Storey — floor.
- Balcony — balcony.
- Roof — the roof.
- Attic is an attic.
- Basement — basement.
- Chimney is a chimney.
- Skylight is a skylight.
- Backyard — backyard.
- Garden — a garden.
- To store — store.
After we have the most necessary vocabulary in our arsenal, we can write a short text describing the house.
Australian slang used humor, wit, rhymes, flash language, the weird bush and beach experience, familiar and personal, to understand terms that could describe events that were often new or transformative. For example, “having a bash” is somewhat similar to “giving him a pile,” and both phrases reflect the history of Australian improvisation and hard work as part of the bush work.
Australian idiom or vernacular
Sydney Baker, the author of a number of works on slang, believed that Australia’s «greatest talent» was for an idiomatic invention. It is a manifestation of our vitality and restless imagination. Image courtesy of the National Library of Australia.
Amanda Laugesen, in her study of World War I slang, reminds us of how slang reinforced a sense of national identity among Australian troops far from home, fighting in countries where people spoke foreign languages.
During World War II, «Don» came with raw shrimp and it is still used to warn someone when they are trying to impose their will.

My family and I live in a block of flats in the center of the town. We are lucky to live on the third floor so we don’t have any problems if the lift breaks down. Our flat is very comfortable: we have two bedrooms, a sitting room and a kitchen. We spend most of our time as a family sitting and talking in the kitchen where we prepare our food.
We usually use our sitting-room to entertain guests and it is my favorite room in the flat because it is always nice and cheerful. There are lots of paintings on the walls of the sitting-room and the bookshelves are full of literary classics which have been in my family for a long time. We have a sofa, two comfortable armchairs and a large table in the sitting-room. The room is covered in warm pink wall-paper which makes it a very inviting room to sit in.

Apartment in English — description of the apartment in English with translation
To start describing an apartment in English, let’s try to understand what a home means for a true lady or gentleman. There is no place home, say the British, which loosely means: “There is no place like home».
For a Briton, a house, since the days of chivalry in the name of a beautiful lady, has always been a fortress, a dwelling, and a sanctuary.
They still say that their house is the most reliable fortification, since the right to property in English-speaking countries is unshakable.
The description of the apartment in English with translation in different English-speaking countries will be slightly different, but the main aspects have remained traditional since ancient times. Briton will name apartment a flat, which would mean a room usually located on the same floor of an apartment building.
Any apartment has walls — walls, ceiling — ceiling, floor — floor, window — windows , doors — doors.
It is customary to lay carpets on the floors — carpets, and hang curtains on the windows — curtains or blinds — louvre shutter.
So which floor is the first?
A very important point: residents of Great Britain number their homes, starting from the second floor, which is familiar to our understanding (it is the first for them). The lowest floor is called a ground floor, which introduces some confusion. When translated into Russian, we have to call the British first floor «our» second, the second third, and so on.
For a Briton, about the following question is common: “I wonder if you live in a house or in a flat” — “I wonder if you live in an apartment or in a house”. But their own houses are usually located on two or even three levels, not counting the basement — basement.
Flat or Apartment?
An apartment in English is flat, although the Americans call it apartment… By analogy with the British version (flat), this room is usually located on the same floor. The word «apartment» is used in the plural of large, lavishly furnished rooms in luxurious British mansions: apartments.
We in Russia sometimes call apartments on two or three levels, but this does not apply to either the UK or the United States. Penthouses are being built in the USA — penthouses — these are single-family houses on the roofs of skyscrapers or smaller apartment buildings.
Such buildings are available only to very rich people, so if you are lucky enough to visit there, it will be quite good.
What’s behind the hallway?
You know how an apartment sounds in English, and now is the time to move on to the names of the premises. Entering a British apartment, you will find yourself in a hallway — hallwhere the mirror will hang (or stand) — mirror and there is a wardrobe — walk-in closet… Unlike the British, Americans are not fixated on hallways, and their individual houses are not built with such solid materials.
Depending on the layout, you will alternately find yourself in other rooms. On the kitchen — kitchen — you’ll find kitchen cabinets (built-in kitchen cabinets), a kitchen stove — kitchen stove, a microwave oven — microwave.
Going into the living room, you will find a wall-unit — furniture wall, large table for dinner parties — backgammon, chairs — chairs, comfortable armchairs — arm chairs, couch — sofa.
Depending on the wealth of the tenants, in an English apartment (more often in a house) there are several bedrooms — bedroomswhere can stand single beds — single bed, or double bed — double furniture for relaxation. The British style bathroom is bathroom, Americans have this toilet.
An apartment in English is both spelled and almost pronounced in both British and American versions, with the exception of the peculiarities of reading the letter a и r.
A vacuum cleaner will help you clean up the apartment — vacuum-cleaner, the air conditioner will help to bring the air condition to the required level — air conditioning, heater — heater, will provide warmth in the room.
Address in English: house apartment street
If you are going to provide your address in English, you will have to go from “small to large”, and not vice versa, as in Russia. English-speaking people will first report the apartment and house number, then the street, city and country of departure. They also have an identification number like our zip code.
It is very useful to consider a drawing of an apartment with furniture for an English lesson. In a cross-section of a typical British apartment, you will see all the major pieces of furniture with their signatures. Find out the approximate location of the premises. We are sure that having visited the British at a party, you will not find yourself in an awkward position.
Visit us at Lim English and you will find everything about English and American apartments. You will not have to indulge in unnecessary inquiries when you arrive abroad and settle down to live with the host on an exchange program or in a rented apartment.

