Hello, everyone.
I’d like to ask you a simple question. Suppose I don’t want to use «drawback»,
what alternative can you think of? Does «weak point» fit here?
Or any other idea? I don’t want to use «drawback» because this word is not
familiar to Japanese students. Thank you.

One (disadvantage/drawback/benefit/harm) of public transport is its unreliability.
The answer is: disadvantage. But I see no difference between drawback and disadvantage.
Can you tell the the correct answer and why?

I think one could happily use either disadvantage or drawback here.

The meanings of these two nouns are very similar, but I tend to talk about a disadvantage of something and a drawback to something — so in your sentence I prefer «disadvantage».

It’s an interesting point, SS.

For what it’s worth, the ngrams don’t seem to bear you out, with regard to recent usage.

However, they support your view for the usage of a hundred and fifty years ago, quite strongly. I was quite surprised.

Is there any difference between «disadvantage» and «drawback». I’ve looked them up in dictionaries, only to see they overlap mostly.

Drawbacks

We use drawback to refer to a feature of something which makes it less useful or acceptable than it could be. Drawback is often synonymous with disadvantage, but note that drawforward does not exist as an alternative to advantage!

The only drawback / disadvantage with this accommodation is that it’s a fifteen-minute walk to the bus-stop.
