При этом в английском языке мы говорим once a week, twice a month, three times a year или thrice a year.
Thrice
I go to the gym thrice a week.
I go to the gym three times a week.
---|---|---|
once a day | один раз в день | He brushed his teeth once a day. |
twice a day | дважды в день два раза в день |
She has a shower twice a day. |
three times a day | трижды в день три раза в день |
I eat three times a day. |
four times a day | четырежды в день четыре раза в день |
They check Facebook’s* website four times a day. |
*Meta (Facebook)
Once in a lifetime
Выражение once in a lifetime употребляется в значении “раз в жизни”.
An opportunity as good as this arises once in a lifetime.
‘Once in a lifetime event’: London queues to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth.
She goes to London once a year.
Present Simple
They went hiking in the mountains once a month when they were younger.
Past Simple

- every day/week/month/year… д.
- once/twice/three times a day/month…
I seldom watch TV.
Fabian never tells a lie.
Bobby doesn’t often go to the pub.
We don’t always cook at home.
Do you usually get to work by car?
Do they always arrive late?
Sometimes I meet Margaret in the park. I sometimes meet Margaret in the park.
It is always windy in the mountains.
He is seldom in the workplace.
The professor isn’t always strict with the students.
The weather is often warm and sunny here.
Why is Jenny always sad?
Is she often absent?
- сколько-то раз в период (every day, twice a month, once a week и пр.)
- когда к наречию частотности прибавляются слова very / not very / too — очень / не очень / слишком
I pay my bills once a month.
The postman doesn’t come every day.
Does he go to Italy twice a year?
I don’t watch films very often.
You visit us too seldom.
Using bi or semi in front of time periods can create tremendous confusion these days as definitions and style guidance continue to soften and blur.
To illustrate this, we located the following definitions of words with the bi or semi prefix after researching both style books and dictionaries.
Biweekly: once every two weeks or twice a week
Bimonthly: once every two months or twice a month
In addition, a biweekly publication is issued every two weeks and a bimonthly publication is issued every two months.
Then we have this from The Associated Press Stylebook:
Biannual: twice a year, synonymous with semiannual; for “every two years,” use biennial.
Consider these definitions as well:
Semiweekly: twice a week
Semimonthly: twice a month
Those of us who resolutely uphold precision might cling to Latin’s original intent for bi and semi: bi = two, semi = half (or twice). Such loyalty to Latin would give us biweekly for “every two weeks” and semiweekly for “twice a week.”
Conversely, those of us who note that the blurring of bi and semi will only get greater will avoid confusion altogether by stating the actual time frame. Instead of battle with biweekly or semiweekly, we will say “every two weeks.” Rather than wrestle with bimonthly or semimonthly, we will write “twice a month.”