We all live somewhere: in an apartment, in a house, in a country house, etc. The British say: “My house is my castle”. Our home is exactly where we spend a significant part of our life.
We strive to equip our home, to make it as comfortable as possible. We show others our shelter and strive to appreciate how others live. Therefore, our speech is replete with words with the help of which we talk about our home.
In this article, you will learn how to describe your home in English.
Location. Location
When describing your home, it is first important to indicate in which part of the city you live, because the area where a person lives affects his lifestyle. For example:
- On the outskirts of town.
- In the suburbs.
- In a residential area.
- Not far from the station (quite close to the station).

Building type. Type of building
Further, when describing housing, you must indicate the type of building. This can be an apartment building / block of flats, consisting of a large number of flats / apartments, or a separate house for one or several families. There are several names for the house in English:
- Detached house — detached house for one family.
- Semi-detached house — half of the house with a separate entrance to each part of the house.
- Duplex is a two-storey house for two families with two different entrances.
- Cottage — a house outside the city, usually with a garden.
- Mansion is a mansion.
- Vacation house — cottage. Or dacha — this word already exists in English.
It should also not be forgotten that skyscrapers are being built all over the world today, which are very tall multi-storied buildings. We call the floors in the house floors, not to be confused with another meaning of this word — «floor». Now let’s take a closer look at how to describe a separate house and apartment.

Description of the apartment in English. Flat
To begin with, it should be said that the word flat is used in British English, and the word apartment in American, but both of them mean «apartment».
Beginning a story about your apartment, tell me which floor it is on. But there is a small nuance here: in the UK and America, the floor count is different. The catch is that the first floor in England is called the ground floor, followed by the first floor, second floor, etc.
In America — first floor or ground floor, then second floor, etc. That is, if you need to get, for example, to the third floor in England, then the question “What floor do you need?” you say “Second, please”. And in America, you answer: «Third, please.»
Also, when describing an apartment, you may need the following words:
WordTranslation
Flat (Br) / Apartment (Am) | Apartment |
Ground floor (Br) / First floor (Am) | First floor |
top floor | Top floor |
Lift | Elevator |

