What is a Compound Word?
A compound word is a word that is made up of two or more individual words that are combined together to create a new word with a new meaning. The words can be joined together in different ways, such as with a hyphen (e.g. mother-in-law), without a space (e.g. headache), or with a space (e.g. ice cream).
The individual words that make up a compound word can be nouns, verbs, adjectives, or other parts of speech. When they are combined, the resulting word often has a different meaning than the individual words would have on their own.
For example, “football” is a compound word made up of “foot” and “ball,” and it refers to a specific sport that involves kicking a ball with the feet.
Types of Compound Words
We can write a compound word in three ways:
- First, as open compounds which can be spelled as two separate words, e.g., Flow chart.
- Second as closed compounds (joined to form a single word, e.g., sunset)
- Third as hyphenated compounds in which two words are joined by a hyphen, e.g., long-term).
Open Compound Words:
Open compound words are composed of two or more words that are written separately and function together as a single concept. They are not joined by hyphens or spaces.
Examples of open compound words include “ice cream“, “high school“, “coffee mug“, “air conditioner“, and “swimming pool“.
Close Compound Words:
Close compound words are composed of two or more words that are written together without spaces or hyphens. They function together as a single concept, but each word retains its individual meaning.
Examples of close compound words include “sunset”, “blueberry”, “bookshelf”, “toothbrush”, and “railway”.
Hyphenated Compound Words:
Hyphenated compound words are composed of two or more words that are joined by hyphens. They function together as a single concept, but the hyphens indicate that the words have a closer relationship than open compound words.
Examples of hyphenated compound words include “well-being”, “co-worker”, “self-esteem”, “mother-in-law”, and “good-looking”.
