When you’re writing a curriculum vitae (CV), it can be easiest to start with a template—especially if you’re used to working with other types of resumes.
A curriculum vitae is an alternative form of a resume. Certain industries (including academia, education, some sciences, and international companies) often prefer CVs over resumes. A hiring manager will typically ask for a CV in the job listing.
CVs are longer than resumes—at least two or three pages—and differ from resumes in other respects as well. CVs provide more information on your academic background and achievements, including research, awards, grants, publications, and teaching experience.
How to Use a CV Template
Whether you are writing your first curriculum vitae or revising a current CV, a template can be very useful. For example, a template can show you how to lay out your CV. It shows you what sections to include and how to organize each section.
Templates can also help you with your CV style, including what font and font size to use, and how much space to put between each section.
Note
Templates also show you what you need to include in your CV, such as what information to put in each section and what kind of language to use.
How to Select a CV Template
Not sure how to format a curriculum vitae? Looking to revise your current CV? You have two options:
- Here is a basic CV template (compatible with Google Docs and Word Online) that you can download and use by inserting your own information into the relevant categories.
- Alternatively, Microsoft curriculum vitae templates are free for Microsoft Word users. Reviewing their templates is a useful way to get a sense of the format and what information to include on your CV.
Microsoft Curriculum Vitae (CV) Templates for Word
Free Microsoft CV templates are available to download for Microsoft Word. (Microsoft also has resume templates.)
To access these CV templates from your computer:
- Open Microsoft Word, then click on “New.”
- Then, type “curriculum vitae” into the search bar to browse for available templates. (Or select “Resumes and Cover Letters” from the suggested searches to access resume and CV templates.)
- Finally, choose the template you want to use, and Word will launch your ready-to-use template.
To access the Microsoft CV templates online:
Visit the Templates section, then:
- Scroll down to the “Resumes and Cover Letters” section to browse all of the templates (this section includes CVs as well).
- Or search for «curriculum vitae» or «resume» to view available templates.
- Click on the title of the document you’re interested in to preview the template.
- Click the “Download” button, then follow the instructions to download the CV template to your computer; or,
- Click “Open in Browser” to edit the template using Word Online. If you have a Microsoft account, you can use Word Online to create, edit, and share Word documents.
Note
Not all templates work with all versions of Word, so check before you download. There will be a message next to the download button letting you know if there are restrictions.
Tips for Using a CV Template
Once you have downloaded or opened a curriculum vitae template file, type over the text in the file to begin building your own CV. To create a personalized, polished CV:
Check out CV templates and examples. Before you start writing your CV, you should review some examples and templates to get ideas for a well-written curriculum vitae.
Make the CV unique to you and the job. CVs include several sections that resumes typically do not, including teaching experience, research, grants, fellowships, publications, presentations, and the like. Decide which sections you need to include in your CV (based on the job you’re applying for), and which ones you can remove.
Remember to customize your CV based on the experience required for each job application. Use keywords from the job posting to match your qualifications to the listing. This ensures that your application will catch the hiring committee’s attention.
Keep it short and to the point. CVs should be as concise as possible, even though they can be longer than the typical resume.
Note
Keep your CV laser-focused on the job you’re applying for, and leave out anything that’s unrelated unless it strengthens your candidacy.
It can be tempting to use the longer format to feature more of your qualifications, skills, and experience, but beware: Hiring committees still have limited time to review your application. Keep your CV laser-focused on the job you’re applying for and leave out anything that’s unrelated unless it strengthens your candidacy.
Tell the truth. Whether you’re writing a resume or a CV, it’s essential to be honest about your experience and skills when you apply for a job. Otherwise, you run the risk of being found out during the background check and dropped from consideration for the role. In academia, for example, faculty members can be fired if it is discovered that they had lied on their CVs during the hiring process. (Plus, even if you get away with fibbing in the short term, you’re less likely to be successful in a role for which you’re not truly qualified.)
Give it a unique file name. Save your CV with your first and last name as the file name. This way, employers will know to whom it belongs. For example, save it as firstname.lastname.doc or lastnameCV.doc.
Proofread. Read through your CV before sending it to an employer. Make sure you have replaced all the information from the template with your own, personalized information. Also, take the time to carefully proofread your CV, looking for any spelling errors or inconsistencies in the format. Ask a friend, family member, or career counselor to read through your CV as well. A polished CV will impress an employer, while a careless error might work against you.