- After that, you can go directly to the description of one of the rooms (hallway, bedroom, kitchen)
- To begin with, describe it as a whole — relative size (large, small), architectural features (shape and number of windows, ceilings), overall impression (bright, sunny)
- Describe the finish — colors of walls, ceilings, floors, tell about lighting — sconces, chandeliers, floor lamps
- Move on to sketching the furniture — its location, shape, appearance, color and functionality (There is a fold-out sofa upholstered in velvet by the right wall. We use it when guests stay overnight)
- Tell us about household appliances that are also part of the interior — a computer, video player, TV, washing machine
- Don’t forget to mention textile decoration — decorative pillows, curtains, bedspreads, drapery.
- Indicate other decorative elements — paintings, figurines, origami, photographs, etc.
It is imperative to complete the text with a final sentence like «I really enjoy spending time in the living room!» or «My room is the most comfortable and beautiful!»
How do you describe a room in English?
Before writing an essay, I recommend that you repeat the topic about English prepositions again. Pay particular attention to place prepositions, as you will have to use them often. Also, you will often come across the construction «there is / there are”, So it will not be superfluous to repeat pronouns. Also, remember the rules for constructing English sentences. All this will be very useful to you.
Well, now, with a clear conscience and a positive mood, proceed to describe the premises in English, following the above plan and rules.
First of all, we indicate where we live: in a big city — city,in a small town — town, in a village — village, you can mention the location. Then we describe the type of housing. Here in English, different names are used for each type:
- Skyscraper — skyscraper
- Block of flats / apartment building
- Single family house — detached house
- Semi-detached house with separate entrances
- Two-storey house for two families — duplex
- Mansion — mansion
- Country house — cottage
- Dacha — vacation house
- Floor — floors
Example: I live in a small flat in London. It’s close to the university. My flat is very quiet. My flat is on the 5 floor. There are 2 rooms in my flat. (I live in a small apartment in London. It is located next to the university. It’s very quiet here. My apartment is on the 5th floor. My apartment has 2 rooms). How do you describe a house in English? Now you can start describing each room individually or just one of them:
- Hallway, corridor — hall
- Living room — living room
- Dining room — dining room
- Kitchen — kitchen
- Study room — study
- Bedroom — bedroom
- Bathroom — bathroom
- Balcony — balcony
We give a general description: There is a big window in the living room, so it’s very light. (There is a large window in the living room, so it is very bright). And we talk about the colors: Red flowers (red flowers), beige wall-papers (beige wallpaper), white ceiling (white ceiling).
Moving on to sketching the pieces of furniture:
- Sofa — sofa
- Coffee table — coffee table
- Bed — bed
- Armchair — armchair
- Bookcase — bookcase
- Bedside table — night table
- Dressing table — dresser
- Wardrobe — wardrobe
- Dinner table — dinner table
- Kitchen set — cupboards
- Chairs — chairs
- Sink — sink
- Toilet bowl — toilet
Example: There is a wardrobe, a desk in my room. There aren’t any chairs, but there is a big red sofa. (My room has a wardrobe, a desk. There are no chairs, but there is a large red sofa).
Household appliances are an important part of the interior, and sometimes even fundamental when it comes to the kitchen. Therefore, it is imperative to tell about it in the text:
- Technique — appliances
- TV — TV-set
- Computer — computer
- Refrigerator — fridge
- Microwave oven
- Stove — stove / cooker
- Dishwasher — dishwasher
- Washing machine — washing machine
- Vacuum cleaner — vacuum cleaner
Towards the end, start talking about the decor elements:
- Picture — picture
- Curtain — curtain
- Clock — clock
- Carpet — carpet
- Mirror — mirror
- Vase — vase
- Photos — photos
- Shelf — shelf
Sample text: There are some shelves and clock on the wall. There’s a vase on the shelf. There are some pictures and photos on the wall. (There are several shelves and a clock on the wall. There is a vase on the shelf. There are paintings and photographs on the wall).
If you add up all the examples that I have given, then you will already have a small text of an essay describing the interior. And having memorized all the words that I have given, your vocabulary will increase significantly. Try to write essays — descriptions or narratives and other topics. This will help you quickly learn many new English words and phrases.

