I love teaching preschool concepts with hands-on activities. If those activities serve more than one purpose, that’s even better.
One important preschool skill is learning colors. Some kids pick up that skill sooner than others and are ready to move on to learning color words.
This pack of puzzles serves both purposes. That makes these color word puzzles perfect for preschoolers, but they can also be adapted for tots and kindergarten kiddos, too.
From picture books and printables to hands-on activities and book-based activities, there are so many ways to introduce teach young learners to their colors. Low-prep activities are definitely easiest to include in your daily homeschool preschool plans.
This pack of FREE color word puzzles contains 10 puzzles. Each puzzle features items that are the same color to they are easier for younger children to assemble. Older preschoolers and kindergarteners can focus on spelling the color words correctly as they reassemble the puzzles.
What you’ll need:
- Color word puzzles (below)
- Laminator
- Paper cutter or scissors
How to prepare:
Print off the puzzles (below). I suggest printing on cardstock for stability and Laminating for durability. Cut the puzzles into strips.
For tots and prereaders, you can cut the color word off the bottom of each puzzle so that your child just focuses on reassembling the puzzles based on color.
How to use:
Have your child assemble each puzzle. Younger students can reassemble based on color while older children can focus on sounding out and spelling each color word as they reassemble them.

COLOR WORD MATCH PUZZLES
This free set includes 10 colors with 2 sets of each color to match. Each puzzle has a different colored picture on it and the student will choose the corresponding color word that matches.
They are perfect for centers or small group work.
You can download your copy at the bottom of this post. I print mine on card stock to make them sturdier and then laminate them so they can easily be used over and over again. It makes for a fun low prep activity.

Puzzle Level
This word search is best suited for early elementary aged children and is an easy level puzzle.
This word search puzzle has 12 hidden color words for kids to find and circle.
The words are hidden horizontally, vertically and diagonally, but only forwards facing. There are no words that are upside down or backwards to make it easier for children to find.
The color words are grade 2 spelling words from the color themed spelling week.
This printable puzzle will be a great worksheet for students to work on during that week to give them more practice with working with the individual letters that make up each word.
Color Words
There are eight colors hidden in this puzzle:
- blue
- red
- yellow
- green
- black
- white
- pink
- brown
And there are also four color words:
- color or colour (depending on if you use the American spelling or the spelling of other English countries)
- rainbow
- dark
- light
If desired, kids that enjoy coloring can color the crayons their color after finding that color word in the puzzle.
