Cool things to do on word

Microsoft Word is hardly considered the sexiest computer software. When it comes to big design projects, it is probably best to look elsewhere, but that doesn’t mean Word can’t be useful. In fact, it has a lot of features many people are unaware of that makes it more functional and helpful with small projects, including, of course, word processing. Here’s a look at some of those handy features as well as some quick, easy DIY projects to do next time you are messing around on your laptop.

Microsoft Word

Compare Documents

Comparing documents can be a pain. The windows never want to line up right, and clicking between windows should stay in the stone age. Luckily, Word took care of this problem for us way back in 2003. In Word 2007 and 2012, all you have to do to arrange two documents next to each other, is to open all of the documents that you want to compare. Then, go to the View tab and click the “View Side by Side” button and the “Arrange All” button. Want to know something even cooler? Press “synchronous scrolling” and you will also be able to scroll through both documents at the same time.

DIY Labels

Buying those cute labels you see in your friend’s kitchen pantry can get expensive, and what if you can’t find a color or pattern that you like? Creating your own labels is a simple enough project for Word to handle. Start by picking a shape from the “Insert” tab. Then make the outline of the shape more distinct by going to “Format” and “Shape Outline” to adjust the weight of the outline.

Make the line as thick or as thin as you like depending on how much you want the outline to stand out. The “Shape Outline” tab also allows you to change the color of the outline, and right above it is the tab to change the shape fill color as well. While a solid color can be cute, try mixing it up with a picture or texture fill.

By adding a layer you can have a fun pattern in the background and a plain white box in the center for writing the words. Do this by inserting a smaller version of the same shape and keeping the fill of the second shape white. Next, create a text box and type your text. Finally, group all of the parts of the label together, so you can move it around as one unit, by selecting all of the parts by holding down the CTRL key. Right Click and go down to the grouping option. This blogger provides a detailed description with pictures for how to complete this kind of project.

Make Your Monogram

A monogram is a fun way to dress up some stationary, an envelope or even create some personal wall art. It’s also been a popular way recently to make your own wedding invitations or save the date announcements. There are a slew of tutorials out there to show you how to make a monogram, but here are the basic steps:

Start by drawing a big text box. Then insert the initial of your last name. Increase the font size to the 180 to 200 range. Find a font that you like and play around with colors as well. Black creates a professional look, but try using something softer if this is for personal stationery or a wedding invitation. Using one of your wedding colors is also a good idea. Once you have your second initial figured out, insert either the full first name or the first initial.

If you are creating a couple’s monogram, use both first names. If you are making your own monogram, use a middle initial for the third letter. Play around with any additional details you would like to add, such as a border, and then convert word to pdf, so you can manipulate the monogram as an image.

Use Words as Art

Wall art doesn’t necessarily have to be as expensive or complex as a photograph; sometimes words are the best way to capture a memory. Framed art with your wedding song or important dates are both popular ideas. For a baby shower gift or for your own nursery, use WordArt to create a piece with the baby’s name, the date she was born, her weight and size, and the time and place of the birth.

The WordArt feature offers a ton of ways to customize the art and make the words interesting to look at. Under “Text Effects” try using the “Transform” button to stretch the words and use two or three different colors throughout. Create sections with the words by separating them with stretched out periods or another symbol that you prefer. Use different sizes to show order of importance and to help guide the eye throughout the piece.

Blog Easier

Customizing your blog posts with a Web based text editor can get downright frustrating. Options are generally limited, and manipulating fonts and pictures is particularly difficult. Microsoft Word has a feature that allows you to connect to blogs on popular blog interfaces including Blogger and WordPress. Access this feature by going to “New” and selecting “Blog Post.” Office will then help you set up an account.

Once your account is set up, Office simplifies the ribbon down to a Blog Post and Insert tab, so you are only using features essential to blogging. The great thing about this is you get all of the benefits of Word, including a better grammar and spelling checker, WordArt, shapes, tables, clipart and faster picture uploads. Once you are ready to upload your post to your blog, Word will automatically code and convert the file, so it works online.

5 Quick Tips To Make Better To Do Lists in Word for 2022

Trying to figure out the best to do list for your needs? Take a look at these quick tips. They’ll help you find, create, and design the perfect to do or task list:

1. Keep Things Organized

To do lists and task lists are all about organizing your content. So, make sure the list itself is well organized too. This might not seem like a big deal when your list is small but imagine larger lists. You might also have different categories of tasks, or you may have content to complete over more than one day.