“My apartment” in English: how to describe the place where you live?
By Natalia January 21, 2019
To describe an apartment in English, you need to know a sufficient amount of vocabulary on this topic and be able to build at least simple grammatical constructions. Otherwise, this topic does not cause any difficulties.
Plan for a story about an apartment — what should it be?
Describing your apartment in English is one of the most common topics for a story. Why?
Because it covers the following topics:
- names of interior items;
- Present Simple tense (present simple), since it is almost always used to describe;
- prepositions of place;
- adjectives;
- sayings.
So, having learned to talk about your apartment, you can study and practice 5 relevant topics at once.
To describe the apartment in English, you can use the following plan:
- First, indicate which city you live in, write the address.
- Then write the type of house: private, apartment, one-room and others.
- Give a general description of the apartment: big or small, cozy, spacious, bright. Indicate how many apartments are in the house and list what kind of rooms they are.
- After listing, you can smoothly go to the description of each room. In the description, you can indicate where and what pieces of furniture and decor are located, talk about decoration, lighting, textiles, colors.
- When describing the rooms, you can tell in more detail about the subject that is significant to you. For example, my best friend gave me this lamp for my birthday. — My best friend gave me this lamp for my birthday. At the end, you can add common phrases. Example: I really love this room as it is very cozy. — I this room a lot because it is so cozy.
- The story should be completed with general phrases. I think our home is the best. — As for me, our flat is the best. A proverb on this topic is also perfect here.
To make the story more detailed, you can indicate when the apartment was purchased, you live here alone or with your family members, friends, tell interesting stories related to the house.
It is not necessary to use the above plan. Change and fine-tune it according to your ideas and preferences, add new paragraphs or remove some subtopics when you need a drier story about the apartment in English.
Just remember that it must be logical. It is desirable that one thought flow smoothly into another.
Useful words and phrases
All words and phrases required to describe an apartment in English are divided into subtopics below. Information structured in this way is remembered much faster. Please note that, for example, the same pieces of furniture can be found in different rooms. But in the table, these words will be presented only in one subtopic, so that there is no repetition.

Lesson 6: My House
Lesson plan:
Conversation patterns: My house
Lexical topic: At home
Lexical topic: Furniture
Grammar: Verb have / has (Verb have / has)
Speech Clichés: Description of house
Conversation patterns: My house
Every time when faced with a request to provide some information about your home, you can find the same beginning of the text, such as: «I live in a house», «My home is my fortress ..», «I love my home because.» etc. In order to start a dialogue on a given topic, you need to be sufficiently familiar with the conversational patterns My house.
We bring to your attention a table of speech patterns that can be used when describing the picture of the house, describing a piece of furniture, and describing the house itself.
Lexical topic: At home
A common phenomenon is when a child tries to describe each room in his house in as much detail as possible and talk about what he is doing while in it. To do this, you need to study the prepositions of the place.
To begin with, we propose to study separately the prepositions of a place, and then start memorizing the full phrase as it should be in a foreign language.
The phrase There is / There are (circumstance of place) is used when we mean the presence of one or more objects in a certain place.
It is used when we want to indicate time, distance or weather conditions, but given our topic of the lesson, read the cases of using this preposition below in the paragraph «Pay attention!».
Pay attention!
Use Itis и Thisis have some differences between themselves, despite the fact that they are often used in texts, reasoning and descriptions.
A description of the house in English will not be difficult if you know what and where is located, and most importantly — in which room. To make your story more colorful, you can draw a picture on the theme of My house (My house) or My family (My family), in which to personify the atmosphere of the hearth, as well as to simplify the oral description of the home interior in the lesson.
Lexical topic: Furniture
When you start learning to describe the interior of a house, you just need to know the names of what you want to describe. To reproduce a correctly formed text, it is necessary to learn the names of every room that exists or, we would like to exist, in every house.
It is also important to know the name of this or that furniture that is in your home.
The ability to use vocabulary contributes to the development of your child’s memory and speech, and the description of furniture will also help develop the creativity of children, since at such a young age, younger students develop imagination and the ability to express themselves in the environment of their peers.
Vocabulary on the topic House implies the English vocabulary of the theme of the room (rooms) and furniture (furniture), therefore, using the knowledge of the above words from the table, it will be much easier to describe the house or apartment in which the child lives.
Having fixed the names of all the necessary words and terms, the child will be able to create a real project at home or a presentation in a matter of minutes.
In every house or apartment, a person simply cannot do without certain furniture, therefore, a table with interior items is offered to your attention, without which it is impossible to imagine a modern monastery.
Grammar: Verb have / has (Verb have / has)
In the process of studying any topic, it is important to pay attention to grammatical nuances. In the case of the topic of describing a living space, knowledge of the have and has verbs is of particular importance. The verb have got plays an important role in the vocabulary of a younger student, because at this stage knowledge, skills and abilities are most productively formed. The verb have in English is quite common, since it is used not only in the translation that we will consider today in our lesson.
The forms of the verb have and the form of the verb has differ only in the peculiarities of their application in the sentence. You can see this difference immediately in the first few examples.
Example: I have got a big house. I have a big house.