- Certain industries, including academia, education, some sciences, and international companies prefer CVs over resumes.
- Always follow the instructions in the job listing and send a CV if requested.
- Curriculum vitae templates can show you how to lay out your CV, which sections to include, and how to organize each section.
A CV or Curriculum Vitae is a summary of a person’s education, employment, publications, and other professional activities, awards, and honors. In the United States, a CV is used by people applying for a position in academia, research, or scientific field (as well as grants and fellowships). The Curriculum Vitae Template below was designed with this purpose in mind. Download the template and read through the suggestions below to learn how to write your CV.

If you are a graduate student, you should begin assembling your CV right away so that you have it ready to give to future employers. Use your CV to keep track of your accomplishments and publications so that it is always up-to-date.
In many other countries, a curriculum vitae is essentially the same thing as a resume. If that applies in your case, then check out our resume template.
CV Template — Outline Format

For Word 2007 or later

License: Limited Use (not for distribution or resale)
Description
Our CV Template includes many of the common categories in a curriculum vitae such as education, research experience, teaching experience, publications, awards, etc. Think of these sections as modules that you can move around or remove as needed.
The curriculum vitae template includes some instructions pertinent to various sections as well as sample publications and references.
This CV template was set up using Styles in Word. For example, to modify all the section headings, you can just modify the Heading 1 style. To change the font in the entire document, you can edit the Normal style.
CV Template — Table Format
⤓ Download
For Word 2007 or later
⤓ Google Docs
License: Limited Use (not for distribution or resale)
Description
This version of the Curriculum Vitae is identical to the outline version, except that the document is structured using tables, with headings on the left.
Using the CV Template
Customizing: It will be very important for you to customize the template for your specific field, experience, and skills. The order of the various sections will depend upon what type of job you are applying for (such as teaching vs. research). See the reference below for examples of how to customize your CV.
Maintaining a Master Copy: You will probably end up with many different versions of your CV over time as you apply for different positions and grants. I prefer to maintain a single master CV template that contains the most up-to-date information.
Maintaining a Second Version: You may have information and categories in your master CV template that you do NOT want to include when you publish your CV or submit the CV to a potential employer. If you are in a hurry to send off an application, it is very easy to accidentally include a section in your CV that you didn’t want to. So, you may want to consider maintaining a separate CV that you use specifically for submitting with applications.
Tracking Publications: If you are using your CV as a way to keep track of your publications, then it is useful to have a category for «Publications in Review». Unless you only have a few publications and would like to show that you have more in review, you may want to consider leaving out this section when you share your CV.
General CV Writing Tips
The 5 C’s of Resume Writing — Convincing, Concise, Clear, Consistent, and Clean — also apply to curricula vitae. So, in addition to reading through our Resume Tips, here are some points to remember when writing a CV:
- Be Concise: A CV does not need to be a single page like a resume, but it still needs to be succinct. The length is proportional to your experience, number of publications, etc. Do not stuff your CV with everything you’ve ever done just to make it look longer.
- Check for Typos: Simple errors send a warning to the reader that you may do sloppy or careless work.
- Get it Reviewed: Get faculty members in your department to review your CV.
- Number the Pages: Include your name and the page number in the footer or header.
- Use a Simple Format: The format should make it easy for the reader to find the most important information. Use examples from your educational field as a guide.
- Use a Single Font: Times New Roman is a common font for a printed CV. Arial or Verdana is often used for online publication.
- Use bold, CAPITALS, and italics, but avoid underlining.
- Be Professional: If you include a personal email address, do not use a username like FunnyGuy12345@somewhere.com.
- Use full URLs: If you include links to online materials like articles, websites, or course descriptions, make sure the give the full URL.
- For more guidelines and tips, read the references listed below.
How to Find More CV Examples
A great place to find CV examples is to go to your favorite university’s web page and find the faculty page for your department. For example, if you are a mechanical engineer, look for faculty in ME. Many faculty members will publish their CV online (minus some personal details and references).
You can also try a Google search like «CV Example site:.edu filetype:pdf»