Design elements can be fun, but keep in mind the functionality of your to do list. Consider whether you need to separate your tasks into sections or categories. Things like numbers, time, and date can be helpful too.

Use a to do list Word template to organize your tasks, like we see in this premium template from Envato Elements.

2. Type or Writing? Consider What’s Best

You’ve got a choice with your Word to do list. You could work with a to do list template doc, print it out, and then write your tasks. This is handy because you can print and reuse this list over and over again.

Or use your to do list digitally, filling it in all within Microsoft Word. This is convenient because then there’s no printing involved. DOC files can also be opened elsewhere, like in Google Docs, for your convenience.

There’s no wrong answer here, so consider what would be most convenient for you.

3. Consider Larger Uses and Reusability

To do lists and task lists have larger potential too. For example, you could work them into your bullet journal, food log, organizer, or planner. They work well for health goals, financial planning, business projects, and much more. Try incorporating your to do list with your calendar, so you can easily gauge your time.

Do you plan to reuse your to do list? You may want to choose a to do list template doc that’s got the potential to be mixed, remixed, and reprinted.

For example, if you want to have a monthly to do list, will you make each month unique? Or leave boxes and lines, so you can fill in the dates by hand? Consider what would make your list most convenient to use and reuse.

4. Design Can Be More Than a Pretty Face

A lovely designed to do list can make your task list more visually appealing. Visuals have the potential to help with organization too. Here are some ways design elements can help push your to do list further:

  • Consider using color as a tool to help you manage and organize your tasks.
  • Experiment with different fonts and styles, especially in new sections or headers.
  • Be careful not to overdo it. Too many design elements can make your to do list distracting and chaotic on the eyes.

5. Collaboration, Presentation, and More

There are so many possibilities when it comes to designing a to do list. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • To do lists and task lists are right at home in the classroom. Whether you’re developing a course or tackling your own studies, use lists to help you organize and track your progress.
  • Collaboration benefits from organization. Keep track of your group work with a collaborative task list. This is where services like Google Docs can be really handy.
  • If you’re working your task list or to do list into a workbook or planner, remember to keep things visually consistent. Branding like this helps make your presentation look more professional.
  • It can be a good idea to think of functionality first. If it looks good but it doesn’t function well, the objective has been lost.

There are eight new hot springs to enjoy, dotted along a black-sand beach in the Hvalfjörður fjord, around a 45-minute drive from Reyjkavík. Initially, trains will run from Palanque, known for its Mayan sites, all the way to Cancún, stopping along the way at the Yucatán capital of Mérida and Chichén Itzá, another important site for Mayan ruins. The Parisian townhouse where the feted French singer Serge Gainsbourg spent the last 20 years of his life is already an unofficial shrine to his legacy, but in 2023 it will open as a museum dedicated to his life and work. You can snoop around Serge’s large living room, complete with piano, art deco bar and a huge collection of sculptures – and if you’re a diehard fan, you’ll appreciate the late singer’s detritus, from an ashtray of cigarette butts to half-finished bottles of red.

5. Hear tales from every continent at a new storytelling festival

Marrakech, Morocco

Morocco has long been the home of hikayat, the ancient art of storytelling, and now a new festival – the Marrakech International Storytelling Festival – is breathing new life back into the tradition. After a successful launch last year, the festival will be returning to the red city for its second edition in February (12 to 19), this time under the theme of ‘Ancestral Voices’. Co-founded by Marrakech’s very own World Storytelling Cafe, the festival will see 80 speakers, poets and tellers from all over the world deliver spoken-word performances across the city in languages ranging from English to Arabic to Persian. Performances will take place in the city’s restaurants, museums, souks, squares and the intimate courtyards of riads.

Italy

Head off the beaten path and enjoy small-town charm in the ‘most beautiful villages of Italy’ (I Borghi Più Belli d’Italia) this year. For 2023, the association has added 14 new destinations to the list of 348 villages dotted up and down the boot. These pedestrianised towns, home to fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, represent a slice of authentic, rural life in Italy thanks to their local gastronomic traditions, well-preserved architecture, and cultural programming. New entries this year include the picturesque town of Malcesine on Lake Garda, and the medieval village of San Donato in Poggio in Chianti, Tuscany.