Description of the interior of the house in English
Hello dear readers. Why do you think we wrote so many essays at school? Is the teacher really so interested in how you spent the summer !? In fact, writing essays is not only creativity, but also the development of speech. The description of the room in English will also help you not only show your creative skills, but also significantly enrich your vocabulary and develop the skills of a coherent English speech.
Description of the interior in English
As you learn to describe your home in English, you will notice that your vocabulary will grow imperceptibly. In particular, you will learn a lot of specific nouns by listing the items in the room. Also, do not forget that the description uses a large number of adjectives that characterize objects from different points of view.
Thus, you will once again practice and check your grammar knowledge. You will be able to identify gaps and shortcomings in your knowledge in order to correct them later. Therefore, such work on essays and texts on all sorts of topics should be treated with the utmost seriousness, showing all your skills and abilities. Even if you do not immediately succeed in doing everything right, continue anyway.
- Interior description rules
- How do you describe a room in English?
The idea for the Describing Words engine came when I was building the engine for Related Words (it’s like a thesaurus, but gives you a much broader set of related words, rather than just synonyms). While playing around with word vectors and the «HasProperty» API of conceptnet, I had a bit of fun trying to get the adjectives which commonly describe a word. Eventually I realised that there’s a much better way of doing this: parse books!
Project Gutenberg was the initial corpus, but the parser got greedier and greedier and I ended up feeding it somewhere around 100 gigabytes of text files — mostly fiction, including many contemporary works. The parser simply looks through each book and pulls out the various descriptions of nouns.
Hopefully it’s more than just a novelty and some people will actually find it useful for their writing and brainstorming, but one neat little thing to try is to compare two nouns which are similar, but different in some significant way — for example, gender is interesting: «woman» versus «man» and «boy» versus «girl». On an inital quick analysis it seems that authors of fiction are at least 4x more likely to describe women (as opposed to men) with beauty-related terms (regarding their weight, features and general attractiveness). In fact, «beautiful» is possibly the most widely used adjective for women in all of the world’s literature, which is quite in line with the general unidimensional representation of women in many other media forms. If anyone wants to do further research into this, let me know and I can give you a lot more data (for example, there are about 25000 different entries for «woman» — too many to show here).
The blueness of the results represents their relative frequency. You can hover over an item for a second and the frequency score should pop up. The «uniqueness» sorting is default, and thanks to my Complicated Algorithm™, it orders them by the adjectives’ uniqueness to that particular noun relative to other nouns (it’s actually pretty simple). As you’d expect, you can click the «Sort By Usage Frequency» button to adjectives by their usage frequency for that noun.
Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source mongodb which was used in this project.

Мы все где-то живем: в квартире, в доме, на даче и т. д. Англичане говорят: «Мой дом – моя крепость» (“My house is my castle”).
- Sturdy – устойчивый.
- Window – окно.
- Door – дверь.
- Fence – забор.
- Gate – ворота.
- Garage – гараж.
- Storey – этаж.
- Balcony – балкон.

- Attic – чердак.
- Basement – подвал.
- Chimney – дымоход.
- Skylight – окно на крыше.

Текст
My house is a two-storey building. Last year the iron fence was put around the house, there are also a gate which leads to the front door of the house and the back door which leads to the backyard. The walls are quite thick so the house is sturdy. The walls are painted in yellow color and the roof is green. There is a chimney on the top of the roof and a skylight, through which the light penetrates to the attic. There is a basement, where I store all my old stuff. There are also two balconies. And I forgot to mention a small garden where my mom grows different plants. Oh yes, and there is a garage, my dad keeps in it his car and I keep my bicycle.