1
Valera
We begin with one of our own templates. It’s a personal favorite of mine. Deceptively simple, but with a real touch of flair in the way it makes use of fonts for a CV. The pairing of cursive headings with simple body text looks stylish and youthful, but remains readable and professional. It has a matching cover letter template too, like all of our CVs.
All of our templates are downloadable in Word format, but the best format to save your final CV copy is PDF. With our builder it’s easy, you get three download options PDF, MS Word document and plain text.
2
Cascade
Another Zety CV template for Word. With our builder, you just enter all your details then save the final result as a DOC file. No messing around in Word while you’re writing.
(You know what it’s like, move an image a fraction of an inch and suddenly everything shifts, four new pages appear, smoke comes out of your keyboard and you hear police sirens in the distance.)
All the layout pain is on us with Cascade. The two-column CV format is visually appealing and gives lots of room to max out your credentials as the perfect candidate. Nice use of color, too.
The blue column to the left uses two different shades and the right side nicely picks out the blue in the titles. The health bars for software and language skills are the cherry on top. A great choice of Word CV template.
Blue looks great but as with all of our templates, you can effortlessly choose from a rainbow of colors.
3
Blue Grey
This modern CV template is a Word free download. Just click on File, then New and search for “blue grey”, if you don’t see it right away. I love the color scheme of this one, very calm and professional. The gently rounded curves of the grey column are also a very nice touch. Nice looking health bars for the CV skills section ,too.
The original version of this template did have a problem. It had a photo of the candidate. I replaced it with a set of initials and you should do the same. If you’ve ever wondered “should I put a picture on my CV,” the answer is a definite no.
4
Columns
Columns is a free CV template in Word. Just search for it when you create a new document. It has all the neat rectangular arrangement of a Mondrian painting. Your CV summary, work experience section, everything is neatly boxed off so it can be read in turn.
Thankfully it doesn’t go with Mondrian’s bold primary colors, opting for smooth blue and taupe instead. A great choice to show you can leverage the best layout for a CV.
5
Contemporary Purple
I know, it sounds like one of those weird names for interior paint colors. It sure is eye-catching though. Sometimes small changes make all the difference and this one adds white chevrons to the purple left-hand column. It’s a clever visual trick to draw the eye down and make sure everything gets read.
Even better, it’s another free CV template in Word. As with any native Word template, click on File, then New, and search for “Contemporary.”
6
Modern
This Zety CV template for Word keeps the promise of its name. It really is a modern CV Word template. The way the bars on each column balance each other is very pleasing on the eye.
This also helps draw the reader’s gaze across all the content. That’s a good thing because the average recruiter takes just 7 seconds to scan a CV and you want them to see as much as possible.
Like many of our Microsoft Word CV templates, it features a health bar for software and language skills. Health bars originate in the world of gaming and they’re an effective way to power up your CV.
Like all of our templates, you can change font types, sizes and spacing. Plus you will also get a matching cover letter template.
7
Iconic
Another aptly named Zety CV template for Word. We’ve made good use of icons throughout. Each one functions as a little infographic explaining the information it accompanies. Infographics are another powerful upgrade to your CV as they make the content more persuasive.
That said, the best CV templates for Word always keep any graphic touches subtle. If you have a heavily infographic CV you risk it not being ATS compliant and that means it’ll never get read.
As with all of our templates, our builder makes writing your CV quick and easy. No need to mess around with formatting and layout. Just type in your text and we do the rest.
8
Blue Suede Template
If in doubt, the best approach in choosing a free CV template for Word is to KISS. That’s the classic design principle of keep it simple stupid.
This template follows a basic single-column format, lots of room to fill in your details. It still manages to look sophisticated though, simply through the sky blue accents to the top and bottom of the page. The look is like a slick corporate letterhead. Classy indeed. This one comes from Cool Free CV.
Here’s the link to this CV template for Word.
9
Manon
A very modern looking CV template that you can download from Template Monster. The golden color highlights hint that you’re as high value as the precious metal. Then the layout takes a different approach from most others, using a combination one and two-column style.
Make sure you remove the photo though, replace it with a solid fill in the same color as the background or your initials.
Here’s the link to this CV template for Word.
10
Daniela
We’re now half-way through our list. See any you like yet? If not, don’t worry, there’s 10 more to come.
This is another Word CV Template from Template Monster. Its unique selling point isn’t the layout, that’s pretty standard. It’s the colors! So tastefully chosen. This is the sort of color scheme you’d expect to see in a five-star hotel room. A template to show you’re a candidate of distinction.
Here’s the link to this CV template for Word.
11
Diamond
Diamonds are forever, but your current job doesn’t have to be. Get a new one with this Zety Word CV template. The diamonds are the icons, the bullet points, and the health bars.
Look to the left and you’ll see there’s even a “diamond necklace” to help pull the recruiter’s eye all the way down to CV certifications. The sharp angles and monochrome color scheme also look great on CV paper. Great for if you need to print out your CV.
Like all of our CV templates this one is guaranteed ATS scannable. If you choose a free CV template download you risk using one that’ll be rejected before it gets read.
12
Initials
A distinguished-looking CV Word template from Zety. Two columns with plenty of white space and that’s a good thing. What you leave out can be as important as what you put in and white space gives a big boost to readability.
Check out how your initials feature in a circular stamp to the right of the CV header. It looks just like a seal of quality, confirming you as a top-grade candidate for the job. Great for more experienced candidates as there is so much room for job-winning content.
If you’re less experienced don’t worry, as with our other templates you can add, remove and rearrange sections to suit your needs. Then the builder ensures the formatting stays intact.
13
Black Tie
This template looks just like an invite for a fancy social event or even a menu for an expensive restaurant. Classic elegance, just like its name. In this format, it’s a good choice for a new graduate as it puts the CV education section above experience.
Here’s the link to this CV template for Word.
When making a CVin our builder, drag & drop bullet points, skills, and auto-fill the boring stuff. Spell check? Check. Start building your CV here.
When you’re done, Zety’s CV builder will score your CV and tell you exactly how to make it better.
14
Flower Power
Another free CV template from Word’s own repository. A floral theme this time for a fresh, youthful and feminine feel. It’s probably not the best choice if you’re applying to a more conservative organization, but would be perfect for more creative CVs.
With a motif like that, you can almost feel a spring breeze when you read it. Though whoever wrote this obviously hasn’t read our guide on what to include in a CV. Take a look and get the section titles right. To access this CV template, search for “pink floral” when creating a new document.
15
Dark Elegance
If you want a unique CV template this is the one for you. A word of warning though, this won’t look great on paper unless done with a high-resolution printer. Best to test it out if you ever plan to print it. Still, if dark and brooding is your thing, this is your go-to template.
Here’s the link to this CV template for Word.
16
Ray of Sunshine
A very cheery template from Freesume. Simplicity itself, but a great example of what fashionistas call a color pop. That yellow is so bright and eye-catching. It’s a joyful color too, and certain to bring a ray of sunshine to anyone reviewing a stack of dull, predictable CVs. They’ll be happy to give you a call after seeing this mood-lifting layout.
Here’s the link to this CV template for Word.
17
Bubble Gum
This is also a free CV template for Word created by Freesume. In color theory, pink is seen as feminine, nurturing and caring, but don’t be limited by that. It’s a great choice for men too, if you want to stand out, but still stay tasteful.
There’s another nice color trick here, too. If this template featured bright pink on black, it’d be over the top. Dusty pink on dark grey ensures it stays soft and tasteful.
Here’s the link to this CV template for Word.
Plus, a great cover letter that matches your CV will give you an advantage over other candidates. You can write it in our cover letter builder here. Here’s what it may look like:

