English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle English arriven, ariven, a borrowing from Old French ariver, from Late Latin *arrīpare, from Latin ad + rīpa (shore). Displaced native oncome, tocome.

For the sense-derivation, compare Old English ġelandian, ġelendan, lendan (to arrive at land; land) > Middle English alenden, landen (to arrive; arrive at shore; land).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • enPR: ə-rīvʹ, IPA(key): /əˈɹaɪv/
  • Rhymes: -aɪv

Verb[edit]

arrive (third-person singular simple present arrives, present participle arriving, simple past and past participle arrived)

  1. (intransitive, copulative) To reach; to get to a certain place.

We arrived at the hotel and booked in.

    • 2013 May 25, “No hiding place”, in The Economist[1], volume 407, number 8837, page 74:

Yet of those who received unsolicited adverts through the post, only 3% bought anything as a result. If the bumf arrived electronically, the take-up rate was 0.1%. And for online adverts the “conversion” into sales was a minuscule 0.01%.

  2. (intransitive) To obtain a level of success or fame; to succeed.

He had finally arrived on Broadway.