The living-room and kitchen are on the first floor. The stairs lead from the living-room to the second floor. There are bedroom, bathroom and study upstairs. I like to sit on the sofa and watch news or movies on TV in the living room after work. The big clock on the wall reminds me when it is already late and when I have to go to bed. I have decorated walls of the living-room with a mirror and some pictures. Before going to sleep I like to read some books lying in the bed. I have a lot of book in my bookcase, I keep on the bedside table those which I read. In the morning I take shower and check my e-mail. My computer is on the desk in my study. The study is not very big but it has all necessary items for my work. The window faces the garden and when my eyes are tired from computer I look at the trees and let my eyes relax. I switch on the lamp on the desk when it is still dark in the morning. Then I usually go to the kitchen and open the fridge where I always keep apple or orange juice.
there isare
и лексике на тему
“my houseflat”
. Мы коснёмся и того, и другого. Также, рассмотрим пример краткой истории о жилье.
Как рассказать о своем доме на английском просто и без ошибок?
Для того чтобы понять, как
правильно
рассказать о своем доме на английском
, важно запомнить и научиться применять конструкцию
“there isare”
. В буквальном переводе это
«там есть»
. Иногда
“there isare”
озвучивают как
“имеется”
и это тоже верно. Данная конструкция делает описание дома или отдельных комнат очень простым, так как в ней одновременно присутствует формальный субъект
(there)
и глагол
(isare)
. Первое, что вы должны сделать для правильной формулировки предложения, это понять, что последует после конструкции – один предмет или несколько. От этого зависит употребление
isare
.
Например:
There
is
a big window in this room – В этой комнате (имеется) большое окно.
There are
three windows in this room – В этой комнате (имеется) 3 окна.
Полезные слова для рассказа о своем доме на английском
Как
можно
рассказать о своем доме на английском
, не зная названий комнат? Обратите внимание на картинку и проверьте, все ли слова вам известны.
1) bathroom – ванная комната
2) bedroom – спальня
3) entrance – вход, входная дверь
4) living room – гостиная
5) dining room – столовая
6) kitchen –

Type of building
Далее при описании жилья нужно указать тип строения. Это может быть многоквартирный дом (apartment building
/
block of flats
), состоящий из большого количества квартир (
flats
/
apartments
), или отдельный дом на одну или несколько семей. В английском языке существует несколько названий для дома:
- Detached house
– отдельный дом на одну семью. - Semi-detached house
– половина дома с отдельным входом к каждой части дома. - Duplex
– двухэтажный дом на две семьи с двумя разными входами. - Cottage
– дом за городом, обычно с садом. - Mansion
– особняк. - Vacation house
– дача. Или
dacha
– это слово уже существует в английском.
Не стоит также забывать, что в наше время во всем мире строятся небоскрёбы (skyscrapers
), которые представляют собой очень высокие многоэтажные здания (
multi-storied buildings
). Этажи в доме мы именуем
floors
, не путать с другим значением этого слова – «пол». А теперь подробнее рассмотрим, как описать отдельный дом и квартиру.

Общие вопросы
Письменное сообщение является развёрнутой и полноценной информацией для основных вопросов о жилье. Правильный перевод — основа для успешного ответа. Перед тем как описать собственный дом, уместно ознакомиться с рядом распространённых вопросительных предложений, которые помогут при составлении эссе:
- Where do you live? (Где ты живёшь?)
- What does your house look like? (Как выглядит твой дом?)
- How many rooms are there in it? (Сколько в нём комнат?)
- What do you have inside or outside? (Что есть внутри или снаружи?)
- Do you like your accomodation? (Тебе нравится твоё место обитания?)
Нельзя не учитывать распространённые ошибки и недочёты.
Есть ряд пунктов, на которые стоит обратить внимание при проверке письменного ответа:
- орфография и пунктуация;
- правильность структуры предложений;
- логическая связность текста;
- грамотность при переводе на русский язык.
При соблюдении простых правил, используя образцы, написать сочинение «Мой дом» очень просто, важно знать соответствующую лексику и перепроверить написанное после окончания.
Топик на английском «Моя квартира».
Давайте составим рассказ с перечисленными выражениями.
Recently me and my family moveв in a new apartment. It is not far from the city center and it is very different from our old flat in the suburbs. The two windows of my room face the river. The view is very beautiful. The room is very sunny and light because the windows are rather big. My bed is next to one of the windows. I can lie on the bed and look at the window, which is very cool. The windowsills in my room are wide and low, I like to sit there. The most necessary thing for my study is my computer. It is on the desk. There is also a bookshelf over the desk. I keep my books on the bookshelf and in the bookcase, which is next to the desk. There is a wardrobe in my room. My parents bought most of the furniture recently and it is modern.
There is also my parent’s bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, a bath and a toilet in our apartment. My mom likes to watch small TV in the kitchen when she cooks and my dad prefers watching football on our big flat screen TV, which was also bought when we moved in. There are a lot of photos of my family on the wall in my parent’s room. There is a balcony in the living room, my mom brought a lot of flower from our old apartment and placed them on the balcony. I love this flat, though I miss a little bit my old one, where I have spent my childhood.