18
Concept
We finish with a trio of Zety Word CV Templates. First up is Concept. The dark sidebar is in the form of a timeline. It adds visual interest while staying simple and uncluttered.
Then to the right is a spacious single-column layout with discreet CV icons. You can see that the icon for each section joins with the bullet points to form a string of beads.
Another template that cleverly keeps the eye going down the page.
19
Cubic
Cubic is a great name for a CV template for Word. Huey Lewis was right, it’s hip to be square. This template starts off strong, your name’s in lights in white text on a dark header. Moving down it goes for the familiar two-column format, but look closer.
The left side is a two-column within a two-column. The timeline to the left emphasizes the classic chronological CV format. Then the right-side column is a calming pale blue. Perfect to soothe an overworked hiring manager.
Planning to use another CV format like functional or combination? Our builder lets you adapt the layout to any format you choose.
20
Nanica
Let’s finish with a Zety CV template for Word. A CV doesn’t always need colors and icons to look good. Nanica is an exercise in Marie Kondo minimalism. There’s just a tasteful use of health bars to stop it being too plain.
This one is a reassuringly traditional CV template and a great choice for when you’re targeting something more conservative.
That’s it! Have you got an incredible CV template for Word you want to share? Need any help with creating a Word CV template yourself? We’ve got a comments section just for you so please ask.