Sydney, Australia

The Sydney Mardi Gras has been a joyful LGBTQ+ celebration for more than four decades, and in 2023 the Emerald City is taking it up multiple notches as it combines forces with WorldPride for a 17-day city-wide extravaganza. There’s a program of more than 300 events, including big concerts and parties with iconic headliners like Kylie Minogue on one hand, and a Human Rights Conference and a newly established queer history museum on the other. Down Under’s biggest event since the 2000 Olympics, this also marks the first time that WorldPride won’t be held in June. (Mardi Gras is celebrated during the Sydney summer in February/March – prime booty-short season).

11. Lose a week to the world’s second-biggest carnival

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Yes, Rio’s world-famous carnival is one for the bucket list – but if Brazil is a little out of reach this year, you’re guaranteed just as much unadulterated revelry at Tenerife’s version (second in size only to Rio). The week-long party has a ‘New York’ theme this year, so look out for inventive costumes and floats taking on the aesthetic. The carnival will take over the streets of the island’s capital Santa Cruz in the run-up to Lent, and will be a dazzling show of street parades, musical troupes and striking costumes. Make sure to catch the Murgas competition, where colourful satire artists compete for laughs, and go out with a bang at all-day and all-night parties during the festival’s closing ‘Piñata’ weekend.

12. Immerse yourself in an art installation in an abandoned ballroom

Melbourne, Australia

Prolific Melbourne street artist Rone – best known for his large-scale artworks, often staged in abandoned buildings – has taken over the enigmatic ballroom space of Flinders Street Station with his latest exhibition, ‘Time’. Running until April 23, the immersive installation is spread across 11 rooms and features Rone’s distinctive female figures flanked by vintage-style objects by interior set decorator Carly Spooner, and a building team led by Callum Preston. Accompanied by a soul-stirring soundscape by composer Nick Batterham, the exhibition is a haunting reflection on a long-forgotten era when Melbourne’s most famed heritage building was more than just a train station.

Singapore

Singapore’s iconic Jurong Bird Park has closed after 52 years, but it’s soon to be replaced by the larger and more immersive Bird Paradise in spring 2023. The new 17-hectare park houses over 3,000 birds from 400 avian species in eight massive aviaries, each recreating different biomes from around the world. Visitors can explore the misty African rainforests, tranquil Southeast Asian bamboo forests, and even feast with penguins in an underwater sustainable dining experience. This is all part of a larger masterplan to integrate five zoological parks and an eco-resort at Mandai Wildlife Reserve, so there’s plenty more to look forward to in the area.

It’s due to be the biggest summer for live music since 2019 – and where better to enjoy it than Lisbon? 18. (Re)discover the magic of childhood

London, UK

Remember the Museum of Childhood? In Bethnal Green? If you’re a Londoner, of course you do. It was one of the city’s most idiosyncratic spaces. A cavernous venue, full of toys and the ephemera of childhood, the gallery has been closed for what feels like ages, undergoing a £13 million refurb. The renovations will see the creation of three new galleries, including an open studio that will encourage young ’uns to develop their creative skills in a collaborative environment. Sounds brilliant. See you in the summer.

Fondly known as ‘La Divina’ for her musical talents – and ‘tiger’, thanks to her intense temperament – Maria Callas is one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated opera singers. In 2023, as Greece celebrates the hundredth anniversary since the diva’s birth, there’ll be a bonanza of opera-themed events across the country – but by far the most exciting is the opening of the new Maria Callas museum in Athens. Packed with personal artefacts and rare live recordings, the museum will open its doors this summer in an elegant neoclassical mansion on the city centre’s storied Mitropoleos Street.

22. Watch a heart-stopping street race in the Windy City

Chicago, USA

No, it’s not the latest installment of The Fast and the Furious, but it does seem like it as NASCAR gears up to take over the streets of Chicago this summer for their first-ever street race. The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series is scheduled for the Fourth of July weekend with a street course spanning 2.2 miles – you’ll watch cars book it down Lakeshore Drive, Michigan Avenue, Columbus Drive, and other downtown thoroughfares. The televised street race will be a full-out sporting extravaganza with big-name music acts. Expect tickets to be as pricey as the careening cars will be fast – but you should get a good view from one of Chicago’s many fine rooftop bars.