Mary»s House.
I have a friend. Her name is Mary. Mary»s house is in a village. The name of the village is Green Meadow. There are many new houses in this village. There are many trees in the streets of the village and in the gardens. Mary»s house is not very big, it has four rooms and a kitchen. Two of the rooms are large. They are the living-room and the dining-room. There are two bedrooms in Mary»s house. One of the bedrooms is Mary»s room. Her room is not large. It has one window. В ней одно окно. Перед домом Мери маленький садик с цветами. (По поводу кухонного сада я не поняла. Возможно имеется в виду плодовый сад? Так и перевожу) За домом плодовый сад. Вы можете видеть много яблонь в саду. У Мери очень хороший дом.
Небольшой текст для повторения:
Look at this picture. This is the children»s room. You can see three children in the room: a boy and two girls. The girls are the boy»s sisters. He is their brother. The boy is playing with his toys. He is small. He is five. The sisters are schoolgirls. Their names are Rita and Vera. Vera is reading her English textbook and Rita is writing her exercises. Vera is in the fifth form. Rita is in the seventh form. They are good students.

Ему пять лет. Сестры — школьницы. Их зовут Рита и Вера. Вера читает свой учебник по английскому и Рита пишет свои упражнения. Вера в пятом классе. Рита в седьмом классе. Они хорошие ученицы.
А как зовут мальчика, так и не сказали. А было жутко интересно.
Еще небольшое описание комнаты:
There is a sofa on the left. The bookcase is between the desk and the sofa. This is my room. There is a table in the middle of the room. My room is not large. There is a desk on the right. There are two windows and one door. There are three chairs in the room. The chairs are near the desk and near the table.

И напоследок научимся говорить свой домашний адрес на примере небольшого диалога:
«What is your address?» «My address is: 17, Central Street.» «And what is the number of your flat?» «My flat is Number 31.» «Have you a telephone?» «Yes, I have.» «What is your telephone number?» «It»s 295-46-87.» «Thank you.»
Также вам часто будет встречаться конструкция «there is/ there are
- Многоквартирное жилье — block of flats/apartment building
- Дом для одной семьи — detached house
- Двухквартирный дом с отдельными входами — semi-detached house
- Двухэтажный дом на две семьи — duplex
- Особняк — mansion
- Дом за городом — cottage
- Дача — vacation house
- Этаж — floors
Пример:
I live in a small flat in London. It’s close to the university. My flat is very quiet. My flat is on the 5 floor. There are 2 rooms in my flat. (
Я живу в маленькой квартире в Лондоне. Она находится рядом с университетом. Здесь очень тихо. Моя квартира находится на 5 этаже. В моей квартире 2 комнаты
).
- Прихожая, коридор — hall
- Гостиная — living room
- Столовая — dining room
- Кухня — kitchen
- Рабочий кабинет — study
- Спальня — bedroom
- Ванная комната — bathroom
- Балкон — balcony
Даем общую характеристику:
There is a big window in the living room, so it’s very light.
There is a wardrobe, a desk in my room. There aren’t any chairs, but there is a big red sofa. (В моей комнате есть гардероб, письменный стол. Стульев нет, но есть большой красный диван).
Бытовая техника — это важная часть интерьера, а иногда и основополагающая, если речь идет о кухне. Поэтому о ней нужно обязательно рассказать в тексте:
- Техника — appliances
- Телевизор — TV-set
- Компьютер — computer
- Холодильник — fridge
- Микроволновка — microwave oven
- Плита — stove/cooker
- Посудомоечная машина — dishwasher
- Стиральная машина — washing machine
- Пылесос — vacuum cleaner
Ближе к концу, начните рассказывать об элементах декора:
- Картина — picture
- Занавеска — curtain
- Часы — clock
- Ковер — carpet
- Зеркало — mirror
- Ваза — vase
- Фотографии — photos
- Полка — shelf
Пример текста:
There are some shelves and clock on the wall. There’s a vase on the shelf. There are some pictures and photos on the wall. (На стене есть несколько полок и часы. На полке стоит ваза. На стене висят картины и фотографии).
Если вы сложите все примеры, которые я привела, то у вас уже получится небольшой текст сочинения-описания интерьера. А запомнив все слова, которые я привела, ваша лексика существенно увеличится. Пытайтесь писать сочинения — описания или повествования и на другие темы. Так вы быстро освоите много новых английских слов и фраз.