What to add to a Personal Statement on a CV?
The professional details of your resume describe your technical aspects, but your personal statement gives an insight into you as a person. You should write about different aspects of your personality which make you the right candidate for the job.
This should include various traits which will help you in handling various pressures you would feel during your job. Traits like leadership qualities are important for managerial positions and therefore should be mentioned in detail when applying for such posts. You should also write about why you are applying for the particular post and what you hope to achieve if you are accepted for the job. You can also see Resume Samples.

Following tips can help you in making an impressive CV.
- Follow a standard format throughout your CV. Don’t write in bullet form in one place and paragraph sample form in another place of your CV. You can also see Supervisor Resume.
- Start with your personal information that is most relevant to the position you are applying for. Your CV should appear to be made especially for the position you are applying for.
- Do not make your CV too lengthy. Keep it short but make sure it includes everything about you relevant to the job you are applying for.
Focus on your strong points. Put as much stress as possible on your strengths.

More in Resume
Job Objective — Ваша цель поиска работы (это должность какую Вы желаете получить);
Education — образование (тут все просто, берете Ваше старое резюме и присывайте в английский вариант);
Work Experience — опыт работы (здесь Вы по примеру резюме на русском отражаете опыт работы) ;
Achievements — достижения (то, чем вы гордитесь и на что в большей степени обращает внимание работодатель, заполняйте кратко и желательно под конкретным опытом (см пример ниже)
Skills — навыки (Например: Language skills (владение языками), Work with SAP, 1C, Photoshop (владение определенными компьютерными программами), Driving license (водительские права) и другие, которые считаете важными для данной должности;
References — рекомендации (это не обязательный пункт, но можете написать контакты сотрудников с которыми работаете или работали, которые могут рекомендовать Вас как прекрасного специалиста) для примера:
Ivan Sidorov, Philips (Company Name), tel 8(000) 00-000-00, SidirovI@gmail.ru (ФИО рекомендателя, название компании в которой работали вместе с ним, его телефон (можно написать тел по запросу, чтобы не выдавать его всем подряд), емейл)