Местонахождение. Location
При описании своего дома сначала важно указать, в какой части города вы живёте, ведь местность, где живет человек, влияет на его образ жизни. Например:
- На окраине города (on the outskirts of town
). - В пригороде (in the suburbs
). - В жилом районе (in a residential area
). - Недалеко от станции (quite close to the station
). - В центре (right in the centre
).
- Также при описании местонахождения вашего дома или квартиры вы можете использовать топонимы, например: «рядом с торговым . В таком случае вам поможет статья « ».
Why is it important to know the name of household goods? Firstly, the study of these words will increase your vocabulary. Secondly, interior — is something with which we have to face every day. Whether hiking in the furniture store, a description of their dream home or find an English-speaking friend of bath accessories in the department of the supermarket.
I’ll give you an example of a comic incident that happened to me a few years ago. I was visiting friends in England, it was my first visit to them. One day at dinner, raised the issue of the national cuisine. I tried traditional English dishes, and the host family did not Ukrainian tasted. It was decided the next day to prepare dinner together in the large kitchen. Deeply confident that know the names of kitchen utensils I do not need, I successfully skip this section vocabulary in his student years. And here it began the most interesting: a stranger in the vast kitchen, where everything is hidden on the locker, I could not say that I need a grater, cutting board and ladle. The explanation on the fingers saved the situation, but on returning home the first thing I learned vocabulary related to the subject of the interior, which you now propose.

Learning Words
Above presented a lot of new vocabulary, but remember it? Perhaps you’ve seen in the apartments of people learning a foreign language, sticky stickers on every subject related to the name of the subject in a foreign language. Why not do that in your own apartment? This will help you and your family is easy to remember the words necessary for everyday communication, involuntarily paying attention to them every day.
Other non-intrusive way of memorizing words after acquaintance with them — repeating at objects around you. Go through the house, calling all that occurs, and what you remember. Those words that I can not remember, you need to repeat it. Not every house is so full of a variety of home furnishings and appliances. Will be useful hiking in the furniture store or a trip to IKEA: walking from department to department, call it whatever you see in English. Here there is something for sure is where the train!
Note that in the description of the room and the story of the location of objects is always used the turnover there is / there are.
- More about it read the article «The turnover there + be (there is / there are)»
Now let’s do the exercise to consolidate the reading material.

The workman who lives in a clean, sunny, well—aired place, where he can found a home, and bring up healthy children, will do more work, and better work, than the workman who lives in a damp, dark, ill—ventilated tenement, and who goes to his day‘s work with a heart sullen and broken because of avoidable illness and sorrow in his poor little home.
This I did at once, and after providing them with a comfortable little home, I returned and reported for duty at Fort Larned.
By that time we had settled, and found for ourselves a pleasant home of our own.
« Then the congregation dispersed to the humble homes, glorified now by the possibility of being made the dwelling—place of the King of kings.
The climate at this elevation admits of the making of permanent homes, and by moving the hives to higher pastures as the lower pass out of bloom, the annual yield of honey would be nearly doubled.
